‘Without Reverse Gear’ details Maple man’s personal journey Domenic Cina hoping to turn play into feature-length film By Adam Martin-Robbins

amartinrobbins@yrmg.com

Sometimes life imitates art, other times a life contains the stuff art is made from. In Domenic Cina’s case, it’s the latter. The longtime Maple resident penned a one-man play about his personal journey, dubbed Without Reverse Gear. Now, he’s hoping to secure the necessary financial backing to turn it into a featurelength film. “It’s the story of the rise and fall and redemption of Domenic who, after going though hell, is reborn,” he said. “There’s a sort of underdog feel to the story. … There’s a little bit of Rocky in my story.” As with Sylvester Stallone’s1976 hit film, Cina’s rise began in a boxing ring. He was working out at Sully’s Boxing Club when representatives from an advertising agency showed up looking for boxers to appear in a Black Label beer commercial. Cina, who was in his twenties at the time, landed a spot in the ad. “That opened the door,” said Cina who grew up in Toronto’s Little Italy neighbourhood. “The modelling came and I worked in markets like Milan, in Paris, in London and in New York.” Eventually, Cina wound up in Los Angeles where he continued modelling, enrolled in

Domenic Cina is hoping to turn Without Reverse Gear into feature-length film. acting classes, did some theatre and spent a lot of time “as all actors do, auditioning (for roles).” His first major acting gig was a guest spot on Evening Shade, a sitcom starring Burt Reynolds, which aired from 1990 to 1994. Other roles soon followed. “After that I got to meet and work with Sophia Loren,” he said. Then, Cina said, he was discovered by renowned photographer Bruce Weber and was cast in a North American-wide Banana Republic ad campaign. He was flown to New York City for four days and worked alongside supermodel Kate Moss. “That kind of put me on the map,” Cina said.

But just as his career started soaring, something tragic happened. Given it’s at the heart of his story, Cina doesn’t “want to let the cat out of the bag”. Nonetheless, in the wake of that tragedy, he headed home to Toronto. He continued working as an actor, landing mostly guest roles in TV series and movies of the week such as Sugartime with John Turturro, Sex & Mrs. X starring Linda Hamilton and Jacqueline Bisset, Relic Hunter with Tia Carrere and Mutant X. Years after his sudden departure, Cina returned to Los Angeles in hopes of his taking acting career to the next level. Unfortunately, things didn’t work out as he’d hoped

“This industry is about momentum and when you lose the momentum, you have to rebuild it and recreate it,” he said. “But there was such a big gap. Years had passed, L.A. wasn’t the same place and I wasn’t the same person.” So, Cina decided to take a sabbatical from acting and write a one-man play about his life with the aim of ultimately turning it into a feature film. He took inspiration from others who’ve done the same thing such as Chazz Palminteri with A Bronx Tale and Nia Vardalos with My Big Fat Greek Wedding. “I’ve always been a decent writer and I was actually encouraged by friends who said, ‘You’ve got to write your story. This isn’t typical, what

you’ve gone through,’” he said. He wrote Without Reverse Gear, a one-act play with eight scenes, and it garnered “a lot of attention” including from an Off-Broadway director who was interested in staging it in New York, Cina said. Securing financing to mount the play, however, proved to be too big of a challenge so he shifted gears and “started knocking on doors” of film producers. Eventually, Cina said, he landed a meeting with a notable production company, which has backed such projects as The Humbling starring Al Pacino, and, more recently, Septembers of Shiraz with Adrien Brody and Salma Hayek. The firm has agreed to co-

finance his film to the tune of $2.5 million U.S., or half the budget, he said. Now he’s looking for an investor — or investors — willing to put up the other half. “Financing is the toughest part,” Cina said. “The film Dallas Buyers Club that script was kicking around Hollywood for 18 years and then the financing came together in a couple of months.” Still, he’s optimistic that if he finds “the right investor” his film has a good shot at success. “I’ve heard it many times: ‘It’s a great story. I love your script.’” To find out more contact domenic. cina@yahoo.com or visit www.domeniccina.com.

