CAA charging station to give York drivers jolt by Kim Zarzour

kzarzour@yrmg.com

Cars that are emission-free just got one step closer to being worry-free in York Region with a new charging station located in Thornhill. CAA South Central Ontario has installed the vehicle charging post in the parking lot of the association’s head office at 60 Commerce Valley Drive East. Electric vehicle owners can charge up at no cost on the dual

level II charger installed this summer by Siemens Canada. Teresa Di Felice, the CAA director of government and community relations, hopes it will reassure those considering buying an electric car that the infrastructure will be there to keep the vehicles on the road. “Alternative fuel vehicles help reduce the impact of driving on the environment. Having our own electric vehicle shows our members we are leading the way in accept-

ing new technologies,” Ms Di Felice said. Located in an business industrial area near Hwy 404, the charger will provide peace of mind to drivers who attend meetings in the area, she said. There are about seven publicly available chargers in York Region, she said. A map provided by Plug’nDrive Ontario, which is in process of being updated, includes locations at Maple Nissan in Vaughan, Rich-

mond Hill town hall, Markham Mitsubishi, Richmond Hill Mitsubishi, Windfall Ecology Centre and NewRoads Chevrolet Cadillac Buick GMC. An app is being created to help drivers find locations across the country with the help of the CAA, Plug’nDrive and Electric Mobility Canada. The South Central Ontario head office has also added a Nissan Leaf electric vehicle to its corporate fleet to be used by employees for corpo-

rate events, conferences and offsite meetings. A blog, Life-side Connections on the association’s website caasco.com, helps electric car drivers understand what it’s like to drive an alternative vehicle, while CAA Insurance offers a 5-per-cent discount to policy holders who own an electric vehicle or a hybrid. For more information on electric vehicles and a map showing publicly available charging stations, visit plugndrive.ca

Ontario has sunk to last place in Canada with the greatest increase in income inequality and the secondlargest jump in poverty rates, according to a report released today by a provincewide coalition. The Ontario Common Front is made up of more than 90 community groups and labour unions across the province, including the Toronto and York Region

Get ready for Thornhill Village fest It’s almost time for the Thornhill Village Festival, the 36th annual celebration of the community’s heritage roots. Held on the streets of historic Thornhill (along Centre Street in Vaughan and Colborne Street and Church Lane in Markham) it will offer family fun Saturday, Sept. 15 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. A highlight this year will be a double toast to the bicentennial of the War of 1812 and the Queen’s Dia-

Labour Council, the Greater Toronto Workers’ Assembly and the Ontario Secondary School Teacher’s Federation. Within two years, Ontario has fallen from seventh place to dead last in funding for all social programs, coalition director and lead report author Natalie Mehra said. Ontarians have the highest tuition and school fees, highest proportion of outof-pocket health care costs, a burgeoning array of user fees and thousands of fami-

lies wait years for support for children with disabilities, Ms Mehra said. Forty per cent of Ontarians are struggling with incomes that are stagnant or declining, the study found. It suggested it’s time to cancel tax cuts and loopholes for banks and corporations and reinvest this money in making the province more livable for communities. For more information about the campaign, visit WeAreOntario.ca

mond Jubilee, as the very first Thornhill Village Festival honoured Queen Elizabeth’s Silver Jubilee. The King’s Royal Yorkers and other historical militia will re-enact battle scenes from the 1800s. Enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of the past; re-enactments will take place at 1:30 and 2:45 p.m. The popular community parade will start at 10:30 a.m. and work its way north on Dudley, west on Elgin Street, then north on Yonge to Centre Street and then to Thornhill Public School.

