da, said he has been perplexed by the killings since they took place in June, mostly because of its deviations from past mob hits.

Friends and family are paying tribute to “beautiful soul” Garrett Lewis, days after his body was pulled from Lake Huron after drowning while on holiday near a vacation spot with his family. According to media reports, family members and onlookers tried desperately to save the former Woodbridge resident after he was pulled out into rough waters last Thursday as heavy winds swirled near the Saugeen First Nation, north of Southampton. It was Sunday morning when OPP divers recovered his body, to the horror of residents who have witnessed four deaths on those shores over the past few years. The 23-year-old had been planning to attend a Knox Presbyterian Church overnight camp as a counsellor for the last week of the summer before going back to Carleton University, where he was studying civil engineering. Members of his church, Conerstone Community Church, in Kleinburg, had high praise for a young man who they said dedicated much of his time to helping others. “This week, our church lost a

It was only last year when York Regional Police arrested Maurice Beckles for breaking into homes in the region and stealing thousands worth of goods. He was convicted and spent about three months in jail. In April this year, police discovered another break and enter trend in Richmond Hill, Markham and Vaughan, where high-end homes were being targeted. After spending about three months investigating the situation, between April and July, police say they discovered Beckles was involved again. It was on July 21 when police moved in for another arrest after officers claim he and his alleged gang — GMC, Get Money Commission — were in Toronto pawning jewelry stolen from local homes. The way the alleged group worked was simple enough: they would knock on doors between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., when most people were at work. If they received no response, they would pry or simply shoulder open the front door. Police said the men then went straight to the master bedroom, where they would plunder jewelry and even safes, which they would simply bring back to their base and break open. In all, about 38 homes were burgled, with many also happening in Toronto, south Simcoe, Mississauga and Brampton, where many of the accused live. Police believe the number of victims is much higher and are asking people to contact them to report the incidents and help find owners for the recovered goods. Car rental vehicles with stolen licence plates were used in the break-ins, with the thieves escaping via Hwy. 407 afterwards, investigators claimed. As soon as they were able, the gold would be pawned, sometimes melted down so it couldn’t be identified, police added. Some of the gold may have also been melted down to make $60,000

A loaded gun with four bullets in the chamber was also discovered during the raids, along with costume jewelry that police say the thieves were unable to melt down. The gun is being examined to see if it has been shot recently and where it might have come from. Det. Sgt. Don Cardwell, who headed up the investigation, said the probe began after police spotted the burglars using brand new cars with stolen licence plates. After realizing they were likely rentals, he said it was down to “good old-fashioned” police work to nab the men. However he added that the battle against these alleged gangs continue. “There are about 20 of these guys, they all interchange and mingle,” he said. “The medallions they wear represent their lifestyle. They get money, this is a lucrative business and they lead a lavish lifestyle. It signifies just how successful they are.” He also took a swipe at the courts, who he said give relatively low prison sentences to offenders. “These victims feel violated, while the courts see it as a property offence,” he said. “They don’t see the trauma it causes families. We need the support of the courts. Sometimes it takes us longer to investigate these crimes than these men are getting in sentences.” The men charged include 32-year-old Jordan Saccucci of Mississauga, 32-year-old Maurice Beckles of Brampton, 32-year-old Harun Murad of Mississauga and 24-yearold Jamaar Taylor are facing a total of 65 charges. Those include break and enter and possession of property by crime. Organizer of medical supply drive seeks additional funds By Adam Martin-Robbins

amartinrobbins@yrmg.com

Klaudiusz Stoklosa’s dream is to become a surgeon, but the 20-year-old McGill University student isn’t waiting until he graduates from medical school to start saving lives. Earlier this summer, Stoklosa organized a medical-supplies drive at his church, St. David’s Parish in Maple, to gather much-needed items for two medical clinics serving impoverished areas of Guatemala. Now, he’s raising money to cover the cost of shipping the supplies through an online fundraising site: http://www.gofundme.com/ saludparaguatemala But he’s not stopping there. The Maple resident is aiming to have an even greater impact on the health and wellbeing of people living in poverty-stricken communities of the Central American country. In addition to raising funds to cover the shipping costs, he’s hoping to garner enough money to purchase two water treatment units that would help eliminate waterborne illnesses, a major problem in rural areas of the country. “I think a lot of good will come out of this,” said Stoklosa, a former St. Robert Catholic High School student. The third-year science student spent three weeks in June volunteering at two medical clinics in the communities of Santiago and Santa Lucia, Guatemala. His aim was to get hands-on experience, which he did in spades by shadowing doctors, doing triage work and administering vaccines. But he also got something he didn’t expect - a real wake-up call. When he returned home and began shadowing surgeons at Toronto’s Sunnybrook Hospital, Stoklosa was struck by the differences between health care in Canada and Guatemala. “In the Guatemalan clinics that I worked at there were no gloves, supplies were very limited, things were very dirty,” he said.

