There comes a point for all students, for some round about now, for others perhaps a little earlier, when you realize that the heady, hazy days of undergraduate life are numbered. Just round the corner of graduation, life is waiting – and what to do? The options seem terrifyingly infinite and, the current outlook not overly promising. But fear not: the Varsity Graduate Handbook is here to make all those options a little more digestible, to show you what lies beyond the milk round and to demonstrate that really it’s just case of knowing where to start.

Varsity Guide to Careers 2011
Moving to the Big Smoke Even with the upgrade from student loan to grown-up salary, London life doesn’t come cheap. Suddenly, not everywhere is a fifteen minute (maximum!) walk away, your college bill proliferates into a confusing multitude, and your student discount card is expiring. Emmanuel graduate Zing Tsjeng shares her tips on keeping your chin up - and out of the red. ACCOMMODATION > Renting out a place in London solo is a quick way to burn through your finances, so flatsharing is still the way to go. Don’t expect to pay anything less than a hundred a week for renting a flat with your friends, especially if you’re living near the city centre. Negotiate tiered prices based on room sizes; the person with the smallest room should have to pay the least. Check out this handy guide to property rental, specifically tailored towards students: tinyurl.com/2u9ru3s > Don’t be afraid to live away from Zone 1 or 2 – the cost of living goes down the further away you are from central London, and public transport system in London is generally reliable and wellconnected. Check out the London Rents Map – an ever-expanding map that shows the average cost of renting a property across the city: www.london. gov.uk/rents > If you’re more adventurous, there are plenty of unconventional ways to find a place to stay. Property guardian firms like Camelot will place you in disused properties like churches and houses for a minimum rental fee, complete with utilities. All you need to do is make sure you keep squatters out. The only caveat: in most cases, you’re only guaranteed a place to live for up to six or eight months. uk.cameloteurope.com, adhoc.eu, ambikaproperty.com > As far as the Internet goes, Gumtree is still the best place to look for flatshares (Craigslist UK, perhaps due to the reputation of its American counterpart as a trolling spot for online prostitution, has never really taken off here). It lets you browse by location and has a handy search function that allows you to put in the minimum and maximum price you’d be willing to pay for rent. gumtree.co.uk
HOUSEHOLD UTILITIES > Now that you’re away from Hall and your parents, you’re actually going to have to fend for yourself at mealtime. One of the first things you realise is that buying food for yourself is actually pretty expensive, so wasting food is a no-no. Websites like Supercook will let you search for recipes based on what’s left in your fridge, while StillTasty will let you know just how long you can let that can of Sainsbury’s Basics baked beans fester. A tip: most mould won’t actually kill you, but it will taste nasty. Same with rancid milk or yoghurt. Black mould, on the other hand, is what does kill you – if you see it in your fridge, throw everything out and bleach the shelves of your fridge. supercook.com, stilltasty.com >Buying seasonal food always works out cheaper, so resist the urge to reach for those strawberries in December. Eat The Seasons is a handy website that lets you know which foods are in season. www.eattheseasons.co.uk

