ENVIRONMENT

CHRIS SIMON chris.simon@simcoe.com The environment is a bit like an aging relative - everybody wants to keep it healthy, but there’s plenty of bickering on exactly how to do it. At Innisfil’s Nantyr Shores Secondary School, the Enviroventure specialist high skills major program is shaping young minds around the notion they can still alter the course of the warming planet. The class is located in a portable, a few steps away from the school football field. The room is messy because it is teeming with teenagers more worried about saving the planet than tidying up their own world. They have been working on models of sustainable homes and just returned from the Change Your World conference at York University. A few inches of snow had fallen in the early hours of this spring day, covering grass shoots that had begun to pop up from the field. Within a day the snow was gone again, as the temperature fluctuated. "At our school, we have a lot of environmentally conscious students," Grade 12 student Maegan Damianakis said. "We want to see things change; we don’t want to adapt to the crappy situation going on around us." "We’re trying to speed up our processes, but it’s not going as fast as climate change," added Grade 11 student Johnathan Purkis. "I’m hopeful for change." The students believe that, if everyone pitches in, positive change can be achieved. However, many leading scientists seem less optimistic. In the Greenhouse Gas Progress Report 2016, the Environmental Commissioner of Ontario noted climate change will be less severe here than in other areas of the world, but pushed the need to prepare for the inevitable changes ahead. "It is too late to avoid some dis-

ruptive and expensive changes to our environment and economy," the report states. "But we can still influence how destructive those changes will be. By working together, we can still protect much of what we love." Climate change is already increasing the risk of wildfires, crippling cold-water fish habitats, stressing moose populations and helping invasive species flourish in Ontario. The outdoor winter sports season is shortening. Severe heat and drought have damaged crops and affected water supplies. In 2015, carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere were the highest they’ve been in at least 800,000 years. While Ontario lowered its

carbon footprint to six per cent below 1990 levels in 2014, mostly through the closing of coal-fired power generating stations, it still relies on fossil fuels for 80 per cent of its energy. Transportation represents the largest and fastest growing share of emissions. Blair Feltmate, head of the Intact Centre on Climate Adaptation at the University of Waterloo, says the temperature is up, on average, 2 to 3C in southern Ontario, when compared to pre-industrial levels. For every 1C increase, the atmosphere holds seven per cent more moisture. The result is more extreme weather, including microburst downpours and ice storms - events communities across the province

have experienced in recent years. "It is here to stay; it is irreversible," Feltmate said. "We can slow it down, which we should do, but it will not stop it. Climate change has happened, it is happening and it is going to continue to happen." He says governments need to immediately adopt standards and polices that reflect the impact of climate change and ensure all new infrastructure and residential developments comply. Climate models can be used to determine future floodplains and larger water pipes should be installed during the construction of new subdivisions to lower the risk of future disaster. "Don’t build the place as if you’re oblivious to the threat cli-

mate change or the potential for flooding presents," he said. "You cannot cheat this system. Every day we don’t adapt, frankly, is a day we don’t have." At this current pace, Ontario could see average temperatures climb by another 3 to 4C within decades. While the majority of Ontario’s electricity is produced by nuclear, hydro and renewable sources - leaving no carbon footprint and more energy efficient vehicles have been introduced in recent years, that good work is undone by gridlock on local roadways. "All the energy efficiency has gone out the window by having people sit in traffic endlessly," Feltmate said. "We’ve just got too many people concentrated in one locality. Building a relief line on a subway or getting more GO Transit cars in the morning isn’t going to compensate for the fact we’re going to have another 1.3 million people in this region in the nottoo-distant future." Federal, provincial and municipal governments have taken positive steps to address climate change, but action is about "damage control," rather than "righting the ship," he stressed. Still, others say the little steps, when added up, will help humanity complete the race. "I don’t think being hopeless is the solution," Enviroventure teacher Mark Gaynik said. "You got to think of what kind of world we want to live in. It’s important to advocate and be out there."

