SIMON MARTIN smartin@yrmg.com The life of dairy farmer is not sexy. It consists of milking cows 365 days a year for decades on end. A vacation? Not likely. You’ll be hard-pressed to fit in an afternoon wedding in between milking sessions. That secluded lifestyle was thrust into the public eye last month when U.S. President Donald Trump spoke out against the Canadian dairy supply management system. It certainly was surprising for Whitchurch-Stouffville dairy farmer Brad Hulshof. He is one of around 25 dairy farmers left in York Region. "I don’t think any dairy farmer was expecting to get shots fired from the U.S. president," Hulshof said. Schomberg dairy farmer John Phillips says the Canadian Dairy industry is often misunderstood. "I’m surprised and not surprised," he said. "We didn’t do anything wrong." All of it sudden it seems politicians in the United States and Canada find milk great again as it becomes somewhat of a political football. Conservative Party leadership favourite Maxime Bernier’s most talked about policy is his plan to phase out supply management in Canada’s milk, chicken and egg business. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had to come out in defence of the country’s supply management system after Trump’s comments and the fuss it stirred. "It was a surprising turn of events that brought agriculture to the forefront," Hulshof said. "The (supply

The Hulshof family have been dairy farmers in Stouffville for 50 years. Brad Hulshof, along with other farmers, aren’t too worried about U.S president Donald Trump’s tough talk toward the Canadian dairy industry. management) system works really well. We are the envy of the dairy farming world." Trump made his comments in Wisconsin, which is the dairy engine of the United States. Grassland Dairy Products had announced that it would be reducing its milk intake. As a result, 75 U.S. dairy farms would need to find another place to sell their milk. They took aim at the Canadian dairy industry for creating a new classification of milk to compete against milk proteins that were largely imported to
Canada. Hulshof didn’t think the criticism held much weight. Milk proteins, or diafiltered milk, wasn’t covered in the NAFTA agreement so U.S. producers had unfettered access to the Canadian market. As the demand for this product became greater, the dairy farmers decided they had to do something. "We competitively priced our dairy to match them," Hulshof said. Phillips echoed that sentiment. He said Canada’s supply management system ensures that there isn’t
an overproduction of milk which can lead to a market crash in the industry. "The United States have bailed out dairy twice in the last 20 years," he said. The Canadian government doesn’t have to give any money to keep farmers afloat, he said. What mystifies Hulshof is that the United States actually has a trade surplus with Canada when it comes to dairy products. "We allow import into our country," he said. "There are lots of imports that still come in." The Dairy Farmers of
Ontario pointed out in the wake of Trump’s comments that the United States enjoys a significant trade surplus in the dairy trade. According to the DFO, the trade surplus was roughly $445 million in 2016. While supply management works well for the dairy farmers, there are many who think it is a bad system for the consumer. York University economics professor Bernie Wolf is one who is anti-supply management. He said the problem is Canadians end up paying an artificially

high price for milk because the system doesn’t allow for market forces to drive down the price. "That has the most impact on the poor people in society," he said. Another unseen cost of the system, according to Wolf, is that the Canadian government has to sacrifice other things while making international trade agreements to protect the "sacred cow" that is Canadian dairy. If Canadians could see what we gave up to protect our national dairy industry, they might not be in favour of the system, Wolf said. Not every economist agrees. University of Guelph economics professor Mike von Massow said the current system is working well. "The benefits accrue to dairy producers and rural communities," he said. The problem with dairy is it is a highly perishable product, so if processors say they can’t take anymore product there’s not a lot farmers can do with it, von Massow said. While some claim the supply management system makes the cost of milk higher than it is in the United States, von Massow said Canadians pay more for food across the board than people in the United States. Canadians pay more for beef, bread and pop, which are industries that don’t have supply management. One final benefit of the system in Canada is the animal welfare aspect of it. "We don’t have the same number of large, 1,000-cow dairies as they do in the United States," he said. "Cows in Canadian dairies on average live longer and are productive longer. We don’t push them as hard."