The case of King Township’s Marco Muzzo, the alleged drunk driver accused in a Vaughan crash that killed three children and their grandfather, has been adjourned again. Muzzo, 29, appeared by video link last Thursday at

Newmarket court. His defence lawyer, Brian Greenspan, said the need for repeated bail hearings is because he needs to review police disclosure. Muzzo faces multiple charges from the Sept. 27 crash in Vaughan that killed

Milly, 2, Harrison, 5, and 9-year-old Daniel NevilleLake. The children’s grandfather, Gary Neville of King, also died in the crash. The next bail hearing is Dec. 10. Muzzo remains in police custody.

Bridging cultural divide to honour deserving citizens

Estate tax an example of Liberal gauging

O

ur news organization works hard to report on the ever-changing, multi-ethnic face of York Region and often covers and writes about events and activities of its many cultural organizations. However, truth be told, I’ve not attended many events presented by Islamic organizations in my community. That is until Sunday night, when I attended the second annual York Region Appreciation Dinner and Awards, presented at a Markham banquet hall by the Al Nadwa Islamic Education Centre of Richmond Hill. In addition to the usual internal “what should I wear” question many of us struggle with when attending a public event, as a woman, I also wondered whether I would need a head covering, and had a scarf handy in my purse just in case. I need not have worried. Our reporter, Kim Zarzour, and I received a very warm welcome — especially as she was to receive a media award from the Muslim nonprofit organization for her “excellence in community journalism”. Zarzour was honoured as one of eight people who help “foster greater cross-country cultural harmony in our diverse region,” as stated in the invitation. Two York Regional Police officers were among those honoured with awards: Det. Const. Maryam Alikhani, a hate crime prevention officer, and P.C. Ida Jankowska, from traffic safety, who was instrumental in stopping and arresting a man wanted for criminal activity and break-ins not only in York Region, but Peel and Halton as well. They earned well deserved applause as they stepped onto the stage, as did Richmond Hill firefighter Kevin Hutchings and York paramedic Brad MacMillan. Hutchings was honoured for his multi-faceted community involvement in Georgina with the food bank, 4-H club and co-ordinating a toy drive to help families through Yellow Brick House, the Salvation Army and other regional agencies.

Marney Beck MacMillan not only gives of himself at work as a paramedic, but on his own time he helped organize an alcohol injury prevention program for youth offered through Southlake and Markham Stouffville hospitals, called 3 Party. It re-creates the kind of trauma young people face by indulging in risky behaviour and decisions. One of the star award winners of the night is just 16, a Markham high school student called Mohammed Nasir. He was given the paparazzi photography treatment as he stepped on stage to get his entrepreneur award, for founding his own company, Supernova Aerospace, manufacturing Drones for Humanity to deliver aid around the world in disaster zones. Radha Bhardwaj of York’s Blue Door Shelters earned the community service award, while a second media award went to radio journalist Naheed Mustafa, whose work is heard on CBC, Radio Netherlands and the BBC, and who helps train journalists in Pakistan. Richmond Hill Mayor Dave Barrow and Imams Dr. Saeed Faizi and Abdulhai Patel made direct or indirect reference to terror campaigns in Paris or here in Canada, and the vital need to bridge cultural divides and foster harmony and peace. Bringing cultural groups together for such award dinners bridges gaps between different cultures, reminding us we are all wanting positive role models for our young people, and we all want a safe and inclusive society. Turns out, I didn’t need to wear my headscarf. Even though we wore different clothing styles, we all felt a sense of belonging — right at home in our community.