ABOUT US
Governments must plan for climate change We’ve passed the point of no return. In her 2016 Greenhouse Gas Progress Report, entitled Facing Change, the Environmental Commissioner of Ontario, Dianne Saxe, writes that what we think of as "normal" weather is gone. In 2015, for the first time in at least 800,000 years, the amount of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere exceeded 400 parts per million and won’t likely dip below that level again in the foreseeable future. "It is too late to avoid some disruptive and expensive changes to our environment and economy," the report states. "But we can still influence how destructive those changes will be." According to the head of the Intact Centre on Climate Adaptation at the University of Waterloo, Blair Feltmate, temperatures in southern Ontario are up, on average, 2 to 3 C compared to pre-industrial levels. "It is here to stay; it is irreversible," Feltmate said. "We can slow it down, which we should do, but it will not stop it. Climate change has happened, it is happening and it is going to continue to happen." The fact of the matter is, we’re already seeing the effects of climate change. Parts of Western Canada are experiencing warmer, drier weather of late - increasing the risk of wildfires, such as that which struck Fort McMurray, Alta. last summer. Parts of Ontario, including the GTA, are getting more severe storms and seeing a greater potential for flooding such as that which occurred earlier this month. And while this part of the world may not be as hard hit by the impacts of climate change as others, officials at all levels of government would still be wise to take the Scouts Motto to heart and be prepared. While action plans aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and carbon footprints are common among governments, the response to the effects of our changing climate are more often reactive rather than proactive. Instead of continuing to plan as though climate change is simply a possibility, policymakers need to treat it as what it is: a reality. Municipalities, for example, should heed Feltmate’s advice and adopt new standards for future development, such as wider water pipes and larger floodplains, to lessen the risk of disasters. At the same time, work must begin on upgrading older infrastructure to help protect existing areas from harm. Climate change is here and it’s not a question of if severe weather will impact us, but when. Our leaders, from municipalities to the federal government, need to act now to mitigate its effects.

• LETTERS TO THE EDITOR • Balanced provincial budget ’smoke and mirrors’ RE: EDITORIAL: Ontario one correction away from a debt crisis, May 4. You wrote, "The Kathleen Wynne government turned the financial page Thursday and introduced a balanced budget ..." No, they did not. It was a fake balance, just ’smoke and mirrors’. One-time money from the sale of Hydro One, government buildings (such as the LCBO and OPG headquarters), was taken as income. You never do this, even if the fake sale is justified (it wasn’t). The financial accountability office (FAO) has debunked this so-called ’balance’, citing the measures
used to create the illusion of balance. The FAO also doubted that the financial projections were valid. It also looks like capital expenditures may have been depreciated over an exaggerated service life. As for the hydro rate relief plan, this is just bizarre. They are simply borrowing more for our children to pay. Meanwhile, the taxpayer pays the rising debt service charges. Roger Jones Thornhill

with the letter of Mr. Moscardelli. We don’t need more politicians. We need politicians with a conscience that keep the words in their promises; that are there to represent the people and the people is 100 per cent, including the one per cent that dictates what to do to the politicians. As I said many times, the population in Vaughan increased more than 10 times in the past 30 years. So, is there need to increase taxes every year? Guido Masutti Vaughan
What happened to pedestrian safety? Twice, in the past week, my wife and I have come close to being killed by SUVs making left turns on
Centre Street. We were lawfully crossing on green lights when the cars swooped down on us at high speed. Fortunately, we were agile enough to jump out of the way. In both cases, I ran after the drivers yelling at them for their stupidity. One driver apologized saying he wasn’t looking, the other driver gave me the middle finger. What ever happened to the concept of "right of way" and respect for pedestrians? Every day I see more and more examples of careless and dangerous driving - people blowing through red lights, U-turns, distracted driving. The problem keeps getting worse. Where will it end? The EA Study will take into account the context of the area including the requirements of the Provincial Plans such as the Oak Ridges Moraine Conservation Plan, planned development in the area, and other studies such as the North Vaughan Transportation Master Plan. The approximate study area limits are shown on the map to the left. The EA Study will be conducted as a Schedule ‘C’ Municipal Road Project in accordance with the current Municipal Engineers Association Municipal Class Environmental Assessment process. This process includes mandatory consultation with public and review agencies, evaluation of design alternatives to the undertaking, assessment and mitigation of potential effects of the proposed Kirby Road extension on the environment. At key study milestones, Public Information Centres (PICs) will provide anyone with an interest in this study with an opportunity to review and discuss project related issues. PIC details will be advertised closer to the consultation dates. In addition, both a citizen liaison committee and a technical advisory group will be established to provide input during the EA Study.