Weathered flags should be grounded With Canada Day celebrations, marking the 150th year in our nation’s history, rapidly approaching, flags will be flying from coast to coast. In many cases, bright, pristine Canadian flags will be front and centre at legions, government offices, businesses, and private residences. They’ll be prominent at countless special events and even attached to cars and trucks. And, unfortunately, there might be a few cases where our cherished symbol looks less than pristine, maybe even a bit ragged and It might surprise threadbare. It might surprise some some to realize to realize that there are some pretty specific rules that there are regarding the display of our nation emblem, the some pretty Maple Leaf. specific rules Policies are in place to govern how the flag is regarding the flown from everything from attaching it to a vehicle or display of our building, to suspending it nation emblem, above a street, or using it a flagpole. the Maple Leaf. on For example, if a flag is suspended above a street, the rule is: "The upper part of the leaf (the points of the leaf) should face north in an east-west street. "The upper part of the leaf should face east in a northsouth street." If you want to hang a flag flat against a surface, here’s the rule you’ll need to follow: "If hung horizontally, the upper part of the leaf (the points of the leaf) should be up and the stem down. "If hung vertically, the flag should be placed so that the upper part of the leaf points to the left and the stem to the right from the point of view of the observer facing the flag." Want to fold your flag? The ceremonial folding of our national flag involves six to eight people following six specific steps. Has your flag seen better days? "When a flag becomes tattered and is no longer in a suitable condition for use, it should be destroyed in a dignified way." We’re not quite sure what constitutes a ’dignified’ disposal, but we do concur with the notion that the Maple Leaf should fly only in a pristine condition. To display Canada’s national flag is to demonstrate one’s patriotism and appreciation for our good fortune in being able to live in the best country on the planet. To display a weathered, shabby version is to do a disservice to this most important symbol of our nation.

Schools should foster love of science, discovery Re: Is Science Class Failing Students? May 11. I couldn’t agree more with your article or with Chris McGowan’s comments. I can only speak from my experience as an elementary school teacher as I haven’t had the opportunity to work at the secondary level. I have a BSc. in biomedicine with post secondary courses in chemistry, biology, physics and calculus to name a few. Despite this I am not the science teacher for my school even though I may have the only BSc. on staff. The reason, we need to be jacks of all trades, teaching subjects in

Please put garbage out in morning My name is Charlotte and I am nine years old. I am very upset. People are putting their garbage out at night and the animals are getting into it and tearing big holes, then the wind is blowing it all over the community. If we put the garbage out in the morning, then the nighttime animals wouldn’t come out and get it. I hope you agree with me. Charlotte Hamley