There will be 150 vendors, an art show, dog costume contest, a variety of food to enjoy, beer gardens, music, rides and events for children. The Thornhill Village Festival is a project of the Society for the Preservation of Historic Thornhill (SPOHT), organized by a volunteer committee. Festival organizers appreciate support from the Region of York and the cities of Vaughan and Markham. For more, visit www. thornhillfestival.org

As our sense of frustration grows, we can find ourselves blaming our situation on what’s going on in the world around us by thinking ... “If only people were more like me.” We get trapped in our own set of

values because of the good feelings they used to bring us. Ironically, many times our solution, albeit unconsciously, is to do more of the very thing that is contributing to that feeling of imbalance. We try thinking harder, or attempt to organize and control our situations even more as a strategy to feel better about ourselves.

esty. Sometimes other people have a right not to know. Yes, creating more balance in our lives can be as simple as adding a component that we feel is missing. But that is a difficult thing to do unless we are also willing to take a look at what we already believe to be true and begin embracing the yang to our yin. How can we possibly add that component to our already full lives if we are not willing to first make room for it by taking a look at what we’re holding on to and why? The balance we desire in our world can only be achieved when each of us begins to turn our focus away from what we perceive others are doing or not doing and find that harmony within ourselves. What are the values or habits that you hold so tight that are preventing you from adding that necessary missing piece that will assist you to create the balanced life you desire?

However, we can work so hard that we will eventually find ourselves unable to relax or play, or play so much that we are unable to work diligently. We can focus our attention on helping others so much that we can no longer help ourselves, or focus so much on ourselves that we are unable to feel genuine compassion or empathy for others. We can use humour in our lives to the point that we eventually find ourselves unable to cry. Rabindranath Tagore, a Bengaili philosopher, once wrote: “A mind all logic is like a knife all blade. It makes the hand bleed that uses it.” Our greatest gifts will almost certainly become our greatest liabilities if we do not become aware of their duality. Working hard or helping others is a great thing, but not to the extent that we begin hurting ourselves. Humour can help the people in our lives and it can also hurt them. The same could be said for hon-

hat would you like to see more of in the world? Honesty, humour, patience, logic, creativity, sensitivity, structure, charity, humility, hard work or maybe even more play? Chances are your answer not only reflects what you value most, but also it is your greatest strength. It is what you take pride in and many of your greatest successes have resulted from that core belief. If you look a little harder, you might discover that the same attribute you value has also contributed to many of the pitfalls of your past, as well. For example, many times our need for more control in a situation has created just as many problems as it has solved. Our desire for more organization has, at times, contributed to further chaos, and our requirement to be patient has sometimes made us miss out on some valuable

Vaughan remains the largest City in Canada without its own hospital.

It’s time to put Vaughan first.

Vaughan has been neglected and taken for granted by the McGuinty/Sorbara Liberals for far too long. As your MPP I will:

Fight for our community and take strong action on local priorities. Unlike our last MPP, I won’t quit.

Make building the Vaughan Hospital a priority and restore the vision for greater health care services originally proposed by the Vaughan Campus of Care.

Hold the government accountable for the many promises they’ve made to Vaughan residents - and broken.

It used to be that Divine Brown only visited Vaughan to hunt for clothing deals at the city’s mega mall. But then the Juno award-winning artist met Adrian and Lucas Rezza — aka the Rezza Brothers — and that all changed. For the past several months, Ms Brown has been trekking north from Toronto to write and record songs with the Rezza Brothers for her latest album, Something Fresh, due out this fall. So far, the trio has collaborated on eight tracks, including the album’s first single, Gone, which dropped last month. “Gone is an up-tempo, highenergy song filled with angst just talking about being tired of being disrespected in a relationship,” Ms Brown explained. It was one of the first tracks they worked on together at the Rezza Brothers’ studio in the basement of Lucas’ Woodbridge home. And it all started with a beat Lucas developed and a chorus that Adrian had come up with. “Then we built the story around the chorus,” Ms Brown said. “It’s basically about being in a relationship, but the guy’s no good,

