Bringing Europe together zmaj media

Dear delegates, What you are about to view is an effort to enhance your pre-session preparation and contribute to your own knowledge-gaining. Make sure to read this issue and take with you whatever you need, to ask questions yourself. For us, it is the first of many pieces that aim to question and explore. And that is what Zmaj Media aims to achieve through its output, that you will of course enjoy through the course of the next weeks. Why Zmaj? Zmaj in Slovenian means Dragon, which is the symbol of Ljubljana. As a team, we really wanted to emphasize on the meaning that this city has not only to the session itself but to our future work. We hope you enjoy this piece! See you soon in Ljubljana, and let’s fly! On behalf of Zmaj Media, Vasilis

The dissolution of Integration But what if Integration stood for “Unity”? by Afrodite Karatagli (GR)

When thinking of the term European Integration, one can go back to a number of milestone events that led to the broader and deeper Integration the European Union is experiencing at the moment. The implementation of the Treaty of Maastricht (1992), for example, was crucial for both political and social Integration and the creation of Eurozone (1999) could be considered as a contribution to the economic aspect. Thinking it through, as attractive as the idea of “Unity in Diversity” sounds, it is now actually a not so easy challenge. The differences in the mentality and expectations of each Member State convert the topic of “European Integration” into a highly contradictory

one. Certain - and rising, at the time being - political parties, claim that the process of Integration seems to threaten their State’s national sovereignty and integrity. Radical views, point out that States’ autonomy is vanished, as it is colonized by unity. They support that rapid integration might presently bring “more harm than good”. Europeans are currently divided along ideological lines on their views of the EU and Eurosceptic ideas stem from the above perceptions. An amount of people connects Integration with bureaucracy, financial control, inequalities and that’s where anti-EU beliefs and withdrawing tendencies derive from.

However, as a coin has two sides, there are also other domains where future-integrative progress would undoubtedly - turn beneficial. Social Integration in education and health would invigorate the European unification process and in the domain of foreign and security policy, a common European Project - in an effort to deal with potential external dangers would be far more effective than isolated actions. A more specific example would be the immigration crisis, a challenge with which most of the European Member States struggle daily. A common strategic plan for the equal flow and distribution of refugees within the Union and united actions, concerning the provision of humanitarian help. would be constructive for

every part of the equation: the Member States, the European Union and the immigrants. Lets face the truth. What is at stake is huge, as the specter of disintegration is raising its ugly head and, in fact, an integration process that has been the bedrock of a half-century of peace and economic development can no longer be taken for granted. Unfortunately, European cooperation seems to be fading away during the time it is needed the most. However, it is high time Europeans understood that sailing solo into uncharted waters is definitely not going to bring the result they are looking for. It is time that we as people started questioning what we already know and change..

Europe’s highest toilets sit at an elevation of 4,260 meters at Mont Blanc (hikers, there is no need to worry anymore) A man in Switzerland named Beni Meier once grew a pumpkin as big as a car that weighs 1,054 kg (you are expected to make a terrific soup Beni..) Belgium went 589 days in 2010-1 without a government (Belgians wanting to be innovative and cool so they choose to make democracy without a government work, they surely didn’t want to go with the flow).

Is it religion, art, shared history, same ideologies the case - so let’s dissect Europe.

talities? It seems that this is not the case - so let’s dissect Europe. MENTALITY - Europeans share a similar mind, right? Clearly not the case. For example, by some statistics, Northern Europe is much more introverted in compared to the South. Also, it is stated that the North are bigger “workaholics” than the southern part of the continent, where people live more with ease and take things slowly. HUMAN RIGHTS - Human rights have a long history in Europe. The modern idea of human rights came into existence during the renaissance which occurred also in Europe. Nowadays the only European country to still have the death sentence is Belarus. HDI - Europe is seen as one of the most developed and progressive continents. Although, most european countries have a high human development index except for Moldova, which has a medium HDI. RELIGION - While religion still plays a big part across the continent all countries except for Vatican city are secular states.

LANGUAGES - No matter ho the languages are, we can su stand some words? Well, if you countries like Hungary and Fin they don’t speak an indo-eur guage, you very much will bum guage barrier.

So what are the things that th us? How did this place, filled and conflict, become a symbo and unity?

After a bit of research, it seems do not have anything in commo as a European Puzzle is formed least one country that won’t fit within every aspect.

