I do not want to write that I’m handing over a magazine that you can’t find anywhere else, because you probably can. I also do not want to say that we are the alternative to Polish lifestyle and fashion magazines, because perhaps we are not at all. I’m stressed out. I’m stressed out if we’ve picked the right photos, if the editing is okay, if we haven’t made any spelling mistakes, if maybe the other cover photo would do better. I’m writing this and my palms are sweating a bit, you know? Such blunt, rough epidermis. It’s the stress. And the excitement. One June day I took some photographs of Varsovie’s co-founder, Zuza Jasińska. Each got up at 3 a.m. to make it to the sunrise and with the swollen eyes we walked through Old Mokotów in pursuit of a good location to shoot. A few minutes after 4 a.m. the sun rose and so did the temperature treating us with 30ºC. Suddenly we felt in Warsaw like on holidays. No rush, no stress.

Editor-in-chief

I want this magazine to be a visual pleasure of yours. Since I’m myself aesthetically stretched between the 90s’ nostalgia and the Millenial Internet rush, working on the magazine I sought for the balance between these two extremes soaking it in the summerish sun and some nudity. The contributors we chose seem to perfectly fit this vision with their fresh and daring attitude. The models seem to forget about the feminist theory of the male gaze. The stylists and MUAs are playing with conventions. These young and free people are not afraid to risk, to shock and to experiment. And in my very own mind Varsovie is supposed to be the gist of this paragraph packed with some nice ideas. Did we manage to do that? You are here to judge it for yourself. Zosia Zija and Jacek Pióro: the authors of plenty photoshoots, album covers, commercials and what’s more - they create video clips. They into portrait photography mostly, but commercial and fashion projects aren’t something new to them. They cooperate with most of Polish magazines. The authorial, non-commercial works of Zosia and Jacek were released within individual and collective exhibitions in Poland and abroad. Sandra Żyłka: a fashion and portrait photographer inspired by minimalism and seeking for the calmness in the look of her models. In her stories she loves returning to the good old 90s’. She lives and creates in Gdańsk. Ewa Mos: works in the creative business for 10 round years. Practically every form of an artistic expression is close to her heart. Illustration and photography first, but also street art, fashion, video, painting and stage design. A graduate of Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. In her works Ewa combines photography and illustrations creating a completely new reality that mixes with our imagination. Her latest work, created for Samsung USA in cooperation with Wieden+Kennedy was displayed all over wall screens at New York Times Square. She has already cooperated with: Samsung, MISBHV, Butter Cut, Esquire Magazine, The Wall Street Journal and much much more. Miłosz Rebeś: also known as RBS Photo. 25 years old, native citizen of city Zakopane, domesticated Varsovian. Skier since always, long time skateboarder, photographer since 2013. Thanks to his dad, Milosz was always tied with different kind of sports, which leveled his personality and his point of view. He is a former member of Polish National Alpine Skiing Team. He published in many domestic and foreign magazines, as the only photographer in Poland has published photos in three best magazines in skateboarding industry such like Thrasher Magazine, Transworld Skateboarding and The Skateboard Mag. Marta Jamrozy: born in 1987, the young human being on trail of objectively the worst fashion you can imagine. Reportedly a ‘blogger’ and also a “Faszyn from Raszyn” founder. Sometimes an influencer. Martina Matencio: was born in Vilanova i la Geltrú, a seaside town close to Barcelona. She studied artistic photography in 2011 at Serra i Abella Art and Design School. Combining artistic photography with fashion and commercial, Martina has worked for several fashion and jewellery brands in Barcelona, London or Tokyo. Recently, she has published Tus ojos, mis manos (Stendhal Books, 2017), a book that combines her iconic photography with actress and writer Alba Ribas’ poetry.

Editor and screenwriter of television and movie formats. Winner of the Script Fiesta festival (2017). Jakub Szymański: for me the photography equals meeting, emotions, looks, hands, coffee, cigarettes or whisky - it’s really everything that surrounds us, but the photography itself the least. The photo is just a side effect. I’m inspired by women, urban surroundings, cloudy skies and a short days. The beauty of photography lies in the possibility of creating the reality of our own - lying and telling the truth at the same time. Maksym „MR.” Rudnik: a Warsaw-based artist born in 1992 in the Polish mountanis. In between his commercial assignments he is editing projects in his darkroom. Currently he’s working on a long term project about Athens which will be exhibited and a book will be published. She’s got a dog - Ufi that accompanies her during photoshoots causing plenty of delight among the crews. The photographs taken by Malwina are really personal, depicting her sensuality and making them feel fresh and individual. She gets a lot of charm and seductiveness out of the models she works with. She loves photographing women.

MARTINA MATENCIO

VARSOVIE: You are very economical in form. Your photographs are more of a poetry than a modern photography. Could you please elaborate a bit on your style and how you worked it out throughout the time? MARTINA: It is an honour that my photography is seen almost as poetry. For me, poetry is like music: full of feelings. To be honest, the development of my style has been progressive, little by little I have found my own style, my own way of doing‌ I have never stop growing and learning new stuff about light and that is one of my major motivations. Creating is as infinite as poetry.

V: Would you agree with the statement that colours play a huge role in your photos? How do you choose them? What inspires you? M: Yes, I agree, colours do play a very important role in my photography. However, there is nothing set or defined about those colours, it is just a question of ‘balance and harmony’, it just happens naturally. In a way, it is the colours themselves that inspire me: one inspires me to approach the other...

