Add to the mix they produced the new single, Gone, by Divine Brown and you can see why we love them. Small and medium-size businesses in York Region could benefit from new federal funding. The $20-million fund for southern Ontario will be split, with $12 million for the west and $8 million for the east.
The funds will be delivered by southern Ontario’s two regional Community Futures Development Corporation networks. During the project’s first two years, the networks will provide business loans of between $150,000 to
$500,000 each to accelerate the growth of an estimated 80 small and medium-sized businesses, which will help create or maintain more than 700 full-time jobs. For more information, call 1-866-593-5505.

Ontario fire marshall investigation under way By Jeremy Grimaldi
jgrimaldi@yrmg.com
Residents of this Maple condo apartment may not be allowed back home until the damage caused by fire is repaired, which could take up to a year.
Concetta Bucco is one of the original owners at 9944 Keele St., a condominium complex inhabited largely by seniors. In the seven years since the 82 year old moved in, residents have been forced out of their homes twice due to fires that ravaged the building. In the 2009 blaze, which crews believe was started by a cigarette butt, some residents were left languishing in hotels and with family members for almost two years as the $1.5 million in damages were repaired. Many only just moved back into the Maple condo building in 2010. On Tuesday night at about 10 p.m., fire once again ripped through the roof and attic of the 31-unit building causing an estimated $3 million in damage, devastating the entire third floor and severely damaging most of the other units with either water or smoke. “It’s mind-boggling, the damage is horrendous. I would say it’s 10 times as bad as last time,” said Nelda Lombardi, one of Ms Bucco’s neighbours. As part of the fire fight, 70 people had to be evacuated from the three-floor building and 32 firefighters battled the blaze for almost two hours, with certain suffering from heat exhaustion. Fire crews once again suspect a cigarette butt to be the cause, although that has not yet been confirmed. Early on Wednesday morning, residents were told to expect another year out of their homes, as workers repair the building and entirely rebuild the third floor. Although some managed to stay with relatives on Tuesday night, 18 others had to stay in the Super 8 Motel. That included second-floor resident Fernanda Janicas and her children, Vivian, 22 and Bryan Bryan, 16. “I heard noise and things falling and then the alarm went off,” said Bryan. “There was lots of yelling when we got in the hallway and it was full of smoke. When we went outside there was lots of fire, it was like a movie, it was crazy.” He added that the family have no idea where to go now because the closest friends and family reside at least an hour away from Vaughan.
Extensive damage can be seen in this bedroom at the Maple condo. Mike Di Stefano, 27, whose patio the fire started on, said he was told it began in a potted plant. “We grabbed every extinguisher and we got much of it out on the patio, but I guess it had already got into the roof.” Meanwhile, Vaughan fire chief Greg Senay said the only things that stopped the whole building from burning to the ground was good decisions by Vaughan Fire and Rescue Service’s commanding officers and a fire wall at the rear of the building. “This was a hard-slogging fire fight because it was in the attic, they are always the toughest,” he said. “I am really impressed with what they (crews) did elevating this to a 2nd and then 3rd alarm fire right away.” He added elevating the seriousness of the fire was a “good command decision” and was vital because it allowed the service to access plenty of firefighters and equipment quickly. The Ontario fire marshall was expected to attend and launch an investigation on Wednesday.

shining example of student achievement
SUBMITTED PHOTO
Anthony Scaramuzzo, 17, was recently awarded the City of Vaughan academic achievement and proficiency award. Anthony also completed Grade 12 with honors (83 per cent) and he is an Ontario Scholar. The Ontario Scholar award is bestowed to students who achieve greater than 80 per cent for more than six courses in the school year. The award was presented by Maple/Kleinburg Councillor Marilyn Iafrate. In the above photo, St. Joan of Arc principal Antonella Rubino congratulates Anthony as she presents him with the
award. The greatest achievement Anthony has earned was his ability to turn his high school co-op placement in the technology department at Vaughan City Hall into a full-time summer job. Anthony was also hard at work at an early age to train as a certified lifeguard and swim instructor. Utilizing his swimming skills, he has also taken to supporting the community by being a watchful eye while he works at the Maple Community Centre indoor swimming program.

