The McMichael Canadian Art Collection is joining in the Queen’s 60th anniversary celebrations. The Kleinburg gallery is launching a special project — dubbed Queen Elizabeth, A Diamond Jubilee Celebration — Sept. 29. The all-ages project will feature family programming, educational displays, presentations and discussion panels. The aim is to celebrate and explore the past as well as the contemporary relevance of the monarchy to various communities in Canada. The McMichael gallery is receiving a financial boost from the federal government, which last week announced it was committing funding of $16,295 toward the project. “Our government was given a strong mandate to support and celebrate important Canadian milestones, such as the Diamond Jubilee,” said Vaughan MP and

Minister of International Cooperation Julian Fantino said in a news release. “This is a rare opportunity for Canadians, especially our youth and new Canadians, to take part in celebrations in their community that mark this historic and significant anniversary.” The project will run until Dec. 9 at the gallery, located at 10365 Islington Ave. For more information, visit www. mcmichael.com.

Box Tiger battles it out at Montreal music fest Vaughan indie band The Box Tiger needs your help. The winning band will play two sets during the festival, which runs from September 19 to 23. Band members will receive artist passes, roundtrip airfare and four-star hotel accommodations for three nights. At press time Tuesday, The Box Tiger sat in 23rd spot. Top skateboarders, amateurs compete at 2-day event BY JEREMY GRIMALDI

jgrimaldi@yrmg.com

Skateboarders are famous for their gnarly lingo, crooked grinds to noseslides and mctwists. All these moves and more will be on show at Canada’s Wonderland when some of the best boarders in the world congregate at the theme park for another slickly named event: West 49 Take the Cake. The cake, of course, refers to the $50,000 in prize money up for grabs during the Aug. 30 and 31 event at the Kingswood Music Theatre. Competing alongside the 40 amateurs from across Canada will be 40 professionals, including the biggest names in the world outside of Tony Hawk, that include Chris Cole, Sierra Fellers, Torey Pudwill, Brian Sheckler, Ryan Decenzo, Nyjah Huston and Paul Macnau. According to organizer Andrew Singleton, the skate park’s features will include handrails, ledges, gaps and stairs.

On Aug. 31, the best two or three amateurs will skate alongside the professionals for a winner-takeall event that is expected to draw 10,000 people, making it the single largest skate event in Canada. “These guys have fully reached celebrity status in the (United) States. Nyjah Huston is earning more than $1 million from skating, Ryan Shackler has his own MTV show and Ryan Decenzo won X Games last year,” said Mr. Singleton. “These guys are coming to Canada because this is Canada’s big deal.” However, he added that, comparatively speaking, the event is rather small in terms of prize money. In the U.S., prizes reach $1.5 million. A one-day ticket costs $34.99 and a two-day ticket runs $45.99. The event is free to guests once they are inside Canada’s Wonderland. Vaughan voters go to the polls for byelection Sept. 6 by Adam Martin-Robbins

amartinrobbins@yrmg.com

Vaughan voters head to the polls in less than month. Premier Dalton McGuinty announced byelections in Vaughan and Kitchener-Waterloo will be Sept. 6 during a tour of two kindergarten classrooms under construction at Maple’s Mackenzie Glen Public School this morning. And he vowed those contests won’t pull the government’s attention away from contract negotiations with teachers unions, which could become a key issue with some voters. “We’ve got to walk and chew gum at the same time and I’m confident we can do that,” Mr. McGuinty said. “We’ll campaign as hard as we can in the byelections and we’ll keep working with our STAFF PHOTO/STEVE SOMERVILLE teachers and with our school boards. Parents are not askOntario Premier Dalton McGuinty addresses media at Mackenzie Glen Public School in ing us to take a foot off the accelerator when it comes Vaughan Aug. 8. to making sure we’ve got everything in place so that we can warmly welcome over 120,000 people who work in our schools this September, as well as the ... two million kids.” The local byelection was sparked by the resignation of longtime Liberal MPP Greg Sorbara, less than a year after he was re-elected. While Mr. Sorbara won last fall’s general election by a wide margin, a new Forum poll puts the Liberals in a tight race with the Tories. That poll, taken by telephone late last week, shows 41 per cent of voters would choose the Progressive Conservatives, 40 per cent would vote Liberal and 15 per cent would vote NDP if the election was held now. “We remain very optimistic,” Mr. McGuinty said. “We acknowledge that it’s never an easy thing for governments to win byelections, but we’ll work as hard as we can. And I know we’ll get top quality