V: In your photos you clearly show that you understand the saying “devil’s in the details” well. What catches your eye the most and why? M: Well, yeah, details are very common in my photography. I like to capture things that are not always noticeable at first sight, so you need to pay a little more attention. I think details in photograph give you more to think about, you never know exactly how the image will continue, it gives a sense of mystery – and I find that very appealing.

V: We can see a lot of different emotions on faces of the models you photograph. What are your ways of getting that out? How do you pull the realness out of people who stand in front of your lens?

M: I really think it’s my own emotions, maybe unconsciously, but I do feel it is my reflection more than the models’. I guess both sides count, the models’ emotions and mine, the only issue is that mine are not directly visible.

V: You photograph nude models quite often. What is your approach towards sexualisation of female body?

M: Yes, I photograph the female body all the time. I photograph it because I like it, I find it very special and beautiful. I feel like every picture is like a map to get somewhere, a place I still don’t know where it is :)

V: How do you think the popularity and accessibility of Instagram influences m o d e r n photography?

M: We know that nowadays social media networks are very accessible and a click away for almost everybody. They are easy tools to use and they provide a way to connect with other people. Their influence depends on how you handle them. For me, they are a tool to give me visibility, a window to the world and I love that.

VARSOVIE: You mix the reality with a cartoonish vision of your own. What are the tools that you use to create the art?

EWA: I started very analog, without any tablet – I draw everything by hand and markerpen on the paper, then scan it and use Photoshop to match it and give colors, some digital magic. Nowdays I use WACOM Cintiq and it makes my work much easier, and precise, however I miss pen and paper a lot! It started to be popular now along with new technology and it’s the fact, that everyone can draw over photography on their Smartphones – just try it! But I was one of the first ones!

V: What is your main inspiration and driving force when it comes to your works? E: Basically literally EVERYTHING! Obviously some stuff more than the other, but it’s definitely not the one thing. I love nature and organic shapes, you can find everywhere around you. It can be a branch or leaf, sand or water, but also smoke or animals or someone’s hands or a skeleton! I know it’s a hard mix! I’m a huge fan of tattoos Art also. Beside that - I love silly interior design props, like a plastic little crocodile or looking Alpaca alike notebook with fur on the cover and lama’s face… The most

important is imagination and to keep it awake – so I love to read kid’s books like Pippi Långstrump or Andersen’s fairy tales. Which both are not necessary books for children. Music of course – lately, I’m super embarrassed about it, but I enjoy the most to work listening Gigi D’Agostino! I love fashion photography and tbh fashion in general, streetfashion especially. It’s absolutely an Art as well. And always loyal to the History of Art – I discovered amazing app, that brings you portion of the best from the Art World, every day, called just DailyArt. Highly recommended!

V: How does your working process look like - starting from the very first idea to the ready-to-publish piece?

E: Ufff! That’s the hardest question! Cause it’s really hard to put it in words! So maybe long story-short. It has two sides: poetic one and very practical and both can be a danger, haha! The poetic one makes you come up for the ideas and make your brain work and follows your hand. Practical needs to know why da fuck this layer disappeared and you can’t get back in the history in Photoshop, and stop you from destroying computer. I’m usually also taking pictures, so the process can be very long – including finding right ideas, figuring out photography, sketches. The nicest part is obviously making the final version of the project (the most annoying – changes).

VARSOVIE: Tell us something about your workshop - what type of phone do you use and what tools do you use to give your pictures this distinct style of yours? MARTA: I take pictures with iPhone 6+. I love VSCO app and I’m faithful to the one preset.

V: Your Instagram profile is very consistent in style and vision. What are the main criteria when it comes to selecting the content to post to your grid? M: I love playing with colour since it gives the energy. Lightning is also very important to me. I publish things that inspire me and please the eye. What happens on my grid isn’t strictly planned. I treat my Instagram as some kind of notes in the private calendar. Sound cliché, but it’s the attempt to save the moments. I love returning to them.

V: You use a mobile phone to capture the reality around you. Don’t you miss the depth of field and all the advanced possibilities that professional cameras give us?

M: I dropped my DSLR camera a long time ago. A mobile phone is the challenge! Taking a good picture with your telephone doesn’t seem like a huge achievement, but it doesn’t necessarily has to be this way!

VARSOVIE: You are the graduate of Sopot School of Photography. Do you think this place allowed you to grow and flourish as a fashion photographer and the artist?

SANDRA: I quit Sopot School of Photography after the first year because the level of participants and their sense of aesthetics vere far from mine - inhibiting my personal development‌ for me the practice and taxonomy were the most important factors. You cannot ease up on yourself, but have to constantly work on your photographs. Immersing in art and being surrounded by it helps finding out your sense of style and aesthetics.

V: Who are the photographers who influenced the way you perceive the reality and aesthetics in your works?

S: The photographers who inspired me as the first ones were Richard Avedon, Annie Leibovitz and Helmut Newton. From then I just knew that the fashion is what I want to capture in my photos.

V: You cannot hide your thing for fashion. What are your favorite brands that you managed to capture on your photos and what designers you cross your fingers to work with in the future?

S: It’s hard to pick my favorite brands or the designers I worked with because each cooperation was unique. I’m pleased by the fact that the group of people I work with is constantly growing. My dream is to have the possibility of shooting with Balenciaga or Off-White.
