Welcome

Greetings from

Devender Sandhu Chair, Vaughan Public Library Board

Welcome to What’sOn at the Library Of the Fortune 500 CEOs who were asked what they think the global economy will be like in the next 12 months, 48% believe it will be better and 43% think it will be the same (20181.). With that in mind, I am delighted to share that Vaughan Public Libraries (VPL) delivers approximately $315 of economic impact for every citizen, for a total impact of over $103 million in the City of Vaughan! Thereby, excitement fills the air with the opening of our tenth location, Vellore Village Library, suggesting year after year of organic growth in our wonderful City of Vaughan. Be sure to visit this 8,300 sq. ft. hourglass-shaped facility with its nature-inspired elements, quiet study spaces, comfortable seating and outdoor balcony. Please join us for the official Grand Opening Celebration on Saturday, September 22. With food, storytimes and special performances, it will be a fun day for all! Construction of the library and storefront location at the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre continues to steadily progress and they are anticipated to open in 2019. Bathurst Clark Resource Library’s renovations are also moving along well. Soon you and your family will enjoy plenty of comfy new chairs, a laptop dispensing kiosk, an expanded study space, new carpeting and much more. Stay up-to-date with the

details of new builds, renovations and more on our building blog, www.vaughanpl.info/building/ Special thanks to all who participated in VPL's Maple Library Focus Groups; you have really shown how much you love your library! With supportive statistical analysis and your positive customer feedback, it was approved by the Library Board that Maple Library will be kept open and continue to operate as a key component of the Maple Community Centre. We are so appreciative of your support and patronage. If you want to show how much you love VPL in another way, enter our Love VPL Staff contest in October by taking a picture with one or more members of VPL staff or write a thank you note and submit it during Canadian Library Month. Please see details on page five. This autumn, we continue to offer a rich variety of programming including tech programs, book clubs for all ages and so much more. Relive Terry Fox’s heroic Marathon of Hope with a unique exhibit marking the 38th anniversary of his cross-Canada run (p. 5). Other interesting programs you might consider include Advanced 3D Modelling II (p. 6), teen and tween programs like Robotics Club and Spa Science (p. 11), Hot Topics (p. 13) and another of our popular family evening programs, Family Night: Game On! (back cover). So much is continuously happening at VPL. Investing in VPL results in a return on investment of 457% for the City of Vaughan. VPL truly supports the City of Vaughan's philosophy that no person is left behind. This What’sOn is full of programs and events for the fall that will enrich, inspire, and transform your life! 1. 2018, June 1. Analytics, Fortune, vol. 177, issue 6, pp. 17.