A Vaughan man has been charged after a 19-year-old female complained to police that she had been subjected to an indecent act during her driving lesson. Police launched an investigation on July 8 soon after the girl complained about the alleged incident. The probe revealed the suspect has been employed by two separate driving schools within the GTA.
On July 9, the suspect was arrested and charged with mischief under $5,000 and an indecent act. Investigators believe there may be more victims who have received driving instruction from the suspect that have not come forward and are urging anyone with information to call police. The 41 year old has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Newmarket on Aug. 8. Anyone with information is

Exploratory business trip to Israel ‘extremely fruitful’ BY ADAM MARTIN-ROBBINS

An exploratory business trip to Israel proved “extremely fruitful,” according to the three city representatives who took part. Director of economic development Tim Simmonds, Woodbridge West Councillor Tony Carella and Thornhill Councillor Alan

Shefman visited the booming Middle Eastern nation from July 2 to 9. “I think, from an overall perspective, the exploratory mission was incredibly successful, but it’s now when the work begins,” Mr. Simmonds said. “It has given me enough insight to now put together a business plan request to council to start to grow this.”

The trio attended the CleanTech 2012 Exhibition in Tel Aviv and also met with a number of private companies as well as a slew of government officials including Paul Hunt, Canada’s ambassador to Israel, and Yoel Lavi Mayor of Vaughan’s “friendship city” Ramla. “We brought back a lot of stuff and a lot of leads to pursue,” Mr. Carella said. “I think the critical thing was, instead of seeing advancing trade as a three or four or five-step process, I think we managed to come to an understanding that it might look like three, but it’s really 30. Every step is incremental. There’s no grand opportunity that’s just waiting there to be seized full-blown. You really build on this.” During the trip, the three men met with representatives of MATIMOP — Israel’s industry and trade office — who are currently working with the governments of Canada and Ontario on a joint research and development funding program for Israeli and Canadian companies. “They want to bring a large workshop, knowledge-based event to the GTA, we immediately put Vaughan on the map for that,” Mr. Simmonds said. The mayor of Ramla has also contacted the city since the trio’s return to inform them of a group that is interested in importing certain brands of vehicles purchased from Vaughan dealers. Both of those opportunities came out of face-to-face meetings, Mr. Simmonds said. “From a business perspective those are two things we never expected to come back with,”
he said. “We found the face-to-face network time absolutely incredible and important in this whole process.” Those meetings also provided a lot of insight into the mindset of Israeli business people, who have a strong “entrepreneurial spirit,” Mr. Shefman said. “This was really to find out what the lay of the land is,” he said. “We think we have certain attributes here, that are of interest if you like, but we knew, even with our research, very little about the business environment, innovation environment, the tech environment of Israel.” The group went in to the trip with the aim of learning what interest, if any, Israeli businesses have in exporting products as well as to gain a sense of “their perceptions of Canada as a place to do business” and to gain a better understanding of the process involved in doing business between Canada and Israel, Mr. Shefman said. “Every one of those issues we were at least given insight into them and getting some pretty interesting answers to those questions,” he said. Mr. Shefman said there appears to be a lot of potential to develop connections between Vaughan’s construction industry and some of the innovative, “green technology” firms in Israel. “Israel is booming. I think there is great potential for that industry (construction) in Israel today,” he said. “If we can make those connections for our businesses that’s fabuSee $15K, page 24.

Seniors ‘shocked’ by appeal By Jeremy Grimaldi
jgrimaldi@yrmg.com
Two Vaughan senior citizens and their daughter reacted with “shock and worry” yesterday after learning their insurance firm will appeal a judge’s decision in the homeowners’ favour, despite almost a decade in court. After 12 years and three lawyers, Salvatore Brandiferri, 72, and wife Linda, 68, thought they could move on from a garage fire that has engulfed their lives when a judge ordered their insurers to pay up. Now, the Brandiferri’s daugher, Pina Naccarato, said she was left speechless when she found out that Wawanesa Mutual Insurance Company wants to go back to court to appeal the decision to award her parents $100,000 in punitive damages. “I am literally in shock right now,” said Ms Nacaratto. “I just feel so bad for my mom and dad. You really can’t imagine what we have been through with this case. It’s been 12 years and now we are starting right back up again. My dad was optimistic and was just hoping it would come to an end. He’s really worried.” The saga began after a fire, which originated in the central vacuum system, caused considerable damage to the couple’s home in 2000. Although Wawanesa paid out $479,000,
the couple launched a lawsuit because they believed the damage was far greater. Wawanesa then counter-claimed for $600,000, a suit that was dropped before the trial came about. It was a tactic the couple’s lawyer later called a “scorched earth” policy. The family was finally awarded the money to fix their home, plus some extra to cover rent they paid out for almost five years while living away from their smoky, leaky and mouldy Woodbridge home, they said. The couple’s lawyer, Jason Singer of Singer, Kwinter, said the Brandiferris may have to wait another year and a half to reach a resolution, potentially bringing the total amount of time between the fire and the settlement to 13-1/2 years. “It’s not surprising. Insurers often do appeal, but I think the judge’s reasons were well supported and will stand up on appeal,” Mr. Singer said. “I would like to see this saga end and get the couple the money the judge believes is due to them.” The couple’s home still remains in considerable disrepair. “There is no further response at this time,” said Melody Azuran, Wawanesa marketing coordinator and ombudsman liaison. Wawanesa’s 2011 profits are about $108 million, according to its website.

