Disruptive Innovation –
A popular term in the entrepreneurial landscape, disruptive innovation is a term that entrepreneurs love to throw around when they describe their products or services. In our usual life, the word disruption has negative connotations. It means a disturbance or interruption of an activity, which leads to a lot of disorder. But in the entrepreneurial world, disruption is a great term - it refers to a revolutionary innovation that triggers incredible change across the landscape. Disruptive innovations create new markets, brand new market positionings, and new target audiences. What is disruptive innovation? You can thank Clayton Christensen from the Harvard Business School for this brilliant twist to a common term. But many entrepreneurs are misinterpreting the influence of this term today. Disruption does NOT MEAN improvisation or creating brilliant products. Rather, this term means enabling complete change such that the specific product or service is available to a large population, creating new audiences. Examples of disruptive innovation Amazon is the emperor of disruptive innovation - right from using technology to create innovative solutions to overcome the problems of the last mile to
Amazon Go. Technologies such as robotics, augmented reality, and blockchain have enabled such breathtaking innovations. Uber opened up a completely new era of hailing cabs online. Tesla's self-driven cars are yet another example of the extent to which disruptive innovation can influence the entire business landscape. How to create an actual disruptive innovation The answer is not easy - but the key is to be futuristic. Look for unique solutions for pain points, but most important, think different. Talk to people and think simple - the more you network, the more ideas you will get. Don't be scared of change and of failure because it's both these experiences that fuel disruptive innovations. So, the next time you want to claim that your product or service is disruptive - think twice!