GET CONNECTED

Our Ontario Liberal government has designed and legislated a tool to tax us after death (squeezing us to get the last dollar in tax), a regressive form of taxation called, appropriately, EAT (Estate Administration Tax). I have not seen any discussion or announcement that this tax was coming. It seems as if it was purposely sneaked into effect, to avoid any opposition. Bear in mind that you have already paid taxes over the years on revenue from which your wealth accumulated. It sounds like double taxation to me. As if the tax itself is not onerous enough, the process of settling this liability is a nightmare, with heavy penalties, payable by the executor of the will, if the tax not paid in the time allowed. For example, on an estate value of $500,000 the tax will be $7,000. Plus, the will’s executor will have to hire a lawyer. We, the living, do not have to worry, as we will be dead then, but our beneficiaries will be victimized. When will Premier Kathleen Wynne end her tax gouging to pay for former premier Dalton McGuinty’s wastefullness, not to mention her giveaways to the teacher’s union and the selling out of hydro ?

David Gittens Newmarket

HAVE YOUR SAY Send your letter to the editor to pfuthey@yrmg.com

Refugee coverage ‘misleading, evasive’ Re: ‘Do we close our doors in the face of terror? column by Marney Beck, Nov. 19. This coverage is misleading, tendentious and evasive. York Region Media Group may have been misled by its source, Susan McGrath, who told it most Syrian refugees are women and children. They are about two-thirds adult males based on UN High Commission for Refugees statistics the range is from 62 per cent to 78 per cent. And if you’re in Syria, and simply trying to get away from the slaughter, you don’t have to go all the way to Germany — or Canada — to do it. Painting migrants as fleeing their war-torn homeland is misleading. As for the news story’s premise “fear” is what motivates those advising caution about migrants, prudence, wisdom and a need for solid evidence are not fear.

York Regional Police is investigating after a dog died in a case of suspected antifreeze poisoning in Vaughan. The dog and its owner were out for a walk on Shawbridge Boulevard, in the area of Gidleigh Park Crescent on Nov. 25 when the dog stopped and began eating something by a mailbox. Later that day, the dog became violently ill and by the next morning was too weak to walk. The dog was taken to a veterinarian who advised the owner that the symptoms the dog was suffering from were consistent with glycol (antifreeze) poisoning. By Nov. 27, the dog’s condition had deteriorated to the point that she had to be euthanized. York police were contacted earlier today by the owner of the dog. Police found dog kibble that had been spread over a 15-foot area around a mailbox on Shawbridge Bou-

Stratigakis gets two player of the year nominations Nominated in pair of age categories Sarah Stratigakis of Woodbridge has been nominated for not one, but two Canadian soccer player of the year awards by the Canadian Soccer Association. The 16-year-old, who started playing the game when she was eight, has been nominated for Canada’s top under-20 women’s player as well as Canada’s top under-17 women’s player. Stratigakis, who qualifies on both counts because she was born in 1999, plays for the Unionville-Milliken Soc-

cer Club. She made her national women’s debut at age 14 in 2013 winning a silver medal in the 2013 CONCACAF Women’s Under-17 championship in Montego Bay, Jamaica. She also won a gold medal at the CONCACAF Girls’ Under-15 championship in 2014 and was a member of Canada’s Pan Am Games team that finished fourth this past summer on home soil. Stratigakis was also nominated last year for the top under-17 player award.

He just made his English Championship debut with Queen’s Park Rangers – he called it a “very proud moment” – and now Woodbridge soccer star Michael Petrasso is back to defend his selection as Canada’s best under-20 men’s soccer player. The 20-year-old was picked as the 2014 top men’s under-20 player in Canada. The award is available to all those born in 1995 and later and is chosen by coaches across the country. Petrasso, who has been part of the QPR setup since moving to London at age 16, has had a great year appearing with the Canadian men’s under-23 team – he scored

a memorable goal in Canada’s 1-0 win over Panama – and wants to continue to show his form in England. “Getting opportunities off the bench and getting my first start at Loftus Road, it’s a very proud moment. Hopefully I can impress and get many more,” Petrasso said after last Saturday’s game. “Coming here as a kid when I was 16, the goal was always to play for the First Team,” he told the QPR official website. The choice of top under-20 men’s player will be revealed by the Canadian Soccer Association later this month.