candidates coming forward. “I am confident we will get not only a good candidate, but somebody who will be proud of the record we’ve amassed over the past nine years in this community.” Hours later, the Liberal Party announced Steven Del Duca will be acclaimed as the Liberal candidate for Vaughan at a nomination meeting Aug. 12. Mr. Del Duca, a 39-yearold Liberal insider and longtime Vaughan resident, failed in his bid to capture the Woodbridge East seat in the 2010 municipal election. Neither the Progressive Conservatives nor the New Democratic Party have set dates for nomination meetings in Vaughan, but there are rumblings that several people, including failed Toronto mayoral candidate Rocco Rossi, are considering making a bid for the Tory nod. Mr. Rossi could not be reached for comment by press time. Although Mr. McGuinty’s popularity with Ontario voters has suffered recently, he had an approval rating of 32 per cent in Vaughan. New Democratic Party Leader Andrea Horwath’s approval is highest, at 33 per cent, and PC Leader Tim Hudak sits at 24 per cent. Forum, however, found local Tories are more likely to say they are “very enthusiastic” about voting for their party at 42 per cent as opposed to the Liberals at 39 per cent and the NDP at 37 per cent. Still, Mr. McGuinty is confident about his party’s chances of holding on to the local seat. If the Liberals win both byelections, the party would gain the majority it narrowly missed in last fall’s general election. The Liberals now hold 51 seats in the Legislature, excluding Speaker Dave Levac, versus a combined tally of 53 seats for the Pro-

gressive Conservatives and New Democrats. During today’s school tour, Mr. McGuinty reiterated if the remaining 400 school boards fail to reach contract agreements with the teachers unions that are in line with the province’s “road map,” agreed to by the Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association, he’ll enforce legislation to ensure classes are not disrupted. “We need to do three things in education: we need to protect the gains that we’ve made; we need to continue making progress and we need to enter into compensation agreements with our partners that reflect our fiscal reality,” he said. “The good news is we have a strong plan that will achieve these three objectives. ... We’re encouraging all our partners in education to follow his road map to success for our kids.” Nearly 400 school boards, including York Region boards, still need to strike deals with the teachers’ unions. The province should step back and allow bargaining to take place between the unions and school boards, Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario York Region chapter president David Clegg said. “The threats that the government makes will only destroy the goodwill of teachers. It already has, to a large degree, and you cannot legislate goodwill from Queen’s Park,” he said. Before departing from Mackenzie Glen Public School, where he chatted with construction workers building the two new classrooms and signed some of their hard hats, the premier scrawled a message on a flip chart in the main foyer. “Welcome students. You are going to have a great year. We are all very proud of you.” — with files from Torstar News Network

Men, take a page from Fifty Shades, learn lovely lesson By Vanessa saRraino

Contributor

It took me a great deal of time to decide whether or not I wanted to write this article. Months ago, my two good male buddies at the gym asked me if I’d heard of the book Fifty Shades of Grey. No, not at all. Thanks anyway, guys. They insisted I get it. I declined. I had no interest, not even after they told me what it was about. Still no desire to pursue. Then my sister-in-law explained her obsession with this book. She read all three books in the series, three times. Even my brother-in-law admitted his wife stays up until three or four in the morning, using a flashlight to read. But for me, yet again, no curiosity. Then one day, on my regular Costco visit, my daughter picked up a book and said nice and loud, “Hey mom, here is the book Zia keeps talking about. Do you want to get it?” “No, put it down sweetie.” Then a lady stopped me and said, “Oh, you should. In fact, your daughter shouldn’t even have it in her hand.” “Really?”

VANESSA SARRAINO “Oh yes”, she explained.” I can’t even read it without blushing.” I looked over at her husband, who looked bored to tears slumped over the buggy, then back at her and again replied, “Really? You both like it? I don’t get all the hoopla.” “Oh, you won’t regret it,” she said, almost embarrassed that she let out a huge secret. I looked at my husband, who, of course, flashed a why not smirk. Well, I took Fifty Shades home and began reading, with 15 minute interval interruptions from my husband to ask, “Anything yet?” I didn’t reply. I was in awe. That

woman at the store was right. I did read through it quickly, only to be enlightened, enthralled and excited about the fact that Mr. Christian Grey is a one-of-a-kind man. Why? Because he cares about the fact that his woman must eat well, exercise and have only fruits for snacks. Yes! A man who finally knows how to care for the health and wellbeing of a woman. Forget his red room, his titillating, naughty activities, romps, escapades, and his money. Anyone can do this or buy that, but how often do you find a man who truly cares about nourishing his woman. This, dear readers, comes deep from within. A genuine caring and compassion for the well-being of another person is truly difficult to find. This man wants his woman fed well, to exercise for strength (yes, an ulterior motive to suit his purposes and endurance, and sleep eight hours a night. That is exactly what every woman needs. How easy and simple is it. Christian Grey, you’ve got it all together. He wants Anna, the main female character in the book, to eat only

wholesome and nourishing foods that will support and give her energy. He makes this a rule. He even cooks for her and huddles over her when she eats, to ensure she takes in as much nourishment as possible. Each time Anna does not eat, he scowls and is overly concerned. He doesn’t want her to be too thin, but, rather, fit and full of vitality. There are moments in the book when he scolds her for not eating. Yes, this is perhaps a bit control-