> We know it’s tempting, but you really don’t need to buy Cillit Bang just to clean your house. Ordinary cupboard staples, like white vinegar, work surprisingly well – it’ll get water marks off shower screens and de-crust taps (wrap a pieceof vinegar-soaked cotton and leave overnight). tinyurl.com/35hkz8q > Don’t bother getting potted plants. Instead, invest in growing your own herbs. Basil and rosemary are good ones to start with, and homegrown herbs always taste better than storebought or freeze-dried ones. > The good thing about being environmentally friendly is that it sometimes helps you save money. Install a low-flow showerhead in the bathrowom; place a bottle of water in the toilet tank to cut down on water use; wrap your hot water heater in a blanket for insulation. For loweffort environmentalism, just buy low-energy and energy-saving light bulbs. You can usually cut down on 80% of the energy consumed by normal bulbs. LIVING > You’ve moved in and now you’re faced with making your flat actually livable. Jazz up your Ikea furniture with the help of some intrepid DIY bloggers like Ikea Hacker. ikeahacker.blogspot.com, younghouselove.com > Go to car boot sales and charity shops to get any other decorative finishing touches. Battersea Car Boot Sale is one of the biggest in London, and you can find all the home décor junk your heart can desire, from 1920s Cambridge College portraits to antique candlesticks. carbootcalendar. com > The seriously tight-fisted can pick up free furniture around London via sites like Gumtree and Freecycle. Other people discard furniture all the time – all you need to do is provide some form of pick-up. gumtree.co.uk, freeycle.co.uk > If you’re stuck between jobs and need some spare cash, you can sign up to one of the many Oxbridge tutoring agencies. You can also advertise yourself around your neighbourhood: flyering the local supermarket is a good start. oxbridgettutoring.co.uk, enjoyeducation.co.uk, oxbridgtetutor.com
GOING OUT > The good news about living in London is that you never need to listen to Cindies cheese again (unless you want to). The bad news is, you’ll probably need to pay slightly more than a fiver for it. Time Out is still the undisputed king of club listings, but savvier Londoners head to more niche and budget-friendly sites to find a bargain night out. londonist.com, run-riot.com, london. lecool.com > London’s musuems and art galleries are usually free, but what should you do there’s an Gauguin exhibition on and you need to get tickets? Membership to galleries like the Tate is only £52 a year, and that will get you past all the queues. TRANSPORT > If you’re friends with any students in London, you’ll know that they get a third off all public transport. This discount is only meant to be available for students based in London, but guess what – you can get it too, if you have a National Rail youth pass. Just ask for your Oyster card to be converted to the youth pass and show your rail pass at any Tube station office. Voila. > Bring your bike to London – thanks to Boris, it’s never been easier to ride a bike around the city. Transport for London will even mail you bike maps of your neighbourhood to help you navigate your way around, while online route planners help take the guesswork out of travel. Just remember your bike lights and your helmet. tinyurl.com/r3brc4 > There are lots of places in London to get a bike, from trendy fixed-gear shops to Dutch town bicycles boutiques. These are all incredibly expensive and you shouldn’t bother, since bike theft in London is rampant. There are some good licenced second-hand bike shops around the capital (some are listed here). The Beginner’s Guide to the City You might have heard of many of the firms in this guide in a peripheral manner; maybe you’ve got their name emblazoned on the back of your rowing jacket, or had their emails dropping into your Hermes inbox; you may even have sampled the free wine and cheese at one of their network -ing events, without being much the wiser as to what they actually do, or, more importantly, what you would be doing if you snagged a job with them. Here, two recent Cambridge grads break down the jargon and gently guide you around The City. Investment Banking For a lot of people in this industry, the title of ‘investment banker’ is misleading; they don’t really invest at all. In fact they are more like advisors. They might, for instance, be advising companies on what are called ‘mergers and acquisitions’ (M&A Advisory); when one company buys another company, investment bankers are brought in by the respective managements teams to make sure that they are making the correct decisions: How much to pay? Is it a good idea? How to appease the shareholders? The best known investment banks are typically of two types: ‘bulge bracket’ (big) bank such as JP Morgan or Goldman Sachs or a boutique (smaller) bank like Greenhill or Moelis. There are countless other roles at investment banks from trading (buying and selling commodities) to researching and writing brokers reports (documents which give advice to investors on whether to buy or sell shares in particular companies). The hours, particularly in the first few years, will be long, often continuing well beyond midnight and also on weekends. Compensation (what you earn, including bonus and other options) reflects this and can become vast as you progress. A first year (analyst) is likely to take home £50,000 - £90, 000. For the very best, a decade in, this could be as much as £2m a year and if you reach the top, it could be tens of millions.