Klaudiusz Stoklosa, right, with Father Ernie De Ciccio of St. David’s Parish at the church in Maple. “In the bathroom, there was no toilet paper and I go to wash my hands and there was no soap. That was the staff bathroom. “I was always thinking how can I help them and seeing that difference really did spur it.” The stark contrast combined with a conversation he had with Dr. George Christakis, a cardiac surgeon he shadowed at Sunnybrook, inspired Stoklosa to try to help. His initial plan was just to do a medical-supplies drive to support the two clinics he’d volunteered at. After contacting Maximo Nivel, one of the agencies that facilitated his volunteer mission in Guatemala, and getting the OK he approached Fr. Ernie De Ciccio at St. David’s. He told Stoklosa the church has done these types of drives before and they were quite successful, so Stoklosa went ahead. He went out and bought a single bin in hopes of collecting enough supplies: gauze, medical exam gloves, face masks, children’s vitamins, among other things, to stock one or two medical clinics. That goal was far surpassed. “I didn’t think I was going to fill up that one box and I was surprised just how much good is in people’s

hearts and how they’ve answered the call. We probably have enough for six or seven clinics,” said Stoklosa, noting he owes a great deal of thanks to his sister Michelle and his parents who’ve been immensely supportive. He gives a lot of credit for the overwhelming response to the staff at St. David’s Parish who spread the word. “We are blessed with so much it makes us feel good when we can share with those that have less,” De Ciccio said. But that overwhelming success presented a new challenge: how to ship heaps of medical supplies to Guatemala without spending hundreds of dollars. Like so many people these days, Stoklosa turned to the Internet and launched an online fundraising campaign to raise the money he needed to cover the shipping costs. Then he decided to aim even higher. After doing some research, Stoklosa upped his fundraising target to $1,600, enough to cover the shipping costs and to buy two LifeStraw Community water filters, which can purify more than 100,000 litres of water, removing bacteria, protozoan cysts, and viruses. “When I did the drive, in the back of my mind I thought this is very useful but in the medical field you want to stop things from happening. When I was there (in Guatemala) a lot of people came in with waterborne illnesses so you want to go and prevent it,” he said. “Once you cleanse the water, it means people aren’t getting sick with these totally preventable illnesses.” Given the incredible response to his medical supplies drive, Stoklosa is optimistic that the fundraising campaign will be successful too. “I have a lot of faith in this community,” he said. If you want to support the fundraising effort, visit gofundme.com/saludparaguatemala or email klaudiusz_stoklosa@rogers. com

TIM KELLY

tkelly@yrmg.com

The race for the KingVaughan riding is starting to heat up. Late last week, Liberal candidate Deb Schulte attacked the Conservatives over the ongoing trial of former Conservative senator Mike Duffy. “As the Mike Duffy trial continues to dominate the headlines, it is clear that the Prime Minister’s Office puts the interests of the Conservative Party ahead of being accountable to Canadians,” Schulte said in a statement. “As a regional councillor, I worked to improve accountability at City Hall, resulting in millions of tax dollars saved, instituting an employee ‘tip line’ and developing measurements to drive performance. I want to put my record of proven results and a Liberal plan for open and transparent government to work cleaning up Ottawa.” Mike Duffy, appointed by Prime Minister Stephen Harper in 2008, is on trial for accepting a $90,172 cheque for expenses owed for his housing allowance from Harper’s former chief of staff, Nigel Wright. Harper has told Canadians he didn’t know the intimate details surrounding the payment to Duffy. Wright revealed in court last week Harper’s current chief of staff, Ray Novak, the PM’s principal secretary at the time of the payment, may have been aware of the deal. Novak’s involvement was confirmed in testimony by Harper’s lawyer, Benjamin Perrin. Harper has said he believed only Wright and Duffy should be held accountable for the payment to Duffy. Duffy has pleaded not guilty to 31 charges, including bribery, fraud and breach of trust.

Deb Schulte (Liberal) and Konstantin Toubis (Conservative) are among those seeking the King-Vaughan seat. “A Liberal government will bring positive change to Ottawa and restore trust in our democracy,” Schulte said. “When it comes to the Senate, both Stephen Harper and Thomas Mulcair have cynically proposed solutions they know are unworkable. Liberals have a credible plan to end partisanship and patronage in the Senate. The Liberal plan will create a merit-based appointment process and ensure more free votes for parliamentary committees, resulting in greater independence, allowing Canadians a voice in Ottawa. Liberals will also make government information more open to all Canadians, eliminating the fees associated with access to information requests, above the initial $5 filing fee, and ensure the veil of secrecy over the Prime Minister’s Office is lifted. “It is clear that Canadians deserve better, providing a more accountable government and ending the secrecy and scandals are clear priorities for me and for the Liberal Party. A better government is a core promise of my campaign and one that voters can have confidence I will deliver on, given my past record of results at city sall,” Schulte concluded. Conservative candidate Konstantin Toubis, in response to Schulte’s comments, replied: “I am running as part of Prime Minister