ling, but how often do you hear a man reprimand his woman for not eating enough or not sleeping long enough? Christian also takes his yearning for Anna to a higher level when he wants to make sure she is dressed warmly and safe at home from any of her excursions. Her health and safety are of top priority for this tycoon. Men, take a page and learn a lovely, self-serving and other-serving lesson from this book. Make sure your woman is eating well, snacking well and sleeping well, and you just may see a whole new side of your partner, full of energy you never thought possible. And, oh yes, perhaps a new willingness, too, to be playful, ready and able. You may end up being eternally grateful in your real life for the wise words, strategies and philosophies of the fictitious Mr. Grey. Oh, yes, to my Mr. Grey, thankyou for my green juices. Jose Bautista is coming to Vaughan. The Toronto Blue Jays all-star outfielder will visit Vaughan Grove Sports Park for the inaugural Playstation Jose Bautista Baseball ProCamp Monday, Aug. 13 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. During his visit, Bautista will be on site to direct camp activities and provide instruction. He will be joined by a selection of the top prep and collegiate coaches

from the Greater Toronto Area. The camp is open to boys and girls ages six to 14 and focuses on the team concept and fundamentals of baseball. Groups will be small to ensure that each camper receives personalized instruction. Bautista will also give talks highlighting the finer points of the game of baseball and beyond. Each camper receives an autographed camp team photo with Bautista, exclusive camp T-shirt, goodie bag with free merchandise,

and the opportunity to win additional prizes. Dirk Drieberg, Vaugham Vikings Baseball Association president, said the camp is the first of its kind in Canada. In creating the camp, Drieberg said talks began in the spring when his name was referred to the organizers of ProCamp. From there, the organizers came to Vaughan and had discussions with Drieberg. “I gave them an education on how the youth baseball system is

set up in Canada and how it compares with that in the United States,” recalled Drieberg. “From there, we visited the facilities at Vaughan Grove and they loved it. “We’re excited that the organizers chose Vaughan. And for York Region too, it’s great that it’s in our backyard. The kids won’t have to travel to downtown Toronto or somewhere west of Toronto.” Drieberg and camp organizers hope that for a first-time venture they can attract close to 200 youngsters.

Drieberg is excited with the prospects of the camp. “We’re excited, and with Jose, (Bautista), who he is, it’s great that he’s doing this at the grassroots level.” As for the camp’s future, Drieberg hopes it will be an annual affair and continue to grow. The cost of the ProCamp is $99. Additional information and registration is available by visiting www.josebautistacamp. com or by calling 888-389-CAMP (2267).

lot of wives are getting ideas on how to spice up their marriages a little bit. I think it’s very important to keep relationships exciting.” She said although many of the new customers are a little shy at first, they become more relaxed and open up once they have been coaxed with a few questions about what they are looking for. “Almost every time they tell me they are reading Fifty Shades,” she added. Although many will have heard of the erotic novel, for the uninitiated, the books revolve around a relationship between college graduate Anastasia Steele and young business magnate Christian Grey. The second and third volumes by British author E.L. James, are titled Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed. As for how much the books have increased store revenue, Ms Dyer said from June to July, sales have jumped by 50 per cent, with many items being sold out entirely. At Newmarket’s Passion Place, the effect has possibly been even more extreme. Megan Dawson, who has been working at the Bayview Avenue shop for about a year,

said the book sold out in about a month and sales of items mentioned in the book skyrocketed between 300 to 400 per cent. “Fetish and bondage gear has gone way up,” she said. “The Ben Wa balls we can no longer keep in stock and we can’t get them from suppliers as they are on back order.” She, too, has witnessed whips, love masks and various other items of the more graphic variety fly out the door in the hands of women ranging in age between 20 and 60. “A lot of them are people that wouldn’t usually come in,” she added. “It’s a lot of housewives that have never experimented, but because of the books they are starting to. Usually, they start by saying, ‘I am reading Fifty Shades’ and often tell me that instead of once a week, they are now having sex two to three times a week.” She believes the books have helped countless people explore their sex lives and romantic relationships much more. “If it’s getting people more comfortable with their bodies and spicing up relationships, then I think it’s great,” she said. Professor Ellis Cashmore, an expert in culture at Staffordshire University, predicts a spike in the number of newborns in Britain next year as a result of the book. “With the millions of copies it has sold, it makes complete sense to assume that in nine months time we are going see a baby boom,” he said.