Varsity Guide to Careers 2011
Consultancy In general, consultants do one of two things. The first is help companies to do things they knew they wanted to do but didn’t know how. The second is advising companies to do things they didn’t know they should do in the first place. The former is done by the ‘operational’ or ‘management’ consultants. Here, companies pay for experience and knowledge in a specific area: technology, internal communications, supply-chain management and so on. Consultants only have value when the skills required are not available within the company that requires them. Amongst the best known operational consultants are Accenture and Deloitte. The latter group is the ‘high level thinking’ (big picture) or so-called ‘strategy consultants’ and well known firms in this area include McKinsey, Bain, PwC and OC&C. These firms help their clients to work out what to do in the future: What should they expand and what should be closed down? Should they buy? If so, what and where? In essence the second type try to answer the sort of questions the CEO is thinking about, while the first look at solving the problems that concern Directors and Managers. Working hours at consultancy firms compare favourably to investment banks. It is by no means a walk in the park though, with an average day being ten hours or more. It is very rare to work on a weekend however. Salaries reflect this, with first year graduates earning just over £35, 000. A 30-year old Director could earn between £150,000 and £300,000 and a Partner from £400,000 to £1m.
Private Equity It is very rare to go straight into PE as a graduate, though it is possible - the industry is rather where a large proportion of graduates in banking or consulting hope to end up. Private Equity is perhaps the most lucrative industry of them all. PE firms (or ‘houses’), such as Blackstone and KKR, buy and sell companies in hugely leveraged deals. What this means is that when they make an investment, most of the money they use is not their own; it is borrowed. The result is that if a company doubles its value over the five years that it is PE-owned (so, say from £100m to £200m) and 90% of the initial investment was leveraged (so they only used £10m of their own money), then after interest has been paid back on the initial investment can be vast (£85m made in five years from a £10m investment). Of course, getting this right requires a certain amount of expertise, determination, hard work and of course, good luck. This is why a training in consultancy or banking can be so critical here to understanding the fundamental workings of businesses. Hours vary hugely depending on the firm but are likely to be similar to consulting until you become senior. A typical 25-year old setting out with a PE house might earn six figures and five years later, this could be as much as £1m. At the top of the PE world, earnings are almost limitless, with the most successful figures in London taking home tens of millions annually and occasionally more.
Law Advising companies on all aspects of the law, corporate lawyers facilitate business deals by guiding their clients through what can be very complex areas of the law. As a corporate lawyer, you’re less likely to be involved in litigation, much more so to spend long hours sitting behind a desk with a copy of the Takeover Code. A keen eye for detail and the ability to build good relationships with clients and other lawyers is absolutely essential, whilst the will to work long and occasionally unpredictable hours also helps. The field is dominated by the five leading ‘Magic Circle’ firms: Allen and Overy, Clifford Chance, Freshfields, Linklaters and Slaughter and May. Other big names include Herbert Smith, Macfarlanes and Travers Smith. As a trainee in a large city firm, you’re likely to earn around £33 000, often rising to on qualifying.

ENGINEERING, EMMANUEL 2005, WORKING FOR ENSOFT
How did you start working for Ensoft? How long have you worked for them?
At the start of my final year at university I applied for a wide variety of engineering jobs. As I went to more and more interviews, I realised that software was what I wanted to do, which thankfully narrowed down the possibilities! I thought the work at Ensoft sounded interesting and I liked the prospect of joining a company which invests a lot of time and effort in training its new recruits. Now, two years after joining Ensoft, I know I made the right choice. What was the recruitment process like?
The recruitment process for Ensoft was by far the shortest and most convenient of all the jobs I applied for. It comprised a short test and a couple of interviews which took place in Cambridge, so there was no need to travel anywhere! I did visit the company before accepting the job, but this was after the end of Michaelmas term when I had more time on my hands. Can you describe exactly what you do for the company?
I am a software engineer at Ensoft and work in a small team of 4 people. My job involves developing code for the operating system running on Cisco’s high-end routers. There’s a lot to learn, both from a telecoms and software perspective, but I’ve always liked a challenge. What are the hours like?
I tend to work from 9 – 6, however software engineering is deadline dependent, so some
weeks are inevitably longer than others. Ensoft is very flexible about working hours; the emphasis is on doing the work rather than clocking in and out at set times. I enjoy working in a job where I can fit in a game of tennis at lunch time! Do you find that an Oxbridge education gave you any kind of advantage/ disadvantage in your line of work?
At Ensoft there is a large amount to learn from the outset and the work is based around developing solutions to problems through logical thinking and taking new approaches. Some of the contents of your Oxbridge degree may not be used directly, but the analytical skills and ability to learn will be put to good use! Where do you see yourself in a few years with the company?
Over the next few years I intend to keep developing, both technical and professionally. I am currently mentoring a new employee; it’s nice to have the opportunity to pass on my knowledge and see how far I have come over the past 2 years. I am starting to take on more responsibility for larger sections of projects and want to continue this further over the coming months / years. What do you enjoy most about your work with Ensoft?
I particularly enjoy the problem solving aspect of my job, whether it be discussing design issues or diagnosing bugs in the code. A strong emphasis at Ensoft is put on good communication within the company and a considerable amount can be learnt from discussions with others.
What kind of work can people expect to be doing in their first year at Ensoft?
After a few weeks initial training, new employees are put into a team to start work on real projects straight away. Ensoft prioritises bringing new employees up to speed as quickly as possible; each new employee is assigned a specific person within their team to give them help and guidance. How much/ what kind of guidance is given to you when it came to developing your career goals?
I have an appraisal once a year, where I, and my line management, can assess my progress. It’s an opportunity to speak to managers in the company, from my day to day manager to the managing directors, regarding my progress and goals for the coming year. Can you describe Ensoft’s ideal employee?
Ensoft’s ideal employee needs to be an intelligent, logical thinker, who is driven and takes pride in their work. An interest in software development is obviously required; software experience is not a prerequisite, however a willingness to learn is! Good communication skills are very important, as communication with other members of the company, and particularly within teams, underpins the work we do.

