INTRODUCTION

IN:CH Studio 14 constitutes of Architecture and Civil engineering students from Bern University of Applied Sciences and Kamala Raheja Vidyanidhi Institute of Architecture and Environmental Studies Mumbai. During the 16 weeks in India, the students will travel to Wayanad , Ahmedabad , Mumbai and Bangalore, coached at each destination by Indian and Swiss experts. The Indian students will attend a summer school after IN:CH Studio 14 at AHB and then will then have the chance to gain six months experience in a Swiss architecture firm. They will then use this knowledge back in India for their thesis. The theme for this year’s studio is ‘Urban Subculture’. The first eight weeks would be for analyzing the life, living and working situation of marginalized social groups. During this time the students will also learn building techniques with local material, like earth, bamboo, lime, straw and wood. The analysis and projects will be developed holistically, being mindful of influences of design and climate on architecture. We will apply solutions for efficient use of energy from renewable recourses such as wind and solar. Participants will learn how rainwater can be harvested and recycled. During the second phase, we create options for marginalized social groups. The aim is to realise examples and small projects with NGOs. We document the developed concepts of selected works of sustainable architecture and make these in India and in Switzerland. Our activities can be divided into the currently discussed concepts of „ think global - build social“ - and „build-design“. The focus and aim is that we learn from each other and that from the positive mix of Indian and Swiss culture we create a third culture, we develop IN: CH. While the Indian participants learn the Swiss strategy and planning approach, Swiss students learn from the flexible, spontaneous and creative approach of the Indian side. The participants of the IN:CH Studio gain unique personal and professional experiences, which are reflected in their work as measurable results. Awards of individual work and the Credit Swiss Award for Best Teaching confirms this.
