This is who I am — but I had to fight like hell to figure it out. I grew up in over 13 towns and cities across the country and experienced the public education system and its imagined Canadian identity in every one of those places. Yep — I learned the propaganda that every Canadian my age learned: We are a nation built on universal values of democracy, human rights and environmentalism intimately connected through a "mosaic" of diversity, a northern climate and pristine landscape. Let’s get real … all Canadians must question the legitimacy of these "imaginary" claims due to the historical hatred directed toward the First Peoples of this land and the ongoing lack of awareness, education, and movement building toward reconciliation and the forging of reciprocal relationships based on equality and respect. Just today I was on Facebook calling for the resignation of Sen. Lynn Beyak, who said earlier this year that "good deeds" and "remarkable works" on the part of well-meaning residential school officials have been ignored in favour of more negative reports by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Just yesterday I was donating mon-
ey to the GoFundMe campaign initiated by the relatives of Barbara Kentner, an indigenous woman living in Thunder Bay who was the victim of a drive-by assault in January 2017 by a white man who shouted, “I got one,” after throwing a very large trailer hitch at her body from a moving vehicle. My challenge is to answer the call of one of Canada’s most worthy senators, the former chief commissioner of the Truth and Reconciliation Committee who, in response to Beyak’s statements during a public forum in Ottawa on missing and murdered indigenous women, asked Canadians: “Why can’t you always remember this?" He was referring to the deliberate amnesia that Canadians have when they ‘imagine’ who they are. “Why can’t we remember and honour the truth of our nation ... this is about memorializing those people who have been the victims of a great wrong." I’m remembering who and what Canada actually is … and therefore I’m imagining what we could become. A confederation that chooses not to forget its past - but rather memorializes it in order to imagine and build something better. How about Kanata 150? Acknowledging the rich history already embedded deep in the land that includes the principle that rights, equity and respect should belong to all. We won’t be intimidated A group of disgruntled city councillors in Brampton seem to be confusing freedom of the press with freedom from the press. Angry with recent coverage by the local newspaper, some councillors are proposing a motion to scrutinize the media’s questioning of elected officials. It’s a thinly veiled attempt to intimidate reporters. The motion calls for all media inquiries to be posted on the city website along with responses. Councillors want future meeting agendas to include time to respond to media coverage. Meanwhile, at least one member of Brampton council has taken to Twitter, suggesting the local paper isn’t providing "real news." If it sounds reminiscent of the antics of President Donald Trump and his staff, that’s because there’s a strong and troubling parallel. This is all in reaction to assertive reporting that is critical of the city’s leadership. Councillors say they have put the press on notice. Such a statement demonstrates a blatant disregard for, or ignorance of, the checks and balances already strongly entrenched in the Canadian media system. Accountability starts with the news outlet itself. Complaints can be made directly to a journalist, editor, or publisher. If the response is unsatisfactory, individuals can contact the press council. The National NewsMedia Council deals with matters concerning fairness of coverage, relevance, balance and accuracy. Its members (including this newspaper) abide by its decisions. It’s a free and open process for the public. When media make a mistake, we own it very publicly. That’s not something everyone can say. And there is the law. Canada has very strict libel laws. These laws protect the reputation of individuals and organizations from false and derogatory remarks. Media are bound by these laws. There have been no formal complaints made regarding recent coverage of Brampton. Instead, this is about a group of councillors lashing out because they are upset with what strong local reporting has unearthed. These councillors forget that media are not accountable to elected officials. Media are accountable to the public, the same group whose money these councillors are spending. Claiming to put the press on notice is a poorly disguised attack on the fundamental freedoms laid out in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Councillors are trying to stifle critical voices and control our free, independent and responsible media. Any attempt by elected officials to limit the free flow of information is an attack on the basic democratic principles our society upholds. It won’t work. • LETTERS TO THE EDITOR • Severance for deputy mayor disturbing Re: Vaughan deputy mayor eligible for severance despite sexual harassment finding, May 23. As disturbing as the sexual harassment charges founded by the integrity commissioner are, the fact that Deputy Mayor Michael Di Biase is eligible to collect a severance package and a pension are even more disturbing. As a Vaughan resident, I do not understand how a public servant is eligible for a severance package when they have voluntarily resigned. As a taxpayer of this city, I am appalled with the fact that my hard-earned tax dollars are being used for a payout to Di Biase. I would also like for the City of Vaughan to disclose that
amount to which Di Biase is entitled. I would urge council to put forth a motion to hold back Di Biase’s severance and pension until this term of council is over. I would also urge that even if Di Biase is entitled to his severance, he should donate the funds to a local charity such as Yellow Brick House, that helps women that are victims of sexual harassment. This would be an act of remorse on the part of Di Biase and would speak volumes to not only the victim but also the residents of Vaughan. Furio Liberatore Vaughan