Stephen Harper’s Conservative team because I believe he is the leader with the proven experience we need to guide us through lingering global economic uncertainty and very real threats to our national security. My Liberal opponent, on the other hand, is running with her leader Justin, whose plan for Canada’s $1.9-trillion economy is to grow it – in his words – ‘from the heart outwards.’ What does that mean? It means he is just not ready. This is the same person who has admired China’s communist dictatorship as a system of government. He is profoundly unserious. He is not a leader. “That’s why he has already vowed to raise taxes on all Canadian families. It is why he has hitched his wagon to dangerous schemes of the scandal-plagued government of (Ontario Premier) Kathleen Wynne. Yes, Justin thinks Kathleen Wynne has it all figured out. From sex education to soaring hydro rates to wasted billions for nothing to her most recent stroke of Liberal brilliance: a payroll tax hike that will kill jobs and cost Ontario families. For a worker in KingVaughan making $60,000, the Trudeau-Wynne payroll tax will take an additional $1,000 from your take-home pay. It will mean a pay cut of 4 per cent per year every year for the rest of your career. And if you happen to be 45 or older now, you’ll get nothing back when you retire. “Should I be fortunate enough to be elected, my primary responsibility is to represent the needs of my community, each and every one of the citizens of King-Vaughan. By doing this, I hope to earn their respect and be voted back into office. Otherwise, I would, of course, expect to be fired for lack of performance in the next election.”

HOT TOPIC

Thanks for the notice, politicians

rime Minister Stephen Harper was in York Region last week for a public event in King Township. What’s that? You didn’t hear about the visit? Well, you’re not alone. The media release indicating Harper and local Conservative candidates Peter Van Loan (York-Simcoe) and Lois Brown (Newmarket-Aurora) were going to speak at WaterStone Estate & Farms on Dufferin Street, Aug. 20 at 10 a.m. (media was to be onsite by 9 a.m.) was emailed by the Conservative Party National Campaign and delivered to a York Region Media Group reporter’s account at 10:59 p.m. Aug. 19. There are certainly logistical issues to address when arranging a visit by the country’s leader — his time is very limited and there’s always a chance he gets called off to something else, so sometimes there’s a reluctance to make a commitment until organizers are confident there will be no changes — but giving 10 overnight hours of notice certainly gives the impression the public event wasn’t meant to be public at all. Doesn’t the Conservative campaign team want coverage from local news outlets? Don’t party members want the general public to come out and hear Harper’s message? It doesn’t seem so. It seems Harper is content to not only handpick the media that get access to him, but also the members of the public who are welcome to take part. How many people do you know who could find out about an event at 11 p.m. one night, be able to do everything necessary to clear their schedule overnight, when the majority of the province is sleeping, and be in attendance at 9 a.m.? How many people do you know who would even try? Van Loan and Brown have much better records when it comes to media/public invites. For example, on Sept. 5 at 3:10 p.m., Van Loan’s office issued a release that he would be making a GO Transit facility announcement in East Gwillim-

vaughan CITIZE

bury at 10 a.m. Sept. 8. Then, Oct. 10 at 2:03 p.m., Van Loan’s office issued an email about a Georgina Ice Palace announcement Oct. 15 at 10:30 a.m. Brown also understands the importance of providing notice. Her Nov. 8 announcement about the citizen coffee and tea with the MP program was issued at 11 a.m. Nov. 6. That means the media and public were given a minimum of two days notice for a coffee and tea event, but a visit by the PM merits only 10 hours. Perhaps Harper could learn a thing or two from his area MPs. But we’re not picking on Harper, here. The fact of the matter is, he’s the only federal party leader, so far, since the election has been called, to make a campaign stop in the region, although rumour had it Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau was to be in Newmarket yesterday morning, but, as of Tuesday at noon, there was no official release. What’s even more worrisome is this recent trend isn’t isolated to federal politics. Ontario Liberal Premier Kathleen Wynne was in Newmarket Aug. 20 to announce a provincial investment of more than $224,000 to Special Olympics Ontario for the Partners in Play program. The project, according to a media release, will introduce young special needs athletes to sports such as track and field, basketball, soccer and swimming. Unfortunately, the aforementioned media release was sent after the actual announcement took place and was simply a recap of the day’s event. There was no advance notice to the media that Wynne would be in the area. Those politicians who appear to be attempting to control the media and the message have to realize their efforts only make it look as though they have something to hide.

BOTTOM LINE: Now that the campaign is in full swing, citizens deserve to know who is coming to town and media should have opportunity to ask questions.

