Welcome Greetings from

Devender Sandhu Chair, Vaughan Public Library Board

Welcome to What’sOn at the Library Vaughan Public Libraries (VPL) offers welcoming destinations that educate, excite and empower our community by helping us in opening our minds to millions of possibilities and viewpoints in our life. Acclaimed writer Virginia Woolf wrote in her book, A Room of One’s Own, “There is no gate, no lock, no bolt that you set upon the freedom of my mind”. Spring is the time of beginnings, and with new programs, services and libraries, VPL has a lot to offer! I am excited to announce VPL’s first full-day March Break Camp (p. 5) with before and after care for ages 7-12! While VPL is still your March Break Headquarters for the entire family, offering over 40 free programs at various branches March 12-16, March Break Camp is an exciting and fun way for your child to enjoy that week. Construction is steadily progressing on both of the new libraries at the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre (VMC) and the Vellore Village Community Centre (VVCC). The Vaughan Public Library Board is proud to announce the official name of the 8,300-sq. ft. library on Villa Royale

Avenue as the Vellore Village Library. Signs are also up announcing another library which will be built with a new community centre and park in the Carrville area. Other news includes the Civic Centre Resource Library (CCRL) winning the 2017 Ontario Public Works Association (OPWA) Project of the Year Award and that Bathurst Clark Resource Library will undergo a significant refurbishment this year that will include a new separate children’s area and LEARN IT! lab, increased study seats, a new universal washroom and renovated public washrooms. Be sure to stay up to date with the details of the new builds and renovations on our building blog, www.vaughanpl.info/building/ It’s also the perfect season to learn something new or enjoy time with others. Children can get involved in STEAM Club (p. 7), offered at Maple Library and Bathurst Clark Resource Library, with activities such as creating Mondrian-inspired art structures and exploring left and right handedness. Check out Bathurst Clark Resource Library’s Rigamajig, a large-scale building kit for children to let their imaginations soar. Be sure to schedule in some VPL fun for everyone in your family, with new programs like Headshots for New Professionals (p. 7), After School Hub (p. 9), Walk and Talk (p.13) and Family Night Make It! Together (back cover). With the newness of spring and all that it brings, enjoy looking through this issue of What’sOn and let VPL enrich, inspire, and transform you and your family’s life!