Patrick Farmborough LAW, CORPUS 2007, WORKING FOR TEACH FIRST
Why did you start working for Teach First?
What are your day-to-day responsibilities?
I found it wrong that one of the strongest predictors of a child’s success in life was their parent’s income. Pupils from independent schools were fifty five times more likely to get into Cambridge last year than a pupil receiving Free School Meals. Teach First let me do something about it.
Like any Teach First participant, I see my job as trying to motivate and inspire pupils to push themselves further than they realise they can go. Mostly this involves trying to plan creative and engaging lessons, trying to actually deliver the lesson to a room of 30 teenagers, and marking.
What was the recruitment process like?
It was pretty intensive. I had to complete an online application which focused on my positions of responsibility, and then attended an assessment day which was made up of an interview, group task and teaching a mock lesson. And what about training?
Teach First put everyone on a six week intensive residential training course over the summer, and after that you join your school in September! But you get a lot of support, both from Teach First, your school, and your university training provider throughout the year. Can you describe exactly what you do for the company?
I’m currently in the second year of the two-year Leadership Development Programme, teaching English at Westminster Academy, London. Since I joined, I’ve also started up the Duke of Edinburgh Award, and I’m in charge of the Academy’s Student Leadership Programme (Prefects, School Council etc).
What are the hours like?
More than you’d expect for teaching! I usually get into school at around 07:00, and leave when the building shuts at 19:00, although I sometimes have to take marking home. I usually have to do a bit of work over the weekend too. On the other hand, I have no complaints about my 13 weeks of holiday per year! Do you find that a Cambridge education gave you any kind of advantage or disadvantage in your line of work?
It’s a big advantage. It’s great for raising pupil’s aspirations, as it really helps to demystify the idea of going to a top university. Where do you see yourself in a few years with the company?
I haven’t decided yet! One of the great things about Teach First is it gives you really valuable leadership and teamwork skills, which you can transfer to almost any sector. That said, I really enjoy teaching and I love my school, so I think I’d find it pretty difficult to turn down a third year!
What do you enjoy most about your work with Teach First?
Nothing can compare with the buzz when a lesson is going really well, or the pride you get from seeing your pupils succeed. It doesn’t matter whether it’s watching a really bright pupil get their first A*, seeing my first DofE group complete their expedition in the pouring rain, or just watching one of my bottom set Year 11s actually manage to sit down, focus and produce a coherent essay; there’s nothing like it. What kind of work can people expect to be doing in their first year at Teach First?
You’ll be teaching your own classes from day one. The first six months tend to consist of blind panic as you try to maintain some degree of order, but then things start to fall into place as you get to know your students and you start to see them really making progress. Can you describe Teach First’s ideal employee?
Teach First participants are really diverse; I don’t think there’s an “ideal” employee. All you need is a commitment to helping disadvantaged young people, a willingness to lead, and a lot of determination. The rest will fall into place.