A SONGWRITING WILLS LAWYER “Photos in a Drawer” On Stage As well as being a Wills lawyer, I am also a The Wills Lawyer professional songwriter. I am so proud to work with two amazing co-writers, Lewis Manne and Wendy Watson. Songs we have written are playing on radio across the country. Years back, Reuters did a feature story on me entitled “Canadian Lawyer Pens Legal Hurtin Music”. The first line in that article reads, “When he is not working to settle family feuds for his clients, a Canadian lawyer writes songs about them getting airplay from Toronto to San Francisco”. I have had a passion for songwriting since my early teenage years, long before I gave any thought to becoming a lawyer. My late parents, Rose and Jack, inspired me to keep this passion alive and to keep writing. I wrote and I wrote, and when I met Lewis and Wendy, my songwriting life changed. They turned my words into songs that have touched Les Kotzer so many lives. I have written songs in honour of my late mother, my late father, and a song entitled “Crying To The Moon” in memory of my late brother Joel, who I cherished. I am so thrilled that the very talented Alessia De Gasperis of York Region is singing “Crying To The Moon”. The song is playing on the Jewel radio network across Canada (88.5 FM in Toronto). So many people have contacted me to tell me how much they love the song and how much they love Alessia De Gasperis’ performance. It is also being played on Wave FM 94.7. Due to the success of “Crying To The Moon”, Alessia recorded another one of my songs entitled, “Just Say (It’s a Beautiful Day)”. This song was launched on 105.9 The Region. It is now on their regular playlist. You can hear these songs and my other songs on my songwriting website songwritinglawyer.com. You can also hear a songwriter spotlight interview I did with host Rosie Ferguson of 105.9 The Region. I am so proud to announce that an amazing Canadian vocalist and performer, Brian Roman, has recently recorded a song that is very special to my heart entitled, “Photos In A Drawer”. The song pays tribute to my late mother Rose, who always felt that her greatest treasures were in the faces of her family. After she passed away, I was walking through her room and came across a drawer filled with photos of my childhood, seeing family and friends frozen in time as they were so many years ago. I had to write a song based on those photos from the past. Brian Roman has a very interesting life story. At the age of 42 and a father of four, he made the life altering decision to pursue his dream. He left a career in the life insurance business after 20 years. In April of 2006, he staged a career launching concert at Toronto’s Roy Thompson Hall. He had booked the hall on his own and then worked diligently to sell tickets. He was an unlikely candidate because he says he did not play any instruments, had never been in a band, not even part time, he could not read music and had no idea what key he sang in. Hard work and determination paid off. The show was a sold out success, and the story was featured on radio stations, in magazines, on television and was the feature story the following morning on the front page of a major Toronto newspaper. Over the next 11 years, Brian toured across Canada and the United States. He said he has shared stages with the likes of The Barenaked Ladies, The Nylons, Rita MacNeil and Jose Feliciano. After spending many months at a time on the road, playing to sold out crowds and seeing his name in lights on the same marquees as major celebrities and well known artists, I think it can be said that Brian is truly living his dream. While touring the U.S., Brian discovered that theatres were struggling to appeal to a younger demographic. He felt there was a need for a show that would reach many age groups. He felt his group Roc Opra Natra was the answer. This group brings together the three dynamic voices of Christopher Dallo, Danny Scott and Brian Roman. These performers weave a tapestry of melodies from Sinatra to Rod Stewart to Josh Groban to Bocelli. On May 30, 2017, they will do a rare Canadian performance at 8:00 p.m. in the Markham Theatre. During the show, Brian will be performing my song “Photos In A Drawer”. If my mom, dad and brother Joel were here, they would be so proud. Brian told me that he and his group are doing the show to help a family they know that is in desperate need of financial help. According to Brian, all players in the show are donating their time to help this family. For more information or to get tickets, you can go to brianroman.com or markham.ca or call 647-227-8101. CRISIS
War Measures Act spurs Quebec independence “Just watch me!” Perhaps the most famous quote ever attributed to Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau can be traced to the October Crisis of 1970. It happened when the FLQ (Front de liberation du Quebec) kidnapped British diplomat James Cross and Quebec cabinet minister Pierre Laporte, who was subsequently murdered. Trudeau then invoked the never-beforeimposed War Measures Act, which limited civil liberties. The police arrested and detained 497 people, all but 62 of whom were released without charges. Kipling Avenue and Highway 7 Study Public Open House Meeting #2 Date:
Wednesday, June 7, 2017
Time:
7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Location: Woodbridge Public Library – Meeting Room 150 Woodbridge Avenue Woodbridge, Ontario L4L 2S7
On Wednesday, June 7, 2017, the Policy Planning & Environmental Sustainability Department and the City’s lead consultant, Meridian Planning Consultants Inc. will host the second Public Open House meeting in regard to the Kipling Avenue and Highway 7 Study. The lands subject to the study are located in the northeast quadrant of Kipling Avenue and Highway 7 intersection as shown on the Study Area Map. On December 9, 2014 Vaughan Council directed that a land use study be undertaken to examine whether changes to the current Official Plan policies governing the use and development of the subject lands is warranted given the recent development approvals in the immediate area. The study would consider appropriate land uses and development criteria, such as permitted density, building heights and urban design objectives for the area. This process may form the basis for an amendment to the Official Plan as a result of the findings of the study. The purpose of the meeting is to provide a project status update, gather public input on the draft land use plan and to discuss next steps. The meeting will include a presentation by the consulting team, followed by a discussion, which will provide an opportunity to receive comments that will assist in finalizing the study and resulting plan. For more information please contact Clement Chong at (905) 832-8585 ext. 8214 or by email at clement.chong@vaughan.ca or Farhad Jalili at 832-8585 ext. 8237 or by email at farhad.jalili@vaughan.ca. For more information on the Kipling Avenue and Highway 7 Study, please visit the project website: https://www.vaughan.ca/projects/policy_planning_projects/Pages/KiplingAvenue-and-Highway-7-Study.aspx