Bullying flick wins $2K prize at Vaughan film fest
yorkregion.com
ADAM MARTIN-ROBBINS amartinrobbins@yrmg.com A flick about bullying snagged top honours in the student category at the Vaughan International Film Festival. The Other Side by Toronto District Christian High School filmmaker Alexander Stevens, and starring some of his fellow students, garnered the $2,000 Best Student Film prize. The nearly three-minute film shows how a bully’s perspective changes after literally walking in the shoes of a student he picks on. The winner was announced Monday, May 15 following the screening of 17 short films by students from high schools across the GTA at Cineplex Cinemas Vaughan (formerly Colossus). Adventures of a Stickman, an animated short by Kate Allsebrook, was a runner up for Best Student Film. Allsebrook, a student at St. Edmund Campion Secondary School in Brampton, was thrilled to have her film screened as part of the festival. "I’m excited," she said prior to the screening. "It’s really not often that you get to see your film on a big screen, so it’s really crazy." Kathryn Blaho, the filmmaker behind the horror flick The Countdown, echoed
that sentiment. "It’s kind of surreal," said Blaho, a Grade 11 student at St. Elizabeth Catholic High School in Thornhill. "I come to Colossus to watch other movies so it’s going to be really cool to see my own film on the screen." Tom McCarthy, an executive vice president with Sony Pictures, flew up from California to attend the film festival. And he was impressed by the students’ creations. "These are the filmmakers of the future and they have so many great ideas and ways of creating their content," McCarthy said. "The films that I see from the students’ standpoint are very sharp, very mature. The production value, the content, the script, everything is so above par that studios could actually learn from the students." Fight the Bite!
against blacklegged ticks and Lyme disease What are blacklegged ticks? Ontario York Region
Ticks are small bugs that feed off the blood of animals and humans. Adult ticks are the size of a sesame seed. Nymphs (adolescent ticks) are no bigger than a poppy seed.
What is Lyme disease?
Ticks can be found on tall grasses and bushes in wooded areas almost anywhere in Ontario including York Region.
Ticks attach themselves to people or animals who brush past. Most tick bites are painless and ticks can attach themselves and feed for up to five days.
Symptoms of Lyme disease may include: • A skin rash • Fatigue or weakness • Headache • FeverLorem or chills ipsum • Dizziness or confusion • Muscle and joint pain • Swollen lymph nodes
Lyme disease is caused by a bacteria called Borrelia burgdorferi which is spread through the bite of an infected blacklegged tick. Not all ticks are infected with the bacteria.
of Most people will start to show signs of illness within one to two weeks. See your y health provider if you develop symptoms of Lyme disease after a tick bite or after visiting a wooded or brushy area.
If you find a tick on yourself or a family member remove it quickly!
Protect yourself each time you are in a wooded or brushy area by: • Wearing light-coloured, long pants, long-sleeved tops and closed footwear • Using an insect repellent containing DEET or icaridin
1. Grasp the tick with tweezers as close as possible to your skin and pull it straight out 2. Do not put anything on the tick or try to burn it off 3. Disinfect the area with rubbing alcohol 4. Wrap the tick in a moist paper towel and put in a screw-top container 5. Store it in the fridge until you can bring it into a York Region Public Health location
• Walking in the middle of the trail • Showering when you get home to remove unattached ticks • Checking yourself, your family and your pets for ticks • Removing attached ticks as quickly as possible

Lobsterfest, Miss Vaughan team up for Children’s Wish ADAM MARTIN-ROBBINS amartinrobbins@yrmg.com The Rotary Club of Kleinburg, Nobleton and Schomberg’s popular Lobsterfest fundraiser happens later this month, and this year, it will help raise funds for the Children’s Wish Foundation
of Canada through a partnership with Miss Vaughan. The 18th annual all-you-caneat event takes place at the Trisan Centre at 25 Dillane Dr. in Schomberg on Saturday, May 27, starting at 6:30 p.m. Tickets, which cost $80, can be purchased at the Nobleton Sco-
tiabank branch or from a local Rotarian. In addition to the food - lobster, hip of beef, mussels, salads and dessert - there will be live and silent auctions, skills games and a 50-50 draw. Proceeds will go to support the Children’s Wish Foundation, which grants wishes
to children between age three and 17 who have been diagnosed with a life-threatening illness The support came about after Rushi Chakrabarti, who captured the title of Miss Vaughan at the Miss World Ontario competition in January, approached the club about joining forces to help
her raise funds for the nonprofit. Chakrabarti, along with all the other young women vying for the Miss World Canada crown, are raising money for the charity as the pageant’s nonprofit partner this year. To find out more, email john.westcott@rubiq.ca.