so you’re gone,” Adrian added. The collaboration began back in December after Ivan Evidente, an A&R director at Universal music, suggested they team up. The Rezza Brothers traded in performing to focus on writing and producing songs for other artists a couple of years ago and have built a name for themselves through their collaborations with artists such as Detroit rapper Obie Trice, The Commodores, Reema Major and Maestro Fresh Wes. Ms Brown met them at their studio to feel things out and there was an instant connection, she said. “There was a kinship that happened almost immediately upon meeting them and working with them,” Ms Brown said. “At first, they were kind of chill and laid back and then all of sudden the burst of energy came out as soon as they saw what kind of personality that I am. I have my really zany moments so all of a sudden their zaniness came out tenfold.” During their time together in the studio, the trio bonded over their shared love of classic soul and R&B records as well as their passion for making music. “They are like brothers to me,” See MUSIC, page 34.

It may be all backpacks, binders and ambition this week as families prepare for back to school, but for many students with learning disabilities, it’s less anticipation, more apprehension. That’s because these students know that what’s ahead for them will be more of a struggle than for their classmates and the one-on-one help they need to get through the school year is hard to come by. Learning Disabilities Association of York Region is calling out for volunteers to help shorten the lengthy waiting lists for tutors for students with special needs. About 250 students have signed on for extra assistance from the association, but with only 80 active volunteers, the wait list can be up to one year, says Helga Sirola, community development and program volunteer co-ordinator. About 150 students are currently on the waiting list. Often, they are students who have been flagged at-risk by teachers and their families may not be able to afford to pay for tutoring. That extra boost in learning is crucial, she says. “Early intervention is key because the more behind you get, the more difficult it becomes. It affects students’ self esteem, can lead to anxiety and depression.” Studies show learning disabilites can also be tied to high drop-out rate, leaving students who don’t get assistance more prone to homelessness or low incomes down the road she says. “Tutors provide the support teachers can’t give and can mean the difference between school success and failure.” For more than eight years, the association has co-ordinated a free tutoring program, linking volunteers with students needing extra help in math and literacy. Stan Rosenblum, 66, is one of them. He has been helping students with the association since 2006 at the Newmarket Public Library.

Each week he brings his “bag of tricks” — games like Cribbage, Set and Quiddler — to meet with a student for one hour. “I talk with them about what they’re doing in school. Sometimes they’re not too good at communicating or they’re shy, but I like to develop a kind of rapport with them. “It’s mainly a confidence thing. They don’t think they’re as smart as others. Their grades may be lower on report cards but that doesn’t reflect the reality. Some are very intelligent, some even gifted.” Volunteer tutors, aged 16 and older, receive monthly training, resources and support in exchange for nine-month commitment to spend an hour each week in the local library with a needy student between Kindergarten and Grade 8. Volunteers range from real estate agents to high school students and retired teachers. Jessica Di Meo, 21, signed on for the role three years ago, when she was in her graduating year at her Richmond Hill high school. Now a resident of Maple and a kinesiology major at York University, she has plans for graduate studies in behavioural science, but still looks forward to her weekly tutoring session. “I thought it would be a challenge, but it has been a blessing. “You need to be openminded and patient,” she says. “It’s about finding different ways to explain things and never giving up because there’s always a way to teach it.” Most rewarding, she says, is when a student, who has been struggling, finally gets it. “Their faces light up like Christmas. They are so grateful that someone has put the time and resources out for them.” Elaine Atcheson, a tutor in Mount Albert the past three years, agrees. “It’s just so satisfying when you see that light bulb go on.” To learn more, contact Learning Disabilities Association of York Region, 11181 Yonge St., Unit 221, Richmond Hill, call 905-8847933; e-mail info@ldayr.org or visit ldayr.org

OLD SCHOOL: Man’s affinity for archery began in boyhood

Archer makes own bows, arrows Jack-of-all-trades masters traditional crafts, hunts big game old-fashioned way By Chris Traber

ctraber@yrmg.com

Retired safecracker, part-time private school tutor, hunter, archery historian, marksman and weaponry crafter — the sum of Bill Frey’s eclectic life is greater than the 60 years he’s spent living it. Add musician, artist, student of karate and Zen, grower of exotic fungi, artful dodger of the Vietnam War and cancer survivor and you’ve got a man who’s cast a wide net on his world. The recent therapy that brought his throat cancer to remission melted 60 pounds from his six-foot, two-inch frame. He’s lanky and droll, serving up earthy anecdotes and pithy observations with a folksy style reminiscent of humourist-philosopher Will