despite sexual harassment finding, May 23. A tumultuous City of Vaughan political career, continuously wrought with controversy, is finally coming to an end. Some issues were proven, some were never resolved, and I would not be surprised if there were instances that have never been publicly acknowledged. Finally, council accepts the findings of the Integrity Commissioner, without trying to submarine her report. What I, and apparently quite a few residents of the City of Vaughan, don’t understand: Michael Di Biase is found to have committed a serious workplace misconduct, yet he is allowed to resign, ahead of a potential termination, and receive a golden handshake of almost $100,000. His benefit package will probably continue, as
well. Resignation, although he vehemently denies these "serious" accusations, in order to receive the severance package! Anyone facing this situation, with the complete belief of innocence, would want to have any/all of these allegations absolved. Selling out one’s potential question of integrity and self-respect for under $100,000 sure leaves doubt in my mind. As well, did Di Biase pay back the almost $21,000 from September 2016? This was never followed up in the media. To complete this political fiasco, I wonder if the current administration is considering a "grand retirement celebration" in DiBiase’s honour, complete with a parade and a marching band. ject, they were looking to build an 8-storey building with 143 apartments, three two-storey townhouses and ground floor commercial uses on the lands known as 177, 185 and 197 Woodbridge Ave. Two of those properties are home to Dr. Peter McLean House (built in 1893) and Thomas Frazier Wallace House (built in 1875), which the developer proposed to restore and retain. After meeting with the community, the original proposal was modified to feature a seven-storey, 119unit building. But, last September, city council rejected the developers’ plan amid concerns from area residents including the levelling of the hilly site, the removal of several large trees and relocation of the heritage homes to the edge of the property. The developer appealed to the Ontario Municipal Board.

These two properties, at 185 and 197 Woodbridge Ave. along with the building at 177, are located on the site of a controversial condo development now set to proceed after the developers, the City of Vaughan and local ratepayers reached a settlement agreement. The heritage homes will be restored and retained as part of the development. A settlement hearing took place April 28 and the OMB accepted the proposal for the six-storey, 85-unit building, according to a city staff report. A spokesperson for the developers was not available for comment Tuesday, May 30.
"From street level you’ll see the two (historic) homes," Verna said. "From the corner, there will be a three-storey podium then it’s setback to the building, which goes up to four storeys, then there’s a slight setback to bring it up to six storeys."
WILLIS ROAD BRIDGE REHABILITATION The City of Vaughan will begin construction to restore the Willis Road Bridge located on Willis Road between Riverside Drive and Islington Avenue, starting the week of June 5, 2017. Construction is expected to be complete by the end of November 2017.