Province, not unions to blame for financial mess

GET CONNECTED

Re: Lock out teachers, break union, Sunday Forum opinion by Rod Urquhart, Aug. 23, yorkregion.com. Yes, Urquhart, I agree my union should be busted. I mean, the financial mess Ontario is in is certainly a result of the decisions and actions my union and I decided to undertake. Let’s look at what I am responsible for: 1. eHealth 2. Ornge 3. Moving gas plants for an election 4. The $1.4-billion dollar Windsor Parkway 5. Financial mismanagement of the GM and Chrysler bailout. I really hope we get all of our money back. 6. Deciding to bring the PAN Am games to Toronto, causing the budget to balloon and then paying $7 million bonuses to 64 executives. I really hope we make an Olympic bid! 7. Creating a bloated bureaucracy in education: we certainly need more consultants.

Also, I have many, many adult friends whose children had to go overseas to teach. Wait, I guess that’s a result of the faculties of education not capping enrolment. Why turn down thousands of dollars in tuition, right? I think you see my point. The mismanagement of Ontario’s finances do not lie on the backs of people in my profession. Corruption and mismanagement at the provincial level is to blame. I would invite you to research further into the issues that I and my colleagues have with the province right now. Oh, by the way, I know many, many teachers that would be in favour of yearround schooling. The tired line of “summer’s off” ... that’s a ministry decision.

An Ottawa-based non-profit organization has stepped up to help a Vaughan family locked in a legal battle they fear will leave them bankrupt. Canadians for Properly Built Homes established a trust fund at the Scotiabank branch at Weston Road and Rutherford Road, (Account number: 07286 04049 85) for anyone who would like donate to the Walters family. “We wanted to let the Walters family know they are not alone, that somebody cares, and there are others out there going through similar situations,” said Karen Somerville, president of the CPBH, which aims to increase consumer awareness about building standards and push for greater protections. The trust fund was set up after The Toronto Star published a story about the Woodbridge family last week. The Walters’, whose struggles have been chronicled in the Vaughan Citizen since 2012, are locked in a legal fight with the City of Vaughan and builder Villa Royale over who is responsible for missing insulation in their home’s attic, which led to a build up of mould

and forced them to leave out of concern for their health. Sydney Walters is living with his wife and their teenage son in a cramped one-bedroom apartment they’ve been renting while continuing to pay the mortgage for their mould-infested house. He says the situation is pushing them into poverty and could wind up costing them their home. “We will never recover and I don’t see an end in sight,” he said. Walters, who says he’s nearly $200,000 in debt, is thankful for the community’s support. He says any funds would go to help pay his mortgage and overhead costs — to ensure he can prevent his home from being repossessed by the bank. And he’s still waiting for a call from Vaughan Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua. “I am pleading to the mayor to personally get involved, and see that this matter is settled,” he said. — With files by Noor Javed, Torstar News Network

beautiful soul,” June Looi posted on her Facebook account. “You were always so kind, funny and courageous. You’re the most genuine and kind-hearted person I’ve ever met in my life. You will forever be missed and never forgotten.” Tyler Moore further praised his friend, saying he’ll never take for granted the memories contained in the photographs he still has of he and Lewis. “RIP buddy,” he wrote. “You were by far one of the best human beings I’ve ever heard of, let alone had the pleasure of knowing.” A fellow counsellor shared a story on the Knox church Facebook page that she felt encapsulated Lewis. “I will never forget walking into the gym in the morning and seeing five campers hanging off his shoulders, laughing and smiling with joy,” Michelle Quaye wrote. “Garrett’s kindness was evident to all who knew him; he showed us all what God’s love looks like. My prayers to Garrett’s family.” “A true friend that I will always miss and never forget,” Chris Rodriguez added. “I’ll always remember the good times and the way you carried yourself as a man. Watch over me bro.” Alvin Kim, the director of the family ministry at Knox, echoed the tributes, explaining just how little Lewis ever seemed to worry about himself, instead focusing on others. “He was sacrificial,

giving with his time and energy. If someone needed him, he would have been there,” he said. “He was a fantastic young man and we’re all very sorrowful that we’ve lost him. He thought of others before himself, constantly just serving and exerting himself 100 per cent. A big part of his story was his faith. It made him who he was and he lived it in words and deeds.” He added that the campers will spend days paying tribute to his memory at camp and said his thoughts are with Lewis’ parents and younger brother. Only two weeks before the tragic incident, Troy Patterson, editor of the Kincardine News, wrote an editorial calling for the erection of a memorial near to the Kincardine pier to act as a tribute and a reminder to those swimming in the area. He also suggested that photographs be mounted on the memorial. “It’s a human way of looking at it,” he said. “When you see their faces, you realize these people have families.” It’s unclear if Lewis’ death will put a greater emphasis on safety in the area, where, Patterson added, southwest winds can cause dangerous conditions, including a powerful riptide. Three weeks before Lewis’ death Lucas Johnson, 16, from Goderich died in the area.

