bookReviews Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard; Book 1: The Sword of Summer by Rick Riordan Reviewer: Donnalee Smith, Youth Services Librarian Fans of Percy Jackson will be thrilled that Rick Riordan has an exciting new series featuring characters from Norse mythology. Odin! Loki! Thor! Plus, other random, cool mythological beings! Magnus has been living on the streets of Boston for two years and has already learned to survive on his wits. Like Percy, Magnus discovers he is a demigod. There are many similarities to the Percy Jackson series, but the lively new characters and fascinating settings keep it feeling fresh. This book is fastpaced, entertaining and full of humour. Even though it’s nearly 500 pages, it still felt like a fast read. Recommended for Grade 5 and up. J FIC MAGNU
Nimona by Noelle Stevenson Reviewer: Richard Anderson, Digital Creation Specialist - Children Here’s a delightful 2015 teen graphic novel that is overflowing with jousting knights and vaults of gold, with dark wizardry and shapeshifting creatures. But how about a YA book with pizza, movie nights, new friends, and a young woman who only seeks to please? Good news – it’s the same book! Noelle Stevenson’s Nimona began as a web comic but it works wonderfully as a much longer novel. Teenaged, Nimona wants to be sidekick to the nefarious Lord Blackheart (dastardly arch-villain to hero Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin) but has trouble controlling both her sassy attitude and her awesome, city-destroying monster powers. The book is silly, irreverent, heartwarming, and laugh-out-loud funny. It also has enough magic spellcasting and dragon-vs-henchmen battles for any serious fantasy fan. YA Steve
An American Bride in Kabul: A Memoir by Phyllis Chesler Reviewer: Zena Tenenbaum, Adult Services Librarian This memoir is surprising to those who recognize the name of its author, Phyllis Chesler, noted American feminist/academic. What on earth was she doing in an Afghani harem? The story is actually instrumental in forming her feminist philosophy. As an 18 year-old college student, Phyllis meets and falls in love with a foreign student. They marry and travel to his home in Kabul. Her American passport is confiscated and her life is turned upside down. Her seemingly westernized husband reverts to the customs of his family and culture and she is left to fend for herself in a tribal, polygamous household. Written nearly 50 year later it’s told with a measure of nostalgia for the beauty of the East, but also a plea not to ignore the plight of women in Muslim countries. 305.89240581 Che

Impulsively, she travels to the island of Corfu, where she finds the strangers she dreamed of. One of them is charming, sexy Bran Killian, with magician’s hands.
