Romantic visual and literary artists glorified huge, complex concepts such as liberty, survival, ideals, hope, awe, heroism and despair all with a sense of otherness. This issue is not to be taken so literal, when we talk about Romance we don’t think flowers, love and infatuation instead we challenge your view of Romance with the juxtaposition of otherness. The imagination, the infinite, the universal, the transcending, the self… the other. This is our Romance!

NIXI K C I L KIL Self professed ‘Imagineer’, Nixi Killick, is utilizing fashion to offer an open dialogue for distilling visions of potential in the unfamiliar.

VATRA 11

Artist born creative, mutant mermaid, stylist and recent fashion graduate from RMIT, Killick uses fashion to negotiate creative constellations, attempting to articulate a utopian freshness adjacent to the possible and impossible, seeking a platform for expression and interface within the critical discourses of visual culture. Integrating a background in circus costume, performance and the arts she embraces creative escapism and indulgence in the bizarre in her efforts to illustrate the volatility orbiting reality.

a form of maverick-hybrid culture her work fosters optimistic interfaces on the art-fashion nexus that intersect at creative body margins, aiming to capture powerful exuberances through lucid displays of imaginative impulsiveness. Considering the articulation of recontextualized materials and machinery, moving forward with techno-optimism and an ethos of hybrid practice, Nixi says ‘ if its not in the future it doesn’t exist.’

The work converges on a vibrant mix of bio-psychedelic street wear and Focussing on a tacit creative do- hybrid-maverick design. With a fomain as an avenue for articulating cus on visceral art prints intersecting

t a o c s n i a W Kiml to watch: Mode

we chat with Australia’s own blond bombshell Kimberley wainscoat. “life is either a daring adventure or nothing’ I used to be afraid of meeting people and going to new places. Now my life is quite the opposite I try to do as much as I can, I know that memories are being made and Im really living”. You have been signed with Chadwick modelling agency since the young age of 14, how has this enabled you to grow as a model? I think it was a real benefit growing up in a smaller fashion industry because it gave me more time to grow and learn, rather then being thrown in the overseas deep end like a lot of models do. So who is your favorite designer? I really don’t have one I get almost all my clothes from op shops or markets. I think most of the brands I wear don’t really exist anymore, I like the feeling of walking down the street knowing I won’t see someone wearing the same thing. You recently moved from Perth to Sydney, how are you finding the fashion industry in Sydney? Its kinda like Perth on steroids, a lot more casting and jobs. Though a lot more models therefore competition! It feels like it’s easier to succeed in the fashion industry here in Sydney. Most designers, models and artists seem to migrate here from around Australia, It’s a creative bunch! As you are still signed with Chadwick in Perth how do you find dividing your time between Sydney and Perth? I love Perth and there really is no place like home, I try to let the agency know in advance when Im coming home so they have time to organise test shoots and the occasional job. I am hopefully coming back for Perth fashion festival, I try to keep in touch with people from the perth fashion industry because their the people that supported me from the very start.

Do you have a favorite photographer or favorite shoot? I have done a few test shoots with photographer Jody Pachnuik, originally from perth too. We work really well together and a great friendship has grown from it. Do you prefer runway or photo shoots, why? Photo shoots, because I have something to look back on when I’m old and hideous. Not really, but maybe for my kids. I love the buzz I get from runway but photo shoots are just different, it’s about movement and almost taking on a character that the team is aiming for.

What is the one beauty tip you swear by? One of my mums tips that she once told me. White vinegar... yep. Whenever I have a pimple I wash my face and then put white vinegar on it because it’s a natural disinfectant to get rid of any bad germs and usually works quickly for me.

When you were 17 you were selected in the top 100 for Australia’s next top model, can you tell us about this experience? It was definitely an experience, I made the decision to leave Chadwicks so I could take a risk and try out for the competition...months of preparation for these things go into them before the first elimination even occurs. As I was in my final year of high school at the time I rushed to complete three months worth of work before going in the competition because that is how long they take to film if you make it that far. I went to Sydney and got kicked out the first day in the top 100 elimination, no regrets at all... I got to fly to Sydney, meet great people and get a glimpse of what really goes on behind the cameras. Also returning to school after already completing the following three months work, well it was lazy days from there on. What is the one beauty tip you swear by? One of my mums tips that she once told me. White vinegar... yep. Whenever I have a pimple I wash my face and then put white vinegar on it because it’s a natural disinfectant to get rid of any bad germs and usually works quickly for me. What do you do to keep fit? Do you have a routine to to maintain a healthy lifestyle? I do a lot of walking going from casting to casting over here especially without having a car. And the scenic walk from Bondi to Bronte Beach gives me a good hour of exercise and I enjoy it...its nothing like a brick wall in a gym. Other than walking/running I just try to eat as healthy as possible. In your modeling career what is the one job you’re most proud of? I would say a recent shoot for the cover of Scoop Magazine, because its a WA one so it was good to see my friends and family congratulating me and seeing me around the place. Mum was especially proud to buy a few copies to add to her modelling shrine of me that she collects, creepy but cute.