LISA QUEEN lqueen@yrmg.com The former Vaughan employee, who complained she was sexually harassed by Vaughan’s disgraced exdeputy mayor Michael Di Biase, is far from alone, city integrity commissioner Suzanne Craig said. Such conduct is a concern at workplaces far and wide, she said. "As noted by the Honourable Marie Deschamps (former Supreme Court justice) in her external report on sexual harassment in the Canadian Armed Forces, numerous organizations are struggling to address the prevalence of inappropriate sexual conduct," Craig said in her report, saying the time is right to tackle the issue. Craig’s efforts to shed light on the broader problem of sexual harassment in the workplace is being applauded by York Region women’s shelters. "Sexual violence (including harassment) in the
workplace is like any form of violence against women. It’s genderbased vio- Lorris lence and Herenda women experience it on a daily basis," Lorris Herenda, executive director of Yellow Brick House, said. "When you think of the prevalence of stats, that one in four women experience violence in their lives, you know that it is happening in workplaces as well." Victims, especially single parents, are often reluctant to report workplace sexual harassment for fear of losing their jobs, said Herenda, adding there are also male victims. "It’s putting somebody in a horrifying position," she said. While sexual harassment in the workplace has been an issue for years, more victims are coming forward in light of legisla-
tion such as Bill 168, a 2010 amendment to Ontario’s Occupational Health and Safety Act, aimed at better protecting workers, Herenda said. Workplaces and society need to put policies and laws in effect that properly support victims in coming forward and reporting harassment, Jehan Chaudhry, executive director of Sandgate Women’s Shelter, said. "There is harassment out there, sexual harassment, and everybody needs to find ways to make it easier for people who have experienced that to be able to talk about it and there not be reprisals," she said. Victims often struggle with feeling of fear, anger, denial, frustration, pain and even post-traumatic stress disorder, Chaudhry said. She applauded York Regional Police, which works with Sandgate to address issues such as sexual harassment.
Di Biase eligible for severance ADAM MARTIN-ROBBINS amartinrobbins@yrmg.com Vaughan Deputy Mayor Michael Di Biase is entitled to collect thousands of dollars in severance pay despite abruptly resigning last week after the integrity commissioner’s finding he sexually harassed a city employee. The revelation came May 23 during a special council meeting held to address Integrity Commissioner Suzanne Craig’s damning 28-page report released May 18. Claudia Storto, deputy city manager of legal and human resources, confirmed Di Biase, who served on council for nearly 30 years, is eligible for a payout. But it’s unclear how much money he can collect. The city’s policy states any councillor who resigns for any reason, other than removal by the “operation of law,” is entitled to one month’s salary for each consecutive year of service, up to a maximum of 24 months. The city hasn’t disclosed the exact amount Di Biase is eligible to receive. \ Last year, his base salary was about
$85,600, according to a report on the city’s website. If he’s paid out at that rate for his last 6-1/2 years of consecutive service, he’d get more than $45,000. The Region of York, where Di Biase also sat, has also confirmed he’s entitled to $30,440 in severance, bringing his total payout to more than $75,000. A councillor can decline severance under the city’s policy. Di Biase wasn’t at Tuesday’s meeting and neither he nor his lawyer could be reached for comment about whether he’ll accept or decline severance pay. He has repeatedly denied the allegations against him and they haven’t been tested in court. Based on her findings, Craig concluded Di Biase’s actions “constitute sexual harassment and a breach of Rule 14 of the Code (of Ethical Conduct), which prohibits such harassment.” Councillors voted Tuesday to receive the integrity commissioner’s report and accept her finding Di Biase breached the city’s code of ethics. Program teaches students about waste reduction ADAM MARTIN-ROBBINS amartinrobbins@yrmg.com A Canadian charity is offering to teach local students how to become "superheroes" of environmental protection. The Planet Protector Academy, in partnership with the city, is running a pilot program geared to students in grades 3 to 5, to teach kids about reducing waste. The program, dubbed Zero Heroes, features in-class activities about waste and consumption issues game shows, writing raps about food scraps, drawing posters and
team math competitions - led by a website projected at the front of the class. Students are then given at-home missions that involve their family to help spread the message. DreamRider Productions developed the program, which is being offered through funding support received from Vaughan’s waste management division. Schools or teachers interested in bringing the program to their classrooms can contact Sion Lanini at sion@dreamriderproductions.com or 604-7573212.