The old adage stands firm — sex sells. Adult, novelty and sex toy shops across York Region are reporting huge sales growth in all items related to the new literary sensation, Fifty Shades of Grey, the first in a trilogy that has obliterated sales records with 40 million copies already sold worldwide. In Britain, the book dubbed “mommy porn” has surpassed Harry Potter, with its 5.3 million books to become a top best-seller. In Vaughan, the salespeople at Love Shop, near Hwy. 7 and Kipling Avenue, said items featured in the books graphic and ubiquitous sex scenes have gone through the roof. Some of those items include Ben Wa balls, handcuffs and spankers and nipple clamps. “I have never seen anything like it,” said Jessica Dyer, who has been working at the shop for 1-1/2 years. “Books like this have simply not been read on this level before.” Ms Dyer, who has just started reading the book herself, said that over the past month and a half, plenty of men, but mostly middleaged, married women, have been flooding the store with requests for “fetish” items that range in price from $25 to $150. “All the people that come in here are just going crazy and raving about the book,” she added. “They keep saying they are not sleeping anymore because they are up all night reading these books. Recent shooting incidents in the Greater Toronto Area have drawn condemnation and shock. In the weeks since high profile incidents in Toronto, including one that left two dead and 23 wounded during a block party in Scarborough and the public slaying of a man at a Little Italy cafe, opinions on issues ranging from how to prevent gun violence to how to crack down on people who use guns in populated areas have been front and centre in the public consciousness. While York Region’s gun violence experience does not mirror that of Toronto, guns and people who carry and use them are on the radar of police and community leaders here. The province responded to the gun violence by promising permanent funding for the provincial anti-violence intervention strategy,

which aims to stamp out guns and gangs. In 2011, Ontario announced $1.4 million worth of PAVIS funding over two years for York Regional Police as part of $15 million in funding for police forces across the province. PAVIS is modelled on the Toronto anti-violence intervention strategy, launched in 2006 in the aftermath of the city’s so-called “year of the gun” in 2005. In York, police have typically approached the region’s guns and gang challenges differently than those in Toronto. The major focus here has been on crime prevention, rather than responding to gang issues. York Regional Police maintains there isn’t the same type of hardcore gang activity as is seen in other parts of Canada. Among other prevention initiatives, York police has put officers in the region’s schools and run pro-

grams for youths at its Community Safety Village in WhitchurchStouffville. It is all in the name of reaching young people before they are approached by people who would lead them down a twisted path of gun possession and involvement in gangs, York police Deputy Chief Bruce Herridge said. It’s easy to measure the number of arrests made every year or the number of handguns seized, but quantifying the number of young people discouraged from picking up a weapon and dealing drugs for some fast cash is a little harder, the deputy chief noted. However, that doesn’t mean York police goes soft on people with long histories of gang involvement, he stressed. While there are handguns in York Region — 70 have been seized by York police so far this year, according to the deputy chief — the vast majority of them are not used in criminal activity, he said. Gun violence, as seen in Toronto recently, will, from time to time, filter into York, he said, but York Regional Police is prepared to meet it head-on. See SERIOUS, page 17.

A 31-year-old Richmond Hill man was charged with murder. 4July 22, 2011 A York Region police officer and a suspect are shot during an apparent armed robbery at a strip mall in Aurora. The 40-year-old officer was shot after three armed men tried to rob a Bell store at Aurora Road and Hwy. 404. Both victims sustained non-life-threatening wounds. 4Nov. 1, 2011 A 20-year-old man is sent to hospital after a shooting at The Queensway and Metro Road South in Keswick. 4Jan. 22, 2012 A Toronto man, 38, is shot inside a Woodbridge cafe and hospitalized. 4Jan. 28, 2012 Paul Black, 44, of Markham is shot and killed in Richmond Hill. The incident may be linked to a Toronto homicide the day before when a 40-year-old woman died from gunshot wounds in a laneway behind Dufferin Mall.

Serious plan needed: premier From page 16.

In affirming the government’s support for the PAVIS/TAVIS program July 23, Premier Dalton McGuinty said Ontario families have the right to feel safe and be safe in all our communities. “We need a serious plan that includes strong policing and strong social supports,” he said. “We need to do both. We need that balance. And we all have a responsibility to make that happen.” Meanwhile, at the federal level, Senator Don Meredith argued urban gun violence can often be directly tied to poverty and a lack of jobs. “The community needs to feel engaged,” said Mr. Meredith, a pastor at the Pentecostal Praise Centre in Maple and a Richmond Hill resident. Youths are the most at risk for gang involvement, he said, and a discussion about gang activity needs to be held in York Region.

2 charged with pimping out teen girl York Regional Police have arrested two Toronto people accused of pimping out a teenaged girl. July 30, police learned a 16-yearold girl was working at the Blue Pearl Spa near Dufferin Street and Wilson Avenue in Toronto. Friday, police arrested a 43-yearold man as he left the spa. Following a raid on the spa, a 41-year-old woman was also arrested. They are charged with one count each of living off the avails of prostitution, procuring a person to become a prostitute and possession of proceeds of crime and two counts of possession of a controlled substance.