remains unsure if the incident is tied to gambling, he said people linked to the ‘Ndrangheta are buying up cafes, bars and social clubs in Vaughan in an attempt to corner the market on illegal gambling in York Region. “Gambling is a major issue now,” he said. “If this is one of those cases, I understand the attempt to scare or to do something against an owner who is against selling his bar. But when you see a guy enter and start shooting randomly, it just doesn’t make sense.” Nicaso said the only way for police to understand why he did what he did is to cut a deal with the suspect, trading jail time and protection for information about who, if anyone, is responsible for the hit. “Only this guy can make clear his actions and motives if he collaborates with police,” he added, noting this might be the only way to understand the motive. Nicaso also explained that while the mob does usually hire hit men to carry out violence, similar to what Vaughan witnessed on that morning, they usually take on discreet, professional killers. “There’s a tradition of hiring people outside the organization,” Nicaso said, however he questioned whether the suspect, considering his background, fits this mould. “This guy seems to be very unprofessional. How can they hire someone like this? It’s really strange, he looked so disorganized.”

He said some of the anomalies include the fact the main suspect just got out of prison after serving seven years for manslaughter, was well known to police and was allegedly still answering his cellphone after the murder. The suspect’s image was also captured on video footage only days before the murder. Nicaso also suggested the mafia is very conscious of bringing undo scrutiny to their activities, something shooting four people in the middle of a morning commute, near a busy intersection, would most certainly do. “You want to leave a message, but you don’t want to leave behind two dead and two injured,” he said. “I don’t know who hired this guy, but he proved himself unprofessional and not the person capable to carry out an assignment like this. Terrorists needs the media and attention. The mafia, however, wants to send messages, but remain under the radar.” Although police have acknowledged the crime was “targeted”, there’s no word on who was the intended target and or the motive for the shooting. The force has admitted illegal gambling was taking place at the Moka Cafe. In addition to Hay, police also charged Mississauga resident Tashari Bennett, 25, with accessory after the fact and breach of recognizance. York police did not reply to requests for comment.

Youth Guide 2015 Diego Maradona Soccer Academy South American/European Year Round Soccer Training

www.diegomaradonasocceracademy.com

Today’s students arguably have more on their plates than any generation that came before them. But even with their hectic schedules, kids still have free time, which many are not always using in the healthiest ways possible. Many high school students play video games or computer games for three or more hours on an average school day. Sedentary lifestyles can increase kids’ risk for being overweight or obese, and many parents struggle in their efforts to encourage their school-aged children to get off the couch and embrace physical activities. The following are a handful of strategies concerned parents can employ as they attempt to motivate youngsters to be more physically active.

Fall/Winter 2015-2016 Indoor Soccer Training for ages 3-15 begins September 29th in Woodbridge. Call (647) 291-8297 or visit our website for more information or to register!

Choose the right activity Physical activity and organized sports are not one and the same. Kids can still be physically active even if they are not athletic or if they are simply not interested in sports. Find an activity kids can embrace, such as hiking, swimming or even riding bikes, and they will be more likely to get off the couch.

Limit screen time Kids spend lots of time in front of computer and television screens, which can be detrimental to their overall health. Parents can place restrictions on the amount of time kids are allowed to spend surfing the Internet, playing video games and watching television, encouraging youngsters to spend time enjoying the great outdoors or playing with friends rather than spending it staring at a screen .

Classrooms conducive to learning may go a long way toward helping students understand the subjects they study in school, but the environment kids encounter at home also plays a big role in how well kids do in their studies. A homework-friendly atmosphere at home can facilitate learning, and there are many ways parents can create such an environment for their school-aged children. • Designate a homework zone in a distractionfree area of your home. Some youngsters are easily distracted, and those distractions come in many forms. A living room where the television is blaring, a noisy kitchen where dinner is being prepared and a room where pets can roam free are not ideal homework areas, as each can take kids’ attention away from their assignments. Designate a room in your home that is quiet and well lit so kids can do their homework free from distraction. • Choose the right location for the homework room. When choosing an area of your home where kids will do their homework, avoid rooms adjacent to the kitchen and living room, as these rooms tend to be popular and subject to heavy foot traffic. But don’t choose a room that’s too far away from the hustle and bustle, such as the basement, as that may make kids feel as though they are being punished. In addition, you want

to be able to periodically check in on kids to see if they need help and make sure they aren’t spending their homework time surfing the Internet or procrastinating. • Keep the homework room clean. A cluttered homework room may be less appealing to children, and such disorganization also can distract kids from the tasks at hand. Encourage kids to keep their homework rooms clean, and help them clean up if need be. Supplies and other items kids need should be easily accessible in the homework room so kids are not wasting time looking for items they need to complete their homework. • Let kids rest or relax before starting their homework. Another element of a good homework atmosphere is letting kids unwind between getting home from school and cracking open the books. A break between school and homework time can help kids focus better on their studies. In the interim between arriving home from school and starting on their homework, give kids a healthy snack that can provide an extra jolt of energy they can use once they start their homework. • Evaluate how the homework zone is working. Once an ample amount of time has passed, examine how kids are performing on their homework assignments. If they are doing well, then there is no reason to break up the current routine. If they are struggling, ask them if there is anything about the current setup they dislike and address those issues accordingly. Kids rarely look forward to doing their homework. But the right atmosphere can make homework seem like less of a chore and more of an opportunity for kids to apply themselves.