$15K trip to help city step up its game
This message brought to you as a community service of The Vaughan Citizen
From page 16.
lous.” The budget for the trip was approximately $15,000 or $5,000 each. And Mr. Shefman said it was worth every penny. “It’s absolutely crystal clear to me that you need to invest dollars to be a player in international economic development, that’s No. 1,” he said. “The dollars are clearly an investment, that’s No. 2. I can see that ultimately, over time, that there will be an enormous, fabulous pay back to our city by investing in international development.” In fact, Mr. Shefman said the trip opened his eyes to the fact that if Vaughan wants to be a player on the international business stage, it has to step up its game. “I think we need to invest and I can tell you that I’m surely going to urge my colleagues that we need to invest more than we are spending (on economic development) and I’m not talking trips,” he said. He’d like to see more money invested in hiring economic development staff. “Probably, one of the strongest messages I got out of this was that if you really want to develop economic ties internationally, and I imagine other countries are similar, you’ve got to be very serious,” he said. “You’ve got to make a commitment to do it and you’ve got to have a very clear plan of how you’re going to go about doing it. ... You can’t dabble because the competition is just overwhelming.” Mr. Shefman said he plans to host a workshop at city hall for interested members of the Israeli-Canadian business community in the GTA to discuss what he learned and explore future opportunities. In addition to learning a lot about the Israeli business community and potential economic opportunities, Mr. Carella also picked up some information about a “very successful” program for teens in Ramla that may prove fruitful in Vaughan, which he plans on discussing with the head of the city’s recreation department. Mr. Simmonds, meanwhile, will be developing a plan that builds on the information they gathered and the groundwork that was laid during the trip in the coming months. “There’s a lot of meat on the bone to go back and create that business plan to strategize on how we grow the Israeli relationship,” he said. Mr. Simmonds noted Vaughan has a number of advantages it can emphasize in its bid to prove attractive to Israeli businesses. “One of the most important factors for Israelis business to do business in North America is what is the Israeli community like? And we have one of the largest, most supportive ex-pat Israeli, Jewish communities in North America right here in Vaughan,” Mr. Simmonds said. Vaughan can also promote the fact that it is ideally situated along three 400 series highways and is home to two massive railroad hubs with reach into the United States and across Canada. “We want to make the city known as the logical entry and exit point,” he said.

Vaughan Stars Diving Club seeks out new members By Michael Hayakawa
mhayakawa@yrmg.com
The Vaughan Stars Diving Club feels it is one of the best kept secrets in the area. But that’s something they’d like to change. Since summer 2009, the club has seen its membership ebb and flow at the Woodbridge Arena pool where practices are held. “Our highest membership included 15 divers who compete at the junior provincial and national levels as well as 20 Learn To Dive members,” Stars head coach Joel Madden said. About half of its current membership comes from Vaughan and includes individuals from six to 60. Mr. Madden said the club has tried to expand its operating base by utilizing other pool facilities in the area. But the best response they’ve received to date has been at their current facility. That’s primarily because the facility has two diving boards of one and three metres and a training trampoline. However, the existing three-metre board doesn’t actually measure that distance. “Since the pool was renovated years ago, the board is actually 280 centimetres above the water surface. “That is not ideal, but it’s usable,” he said in trying to accentuate the positive. Not helping matters, Madden noted that there are few pools in the area that still have diving boards. “Many new pools that are being built are

