Welcome We’re Growing Again! Greetings from

Devender Sandhu Chair, Vaughan Public Library Board

Welcome to What’sOn at the Library. Libraries have become more relevant as referred to by John Palfrey in his new book BiblioTech: Why Libraries Matter More Than Ever in the Age of Google. Canada's earliest libraries were founded in the 1600s. Ontario introduced Canada's first Free Libraries’ Act in 1882. Today's library services might include everything from new immigrant settlement services to free internet access which has shrunk our world onto our fingertips. Ontario's Public Libraries play a critical role in the social, educational, cultural and economic success of the communities in our province. There are more than 20,000 uses of paper but none as seductive as the book and knowledge hidden in it which is always ready to be harvested to enrich, inspire, and transform our lives. Interestingly, humans are producing 2.5 quintillion bytes of data daily and 90 percent of all existing data is less than two years old in this age of Google, Wikipedia, Facebook and Twitter. Vaughan Public Libraries (VPL) is currently building the Civic Centre Resource Library. Citizens interested in working at the Library are invited to submit their resumes and covering letters to: Recruitment Office, 900 Clark Ave., W., Vaughan, ON L4J 8C1 or VPL.Admin@vaughan.ca.

The magnificent 36,000 square foot, Civic Centre Resource Library located on the City Hall Campus is scheduled to open in 2016.

4

What’sOn

Vaughan Public Libraries (VPL) is currently planning a new library location at the Vellore Village Community Centre at 1 Villa Royale Avenue. The new library will be attached to the existing community centre and will be approximately 8,000 sq ft. in size. Construction will start in the spring of 2016 and the library is projected to open by the summer of 2017. Keep up-to-date on new libraries being built and renovations to existing branches through VPL’s Building Projects Blog at www.vaughanpl.info/ building.

A lot is happening at VPL. Ansley Grove Library celebrated its 25th birthday recently. VPL has been honoured with a Diversity Hiring Award by Corbrook Awakening Abilities for hiring differently abled staff. VPL’s Youth Advocate, Andrea Wesson, has been named Children's Youth Services Librarian of the Year by the Ontario Library Association. We received an Ontario Library VPL named Employer Of The Year Capacity Fund grant for $66,000 and approval for a Youth Internship program in 2015/16. Library Board Trustee and local author, Suri Rosen, won the Youth Literature Award for 2015 from the Canadian Jewish Literary Awards for her book Playing with Matches. VPL has an exciting Annual Success Report Video on VPL’s YouTube Channel.

Come dressed in your pyjamas and participate in our FREE Family Literacy Day festivities! Enjoy entertaining and imaginative stories at our special bedtime story event with Cary Fagan, author of Mr. Zinger's Hat. Bring your library card and check out family-friendly books selected by Vaughan Public Libraries (VPL). Pick up tickets for this free event at any branch of VPL, beginning Monday, Jan. 4. Families will receive a VPL tote bag (one bag per family, with ticket, while quantities last!). For more information, call 905.653.READ (7323).
