Welcome Greetings from

Devender Sandhu Chair, Vaughan Public Library Board

Welcome to What’sOn at the Library Welcome to the spring of the sesquicentennial anniversary of our beloved country— as Canada turns 150! On July 1, 1867, the new Dominion of Canada was formed and over the years, what a land we have developed. It’s time to celebrate together all that is unique to this country—our culture, our diversity, our Canadian pride. Be sure to join us throughout the year for our special Canada 150 events and initiatives. There are so many reasons to celebrate this year! In addition to a new look for the website, and all the other great news you can read about in this issue, VPL will be extending the hours at Bathurst Clark, Civic Centre and Pierre Berton Resource Libraries starting March 6 when they begin opening at 9 a.m. seven days a week for your convenience. We are also expanding our offerings of French programming with the Kids’ French Book Club and French Movies with English subtitles so the whole family can enjoy them. During March Break, there’s even a Magic Show and a Magic Workshop being offered in French, so come out and passez un moment fantastique avec nous!

What’s New most celebrating Canadian literature and Bike into Spring (p. 10). There’s a lot to do with the entire family! Watch for VPL’s Canada 150 web page, currently being developed. It will allow you to share, in 150 words or less, which Canadian book, movie or song has impacted you the most. Copies of Colossal Canada are also being given out to commemorate our amazing country. Celebrations will continue into late 2017 as we close the year with the opening of the upcoming Vellore Village South Library. As you can see in the photo, the Mayor, Members of Council and the Library Board recently broke ground on the 8,300 sq. ft., hourglass-shaped facility. Be sure to stay up to date with the details on our building blog, www.vaughanpl.info/building. In this issue of What’sOn, to commemorate Canada’s special anniversary, a Canada 150 logo has been added throughout to denote Canadian authors and literature—be sure to check them out and relish in the taste of Canadian culture and heritage. With the magic of Canada’s 150 birthday this year, enjoy looking through this issue of What’sOn and let VPL Enrich, Inspire and Transform you and your family’s life—past, present and future! th

Speaking of March Break, VPL is your March Break Headquarters, offering over 40 programs at various branches March 11–17 including in the Create It! and Make It! spaces. If you are looking for something to do after the Break, check out VPL’s Special Author Events (p. 7) with