“It’s an occupation that has a short life expectancy,” he said of gang life. But the senator, an anti-crime advocate and co-founder of the GTA Faith Alliance, who has served on several police advisory and liaison committees, said the solutions aren’t as simple as putting more police on the streets. “We can put a million cops on the streets,” he said. “We can’t make someone act responsibly.” Communities can take a preventative lead on gun violence by building residentfriendly neighbourhoods, he said. “We need to begin urban people planning,” he said. Effectively dealing with gun violence is a complex proposition and will need to involve community pillars such as faith organizations, parental involvement, mentoring and affordable access to community programs, Mr. Meredith said. “It’s going to take all of us to do that.”

Region anticipates West Nile increase PROTECT YOURSELF

Confirmed pools in East Gwillimbury, Newmarket, King By Teresa Latchford

tlatchford@yrmg.com

York Region Public Health predicts more human cases of West Nile virus this year. The region has recorded an average of one confirmed case per year since 2007, but that figure is expected to increase significantly this year as more mosquito pools test positive for the virus. Nine infected pools have been confirmed across the region: four in East Gwillimbury, one each in Newmarket, King and Richmond Hill and two in Vaughan. This more than doubles the number of pools testing positive last year, York Region medical officer of health Dr. Karim Kurji said. “I wouldn’t just go by the areas the pools have been found in, as these mosquitoes will be all over the region,” he added. “Increased activity is an early warning for us to expect more human cases.” While no human cases have been confirmed this season, he said it is even more important for you to protect yourself from mosquito bites by using insect repellent, covering up and limiting outdoor activities during dusk and dawn, when the insects are most active. “People know what they should be doing, but aren’t doing it,” he said, adding people have let down their guard since West Nile cases have been declining since 2005, when

five were confirmed. One in five individuals bitten by a mosquito carrying the virus will develop symptoms and only one in 150 people will suffer serious consequences involving the brain. Symptoms of West Nile virus include fever, muscle weakness, stiff neck, confusion, severe headache and sudden sensitivity to light. When a positive pool is confirmed, the region visits daycare and long-term care facilities within a two-kilometre radius, checks the area for and treats stagnant water and ramps up education, Dr. Kurji said. The increase in mosquitoes this year is due to the hot and humid temperatures that create better breeding conditions. The region will continue to treat catch basins to prevent breeding while continuing to monitor the situation.

Residents leap to action after coyote kills pet By Jeremy Grimaldi

jgrimaldi@yrmg.com

Simon Marwood and the late toy poodle, Henri.

A pet owner whose wife helplessly witnessed a coyote carry the couple’s dog away from the family home has hit out at the difficulty he has faced trying to make the dangers of urban coyotes public knowledge. Simon Marwood, 41, has said politicians of all stripes, along with those in Vaughan, have done an insufficient job of warning residents and pet owners about the perils of coyotes, even after he spent hours trying to get them onside. The software company executive, who lives near Teston Road and Bathurst Street, said the original incident occurred in November when his wife accompanied the dog out the front door of his Woodland Acres home. Once outdoors, his wife, Karine, said she only turned around for moments to do something, but when she turned back she saw her beloved toy poodle, Henri, in the coyote’s mouth. Mr. Marwood was only made aware of the situation after hearing her screams and running outside, to find his wife inconsolable. Unfortunately, by that time the coyote and dog had vanished. After spending much of the following night and week in a fruitless search for his nine-year-old pet, he got to work to warn others of the dangers coyotes pose. “I have four close neighbours that have had encounters,” he said. “We have had a lady chased into the house with her small dog, another coyote had his jaw around another neighbour’s dog’s neck (black Labrador). He only let go when my neighbour threw a large rock at him. We are being told by the Ministry of Natural Resources to jingle our keys, make yourself look big and make lots of noise. Well, I’m sorry, but that doesn’t work anymore.” He added that he doesn’t believe the public generally has “any clue that a coyote could lunge up a driveway and steal a pet away”. “There’s no communication, no education and no plan,” he said. After sending out countless e-mails to the ministry, the Region of York, city hall, former MPP Greg Sorbara and MP Julian Fantino, he was contacted by Maple/Kleinburg Councillor Marilyn Iafrate. The city took about five months to get back to him, he said. When time came for his heavily researched council deputation, about seven months after the incident, staff said an educational website would be put into place to help residents and dog owners understand how to better deal with wild animals in urban settings. Despite assurances, Mr. Marwood has yet to see the site, let alone the raft of other measures he believes could have been developed, including signs in known trouble spots and brochures. The city declined to comment on when or if the site would go live. “How long does it take?” he questioned. “I am just not convinced a whole lot is coming out of this. These coyotes are still around. Just six weeks ago, my wife saw three of them in the street. In Aurora, when this problem came up, there was not only a public information session, but they created a coyote awareness section on their website. The point is, if we had of known any of this in Vaughan, Henri could still be alive because we simply wouldn’t have let him outside.”