Teams shortlisted for Hwy. 427 extension project Three teams have been shortlisted to submit proposals for the long-awaited and anticipated Hwy. 427 expansion project. Hwy. 427 expansion includes an extension from Hwy. 7 to Major Mackenzie Drive as well as four-kilometre road-widening south of Albion Road to Hwy. 7 to expand it to eight lanes. The extension will be six lanes between Hwy. 7 and Rutherford Road, narrowing to four lanes between Rutherford and Major Mackenzie Drive. It will include interchanges at Langstaff Road, Rutherford Road and Major Mack-

enzie Drive. Construction on the project is expected to begin at the earliest by fall 2016. At this point, Infrastructure Ontario has chosen three teams to submit a final proposal to design, build, finance and maintain the project. The short-list of three was whittled down from an opening list of six bidders for the project. The three remaining teams are: • 427 Link with companies including Plenary, AECON, Walsh and Hatch Mott MacDonald. • Blackbird Infrastructure

Group with firms including Cintra, CRH, Ferrovial Agroman, Dufferin, AIA Engineers and Urban Systems Ltd. • Link 427 with partners including ACS, Miller, Dragados, Miller Construction, BOT and MMM Group. Record-setting fall a prelude to warm winter? By Chris Traber

ctraber@yrmg.com

What may well be York Region’s warmest autumn on record could be a dress rehearsal for our winter, Environment Canada senior climatologist David Phillips predicted. “I love the fall,” the sage forecaster said. “It’s my favourite season. Problem is it’s usually only three weeks long. This year it’s been three months long. It’s a bonus. We’ve been booking tee times instead of waxing skis. “This could be the opening act for our winter to come.” Our unusually temperate autumn is courtesy of the phenomenon called El Niño, an occurrence when warm water near the equator migrates to Atlantic and Pacific shores, he explained. The changing ocean patterns create an atmospheric circulation shift, affecting weather

globally. This often translates into milder temperatures and drier than normal weather throughout North America. “We’ve been on a roll,” Phillips said of temperatures since the official end of summer Sept. 23. We’ve enjoyed three balmy months to date, each between 2.5C and 3.5C higher than normal, he said. As of Dec. 1, we’ve only had 4.4 cm of snow, compared to an accumulation of 23 cm a year ago. While our relatively benign autumn has kept grass green, saved energy and made commuting easier, we shouldn’t believe winter has been cancelled, Phillips said with a chuckle. “Fall has been a tease. It will cool and there are no guarantees,” he said. Reiterating his department’s winter outlook, a general forecast through March 1, we can expect a friendlier, warmer winter than last sea-

son. With El Niño in play, Canada won’t suffer the polar vortex that put us in a deep freeze last winter, he said, adding we can expect less arctic and Siberian air this winter and softer, milder southern air. We shouldn’t expect any abnormal precipitation, he said. The unknown, with warmer temperatures predicted, is whether that precipitation will be rain or snow. “With it being milder, we may see less snow than last year,” said Phillips. “Snow won’t last. It’ll melt. That means less shoveling.” Will we have a white Christmas? “Can’t say,” Phillips said. “El Niño doesn’t tell us that.”

United Way launches Career Navigator

OH CHRISTMAS TREE!

ctraber@yrmg.com

U

nited Way Toronto & York Region today launched Career Navigator, an initiative designed to help youth who face barriers, such as poverty and discrimination, get ready for good jobs and launch successful careers. Career Navigator is a major expansion of United Way’s Youth Success Strategy, United Way CEO Susan McIsaac said. For the first time, a diverse range of partners, including employers, community agencies, post-secondary institutions, the City of Toronto and the Government of Ontario, have been brought together by United Way to provide a co-ordinated response to the serious challenge of youth unemployment in this region, she explained.

