Acknowledgement I would like to thank our supervisor for this project, Miss Romanie Jaitly for the valuable guidance and advice. She inspired us greatly to work on this project. Her motivation contributed tremendously to our project. I would also like to thank her for showing us some examples related to the topic of our project. Besides, I would like to thank our visiting faculty miss Ranju Walia. Her contribution towards the making of embroidery co-ordinates of the Brand was really helpful for this course. Also I would like to thank National Institute of Design (NID) for providing us with good work environment and facilities to complete this project.



Introduction The second design project was based on print. It started from studying about different brands and their designers. We narrowed down to single brand and developed the printed surface according to choosen inspiration which should also match with sensibilities of the chosen Fasion Brand or Home Decor. I chose an Italian Fashion Brand PRADA. The first assignment‘s inspiration was Italy where PRADA originated. The second assignment was a tribute to Ahmedabad, so inspiration for this was Band-Baja, which is used in marriage celebration. The thought behind the inspiration was that if Miuccia Prada came to Ahmedabad what would inpire her the most. I felt Band Baaja was an indigenious Indian vehical.

Brand Study Italian fashion house Prada was founded by Mario Prada in 1913. In collaboration with his brother Martino, the pair opened a leather goods steamer trunks and handbags and luggage store called Fratelli Prada (Prada Brothers) in Milan.Mario’s daughter Luisa took over the business from her father, and in turn, her daughter Miuccia Prada, would take over for her in 1978. The company as we know it today has evolved under Miuccia Prada’s direction. Prada’s first totes and backpacks were introduced in 1979, eventually becoming best-sellers.The company expanded its market by placing its handbags in major retailers around the world and opening a second boutique in Milan.In 1983, the Prada family opened a second store in the prestigious Via della Spiga in Milan.The new store showcased the new brand image as it blended traditional elements with a modern architectural setting and would represent a revolution and a benchmark for luxury retail. In response to the growing demand for and appreciation of Prada products, the range was extended from leather goods (such as bags, luggage and accessories) to include footwear, as well as men’s and women’s ready-to-wear apparel. From 1986, new stores were opened in New York and Madrid, followed by London, Paris and Tokyo. The first Prada women’s wear fashion show was held in Milan in 1988. In 1993, Ms. Miuccia Prada’s creative inspiration led to the establishment of a new brand Miu Miu designed for women who are particularly fashion-forward and interested in trendy and sophisticated fashion and lifestyle. Miu Miu now offers women’s ready-to-wear, leather goods and shoes, and is an increasingly important component of the Group’s sales.


Spring 2000 An exquisite show of chic and glamour, tempered by the designer’s signature discretion. Burgundy shorts and sweaters, lipstick prints, polka dot shirts, leather skirts and boldly coloured turtlenecks evoked a cosmopolitan panache not seen since the jet-set ‘70s and early ‘80s; some looks were accessorized with sizeable travel bags and large sunglasses. For those in search of the perfect summer robe, there were also demure, semi-transparent dresses with masterful pleats and lingerie-inspired detailing that begged for relaxed cocktails in the country.

SPRING 2011 Only Miuccia Prada could attach a label like “minimal baroque” to a collection whose references ranged from hospital scrubs to seventeenth-century cherubs to Jazz Age superwoman Josephine Baker. Fishing around for an alternative to “fresh,” she herself came up with “brave, bold, and obvious” by bringing in sheer uplift of the solid blocks of primary color; jungle prints and striped sombreros.

Spring-Summer-Colours-2011 For their take on the colours for Spring 2011 clothing trends, cloth manufacturers Lenzing believed that they won’t just be throwing off the darker colours of Fall 2010s trends but possibly even the mentality that has gone with recent financially tough times. Thus they see Spring / Summer 2011 colours as those which are “uplifting” and “soften, energise, and excite.” For the Spring / Summer 2011 season they’ve put forward five key colour trends. Celebration, Abstraction, New Classic, Aqueous, Perleage.

Fall-Winter-Colours-2011-12 “F/W 2011-12 is a season of re-invention, rejuvenation an exploration. We value the concept of time... moving forward with new ideas, a need to play, escape, explore and shine. It is time to leave the past behind. This makes it a season of contrasts and alternatives, a time to lead not follow. . .�

Spring-Summer-colours-2012 In brief, the latest trends and the main themes for the season include metallic colours with a glow, mix of saturated, bright and shimmery Pastels along with some hot and vibrant colour surfaces.

ASSIGNMENT-1 The assignment was to take an inspiration, related to the brand which we have studied and analysed and then make an artwork for surface development.

INSPIRATION - Venice City Prada is an Italian brand, so I took cues from Italy itself and Venice city became the inspiration for creating the artwork for the print surface.

LEARNING Brand study and analysing the brands’s ideology and their design philosophy widened my understanding of prints and developing collections. Even her inspirations for previous collection helped me to develop a keen design sense, style and mood for my print collections. After understanding all the details, I came up with some ideas as how to develop artworks using different materials and mediums which in turn helped me while creating co-ordinates and the final surface. For the actual coordinates on fabric, embroidery came in handy. It also help me in perceiving the texture and the actual feel. The whole process of design development took us from the basic print making to a whole new advanced level of print design which I thoroughly enjoyed.