‘I have four close neighbours that have had encounters,” he said. “We have had a lady chased into the house with her small dog, another coyote had his jaw around another neighbour’s dog’s neck (black Labrador). ...’ Simon Marwood

Mr. Marwood also took aim at neighbouring landowners, including Endbridge Gas Distribution and TransCanada Corp., whom he said ripped down a farmer’s fence and brush that acted as a buffer between their property and the Oak Ridges Moraine. But despite meeting with both parties, no fence has been erected. He added that some further measures the city could put into place include a $500 fine for anyone caught feeding the coyotes, forcing TransCanada to re-build the fence, erecting large fences itself, or hiring people to haze the animals so they no longer come into built-up areas, as they do in Denver, Colorado. As for the pain he and his wife still feel over the loss of Henri, he said it has been “absolute devastation” since he disappeared. “He wasn’t just a pet, he was another member of the family,” he said. “We’re still not over it, having it happen in that way, five feet away from you at night, is not something you ever expect. Within five seconds your life has changed.” When discussing the lack of action, his mood changes from grief to chagrin. “I have felt a range of frustration through to anger, not just at the city but at different levels of the government,” he added. Both TransCanada and Endbridge said they have met with Mr. Marwood and Endbridge said it will meet with him once again this week. However, TransCanada said although it is willing to pay a percentage of the cost of a new fence, Mr. Marwood never got back to them with a quote about how much that fence would be. Shawn Howard, a spokesperson for the company, added that he doesn’t believe fences work as wild animals will always find ways around, overtop or underneath them. Jolanta Kowalski, a ministry spokesperson, said the rules posted on its website stand and encouraged residents to educate themselves. As for coyote’s increasing aggressiveness, she blamed that on residents feeding the animals. “Believe it or not, there are people out there feeding them,” she said. “They get habituated and that’s when you get them unafraid as they should be, when they can’t get food that’s when you could get some aggressiveness.” She added the ministry has done two public sessions on coyotes in the last year, in Aurora and Oakville. The ministry believes its expert guidelines remain the best way to deal with coyotes, despite Mr. Marwood’s views. For more information visit www.mnr.gov.on.ca and search coyotes.

Shout Sister! Choir is starting a chapter in York Region. An information meeting will be held Sept. 5 at 7 p.m. at Stouffville United Church, 34 Church St. This chapter will be directed by stouffville native Cora Ryan Westermann. Shout Sister! Choir, which is non-reading and non-auditioning, was formed 10 years ago by vocalist Georgette Fry to increase members’ self confidence, while enjoying all the benefits that come along with the experience of singing together in a group. The choir has more than 700 members. with chapters in Belleville, Brockville, Durham, Haliburton, Kingston, Ottawa, Northumber-

land, Peterborough, Picton and Toronto. Public performance was not an original intention for the choirs, but demand has taken them to a number of venues. They have appeared on the Vinyl Café’s Christmas show in Kingston, for Stephen Lewis during his speaking tour and for Tom Jackson’s food bank tour. They have opened for the The Nylons and performed on Parliament Hill. They take their practices to area seniors’ facilities throughout the year. This is in addition to their annual charity fundraiser each spring, according to the Shout Sister! Choir web site. love how the Olympics remind us of how proud we are to be Canadian and how much we have in common. Our hearts burst with collective pride when York Region’s own Rosie MacLennan stepped up on to the top podium to lay claim to our nation’s first gold medal of the London Games. Fists pumped in unison when Olympic bronze medallist Derek Drouin claimed the title as our nation’s first high jump medallist since 1976. I literally heard the shared jubilation as shouts echoed from homes across my neighbourhood every time our women’s soccer team took the lead in the neck-in-neck game against the United States team Monday. And the crushing silence when they lost their bid for gold in a heart-breaking overtime loss. And we all bent our heads, first in consolation for dreams dashed,

Debora Kelly then lifted them high in admiration for Paula Findlay, who finished last in the women’s triathlon, battling the excruciating pain of a hip injury to cross the finish line. In typical Canadian fashion, her first words in the face of her own agonizing disappointment were an apology: “I just want to apologize. I’m really sorry to everybody, to Canada.” But in Canada, she is no less a

hero than our athletes who have achieved the incredible feat of winning a medal that ranks them among the best athletes in the world. She may even be more of an Olympic hero to some. In Canada, where our heritage is steeped in the hewing of wood and drawing of water, where the winters are long, cold and hard — I think so, anyway — and the coffee is from Tim Hortons, it’s all about grit and hard-scrabble determination; about giving your all. It’s about greatness, not only in achieving but in spirit; in believing in a dream, then striving to make it a reality no matter the odds. Those distracted by bright, shiny medals might say our Canadian Olympic spirit that values the competition — the act of trying your very best — more than the medals is simply sour grapes or a consolation prize for losers.