Council will appoint member of public to replace Di Biase ADAM MARTIN-ROBBINS amartinrobbins@yrmg.com Vaughan council is going to appoint former deputy mayor Michael Di Biase’s replacement, rather than spending nearly $1 million to hold a city-wide byelection so voters can choose who fills his seat. Councillors voted unanimously June 5 to press ahead with a public appointment process, at a cost of about $5,000, after a report from the city clerk stated a byelection to fill Di Biase’s local and regional councillor seat until the end of the term, in 2018, comes with an estimated seven-figure price tag. "I think it is not financially responsible for this council to go forward with an election when the individual who would be elected probably would serve around a year," Thornhill Councillor Alan Shefman said, echoing sentiments expressed by his council
colleagues before the vote. Di Biase, who served on council for nearly 30 years, including a stint as mayor from 2002 to 2006, announced he was stepping down May 18 after the release of a damning report by integrity commissioner Suzanne Craig that found he sexually harassed a city employee. Di Biase has denied the allegations and said, in announcing his resignation, that he’s innocent but was stepping down because he does "not wish to be a distraction from the important work that is ahead for our council in protecting the interests of this city." Council’s other option was to appoint one of the five local ward councillors to Di Biase’s seat then hold a byelection, at a cost of $200,00 to $250,000, or appoint a member of the public to fill that post. Applicants get the chance to "make their case" to councillors at a special council meeting, expected
to be held by the end of June. To be eligible for appointment to city council, you must be 18 or older, a Canadian citizen, a resident of Vaughan or an owner or tenant of land in
Vaughan or the spouse of an owner or tenant. Those who apply for the job are allowed to deliver a five-minute pitch before councillors go through a voting process to choose the appointee.
But the person council appoints won’t become deputy mayor and get the nearly $8,000 salary bump that comes with that title. Under the city’s bylaw, the deputy mayor is the regional council candidate who garnered the most votes in the 2014 municipal election. Since Regional Councillor Mario Ferri finished second to Di Biase in that race, he’s now deputy mayor. "This is nothing new, it’s been done in the past, where we appoint someone straight to the regional council, avoid the $1 million cost, and the manifestation of democracy... is found in the fact that the entire process would be public," Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua said. "I think we need to move very quickly, as we did with the resignation. Now we need to also move swiftly on making sure that we have that position filled as soon as possible."

Thornhill June 6. Police received a call at 11:07 a.m. and a witness reported that two elderly women were "beating each other up" with canes, police said. The fight was broken up, and no injuries were re-
ported for the women or witnesses. The fight began in the parking lot of the plaza’s grocery store. One of the women left in a van prior to the arrival of police. Police are investigating.

Canadian Italian Heritage Foundation is hosting a free, two-day event to mark Canada’s 150th birthday. The event, which will celebrate the contributions of Canadians of Italian origin, will feature music, a trade show, food, sport and active living activities.
It will also showcase various cultural communities that preceded and succeeded the Italian communities’ integration and contributions to Canada. The event takes place June 10 and 11 at the Rialto at the Veneto Centre in Vaughan, 7465 Kipling Ave.,

Danielle Heifa has made a short film, entitled Honest Frank, about her grandfather, an Italian immigrant who came to Toronto at age 17 and worked at Honest Ed’s for 60 years. He started as a cleaner and became a buyer in the hardware department. He retired at 74 when the store closed. The film will have its premiere during the Italian Contemporary Film Festival, which has screenings in Toronto and Vaughan. Frank, Doug and John - and once I met them I got goosebumps," she said. "I was like, these guys are cool. They’re kind of like guys who’ve been in a time capsule for 50 years, as the store has, and they’re all immigrants from all over - Italy, Venezuela, Scotland." She decided to film events leading up to the last days of the store and the closing celebrations to create a documentary project, dubbed The Honest Men Project, of which Honest Frank is the first instalment. "The news stories (about the closing) tell a very one-dimensional story: It’s like, this is a store, it’s kitschy, it’s cute, it’s fun, everybody came here when they were immigrants . There’s more depth to this (documentary). It’s about the pillars who were the store." Honest Frank will be screened June 11 at 9 p.m. at Cineplex Cinemas (formerly Colossus) in Vaughan, 3555 Hwy. 7 W. It is paired with feature-length film Non c’è più religione (Messy Christmas). When Honest Ed’s closed its doors in December, news outlets lamented the disappearance of Toronto’s iconic discount department store that catered to new immigrants and the working class with reports chalked full of colourful references to the kitschy items sold there and the "gimmicky signs" used to hawk its wares. But for Frank Salerno, the store’s closure was a life-changing event. The 74-year-old worked there for 57 years, only retiring when it closed. An Italian immigrant, who arrived in Toronto from Calabria in 1952, Salerno landed a job at Honest Ed’s at 17. He started out as a cleaner and, by 1972, worked his way up the ladder to become buyer for the hardware department. Now his niece, Danielle Heifa, a Thornhill native, has created a short documentary film about his life, Honest Frank, that will have its world première at the Italian Contemporary Film Festival, running June 8 to 16. "It’s a classic immigrant story and it’s interwoven with the store and the history of the store," said Heifa, 27, who has also made a short documentary about Canada’s asbestos industry, Canary in the Mine, in 2012. "He retired really, really quietly. There wasn’t a huge hoopla so I really wanted, through the project, to make this a tribute to him and his entire life in the store because the store has been his life. In the movie, you learn that the store was his family and the family was his store; everything was intertwined," she added. The six-minute film was three years in the making. "I was working at a documentary production company right beside Honest Ed’s and . I went to have lunch with my uncle and the producer I was with saw him and said, ’This guy’s an amazing character you should do something with him,’" she recalled. Heifa balked at first, but eventually warmed to the idea and asked her uncle if he’d be OK with it. He agreed. "I met him and his other friends who have worked there for like 50 years as well - Frank, Frank,