Strangers connect over steak and a dying man’s wish KIM ZARZOUR kzarzour@yrmg.com As he neared the end of his life, Angelo Nocera had two simple requests. He wanted to taste steak one last time, and he wanted to be with his wife on her birthday. Neither wish seemed very likely. Terminal cancer had taken away the 82-yearold’s ability to eat anything but puréed food, and his wife, Rosa, had passed away two years ago. But thanks to human, and divine, intervention, the Thornhill man was able to have both. Angelo was one of those salt-of-the-earth types, a man who loved life, loved his grandkids, his garden, card games and a good cup of coffee. He’d come to Canada from Sicily almost 50 years ago to build a better life. He didn’t speak English, but he could work hard and that is what he did as a labourer all his life, raising three children with his dear wife Rosa until she died two years ago. His daughter-in-law Angela Pecchia-Nocera remembers him fondly. He used to joke that they were two sides of one coin - Angelo and Angela. "He was the kind of guy that when you visit him, you hadn’t even sat down yet and he was getting something out of the fridge for you." Chances are, he’d offer

you some of his homemade prosciutto or salami. Angelo loved meat. Which is why, as he came to the end of his life and doctors said he had just a week or so left, he asked for one last steak dinner. But before his family could make that wish come true, doctors told him he could no longer eat solids. Puréed food only. It’s a helpless feeling, knowing your loved one has no hope for recovery. You want to do something, anything, to make him

comfortable. Angela called The Keg at highways 404 and 7. "Can you put one of your steaks in a blender?" she asked dining room manager Chris Papadimitriou. Chris was a little taken aback by the unusual request, but when he found out it was for a dying man, he vowed to make it happen. After some online research, he came up with an idea to grind steak with a little French soup base. He gave it a try in his restaurant food processor and it
came out nice and smooth. Excited, he called Angela back, but she was putting her children to bed at the time and her husband, Michael, was with his father at Hill House Hospice on the other side of town, north of Major Mackenzie in Richmond Hill. No worries, Chris said. "I’ll deliver it." "I don’t want you to go out of your way," she said. "It’s no trouble," he said. "I’ll bring it over on my way home from work." It wasn’t really on his way home. Chris lives in Pickering. But he didn’t tell her that. "Hold on and I’ll get my VISA card," Angela said. No need, he told her.
We’re happy to do this. "I was floored to see such good human beings," Angela recalled. Angela’s 8-year-old daughter was beside her mom in bed, listening. "Mommy," she said, "I’m going to marry someone like that." "I told her, ’Absolutely, you do need to marry someone like that.’" Chris doesn’t want any praise, though. "At the end of the day, people do so many more important, bigger things. It’s kind of embarrassing, but humbling, too, and I’m just glad I could do it." He had never been to a hospice before and he was impressed with Hill House.
It felt like a cosy home. Angelo had been sleeping a lot as his body geared down, but on the night that Chris arrived with the steak, the elderly man was awake and alert. They chatted a bit with Michael translating, laughed about how they shared similar heritage (Angelo from Italy, Chris from Greece). "God bless you and God bless your family," Angelo said to Chris. "This is what life comes down to." Chris looked around the room filled with family, at the walls of photos of Angelo’s loved ones, and he knew it was true. It was an introspective ride home, filled with thoughts about his own life, his own family. "You always think you have the time, but you don’t," he mused. "At the end, it is the end. Makes no difference who you are, your time is here." He slipped into his children’s bedroom and kissed their sleeping foreheads. Angelo, meanwhile, hung on for a few days more - long enough to share his seasoned advice with his family, "get along with each other, love each other, respect each other" longer than any of the doctors expected. And each morning, he asked, what is the date today? On Friday, April 28, he left them all. It was his wife Rosa’s birthday.
