Location Nafplio is the first capital of modern Greece. It’s located in the south of Greece, in Peloponissos. The distance from Athens, the capital of Greece, is about 150 km. About 20.000 thousand people live here. It is a beautiful town. It is built by the sea. It is clean, quiet and it is around 2700 years old. According to mythology, it was founded by Nafplios. There are two parts: the old and the new town. The old town of Nafplio is very beautiful. There are old Venetian houses which are wonderful. There are a lot of flowers on the balconies and in the narrow streets.

There are a lot of hotels, restaurants, where you can eat tasty food, cafes, clubs and souvenir shops. There are also museums.
The new town of Nafplio is fantastic, too, because there are great squares and playgrounds, where we can play with our friends. There are many buildings such as cafes, minimarkets, low blocks of flats, modern houses with gardens and supermarkets. There are clothes shops and toyshops. There are lots of schools, a hospital, a police station, a post office, a cinema, a sports centre and parks. Also there are a Court House, a Fire Brigade Station and a public library.

Surroundings Around Nafplio there are beaches, hills and fields. Also, in short distances we can see three important Greek sights. The ancient theatre of Epidavros, the ancient town of Mykines and the oldest town in Europe, Argos.
The nearest clean beaches are Arvanitia, Karathona, Tolo and Plaka- Drepano.

Near Nafplio there are three small rivers: Erassinos, Enachos and Xerias. They usually have water when it rains. There is also a small but deep lake, Lerni. There, Hercules killed Lernea Hydra, a monster, according to mythology.

In the fields around the town there are orange, lemon, tangerine and olive trees. We also produce vegetables, handmade pasta and cheese, like “feta” and “kefalotyri”, wine and the beer ZEOS, which took the second prize as the best beer in the world. Also the olive oil of our area is of great quality. Nafplio is a rich town both in products and history.

The weather is very nice here every season, although summer is the best time to visit Nafplio because it is hot and sunny and you can go to the sea and enjoy swimming, too, besides sightseeing.

Important sights of Nafplio Nafplio is a very beautiful town and it has got lots of interesting sights.

Palamidi” is a Venetian castle in Nafplio. It was a prison in the past. The hill on which it is located is 216 meters high. You can reach it by car or by the 999 stairs. Anyway, the view of the town from up there is fantastic! Palamidi castle
Bourtzi is a castle on a small island in the harbour of the town.

The town of Nafplio is famous for the old churches, the squares and the museums. In the old town we can see the “Agios Spiridonas“ church. Also the church of “Agios Georgios” and the church “Panagia”. And there are more than them, both in the old and the new town. 6

There are beautiful squares, too. The most important are the he Syntagmatos square , the Filellinon square and the Trion Navarchon Square.

Old Nafplio is very beautiful because there are old Venetian houses. There are beautiful plants with fuchsia and purple flowers in the narrow streets. We call them voukamvilies. Also there is a wonderful seaside where you can enjoy your coffee or your ice cream in a café.
“Vouleftiko” is another important building. It was the first Parliament of modern Greece. Today it is used for various activities. In the Art Gallery we can see beautiful paintings. “Trianon” is a theater where you can see nice performances.

It is worth visiting Nafplio because it is a wonderful town. It has got historical monuments and modern facilities, too. If you visit Nafplio, you will get excited! 8