How to make school lunch healthier The benefits of a healthy diet are clear and well documented. In addition to providing the nutrients a growing body needs, consuming a balanced diet helps children maintain a healthy weight. Obesity continues to be a growing problem among school-aged children and can contribute to the onset of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol, and many other adverse medical conditions. Children attending school will eat at least one meal away from home each day. A healthy lunch provides sound nutrition to give students energy

to do well in school and for the rest of the day. Children who do not eat well at lunch may have difficulty concentrating, while others may feel sluggish or tired. Canada is one of the few leading industrialized countries that does not have a national nutrition strategy to implement healthy school lunches. It’s estimated that only 10 to 15 percent of Canadian children have access to school meals. These meals are not provided by a well-funded national program, but by a patchwork of individual volunteer efforts, some provincial government funding and

corporate donations. Whether students purchase lunch from school or bring lunch from home, there are ways to guarantee a more diverse offering and better nutrition. Here are some guidelines to follow. • Offer nutrient-dense foods. Foods should contribute to the daily recommended amounts of protein, iron, calcium, vitamin A, and vitamin C. Provide a selection of foods, such as lean protein, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, that will give children the nutrients they need. Nutrientdense foods also help kids feel fuller, longer. • Limit fat intake. Avoid foods that do not get their fat from polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats. Saturated fats can lead to obesity and clogged arteries. The American Heart Association recommends kids get no more than 25 to 35 percent of their calories from fat. Fish, nuts and olives are healthy fat sources. • Let kids choose some of their food. Allow kids to pick some of the healthy foods they will be eating. Giving kids a say in their diets will make them more likely to enjoy their lunches and cut back on snack foods. Eating meals regularly will

keep energy levels up during school and make kids less likely to reach for unhealthy snacks to fill hunger gaps. • Make small changes that add up. Switching from white bread to whole grain breads, and opting for low-fat dairy products instead of fullfat dairy products can make a world of difference. Kids may not notice a change in texture or flavour, and many of kids’ favourite foods, such as chicken nuggets, pizza and macaroni and cheese, can be made with healthier ingredients. • Remember, beverages count, too. Giving children a healthy lunch and then packing a sugar-filled, high-calorie drink negates your efforts. Calories from beverages can quickly add up. Water is always the best option for a healthy drink. Low-fat milk and real fruit juice consumed in moderation also make healthy alternatives to sugary beverages. Offering healthy school lunches is an important step to raising healthy kids. New guidelines and offerings make it easier for kids to get the nutrition they need for their growing bodies.

Youth Guide 2015 School is much more than a place where students gather to learn. Lessons learned in school go beyond mathematics and language arts. Students learn to cultivate individual interests and find other people who share their interests. Music is one of the ways like-minded children come together. When many people talk about the benefits of music education, they’re quick to point out all of the quantitative and measurable results of that music education. For instance, numerous studies have shown the positive impact music programs can have on children in other areas of study.

Dr. Laurel Trainor, a professor of psychology, neuroscience and behaviour at McMaster University, has said that young children who take music lessons show different brain development and improved memory compared to children who do not receive musical training. Stanford University researchers have found that musical training improves how the brain processes the spoken word, a finding that researchers say could lead to improving the reading ability of children who have dyslexia and other reading problems. Other studies point out that secondary students

who report consistent involvement in instrumental music during middle school and high school perform significantly better in mathematics by grade 12 than those who do not participate in music programs. There are many reasons why music education can help to make a child a better student, but there also are other benefits that go beyond the classroom environment. Being involved in music also is a social endeavour, and music education can set the course for lifelong friends and help create social groups that last through school and beyond.

Music education breeds familiarity during a school career, when going from class to class or from school to school every year can be nervewracking and unfamiliar. Walking inside of a band room, whether in elementary school or high school, can create a sense of belonging. It is also a place where students not involved in sports or other activities can gather. While not every child will go on to be the next great musical sensation, thanks to music education at school, he or she will have learned less