Alex Davies COMPUTER SCIENCE, ST JOHNS 2008, WORKING FOR RED GATE
How did you start working for Red Gate?
advantage or disadvantage in your line of work?
I went to a few careers fairs in my final year at Cambridge. I met some people from Red Gate at one of those. They seemed friendly, and I was interested in working in Cambridge, so I applied.
Sure, the knowledge from the computer science course is useful as a developer. There are a lot of people here from Oxbridge, especially the technical staff, but there are also a lot of people from all sorts of backgrounds, letting you out of the bubble.
What’s the recruitment process like?
You just need to send in a CV to apply. Then there is an assessment task to do, which seems a pain, but it’s worth it to make sure you’re working in a company with great colleagues. After that, you do two interviews, where you are asked to write code to show that you really are good enough to work here. Can you describe exactly what you do for the company?
Generally, I am a Software Engineer (or Developer). But I’ve had the opportunity to try out lots of other roles at Red Gate. For example, I’ve tried project management, been involved in recruiting, and organised the summer internships for students. Right now, I’m acting as a startup, working autonomously to try to bring a brand new product idea to life as fast as possible. What are the hours like?
Red Gate has flexitime, so I can choose whatever hours I like. I tend to average the contracted 40 hours each week, but sometimes I turn up to work really late, or do something at the weekend that I’m really excited about. Do you find that an Oxbridge education gave you any kind of
Where do you see yourself in a few years with the company?
I hope that in a few years, the new product that I’m working on now will have been a success with customers, and I’d be running a team working on it and other similar ideas. If not, I’m sure I’d be doing something else interesting. I can’t tell you whether I’ll want to continue with technical work or move into something else, but I know Red Gate will let me do whichever is best for me. What do you enjoy most about your work with Red Gate?
The best thing is the other people who work here. They are great to learn from and open to new ideas. They will trust you as soon as you want the responsibility, and support you when you need it. We like a good disagreement, and the idea that wins is the best one rather than the one from the boss. The other important bonus is that because we have many customers, and keep to small projects, most of the painful parts of the software industry just aren’t an issue. What kind of work can people expect to be doing in their first year at Red Gate?
If you start in a technical job like
me, you’ll be working on either products or important infrastructure. Your work will be used and appreciated, usually by thousands of customers. You’ll be in at the deep end, but the rest of your team will be there to help. We largely use C# for coding, we use agile techniques to make sure we’re building the right thing right, and we have the best tools and equipment money can buy to avoid wasting time. What kind of guidance is given to you when it came to developing your career goals?
My manager and I discuss how I want to develop regularly. I’m not a fan of training courses, personally, we make sure I learn all I can from the other people here. Of course, I can take time out to research and experiment with new technology. When I want to try a new kind of job, I can do that. Can you describe Red Gate’s ideal employee?
Red Gate really likes people who don’t just accept what they’re told, and who really care that the experience is the best it can be for the customers. Obviously you need to be very bright, and have just the right balance of academic talent and practicality. Most importantly, you need to be fun to work with, because the whole point of the company is to bring together a group of people that we all want to spend our time with.

Regardless of whether they are advising government Ministers on the legality of proposed policy, creating new legislation or representing the Government in high profile litigation cases, it is fair to say that their work is unique, fascinating and challenging in equal measure. The legal solutions they provide pervade almost every aspect of today’s society. It’s a terrific responsibility. As a legal trainee in the GLS, it’s a responsibility you could share. The Government Legal Service (GLS for short) is the term used to refer to the 2000 or so lawyers who work in the legal teams of around 30 central government organisations. These include departments such as the Department of Energy and Climate Change, the Ministry of Justice, Home Office and the Treasury Solicitor’s Department but there are many more. Although the legal teams are organisationally separate, together they form the GLS.

The GLS Legal Trainee Scheme offers you the chance to begin your legal career with a training contract or pupillage in the legal

As a valued member of your legal team, you will be fully involved in a broad range of work. You will have an active role to play in casework. You will liaise with senior policy makers, Ministers and counsel. And you will have the opportunity to participate in the legislative process itself. Trainees and pupils are usually recruited two years in advance. Law students must be in, or have completed, their penultimate year of study. Non-law students must be in, or have completed, their final year. Applicants should apply via the online application form, available on the GLS website.