Rogers. Born in Sarasota, Florida and raised in Michigan, the Aurora resident is kin to American folklore royalty. His uncle, Don West, was a southern poet and coal mine labour organizer in the 1930s. His cousin, iconic folk singer Hedy West, famously penned the music and lyrics to 500 Miles. His mother’s family hails from Union County, Georgia, where Deliverance was filmed. Many locals were offended by how the movie stereotyped mountain folk, Mr. Frey said in his economical manner. “But, then again, there was a lot of inbreeding,” he added with wry timing and a smile. This affable man was heavily

influenced by his parents. His father, a trained sniper who served in the United States Army in the Korean War, gave him his first bow and arrow and a .22 rifle. Despite working 60-hour weeks, his dad made time, serving as his son’s cub and scout master and teaching him marksmanship, hunting and an appreciation for nature. His mother instilled a sense of pride in his heritage. Her family settled in rural Georgia in 1732, speaking Elizabethan English until residents opened their

communities to the world in 1952. “The moonshiners are still there,” he said. “Most, though, have been replaced by pot growers.” He recalled the moment when his love of archery was forged. He was trying to rid the family chicken coop of rats. His childsized arrow bounced off the rodent. It reared up and hissed. He needed more firepower. He wanted a Fred Bean brand 37-pound bow with 26-inch draw, he said. It cost $35. “I worked bailing hay until I earned the money, went to the store and put it on the counter,” he said. “The clerk said there would be 4 per cent Michigan sales tax. My dad paid the extra and that’s when I was first at cross purposes with my government.”

The kid and his new weapon returned to the coop. “I pinned that rat to the floorboards,” he said. The Vietnam War raged during his teenage years. Young men were being conscripted into service. Mr. Frey was a conscientious objector. He moved to Canada, working for Toronto “slum landlords” at $1 an hour when minimum wage was $2. With the 1975 fall of Saigon, the war ended, as did the U.S. government’s hunt for draft dodgers. Mr. Frey is proud of his legal landed immigrant status. “They won’t let me vote, but I’m allowed to pay taxes,” he said. He studied electrical contracting See THERE’S, page 17.

and was offered a job with a firm specializing in opening bank vaults that were broken, faulty or for which the combinations had been forgotten. Eventually, he bought the business. “I cracked safes,” he said with a grin. “People always asked if that was a day or night job.” He met and married Donna, a ballet teacher from Montreal. They raised two daughters, Kathryn, a teacher in Belgium, and Morgan, who teaches choreography despite having two prosthetic legs and one hand. The family moved to Aurora in mid 1990s. Although Mr. Frey sold the vault repair company, the two men he trained continue to win vault opening competitions. A reformed smoker, he paints water colours to keep his hands busy. He is growing gourmet shiitake mushrooms in his garden and still plays guitar, as his ancestors did as entertainment. A purple belt, he assists his sensei at the Northern Karate School dojo in Aurora. He also teaches at Toronto Waldorf School in Thornhill. Archery, however, remains his passion. With properties in Claremont and Coboconk, he hunts bear and deer in season, often teaching archery history and skills at York County Bowmen Club. He researches ancient bows, proudly displaying a 200-year-old Chinese weapon crafted from water buffalo hide, ox sinew and wood. He crafts his own bows, using primitive methods, exotic woods and parts of animals he has hunted. His collection includes flat, long and recurve bows. He constructs the quivers that carry his arrows, many styled by hand, save some store-bought shafts. He is not a trophy hunter, he said. He complies with provincial laws requiring steel tip arrows for clean kills. Each part of the downed prey is used for its meat and hide. What he can’t freeze and store, he shares with locals at his hunt camps. He hunts ethically, foregoing high powered rifles, accurate from 800 yards. He stalks with bow and arrow, drawing on skill and a bow string, often close enough to allow a black bear to run him down should his shot be off. He regales with tales from the deep woods of angry bears climbing trees in an attempt to make him the meal. A follower of Zen philosophy, he has a reverence for nature. For 5,000 years, people hunted to survive. Crafting and using archery weapons is an ancient art and hunting is a science. He carries on the tradition. “If you can kill an animal without great elation or remorse, it’s a good kill,” he said. “I always have a bit of remorse, but I am grateful for the gift.” The hunt is not all about killing, he said. There’s an ethereal and mystic quality about nature, being in a forest before dawn, listening to the woods wake, coming to life. There’s also a bond between the purist and his bow. “It’s the magic of letting the arrow loose and watching it fly to its target,” he said. “Everyone should give it a shot. No pun intended.”