#1 SELLING SUV IN CANADA FOR THE PAST 8 YEARS (2007–2014)Ω

Timothy Barlow It’s All Good

No more excuses

I think it’s fair to say that most of us have at least one area of our lives that we wish we could improve or change, and if we really told the truth, we’ve been wishing it for a very long time. Yet, rather than simply making that change, many of us can get trapped in an eddy of justifications instead, telling anyone who will listen all the reasons why we are in the situation we are in. We trade the end result we desire for sympathy instead, so that we can avoid what is probably the most important step to making things right again in our lives: Admitting we were wrong. As we watch the news and judge the mistakes of those we see splattered across our computers and televisions each day, what are we saying to ourselves as we watch? “Just admit it and apologize!” But they don’t, and the story keeps going on with more blame and more excuses. So why can we clearly see that their admission is vital in creating resolution yet struggle when it comes to applying it in our own? Benjamin Franklin once said: “Never ruin an apology with an excuse.” This is sage advice and I would highly recommend it when communicating with others, but I believe it also applies when we are looking in the mirror. Although your view of the world may be justified and feel right from the experiences of your past, it is also getting in the way of the future you say you want to live. Continuing to justify your perspective through those past experiences will only solidify more of those unwanted results in your future. There are many people living the life you say you want to live and it is most likely because they are seeing something that you do not. True change occurs when you can ask yourself one very important question. “Could I be wrong?” If you are brutally honest with yourself, chances are pretty good that the answer will be yes and if so, then simply look in the mirror and apologize. No reasons, no excuses and no justifications.

Action plan to improve mental health and addictions services An action plan in the works aims to tackle mental health and addictions issues in York Region. The plan will improve health and wellness, increase

is helping people navigate and understand the programs and services that are available to them within York Region and get the support they need to find and sustain stable and appropriate housing,” the LHIN said in a statement. “Research shows affordable housing has a strong impact on improving mental health, yet there is a severe shortage within York Region despite a large population of people with a dem-

onstrated need.” The LHIN brought together York Region officials, service providers, patients and families to develop the plan. There was also consultations with representatives of social and emergency housing, Emergency Medical Services, York Regional Police and the United Way. When the plan gets underway this fall, the first step will be to create a service

co-ordination council led by the Canadian Mental Health Association of York Region and South Simcoe. The council will focus on improving the integration, co-ordination and distribution of mental health and addictions services for transitional youth, exploring ways to improve patient and client services in the region and creating a one-stop resource to help people understand and navigate services, the LHIN said.

The Vaughan Vikings were hoping to field a medal at the U15 National Baseball Championships at Vaughan Grove Park, Sunday. What the championship hosts settled for though, was a fifth-place finish after they defeated British Columbia 13-5 in their battle for fifth and sixth places in the 11-team field. Trailing 3-2 through five innings, the Vikings erupted with seven runs in the sixth inning and four in the seventh to end the tournament on a positive note. Max Musyj tossed two innings of relief and struck out three batters while yielding no runs or hits to earn the win. Ethan Emile took the loss in relief for British Columbia, who had defeated the Vikings during the round-robin segment. Vikings’ left fielder Adam Raponi belted a three-run homer, while Justin Raspanti contributed a run-scoring double. Leadoff hitter Jalen Cooper, Mark Zanette and Ryan Capuano each had one hit and scored two runs, while Daniel Carinci, Connor Goldsmith and Justin Romeo each had one hit and scored one run. “It was a total team effort,” Vikings head coach Dirk Drieberg said of his club’s championship-ending win. “We were down in the fifth inning and we come back to get seven runs in the sixth. We responded.” The Vikings opened the tournament on a down note after suffering a 7-4 loss to Quebec on Thursday.

Facing eventual champion Ontario, represented by Mississauga North, in their second game Friday, the Vikings fell 20-3. Mississauga North beat Quebec 7-4 to win their second straight national title. Later that day, the Vikings rebounded to record their first victory of the championships after downing New Brunswick 11-5. But any hope for the Vikings to advance to the quarter-finals were dashed Saturday when they suffered a 6-2 loss to British Columbia in their final pool game, which gave them a 1-3 record and relegated them into playing for fifth place. “Any team on any given day can beat anyone else,” Drieberg said. “Any province can do well at a competition like this. The results speak to that.” “I’m still proud of how we performed for our league and the City of Vaughan.” While disappointed with the final outcome of his club, Drieberg, who also serves as president of the Vaughan Vikings baseball organization and one of the tournament organizers, was pleased with the manner in which this year’s event unfolded from an organizational standpoint. Once again, he was quick to credit a total team effort in seeing that the event ran efficiently. While the Boys U15 championships will not be played in Vaughan for at least the next two years. Instead, the Girls U16 National Baseball Championships will be held in Vaughan in its place during that timeframe.

