Welcome Greetings from

Devender Sandhu Chair, Vaughan Public Library Board

Welcome to What’sOn at the Library Oh Canada, what a wonderful time it is to live in this great country! The sesquicentennial anniversary year of our beloved homeland is rolling out in full force. I do recommend reading Charlotte Gray’s The Promise of Canada, 150 Years-People and Ideas that have Shaped Our Country as a refreshing historical book on Canada, and The Idea of Canada: Letters to a Nation by David Johnston, our present Governor General, which features a series of 50 letters he penned to people he has admired and befriended, including novel thoughts about Canada. Also consider getting directly involved in Canada 150 activities as a volunteer, organizer or participant (canada. pch.gc.ca/eng/1469021027252 or www.vaughan.ca/projects/ community/canada150). At Vaughan Public Libraries (VPL) we are delighted to commemorate Canada’s special anniversary by offering various programs and activities to celebrate Canada 150. Children, 7–11 years, can produce a movie expressing their love for their county and have it submitted to the Here’s My Canada film contest during the What Does Canada Mean to You? program (p. 10). Families and individuals can create a free account at explore150.tigweb.org and get involved in VPL's Adventure Challenge (p. 11).

What’s New If writing is more your style of activity, submit a story about Canada and be considered for our book, Voices of Vaughan: a Canada 150 Anthology (p. 16). Looking for more ways to enjoy Canadian culture and heritage? The Canada 150 logo throughout What’s On denotes Canadian authors and literature.

For more activities and details, visit www.vaughanpl.info/canada150

For those interested in astronomy, safely observe a solar eclipse from the Civic Centre Resource Library patio (p. 10).

A captivating exhibit from the Anne Frank House in the Netherlands is available for viewing during the library’s open hours. Guided tours, self-guided tours and group bookings are available by contacting the Service Desk. Jul 3–Aug 31 · Dufferin Clark Library · 1441 Clark Ave W

With the warmer weather, construction on VPL’s tenth branch, the Vellore Village South Library, is steadily progressing. Visit our building blog for all of the details at www.vaughanpl.info/building. The June groundbreaking for an additional new library branch which will be located at the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre (VMC) is another exciting development. Not only will the VMC have a library of approximately 10,000 sq. ft. on the second floor, VPL will have an additional 332 sq. ft. space offering a storefront library on the first floor by the main entrance which will be open to you 24/7 with your library card.
