Getting Your Library Card Library cards are free of charge to anyone who lives, owns property, works or goes to school full time in the City of Vaughan. You can join Vaughan Public Libraries in person at any branch and online at www.vaughanpl.info. Whether you apply for your library card in person or online, you will need to bring one of the following to verify your information: • proof of your home address in Vaughan • registration at a school or college in Vaughan, or • proof of employment in Vaughan

Children can get their own library cards. If they are 13 years old or under, the parent or guardian is required to sign the child's library card. If you don't qualify for free membership as described above, you can still join VPL. Please phone any of the branches for details. Visitors to VPL You don't have to have a library card to visit branches of Vaughan Public Libraries to consult library staff or use the print collections on site. If you don’t have a card and wish to use the library's electronic resources, please bring with you valid identification, including your address (e.g. your driver's licence).

Library Services All branches have materials for reference and loan. The most comprehensive reference collections are held at Bathurst Clark Resource Library and the Pierre Berton Resource Library. Books, DVDs, videos and CDs are all available in many languages to meet the needs of our diverse community. Books are also available in large print and as audio books. Community Library Link is a service to facilitate borrowing for people who are temporarily or permanently homebound.

Vaughan Public Libraries now offers a new and convenient Books by Mail service. For a fee of $6 per shipment, your items will be sent right to your doorstep. Qualified staff are always on site in each library to assist you in your search for information. They are also available to advise on leisure reading or on materials appropriate to your child's reading abilities.

Some libraries have study rooms available for groups or individual study and all libraries have meeting rooms available for booking by the public. Pierre Berton Resource Library has both a boardroom and a training suite available for rent. Details of all these services are available from the libraries and on the website.

All libraries provide free access to the Internet and to PCs equipped with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Wireless access is available in all libraries. CD-ROM stations are available for pre-schoolers to learn basic computer and literacy skills. Each library has black and white photocopiers. Colour photocopiers are available at the Resource Libraries.

Outreach Brings the Library to You!

Vaughan Public Libraries now offers programs for children and adults at the new North Thornhill Community Centre and District Park, 300 Pleasant Ridge Avenue.

Join us on Thursday afternoons starting September 16th for Born to Read (infants up to 18 months) from 2 – 3 p.m. or Toddling to Read (children 18 months to 3 years) from 3:30 – 4 p.m. These interactive programs are specially designed for parents, caregivers and their children. We will share stories, songs, rhymes and early literacy activities that can be enjoyed at home. Programs are open to everyone with no registration required, but space is limited. After the program, picture book bags will be available for loan to all participants with a valid Vaughan Public Libraries card.

On the third Monday of each month, the library will host a Book Chat for adults, from 7:30 – 9 p.m. The library will provide a copy of the selected books which are: I Don't know How She Does It by Allison Pearson (Sept. 20); Small Island by Andrea Levy (Oct. 18); and People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks (Nov. 15). Books can be picked up at Bathurst Clark Resource Libraries’ Check Out Desk at 900 Clark Avenue West, or at the preceding month’s book chat.

Celebrate Teen Read Week at VPL With Two Great After Hours Programs!

Teen Read Week takes place from Sunday, October 17th to Saturday, October 23rd. In celebration of Teen Read Week, each library will feature a display containing the hottest novels, magazines and graphic novels for teens! In addition to the displays, Vaughan Public Libraries will be offering two exciting teen only after hours programs to kick off Teen Read Week. Bathurst Clark Resource Library will host Lights Out at the Library; an after hours party at the Library featuring crafts, a movie, music, board games and a Wii! Hang out with your friends, discuss your favourite books, and enjoy some refreshments.

Is an evening of mystery your idea of fun? Pierre Berton Resource Library will be holding a Murder Mystery After Dark! Will you be a victim, or a killer? Come out for an evening of snacks, games, murder and mayhem!

BATHURST CLARK RESOURCE LIBRARY REVITALIZATION The City of Vaughan has been awarded $30 million in infrastructure funding from the provincial and federal governments. VPL Celebrates

Saturday, October 2 & Sunday, October 3 Doors Open Vaughan is a celebration of community heritage, arts, architecture and culture. The program is designed to create access, awareness and excitement about culture in communities and provides residents and visitors with a unique opportunity to explore and enjoy sometimes hidden and always interesting places and spaces. Twelve specially selected buildings will open their doors to the public free-of-charge as part of Doors Open Vaughan 2010. The Pierre Berton Resource Library was selected for its noteworthy architecture. Built in 2004, this state-of-the-art library has received many design awards including an Ontario Library Association Library Building Award in 2007. The library covers 36,000 square feet on two floors and has many special features. To celebrate Doors Open Vaughan, library staff will be offering guided tours of the building and will be hosting daily puppet shows by Applefun Puppetry. A HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR'S TESTIMONY Thursday, November 4, 1 - 2 p.m. Joe Leinburd was born in Suceava, Romania in 1922. The Romanian fascist regime, collaborating with Nazi Germany, deported the entire Jewish population of northern Bucovina and Basarabia to Transnistria, an area in southwestern Ukraine in 1941. Miraculously, his entire family survived a death march from Mogilev to Murafa and were liberated in 1944. He returned home to Romania, got married and left Romania in the fall of 1946. After spending 2 ½ years in Displaced Persons camps, Joe and his wife immigrated to Canada in 1949. For ages 12 and up. No registration required.