Walking through a union information picket at a Woodbridge LCBO outlet June 1, George McKenzie said he doesn’t want to see the privatization of liquor sales. "They shouldn’t privatize it. We’re getting good service as it is now, it’s working well, so why change it?" the Toronto resident said outside the store at 7850 Weston Rd. north of Hwy. 7. "If they privatize it, it just gives the government a whole whack of money at one time and there’s no more revenue from this over the years." The June 1 information picket came just days before the Ontario Public Service Employees’ Union (OPSEU) filed a no board report June 5, indicating labour negotiations are struggling and signalling a possible strike at LCBO stores by Canada Day. At

They also warned customers that LCBO management is "pushing a privatization agenda" which would make it easier to expand the private sale of alcohol, putting at risk $2.4 billion in annual revenue used to pay for provincial services. With the union and the LCBO in the middle of labour negotiations, OPSEU employees are holding information pickets are liquor stores across the province. Privatization would mean less revenue for teachers, hospitals, universities and highways, OPSEU Local 376 president Evan Wickham said. "This is the public’s domain, this is their business. By turning it over, we’re
doing exactly what we did to (toll road Hwy.) 407. Look at what happened, it’s a large loss of revenue for us and what did that turn into? Higher taxes," he said. "Where is the money going to come from if it’s not coming from the LCBO?" Wickham is also concerned privatization could make it easier for underage consumers to buy liquor. LCBO media relations coordinator Christine Bujold referred questions about the union’s concerns to the Crown corporation’s blog, lcbonegotiations.com "The introduction of greater competition in the marketplace has changed the beverage alcohol landscape in Ontario, and we have been very clear on the ," a May 18 entry said. "The LCBO’s new business as a wholesaler to grocers gives the government a higher return than what it receives from the LCBO’s retail sale of beverage alcohol.

On Thursday May 25, 2017, York Regional Council passed The Regional Municipality of York development charge bylaw, No. 2017-35, which will come into effect on June 17, 2017. Development charges are fees collected from developers and are a primary source of revenue to help pay for the cost of growth-related capital infrastructure including water, wastewater, roads, transit, the Toronto-York Subway extension, police, paramedics, waste diversion, courts and public health services. The purpose of Bylaw No. 2017-35 is to fund growth-related capital costs for The Regional Municipality of York. This Region-wide development charge bylaw will apply to all lands in The Regional Municipality of York with the exception of wastewater development charges for the Village of Nobleton. The Village of Nobleton’s wastewater development charges are levied under an area-specific development charge bylaw (No. 2016-40). The map below illustrates the location to which the bylaw applies.