Fringe candidates hope to make difference

VAUGHAN

BYELECTION VOTERS HEAD TO THE POLLS SEPT. 6 TO ELECT A NEW MPP

Here are some of the candidates vying for your vote Sept. 6

PC candidate endorsed by labourers’ union

Family Coalition Party of Ontario

Bart Wysokinski grew up and attended school in Maple. He graduated from Ryerson University, with a degree in geographic analysis and currently works for a major Canadian retail firm. As a married father of three, he would like the family unit to be recognized by government as the most important aspect of the community because only with strong families can we build a strong Ontario. The Family Coalition Party is a fiscally conservative political party that recognizes the supremacy of God and the rule of law with policies focused on so-called “traditional families” and property ownership. Freedom Party of Ontario

Erin Goodwin, 26, and her husband manage a membership lounge in Toronto where adults can “comfortably consume cannabis.” Ms Goodwin is also a sup-

She counts among her influences Russian-American philosopher Ayn Rand and American Republican politician Ron Paul. The Freedom Party has called for competition in health care and in education, replacing property taxes with consumption taxes and scrapping provincial income tax. Ontario Libertarian Party

Paolo Fabrizio is a former Vaughan resident, now living in Barrie, who works as a baker.

PAOLO FABRIZIO: Ontario Libertarian Party candidate. The married father of three has run for the Libertarian Party several times including in last fall’s provincial election. His top issue is limiting the role of government. The Libertarian Party believes the government should only be involved in national defence, providing protection from criminals through the police and settling disputes among individuals, where private and voluntary arbitration has failed, through the court system.

Progressive Conservative byelection candidate Tony Genco received an endorsement from the Labourers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA) yesterday during a tour of LIUNA Local 183’s training centre in Woodbridge. “The Ontario PC commitment to supporting middle-class families and focusing on job creation is in line with LIUNA’s priorities. These are commitments that are important to us,” LIUNA vice-president Joseph Mancinelli said in a news release. LIUNA represents workers in building construction, heavy construction and highway construction as well as manufacturing, commerce and health care. —Adam Martin-Robbins

Q & A with Grit, PC candidates Q:

Where do you stand on reforming the provincial building code to require new homes to include such things as solar panels, triple-glazed windows, tankless water heaters etc?

A:

Premier Dalton McGuinty (left) visited Vaughan Aug. 14 with St. Phillips Bakery owner Rob Bozzo, Liberal byelection candidate Steven Del Duca and Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua to discuss issues key issues in Vaughan.

Green Party of Ontario Leader Mike Schreiner and byelection candidate Paula Conning campaigned in Vaughan Aug. 28 to condemn “old-line parties for playing out a false crisis in education”.

Progressive Conservative candidate Tony Genco: “I would like to see the market play a role in deciding what’s best and make sure the buyers are ready to receive that type of product. The challenge is that we have a situation where the cost of new homes is exploding these days and people are being priced out of the market. We want to make sure whatever obligations we place...are affordable to the consumer. The market needs to drive a lot of these decisions and I think the market is ready for that.