Kleinburg U12 boys need your help BY Michael Hayakawa

The Kleinburg Nobleton SC 2000 Lions under-12 boys’ soccer team could use a little local support. The Lions are one of the 15 finalists in the Bank of Montreal’s national grass roots youth soccer contest in being the BMO Team of the Week champion. For the Lions to attain their goal, they need to make people aware of their situation and require support through a voting procedure used to determine the winner. People can cast their vote

online daily from Aug. 13-27 by logging on to: www.BMO soccer.com The team came together five seasons ago through a love of soccer and ended up being a support system for each other. “We’re a family both on and off the field and we’re proud to represent Kleinberg as a BMO Team of the Week,” Gennaro Lombardi, Lions coach, said. “If we win the championship we will receive a $125,000 upgrade to our community soccer pitch, a team trip to see a Toronto FC, Montreal Impact, Vancouver

But most of us know medals are not what make a country great. (The exception being Parti Quebecois leader Pauline Marois, who reacted to the fact the first four of Canada’s medals were won by athletes from Quebec by pointing out an independent Quebec would shine on a world stage.) Sadly, there are those who think our international reputation — if not their own armchair podium validation — rests on our medal count. They like to write letters to the editors and post anonymous comments on websites every four years, when they jump on the opportunity to criticize our country because we don’t take our six-yearolds away from their families and banish them to gruelling athletic training camps until they are teenagers. In Canada, bless our athletes’ hearts, it takes real sacrifice and true grit — and the support of gen-

erous family and sponsors — to even come close to following an Olympic dream. In China, only gold medals are celebrated, which is sad. It’s one of the things during these Olympic Games — two and three being Rosie MacLennan and Paula Findlay — that has made me feel proud to be a Canadian. Although I don’t need the Olympics to make me a proud Canadian. While winning medals is a phenomenal achievement we celebrate — and, yes, lots of medals makes the party even better — most of us are comfortable enough with who we are as a nation to simply enjoy the Olympics for their true spirit of competition and display of unparalleled athleticism. (Wow, Michael Phelps.) Go, Canada, go — keep giving it your all.

Ash borer spreads throughout York Region By Chris Traber

ctraber@yrmg.com

If you have an ash tree in your yard, it probably won’t be there in a decade. The emerald ash borer invasion in all of York’s nine municipalities will likely kill most the Region’s ash trees within 10 years, forestry program manager James Lane said. York Region confirmed the presence of the invasive insect in all of its local municipalities yesterday. Results of region’s emerald ash borer trap monitoring survey indicate the municipalities previously unaffected — Newmarket, Georgina, East Gwillimbury, and King — now shows signs of infestation. The infestation rates are lower further north in the region, but dead and dying ash trees will become more obvious throughout York over the next few years. Difficult to detect, fast moving and able to travel far, the woodboring beetle native to Asia first appeared in North America in 2002 and in York Region in 2008. The pest primarily kills trees and can’t be eradicated because of its unique biology, Mr. Lane said. The feisty metallic green insect has no natural enemies here, he said. Research is being conducted to determine whether predators can be transferred from Asia. A pesticide, TreeAzin, exists, but treating one ash tree every two years costs between $200 and $500. Considering the large number of ash trees in York’s regional forests, that’s not a practical solution, Mr.

Lane said. The removal and replacement of dead or declining regional street trees will begin this fall in Vaughan, Markham and Richmond Hill. Affected ash trees on private property are the responsibility of the property owner and the region encourages residents to speak with a qualified arborist or tree care professional to determine the best course of action. There are options for residential tree protection, or removal and replacement. York Region initiated a technical working group in 2011 to co-ordinate efforts and share best practices with municipalities, agencies and stakeholders. Most municipalities have emerald ash borer management plans to help guide decisions on managing the invasive species on municipal property. “The emerald ash borer is a serious threat being dealt with by municipalities across North America,” York Region environmental services committee chairperson and Richmond Hill Regional Councillor Vito Spatafora said. “We can’t stop it, but it is important to continue to manage and invest in the urban forest. Efforts to slow the spread will help, including not moving firewood, as the emerald ash borer can be spread through the movement of infested wood.” York council supports the emerald ash borer management plan, which focuses on timely tree removal and replacement and strategic tree protection, regional chairperson Bill Fisch said.

You wanted to know 4The emerald ash borer attacks and destroys all species of ash tree. Larvae feed under the bark, cutting off the flow of water and nutrients within the tree. 4The insect targets all native species of ash tree. Other species of tree and plant are not susceptible to borer infestation. The borer poses no risk to human health. It is a significant threat to our forests. 4As damage and destruction is hidden under the bark, an infestation is well under way before there is external evidence. 4Natural predators will not be effective in stopping the spread and eradication is not possible. 4York Region and its local municipalities are undertaking an emerald ash borer management program that includes tree removal and replacement and some strategic protection on regional and municipal properties. 4York Region’s street tree removal program will begin in

late 2012 and replanting will follow in the spring of 2013 and beyond. 4The beetle is metallic green and its underside is bright emerald green. It is 8.5 to 14 millimetres (about 1/2 inch) long, about 3.4 millimetres (1/8 inch) wide and features an elongated body, flat head and kidney-shaped, black eyes. 4Larvae, found under the bark, are white and flat, have distinctive bell-shaped segments and can grow up to 30 millimetres (one inch) in length. 4Ash trees can grow to 30 metres tall. 4Leaves are 13 to 30 centimetres long and contain five to 11 leaflets per leaf 4Once a tree shows sign of infestation, tree decline is already well under way. You are strongly advised to contact a tree care professional for confirmation and to determine a course of action.