But nevertheless, something going. More and less, we get spite our differences. Maybe achieve the perfect fit. One tra stick to Europeans; a trait tha all happen, from economic gro formation of EYP - diversity. by Igor Pet

There’s a city... Stories from LJU16

by Igor Petr

During Ljubljana 2016, we were staying at a hostel in the Main Street, which is tilted, and goes down to the Main Square. We hung out in front of the hostel, as the Officials wouldn’t let us go anywhere else for safety reasons, but at one point, we couldn’t even hang out outside. It started raining, and within 2 minutes, there were 10 cm of water on the street. So we ran down to the Main Square, got soaking wet and it was pure amazing. For this session, I am very excited. As an Editorial Assistant, who is in charge of photography, I want to emphasize on making memories and make sure that everyone’s memories are captured, and also aesthetically take care of the output. Klara Kokalj, LJU16: Delegate, LJU17: Editorial Assistant

On the night of the 11th july we had Eurovillage and we assigned some organisers to take ca but we forgot to think about the music and some other "details" such as the President's programme etc. Eurovillage was still fun in the end, but we had an urgent Orga-meeting to s out. We started the meeting at around 23:00 and it lasted for at least 3 hours. This meant into the early hours of the 12th of July, which was the day of my 18th birthday. At midn friends and other participants started singing “Happy Birthday: in the lobby of the hostel, whic to the Orga-room. Their singing disrupted our meeting a bit, so I had to go out and ask them are done. I am still very grateful for those people but the moment just wasn’t right. Neverthe ed after 02:00. My biggest hope for the session is to inspire and motivate a group of young is my committee) and provide them with an experience the Jure Majnik, LJU16: Head-Organiser, LJU Last year during the NSC we used “Jodel”, an app you can use anonymously and post opinions, secrets or whatever you wish, like short statuses. People with whom you share a similar location can see your statuses. It was mostly filled with participants of the session, so it was in a way an EYP gossip platform where people posted jokes, stories and date offers. It was really fun and everyone was using it! I know the people will be amazing this year, because I know the Officials Team and some delegates, so I hope that the session is at least half as good as last years, because if it is, it will be absolutely incredible. Last years nationals were the highlight of my summer and I'm looking forward to see whether this session will steal the spotlight because the potential for it is high up in the sky I hope that we will bond inside the media team and help make content that everyone from the session will always be able to go back to and that will bring back all the memories of the good times in Ljubljana. Chiara Pegan, LJU16: Delegate, LJU17: Media Team Member

I was a delegate at last year's nationals and we weren't allowed to leave the hostel in the even every night sitting on the floor in the middle of Čopova street in front of the hostel until 4 day this is one of the busiest streets in the city centre but in the middle of the night there w but us. Committee Challenges by Celine Schaus (LU) In order to welcome you properly at this session, the journalists have thought of a little game to get you pumped and meeting new people quickly. How exactly? Well, below is a list of 8 things each committee needs to accomplish (no cheating!) and the committee that has completed all 8 first, receives a prize from us! In order to qualify, for each step we need to receive proof that you accomplished the task so you will need to make a video or photo which you will send to the session’s instagram per private message or through tagging them on your instagram post, @ljubljana2017. To allow us to distinguish between the committees, incorporate your committee’s name somewhere on the picture/in the video. Get creative ;) Take a funny selfie with a chair from another committee (not yours!). The funnier, the better. Get the entire committee to draw a picture of what Ljubljana means to them and what they like about the city. Compose a short dance routine to your favorite song (at least 4 delegates from your committee should participate!). Take a video of some members of your committee helping an orga with their task. Come up with a creative & funny four-word name for your committee to best describe yourselves. Make a short story by letting everyone in your committee privately write a sentence (with a theme if this makes things easier :P) and then combining the outcome in the most logical way. Dress two people up to look as similar as possible (the more people believe you’re twins, the better!). Find the funniest joke you can and say it on camera with a blank face (no laughing!). Looking forward to your creations!

Dear delegates, Do remember. In Ljubljana, we are going to have fun, make new friends, explore interesting concepts, live an experience beyond our limits. We are going to debate or discuss. Oh yes! We are so going to discuss a lot. We are going to talk about Energy, Terrorism, LGBTQ+ rights or the digital single market. We are going to find ourselves thinking about transport, immigrant unemployment, arts or the future of Europe. Do prepare. The topics are interesting, you are going to learn a lot! Grasping the most you can handle will not only let you participate but also go back home with more knowledge that will surely benefit you. Zmaj Media wants you to keep this in mind. At EYP sessions, we do a lot of things, so that we kind of forget why we came there for. Having goals is important. However, it is equally important as keeping an open mind. And that’s what this issue represents. Let EYP take you to where you would never imagine you could go. Learn new things, try new things, and keep an open mind.

Zmaj Media

see you in Ljubljana!