The pair previously created a geolocation app to connect trade show exhibitors with attendees. Quote This Project has taken off and is now available in Canada, the U.S., UK, Australia and it will soon be in France. It has also caught the attention of the folks at CBC’s Dragons’ Den. DiStefano and Li auditioned for a spot and were among roughly 150 entrepreneurs, out of about 3,500, chosen to appear on Season 12, airing this fall, he said. "When we were giving our first pitch at our audition, the producer said, ’Where have you been all my life.’ They downloaded it right in front of us and posted a project," DiStefano recalled. He’s sworn to secrecy about what happened on their episode, but says it was "a great learning process on how to speak to venture capitalists." Their focus now is on expanding where the app is available. "In the end, we want this to be the standard practice for any homeowner getting their projects completed." Does the thought of trying to find a reputable handyman to renovate your outdated bathroom or build you a new deck fill you with dread? Ross DiStefano knows that feeling. He went through something similar and thought there must be a better way. The experience spurred the Vaughan resident to develop a smartphone app dubbed Quote This Project. Launched in the GTA two months ago, it boasts thousands of active users and has 270 tradespeople signed up to tackle projects ranging from kitchen and bathroom renovations to lawn mowing and roof repair, among many others. "It’s a very simple idea and we’re going to take it and revolutionize the way people are getting projects done in their homes today," DiStefano, 43, said. How simple is it? Step 1: Download the free app and complete your profile. Step 2: Post an image and a description of your project. Step 3: Wait for quotes to roll in from tradespeople.
Step 4: Sort through the contractors’ bids and invite the ones you feel can meet your budget and timeline to meet with you. The tradespeople bidding on your project pay $19.99 monthly to gain access to customer postings. "On the tradesperson’s side, he no longer has to waste his time going around quoting everything that has a pulse," said DiStefano, who moved into the tech field about six years ago after many years as a landscaper. DiStefano came up with the idea after struggling to find someone to install patio stones in his yard. He and friend Tony Bonnelo were halfway through the installation when DiStefano had to leave town for work. His wife, Margaret, suggested putting out a call on Facebook for someone to finish the job. A few responses trickled in, but no one could meet his timeline. "Tony said, ’Why don’t you create an app to automate the process so it goes to those who can meet the timeline and (the app) was born,’" DiStefano recalled. He developed Quote This Project with business partner Dmitri Li of Thornhill.

WHO WILL RAISE YOUR CHILDREN IF TRAGEDY STRIKES? The Wills Lawyer The following story is from the book “Where There’s An Inheritance”, written by Les Kotzer and Barry Fish. Rebecca and Kevin had two children aged six and eight at the time they made their wills. They decided to name Rebecca’s sister, Pamela and her husband, Herb, as guardians of their children. Rebecca and Kevin trusted Pamela and Herb to the ends of the earth. Less than a year after making their wills and appointing Pamela and Herb as their guardians, an accident claimed the lives of both Rebecca and Kevin. The provisions of their wills now meant that Pamela and Michelle Kotzer Herb were to be guardians of the two young children. As devastating as the loss of their parents was for these two children, there was even more bad news in store for them. A few months after the two children had settled in to live with Pamela and Herb, Pamela caught Herb having an extramarital affair. Now a nasty divorce was placing the children of Rebecca and Kevin right in the heat of the battle between their aunt and their uncle. Herb unexpectedly raised the stakes in his negotiations with Pamela by claiming custody of Rebecca and Kevin’s children. The fight was bitter. Pamela and Herb had no children of their own, and Pamela accused Herb of using his young niece and nephew as pawns in his battle to extort a better settlement from her. For months, the children seemed to be at risk of having to move out from their aunt Pamela’s home. Pamela ultimately obtained custody of her niece and nephew, but the divorce was both expensive and stressful. If only Rebecca and Kevin had named Pamela as sole guardian, and had not mentioned Herb, Pamela’s little niece and nephew would have been spared a great deal of the pain and suffering they had to endure. To Pamela, it was clear that, if her sister Rebecca could have seen how Herb had abused her trust, and used her two young children as pawns, she would have been horrified. In my wills practice, I see many couples with young children. The discussion of who to appoint as guardian in case both spouses are killed in an accident, is a difficult one. As I once mentioned in a previous article, I do not know how parents with young children can sleep at night without a will appointing a guardian. The person you appoint as guardian will raise your children until they reach the age of 18. Deciding who to appoint as guardian of your children if you pass away is a difficult task, and you should give great thought as to who you are appointing. As the story above illustrates, if for example, you are appointing your sister as guardian, it may be prudent to only appoint her and not her husband. Alternatively, if you are appointing your brother, the same thinking applies. Moreover, some people name the same person as both executor and guardian in their wills. This combination could lead to a potential conflict of interest. It may be prudent to appoint a different guardian than executor in your will. By separating your guardian from your executor, you are establishing checks and balances within the administration of your estate. It is important to remember that the guardian you have named in your will may not accept his or her appointment as guardian once you have passed away. It is important to tell your proposed guardian of your intention to appoint him or her in your will. You should also consider appointing a back-up guardian in the event your primary guardian does not accept the appointment when you pass away.
