Minnesota Youth Soccer and Vetiver Solutions Team Up to Support International Communities

M

YSA is happy to work with Vetiver Solutions, a company dedicated to reducing poverty and malnutrition in Haiti by making sustainable agriculture profitable. Vetiver Solutions was founded by Jesse Abelson, a St. Louis Park High School graduate and MYSA alum. Jesse’s personal connection with soccer is helping grow communities and economic opportunity. MYSA will be donating 75 soccer balls as Vetiver Solutions continues to support the local community of Moreau. In addition to supporting sustainable agriculture and helping farmers expand their local bee population to increase crop yields, Jesse is working on funding a soccer field for the community. The field will provide an economic opportunity for the community by allowing local farmers to sell products during the games, rent out the space, and potentially have a market. Minnesota ODP Players Selected for US Youth ODP National Teams

T

wo Minnesota Youth Soccer ODP players — Osher Zmira of St. Paul Blackhawks and Vivian Rojas Collins of Minnesota Thunder Academy — were selected in 2019 to join the US Youth Soccer ODP National Teams abroad. We caught up with each of them to hear their thoughts in advance of their international visits, and on how ODP has impacted their careers.

Osher Zmira

’05 Boys 2019 USYS ODP National Team ST. PAUL BLACKHAWKS

What are you most nervous for? “I’m nervous about playing in front of all the scouts from the European teams that are going to be watching us play.” What are you doing to prepare for the trip? “Showing up to my club’s practices every day, keeping my grades up so the school lets me go in the first place, and putting in the work to improve on whenever I can.” In what ways has ODP helped you to grow as a player and teammate? “Before I knew ODP even existed, I was a good player, but I was raw and unharnessed. Now, after three years of ODP at all levels, I have upped my game by a thousand levels. ODP also taught me how to lead a team the right way. “Being a part of U.S. National Teams is crazy to me. It’s a bit frightening, too; I don’t want to lose my spot. It has opened up so many doors that I didn’t think would ever open for me. A few academies and DA teams are starting to contact me, even colleges. This just goes to show that there is more than one way to reach your goals. For me, that’s to go pro in Europe, and being a part of this team gets me one step closer.”

Vivian Rojas Collins

Selected to ‘05 Girls 2019 USYS ODP National Team MINNESOTA THUNDER ACADEMY

What is a memorable ODP experience? “One memorable experience I had from the National Training Camp is when we went to watch the U17 National Team game against China. It was very fun to watch such a high level of soccer from girls only a few years older than us.” In what ways has ODP helped you grow as a player and teammate? “ODP has helped me to learn how to bond with and get to know people in very short amounts of time.” How do you feel about being selected for the US Youth Soccer ODP National team? “I was very excited and honored to be chosen to be on the ODP National Team. I think that it has been a great experience, and I had a lot of fun with my teammates at the National Training Camp. To all aspiring or current ODP players, my advice is to always work hard and be respectful to yourself and others.”

Talking TO Your Child’s Coach

A

By Tony Englund | Director of Coaching Development, St. Croix Soccer Club

mong the many challenges of parenting is contemplating how to talk with a coach. Every year, countless awkward discussions take place, often leaving both parents and coaches feeling less than satisfied with the exchange. This is even more disappointing given that the vast majority of parents and coaches set out with good intentions. So, when and how should a parent approach a coach? Think about the “when” first. Parents often approach a coach immediately after a match, and more often than not, this will not produce a useful result. The parent is emotional, the coach is thinking about the game. Often, the coach is taken by surprise by the approach and many become defensive. Use an indirect approach whenever possible. Sending an email gives the coach time to think about the situation before responding, and also puts both the inquiry and response in writing, which should comfort both parties. Once again, it’s best not to email the day of a match. Sleep on it, and then use the cues below to frame your approach to the coach. Build the “what” of your inquiry and the meeting itself around being constructive. If the parent and the coach can agree from the outset that the goal is to help improve the experience of the child, then

both parties can often begin to see the point of view of the other person and the child. Here are some specific tips for guiding communication. 1. Ask questions designed to understand the other person’s point of view. For a parent, it might be as simple as, “How do you see my child within the group?” For a coach, “How do you think your son or daughter has been playing?” These cues welcome input and put the child’s experience at the center of the discussion. 2. Avoid accusations, as this immediately puts the other person on the defensive and creates space and tension, rather than room for understanding.

can do to increase their role on the team (be constructive!). 5. Try to develop an action plan with the parent, child and coach all involved. Extra training? More communication and feedback? These elements usually improve the experience of the child. 6. It is important to state clearly that if the issue involves a serious or dangerous concern with the coach, parents should immediately and directly contact the club. 7. As players reach fourteen and fifteen years old, encourage them to communicate directly with their coach as a first step and as part of their maturation and socialization.

3. Another challenging maxim for parents is to eschew comparisons between their child and other team members. Coaches will want to focus on the family in question, and not comparative discussions of the qualities of other children.

It’s important to remember that parents and coaches both want an outstanding, successful experience for every player, and that communication needs to be thoughtful and constructive.

4. If the lone issue is playing time, be sure (both parties) understand club policies before meeting. This subject should be approached from the perspective of trying to find out what the child
