Welcome Greetings from
Teens – Don’t Miss Great Teen Events This Fall
Devender Sandhu Chair, Vaughan Public Library Board
Welcome to What’sOn at the Library. Vaughan Public Libraries (VPL) is currently building a magnificent, Civic Centre Resource Library adjacent to City Hall, scheduled to open in early 2016 which will be followed with a new library at the Vellore Village Community Centre in 2017. Libraries play a vibrant role in creating literate environments and promoting literacy by offering reading materials for all ages and literacy levels. Libraries and literacy foster strong partnerships between the public and schools to enable resource sharing and to realize the vision for the importance of education in our daily lives. Literacy is a fundamental human right, a means for social and human development and a precursor for transforming lives. Sixteen percent of the world’s population is illiterate. One in five adults is not literate; two-thirds of them are women. UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) celebrates International Literacy Day on September 8th. As stated by Nelson Mandela “education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Educational enlightenment is essential for eradicating poverty, reducing child mortality, achieving gender equality, ensuring sustainable development, peace and democracy. More than nine million Canadians can’t read or write well, in English, and are lacking numeracy and essential life skills.* In September, make a difference by contributing to the eradication of illiteracy and encourage reading and writing by participating in: • ArrowMight Canada provides adult learning literacy programs and computer courses for English speaking Canadians, Aboriginal and Immigrant learners. What’sOn
Library Services - in person, online or on the phone All branches have materials for reference and loan. The most comprehensive reference collections are held at Bathurst Clark Resource Library and Pierre Berton Resource Library.
Friendly, helpful staff are always available to assist you in your search for information, to advise on leisure reading, or on materials appropriate to your child’s reading abilities. Telephone service is available during open hours. Qualified staff will answer your information and reference inquiries, check your account on your behalf and provide details about library services and programs. Most library services are available online. You can join the library, browse the catalogue, check your account, place a hold on items, search databases, download an Audiobook, eBook, video and much more. You can even submit your reference inquiries by email and get an answer within a few hours, 24/7. See page 15 for a complete list of services available. Access library services on your mobile devices at m.vaughanpl.info or download VPL’s mobile app from the Apple App Store and Apple App Google Google Play. Store
