Welcome Greetings from
Devender Sandhu Chair, Vaughan Public Library Board
Welcome to What’sOn at the Library What a fantastic year this has been at Vaughan Public Libraries (VPL) with many wonderful Canada 150 activities and events! The fun continues throughout the fall with programs such as a special literary reading by author and playwright, Allan Stratton (p. 12) and the Vaughan 150 Dream Weaver Project (p. 5). Celebrate the conclusion of our Canada 150 events at Vaughan Loves Reading (p. 16), an after-hours evening on November 25 for Vaughan’s literati with the launch of a compilation of local writers’ works in Voices of Vaughan: a Canada 150 Anthology and a reading by best-selling and award-winning author of Lullabies for Little Criminals, Heather O'Neill!
Happy Canada 150 greetings from the Vaughan Public Library Board
You enjoy your library with its thousands of programs and the collection of over 500,000 items, but did you know the library also helps you to save money? In 2016, 3,281,343 items were borrowed by Vaughan residents, instead of being purchased, equalling an average savings of $1,112 per household! Would you like to know how much your family saves? Visit the Savings Calculator on our website at
Recent groundbreaking of VMC Library
www.vaughanpl.info/about/calculator to calculate the total value of your library use! For those heading back to school, be sure to access VPL’s collection and its variety of databases to help with your projects and homework. For example, Academic One File is filled with full-text articles from the world's leading journals and reference sources from 1980 to present day. Containing 82,719,194 articles and last updated in July 2017, it’s full of inspiring stories like Ms. Julie Payette, soon to become the 29th Governor General of Canada and one of 10 Canadians to go to space. Progress continues on the two new libraries under construction, Vellore Village South Library and the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre (VMC) Library. Stay up to date with all of the details on our Building Projects blog, www.vaughanpl.info/building. The Vaughan Public Library Board thanks Mr. John Senisi, art teacher at St. Jean de Brebeuf Catholic High School, and his grade 9 and 10 art classes who created the public art collage based on works by HENSE and Ed Emberley. Be sure to check out the variety of programs and services offered at VPL — they will enrich, inspire, and transform your life!

THE DREAM WEAVE
#DREAMWEAVE This project is inspired by Vaughan’s vibrant past and future – including, but not limited to: • the wheels in motion as we bring the new Vaughan Metropolitan Centre to life the colours and intertwining landscapes of Group of Seven paintings • • the circles and spokes of our historic mills • the threads that connect us to our past at the Binder Twine Festival • the modern-day wheels of wonder at Wonderland • multiple layers of culture and language – including an attempt to honour the artistic and cultur of First Nations artists. The Dream Weaver Project is a collective, evolving, community art experience that will reconnect us to our roots while inviting us to dream of the future.

The Dream Weaver logo is an origami-like version of the Canada 150 logo. The colours and angles of original logo have been transformed into a globe – expressing the global outlook of the City of Vaug The logo evokes multiple ideas and connections including: weaving, relationship, layers, dimension, as well as multiple cultures, peoples and backgrounds. A closer look reveals arms embracing a world of new ideas, new directions, and each other.