FIND A BUYER’S AGENT. Real estate agents are often affiliated with sellers instead of buyer’s. This means their primary goal is to help the seller and not the buyer. When shopping around for a real estate agent, ask companies about their buyer’s agents. Buyers should always have someone with their interests in mind, and not the interests of the sellers. FIND SOMEONE WITH A TRACK RECORD. Real estate can be an exciting and financially rewarding industry in which to work. As a result, lots of people want to be real estate agents, even though few succeed and last a long time. When interviewing real estate agents, inquire about their history in the business. A more experienced agent will make things far less stressful and easier, and a long career indicates they are good at what they do. A real estate agent with a long history in the business will likely be a full-time agent as well. Prospective buyers should look for a full-time agent, which is not as common as some buyers might think. Many agents work part-time, and buyers could receive less attention as a result. DON’T PLACE TOO MUCH EMPHASIS ON AGENCY SIZE. Real estate agencies come in all shapes and sizes. When it comes to ability, the size of the agency should not factor in. A smaller independent agency can be just as qualified and reliable as one of the major franchise agencies. Buyers who find someone they trust should go with that person, regardless of how big or have previously purchased a home might small their agency is. already have a strong relationship with a GET A REFERRAL. real estate agent. But for those moving out of their current location or buying for Friends and family members who have been through the buying the first time, finding the right real estate process before might be great resources. Buyers looking in “Town agent requires some effort. Those in the X” who have friends or family already living there should consult market for an agent to help navigate the those friends or family and ask for any agent referrals. Those relocating because of work should ask their company to refer an home buying process should consider agent. Chances are companies have relocated employees in the the following tips. past and might have a strong relationship with an agency in town.

Finding a trustworthy and experienced real estate agent can help make the process of buying a home much less stressful.

How to Find the

RIGHT REAL ESTATE AGENT Buying a home is often a difficult thing to do. The stress of making such a big financial commitment is a struggle for many home buyers, whether they have purchased a home in the past or are doing so for the first time. One way to make the process a lot less anxiety-ridden is to work with a real estate agent you can trust. Those who

Canada’s Wonderland is launching two new high-flying rides next season that will send wannabe pilots soaring. Skyhawk, being billed as the first ride of its kind in North America, invites riders to strap themselves into their very own cockpit and showoff their flying skills at 41 metres (135 feet) above the ground. Flying Eagles is aimed at little pilots looking to get a

taste of soaring through the sky. The ride features twoperson planes with controls that glide 8.5 metres (28 feet) high. “We are always looking to enhance the guest experience with new and exciting attractions. With the introduction of Skyhawk and Flying Eagles, thrill-seekers of all ages will enjoy the flying sensation on

these interactive rides that are truly unique to our Park.” Norm Pirtovshek, general manager at Canada’s Wonderland said in a news release Thursday. To coincide with the new ride announcement, Canada’s Wonderland has launched a limited time offer on 2016 season passes, priced at $67.99. For more information visit canadaswonderland.com.

Bill de Peuter was positive, selfless resident By Brea Bartholet

bbartholet@yrmg.com

O

n July 9, Bradford West Gwillimbury lost one if its most instrumental figures. Bill de Peuter — the last mayor of Bradford, and the first of the amalgamated Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury in 1991 — was diagnosed with meningitis before he passed away at the age of 81. Growing up in Almkerk, Netherlands as the oldest of 13 children, de Peuter was eager to start a new life in Canada following some very major and devastating flooding in 1953. In May 1954, de Peuter, his siblings and parents, John and Catharina, chose to settle near the Holland Marsh in Springdale, experiencing the impact of Hurricane Hazel only months later, uprooting the family’s home from its foundation and causing it to float near an area along Hwy. 400. Though the terrifying storm proved a challenge for the new Canadians, the de Peuters chose to rebuild their life within the community they now called home. In 1957, de Peuter met the woman of his dreams, Rita, to whom he was happily married for 57 years. The two lived in the marsh for a 18 months after getting married, eventually choosing to move into the small, bustling town of Bradford.

Bill de Peuter was the last mayor of Bradford and the first of the amalgamated Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury. Staying connected to the community was key for de Peuter. In the early 1960s, he joined his brothers and dad in opening a painting business — John de Peuter and Sons Ltd.

His involvement also extended beyond the family business. de Peuter was passionate about his presence with the Rotary Club of Bradford and served with local police services boards, the Hol-

Cathy explained. It was in the fall of 1978 that he decided he could make a big difference in the community and chose to begin his political career. He first ran for public office in Bradford and was elected as councillor. In 1983, he stepped into the position of deputy reeve, followed by mayor of Bradford in 1986, where he became BWG’s first mayor and served his term until the following election. Unfortunately, the early 1990s brought on illness for de Peuter. In 1994, he was diagnosed with kidney failure. Thankfully, he underwent a successful transplant surgery once it was discovered his sister, Cathy, was a positive match. Following that, de Peuter retired from the family business to focus on an active life through other community initiatives. With vast knowledge of construction, he put himself to work in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to assist with flood recovery in 2008. It was just one of the many positive and selfless acts de Peuter took part in throughout his life. In his remaining years, he spent time traveling between Bradford, Barrie and the family winter residence in Florida until he returned home in January for the last time. de Peuter is survived by his wife, Rita, five daughters, four sons-in-law, 15 grandchildren, one great grandson and 12 siblings.