your online source for FREE online coupons without diving boards,” he pointed out. Another uphill battle the Stars face is that ® their home base pool isn’t utilized as much as the newer ones in the area. As a result, there’s less people traffic or anyone using the pool are already in the competitive swimming clubs that currently uses the pool, too. “Having a presence at the other area pools would greatly help the region know about diving and the Stars Diving Club,” Madden suggested. Quite p Q possibly In trying to improve what resources they t best the currently have at their disposal, the club pizza ever! applied for and received Trillium funding. The money the club received was well T it NOW! Try spent to secure a head coach along with purchasing their trampoline and training mats. The club has reaped those rewards. “This has allowed us to become a competitive team in the first year,” Madden said. “Actually, we had qualified two divers for the junior national championships. And since then we have always had a presence at the provincial and national levels of the sport.” With the 2012 Summer Olympics playing host to competitive diving, Madden is optimistic that will fuel added interest for the club. Madden noted Olympic years combined with the media attention tends to heighten interest in the sports that take place. congrats, battlecats! Two U12 players from the Vaughan Soccer Club, who play for the Vaughan Battlecats, tried out for the The Danone Nations Cup Team and made it. Out of 5,000 players that took part in the Danone camps across the country, it was narrowed down to 140. From there, it was cut down to 12 for the Eastern team and 12 for the Western team. The Eastern team consisted of two Battlecats from Vaughan, Julian Manno (right) and Steffen Yeates (left). The team is extremely happy for the two players and wish them all the best. In addition, on July 14 at the BMO field, the Eastern team played the Western team. The Eastern team won 4-0 and will go to Poland to represent Canada in an international tournament sponsored by Danone.

Street Dance 2: Blu Ray review By David Budo
When you watch a movie about dance, how high do you set your expectations? Given the recent history of the genre, expectations are deservedly set at rock bottom. Street Dance 2 serves only to continue this horrible trend, while hitting the right notes when it came to, yes, you got it, the dancing. In this sequel, a humiliated street dancer has to venture across Europe to put together the best crew in order to win the world dance battle and redeem himself. The performances and script are just hard to sit through.
There are some adequate moments, but they are few and far between. As an actor, the only person worth their paycheque is British comedy legend, Tom Conti (The Dark Knight Rises, Derailed). While his French accent left something to be desired, his performance gave realism to the otherwise predictable dialogue. On a positive note, the dancing in this movie will make you want to get up and jam. What the dancers lack in acting ability, they make up for with their tremendous dance experience. The movie features break
4
¢
dancing, popping, locking, Latin dancing and, most intriguing, all of them mixed together for a Street-Latin fusion. The entire movie was shot in 3D, which keeps the dancing the focal point of every dance scene. The Blu Ray + DVD combo pack includes only the beautifully shot feature with its excellent audio track. Bottom Line: If you’re a fan of the movie or street dancing, you’ll have fun with this movie. Otherwise, keep your distance. David Budo is the movie critic for The Citizen. His blog, Budo’s Bottom Line is at yorkregion.com.

Other than personnel, not much has changed at Cook’s Bee Supplies since it was established on Aurora’s Edward Street in 1923. The original building exists, albeit with an addition. Former owner Jim Cook, whose father and grandfather were in the bee business, lives across the street in the house where he was born. The retired senior still drops by the shop to see how the new guys are doing. The public, business end of the shop is small. A wooden counter supports a phone and computer, the only hints of 21st-century technology. A plush toy bee hangs from the ceiling, turning silently in the heat. An antique rope-coiled skep (a beehive-shaped structure once used to house colonies) shares the shelves with bee motif collectables and the tools of the beekeeping trade — apiary starter kits, hats and protective netting, stainless steel collection vats, devices to emit smoke, honeycomb frames, industry magazines and how-to books. Cook’s is now owned by two Rons — Burrell and Ryan. Friends, beekeeping hobbyists and partners in the niche market supply enterprise, the men have long shared a fascination and respect for the indefatigable bee and its unher-
alded place in the food chain. “From the first time you uncover a bee hive, you realize theirs is an entire civilization on its own,” Mr. Burrell said. “They’re a wild swarm and they’ve built the combs perfectly and by themselves.” Their admiration for the creatures is immense. Honey bees are the main insects that make food for humans, they said. Flowering plants rely on pollinators, such as bees, for reproduction. Without bees, there would be dangerously low fruit and vegetable harvests. Bees have been around for some 30 million years, largely unchanged, blindly dedicated to their queen and colony, working themselves to death. East Gwillimbury’s Mr. Burrell and Toronto’s Mr. Ryan, decided to transform their hobby into a profession in 1994. Out of work, Mr. Burrell heeded his accountant’s advice and opted to take over Cook’s with Mr. Ryan. “We kept bees on the farm as a hobby and that kept us in touch with the community,” the droll 70-something, with a shock of luxuriant white hair said. “The business is a good fit.” The enterprise draws customers from all walks of life and corners of the GTA, Mr. Burrell said. It serves hobbyists, sideliners and people who love native bees and the honey, wax and royal jelly they produce. Commercial operations