★ HOMESELLERS ★ DISTRESS SALES

Progressive Conservative Leader Tim Hudak and candidate Tony Genco toured Vaughan Valley Estates Aug. 27 to discuss their party’s plan to stop what they say is the Liberal government’s reckless overspending.

Liberal candidate Steven Del Duca: “You’ve got to strike a careful balance when it comes to reviewing and changing the building code for a couple of reasons. One is, you want to make sure there is an economic argument to be made as much as a societal or community argument to be made. Because, at the end of the day, the construction,

home building industry is a huge economic driver in this region and across this entire province. … I think you have to strike that balance and make sure that you’re leading and you’re guiding and we’re building product for consumers here in Ontario that’s as sustainable as possible that helps encourage and foster and enhance those new, emerging, innovative sectors like solar and renewable (energy). And, at the same time, you’re not (choking off) homebuilders and, for that matter, consumers because the more difficult and intricate and complex you make the home itself, you start to have an impact on cost.”

Music fueled friendship From page 11.

Ms Brown said. “They are not only a joy and a frickin’ riot to be around because they’re so funny, but they’re also very passionate about music and I’m very passionate about music, so that definitely helped to solidify and cement the creative relationship that we’ve nurtured so far.” The Rezza Brothers feel the same way. “We really, really love Divine,” Adrian, 36, said. “It transcends music, we like her as a friend.” The brothers especially enjoyed working with somebody who shares their drive and high standards. “It was really a match made in heaven,” Adrian said. “She’s a vocal beast,” Lucas, 33, added. “I feel like I’ve been spoiled by her. The expectations I have in the way of vocalists is (now) very high.” That chemistry flowed into all the songs that they collaborated on, Ms Brown said. “My sound is definitely based in R&B, soul … but this was really exciting because these guys had a really cool

way of drawing from a bit of the Motown sound, a bit of a classic soul sound and then bringing something very contemporary to it, which was awesome,” Ms Brown said. “You might think of someone like Aretha Franklin when you hear the music. It was really, really exciting.” One of the biggest thrills for Adrian was getting to perform a duet with Ms Brown on the track Smile. Ms Brown proposed the idea after hearing him sing in the studio during some of their writing sessions. “I kept saying we’ve got to do something together because he’s got such a beautiful voice and so I kept saying let’s try to do something together and finally we came up with a song that has that very sort of classic duet sound with a contemporary feel and backbeat to it,” she explained. “It’s such a simple song, but such a beautiful melody and his voice and my voice pair up really, really well.” Adrian was taken aback, at first, when Ms Brown suggested they sing together on the album. “To tell you the truth, I

was caught off guard,” he recalled. “It truly is, and I mean this in the most sincere and genuine sense, an honour. I was ecstatic. I went home and told my wife, ‘Oh my God, Divine wants me to do a duet with her.’” For the Rezza Brothers, working with Ms Brown ranks near the top among the many projects they’ve been involved in during their career. “I think this has been one of the most exciting musical experiences we’ve had working with an artist,” Adrian said. In fact, all three of them say they are looking forward to doing it again. “I would love every time she does an album that we can get together,” Adrian said. That certainly could happen, especially if Ms Brown has anything to say about it. “We’ve got such a strong songwriting connection that I can’t see myself not wanting to do other projects with them, for sure,” Ms Brown said. “Whether it’s writing for other people or writing for my own projects.”

While we’ve had plenty of sunny days this summer, we’ve also had more rainfall than other centres, experts say.