WHAT CAN YOU DO? Tips for fighting back against the emerald ash borer: 4Do not transport wood, including nursery stock, firewood and wood chips. 4Get involved in planting trees in your neighbourhood. 4Participate in replanting programs, such as York Region’s backyard tree planting program delivered by LEAF, by visiting yourleaf.org 4Pesticides, including TreeAzin, are registered for use in Canada to prevent ash tree damage. Ash trees that are larger, still healthy and structurally sound are the best candidates for treatment.

details of how the town will honour the local trampolinist’s Olympic gold medal, he admits something is in the works. “Rosie is a true local hero,” he said. “She went to school here and her parents are known around town. How could we not celebrate

Vaughan’s 2nd annual Caribbean fest hits street Saturday By Jeremy Grimaldi

jgrimaldi@yrmg.com

Vaughan is a world away from the sun-soaked Caribbean islands that host Soca festivals each year. But that won’t stop the organizers of CariVaughan from bringing a little slice of those islands to town this weekend. Shernett Martin and her team of volunteers are working overtime this week in preparation for

Saturday’s street parade, which will begin at Maple Go Station at 10 a.m. and run until 3 p.m. Backed up by DJs, steel bands and a Tassa group from around Canada, revellers will shake to Caribbean and Latin rhythms on the grounds of Vaughan City Hall, 2141 Major Mackenzie Dr. The festival will also showcase other international and local music, dancers, vendors and

authentic Caribbean cuisine. Ms Martin added that with more than a 10,000-person capacity, the party should become a staple for years to come, with activities for children and adults, and plenty of giveaways. “CariVaughan is built on the principle of planning and executing world-class events that celebrate the culture and music of the Caribbean, while ensuring that we

are using our platform to educate visitors about sickle cell disease,” she said. “Our goal is the creation of a research chair appointment at the Vaughan hospital and the building of infrastructure to treat sickle cell patients.” Ms Martin added that the parade is still hunting for more volunteers. All donations and profits from CariVaughan go toward funding

sickle cell awareness, research, programs and services. Anyone interested in volunteering, sponsoring, participating or working as a vendor is asked to call 647-988-4636. The parade will be followed up by a festival which runs until 8 p.m. Visit www.CariVaughan.com for more details.

Tips on how students can become academic all-stars By Joshua Han

Contributor

As students approach the end of another school year, the conversation about summer plans begins — at school, at home and at the office. Whether it means making plans to go on vacation, enrolling in a camp, playing organized sports, or simply staying home and enjoying some much needed rest and relaxation, the summer months allow students the freedom enjoy a variety of activities. Athletes, in various sports such as hockey and basketball, will use their summer break for off-season training. In order to prepare themselves for their competitive seasons and ensure they are in the best possible position to win their respective championships, they will work tirelessly to improve their physical

JOSHUA HAN: Education consultant says there’s many similarities between students and athletes. strength, endurance and athletic ability. The optimum performances of our favourite sports heroes are due,

to a large extent, on the hard work completed before the season actually starts. In fact, in any given sport, it is clear that the top athletes have a relentless determination to be the best and are passionate about exercise and nutrition, combined with a positive attitude. While there may be no trophies or championships for students to win, we can draw many similarities between students and athletes. In the same way that athletes persevere in the summer, students should also use the summer months to prepare for their next academic year in order to ensure they will be better equipped to achieve their academic goals. Lack of physical exercise in the summer causes athletes to lose muscle mass and return to their sport out of shape and in no position to compete for their ultimate

prize. Students’ minds, just like their bodies, also need exercise during the academic off-season to ensure that they are in top form come September. This is by no means a call to spend all available summer hours in the books or at the library. After the pressures of exams, a more relaxing summer schedule allows students to get some much needed rest. However, getting into the habit of studying during the summer months, for even a few hours a week, will help them boost their overall mental power and performance. The following is a list of some simple ways students can best utilize their summer months to keep their minds sharp for September:  Read regularly.  Have a book discussion with

friends or family members.  Hire a tutor to come to the home to strengthen problem subjects or prepare for the next grade.  Take books outside for a study-picnic.  Set a study schedule: The distractions of summer can, at times, tempt students away from learning and what they want to achieve academically. Create a curriculum that works for summer schedules but that also allows for fun.  Work with a tutor who will hold them accountable for achieving set goals.