with thousands of hives and millions of bees buy their gear in bulk elsewhere. The two Rons sell equipment and can source queen bees, drones, workers and “nucs” — the nucleus of a beehive where cells contain eggs that become the brood. The men dispense advice on how to counter recent problems, including colonies faltering due to pesticides, disease and mites. Of course, the shop also sells honey and coloured wax for candle craft. If you’re keen on keeping a bee colony, you have to ensure bylaws are observed. Most urban areas ban beekeeping due to liability. Once established with a starter package, nucleus and protective gear, you can farm the flying critters for about $500. “The biggest mistake people make is giving all the honey away,” Mr. Burrell said with a chortle. “Then they complain how expensive it is.” Mr. Ryan has been a bee devotee “since before Kennedy was assassinated”, he said, placing his passion to the early 1960s. He admires bees’ work ethic and loyalty and their colonies’ hierarchy.

“I like their intelligence,” he said. “Beekeeping is a tremendously fascinating experience.” While there are different species, there are three kinds of bees in a hive: queen, worker and drone, the men explained. Only the queen lays eggs, approximately 1,500 a day. She communicates with her hive with her own special scent, called pheromones. The worker bees are female and perform all the tasks in the hive, including cleaning, feeding babies and the queen, packing pollen and nectar into cells, building and repairing honeycombs, guarding and fanning to cool the hive. The workers also gather nectar and pollen from flowers. They’re also the only bees with stingers. The stingerless male bees are drones. While it doesn’t seem fair, their sole job is mating. Bee society balances the scales, the men said. In winter, to ensure survival, the workers execute many of the drones. People need to be vigilant when bees are present. If a hive loses a queen, the bees become distressed. If their space is threatened, they will defend. Mr. Burrell knows the ire of an angry swarm. He recalled a warm August day when he went to clean a hive. “All of a sudden, they were over me like Jack the Bear,” he recalled. Stung often, the bee’s venom
BEE FACTS 4Bees have two stomachs — one stomach for eating and the other for storing nectar collected from flowers or water so that they can carry it back to their hive. 4If a worker bee uses her stinger, she will die. 4Bees are classified as insects and they have six legs. 4Bees have five eyes — two compound eyes and three tiny ocelli eyes.

poisoned him. He suffered anaphylaxis, a severe, whole-body allergic reaction. He was rushed to the hospital. “About five kilometers down the road, I saw the light,” he said. “It was close.” He survived and has no ill will against the insects, just a heightened respect for the strength of their numbers. The men toil six days a week and worry about the bee supply industry. “As the older guys retire, fewer young folks are taking it up,” Mr. Burrell said.

It is with profound sadness that family and friends part with Russell Charles Urquhart B.Ed, M.Ed. from cancer at Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital on Monday, July 23, 2012. Russell is now in the arms of his beloved wife Lucille Reta Urquhart (nee Harvey), who passed away five years ago. Also known as 'Bud', he is brother to Louis, Glen, Hazel and Ivan Urquhart. Left to mourn this independent, humorous, hard-working and protective father, are his children: Roderick Urquhart (Aase), Adrienne Urquhart, Tracy Campbell (Richard) and beloved granddaughters Taryn and Marley Campbell. Russ, a retired public school principal with York County Board of Education, was very active right until his last days. Having served in the Royal Canadian Corps. of Signals, he joined the 16th AAOR and was stationed in both England and Europe during the Second World War. A voracious reader, having read many books about the war, he regaled all around with his spirited storytelling. The family would like to thank the caring staff of CCAC, Mackenzie Health and Veterans Affairs Canada. An informal Celebration of Life for his family to receive friends and relatives will be held Wednesday, August 1st from 2-4 p.m. at The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 385, 105 Industrial Pkwy N. in Aurora, ON. Please visit www.marshallfuneralhome.com for further information or to leave a message of condolence. Donations may be made to The Royal Canadian Legion at www.on.legion.ca/charity/donations.asp.