Warmer autumn in store By Simon Martin

smartin@yrmg.com

There’s no reason for you to wave goodbye to the balmy temperatures that have blessed us all summer, just yet. The above-average temperatures will continue into fall, which could put into question the tried and true fashion rule of no white after Labour Day, according to weather experts. “If your muscle shirts and tank tops are off-white, go for it,” Environment Canada senior climatologist Dave Phillips said. September will get off to a scorching start, with temperatures pushing the low 30s on the weekend, Mr. Phillips said. He’s predicting temperatures in September, October and November will be above average in York Region, which would add to a record streak. Since March 2011, every month has seen above-average temperatures. “That’s 17 months in a row that are warmer than normal,” Mr. Phillips said. “We’re on a roll here.” Temperatures in the fall should continue to be a few degrees above normal, Weather Network meteorologist Dayna Vettese agreed, noting Labour Day weekend will be nice and hot. “I wouldn’t pack away the T-shirts or shorts,” she said, adding it will get cool at night, so sweaters and pants may be necessary. Looking back at the summer and the intense sun, Ms Vettese said York Region was lucky to twin record high temperatures with significant rainfall. “The heat of the summer was relentless.

It started early and didn’t go away,” Mr. Phillips said. The average temperature from May through August was 20.1 C, which is the highest average record for the region, according to Mr. Phillips. The previous highs were in 2010 and 1991. There have been 26 days during which temperatures have broken 30 C and Mr. Phillips expects a few more days to be added to that tally. What’s remarkable for the area is while Niagara and southern Ontario were stricken with drought-like conditions, York Region received above average rainfall. The readings at Buttonville had a precipitation total for the summer at 364 millimetres. There was a lot of rain at the beginning of June and the end of July, Mr. Phillips said. Also of note is there were 16 smog advisory days this year, compared to just one last year. Looking further ahead, the question is how bad will the winter be? While Mr. Phillips said it’s a little early to get into specific predictions, he has heard many people worry we are going to pay the price for last year’s mild winter. “I’m beginning to think we are getting a little soft and wimpish,” he said. “One thing I’m willing to put a lot of money on is that winter will be longer, snowier and colder than last year.” That’s music to the ears of ice-anglers and skiers, but, until then, Mr. Phillips encourages you to enjoy fall. “A lot of Canadians love the fall, but it tends to be shorter than the other seasons,” he said.

Ecole secondaire Richmond Hill is under construction on Wright Street in the downtown core, on the site of the former Richmond Hill High School. It is set to open Sept. 4.

Regional French high school ready to open A new regional French high school is on track to open in September. Ecole secondaire Richmond Hill is under construction on Wright Street in the downtown core, on the site of the former Richmond Hill High School. Portions of the heritage building are being incorporated into the new facility, which will open for this school year to French-speaking students in grades 7 through 9. Under the regional Ontario French school board — Conseil Scolaire Viamonde — the school will take in students from most of York Region, including Vaughan,

Richmond Hill, Markham, King, Aurora, Newmarket, East Gwillimbury and Whitchurch-Stouffville. It will be fed by two York Region elementary schools, Académie de la Moraine in Oak Ridges and Vaughan’s École élémentaire La Fontaine. Communications representative for the French school board, Jonathan Bouchard, confirmed that the doors will open Sept. 4 for the first day of school. The $12-million, threestorey facility will also boast environmentally conscious technology, including the reduction of electricity con-

sumption, heating and ventilation by placing sensors in offices and classes. In the past week the front entranceway has been paved and finishing touches are being done inside and outside the facility. The former Richmond Hill High School opened its Wright Street doors in 1922, then the students and teachers moved north to its current location in 2000. The principal of the new French high school is Joanne Shank; to register call 905637-5695 or visit the website http://ecolesecondairerichmondhill.csviamonde.ca — Marney Beck

York Region residents are rallying around the family of a Richmond Hill woman who is in a coma and stranded in Croatia after falling from a yacht. Anna Leibenko, a former cheerleader with the Toronto Argonauts, had been travelling for the month with friends and on-board a catamaran Aug. 17 when she slipped, hit her head on a ledge and fell into the ocean, falling unconscious instantly. Now she is in a medically induced coma, hooked up to life support in critical condition in a hospital in Split, Croatia, and her family just wants her home.