How it works Career Navigator works by recruiting young people who have the hardest time getting on a career path. It connects them with training and accreditation to get into good jobs with long-term potential. And it ensures these youth have the support they need to do well over time, both in training and on the job. “This is a win-win for everyone,” McIsaac said. “Young people are getting both the hard qualifications and the soft skills they need to succeed. Employers can access talented youth who are job-ready. “By coming together, we’re making an impor-

tant contribution to the social and economic development of our entire region.” Ontario is committing $1.3-million to support the program through 2018, Children and Youth Services Minister Tracy MacCharles said. The funds will help remove barriers that might otherwise make it hard for a young person to build their career, such as not having housing or child care, mental health issues or lack of access to education and skills training. The project is part of the enhanced Ontario Youth Action Plan, which is investing $55 million in at-risk youth, MacCharles said. United Way also recognized individual donors who have made the first significant private sector investments in United Way’s Youth Success Strategy. Shirley Granovsky and Donald Guloien, with Irene Boychuk, have each donated $1 million to United Way Toronto & York Region to help launch the strategy. “At United Way, we believe community-wide challenges demand a communitywide response and we’re committed to doing our part to address serious problems like youth unemployment,” McIsaac said. “It’s inspiring to see United Way’s generous donors and all of these partners come together to make a real difference.” For more information, visit unitedwaytyr.com.

“7 Deadly Mistakes That Will Cost You Thousands When You Sell Your Vaughan Home” Vaughan - A new report has just been released which reveals 7 costly mistakes that most homeowners make when selling their home, and a 9 Step System that can help you sell your home fast and for the most amount of money. This industry report shows clearly how the traditional ways of selling homes have become increasingly less and less effective in today’s market. The fact of the matter is that fully three quarters of homesellers don’t get what they want for their homes and become disillusioned and - worse - financially disadvantaged when they put their homes on the market. As this report uncovers, most homesellers make 7 deadly mistakes that cost them literally thousands of dollars. The good

news is that each and every one of these mistakes is entirely preventable. In answer to this issue, industry insiders have prepared a free special report entitled “The 9 Step System to Get Your Home Sold Fast and For Top Dollar”. LED TV Photo/CITY OF VAUGHAN ARCHIVES, OFFICE OF THE CITY CLERK

This week’s Vintage Vaughan image is of Hwy. 7 excavation from the corner of Lansdowne Street, 1930 The Great Depression was one of the most significant events of the 20th century. People lost their savings, their jobs and their property. As ONLINE: The Archives can an agriculture-based local economy, with many of life’s necesbe reached by email at sities produced on local farms, Vaughan was not quite as hard archives@vaughan.ca or hit as the nation’s urban areas. Nevertheless, its people felt the at http://bit.ly/1Lhtvrn Depression’s impact, with the situation growing so grim by the early 1930s that Township Council was compelled to implement a welfare system for providing money, food and clothes to residents who were unable to support themselves (at this time, there were no social welfare programs in Canada). The emphasis for assistance was families, particularly children. Vaughan Council was very innovative and responsive to the needs of the community, and even managed to secure various large-scale makework projects from the federal government. Highway #7 was one such project; constructed in 1930-31, it provided much-needed local employment, as well as an excellent transportation route.. Visit yorkregion.com/vintagevaughan to see these and other historical photographs. Every Thursday, a new image will be added. Additionally, community submissions for consideration are welcome. This time round, Michael Dal Colle of Woodbridge wants to make his mark and stick with Canada’s World Junior team. The Oshawa Generals captain and fourth-year Ontario Hockey League star has been chosen to taken part in the Canadian World Junior Championship team training camp set for Dec. 10-14 at the Mastercard Arena in Etobicoke. Last year, Dal Colle, a 6-2, 190-pound scoring winger, was one of the final cuts of the team that went on to win the World Junior gold medal in Canada. Off to a bit of a slow start after being sent back to Osha-

wa after his second New York Islanders NHL training camp, the 19-year-old has picked up the pace recently and has 21 points in 25 games this season, including his 100th OHL regular season goal. He was the fifth pick of the NHL draft by the Islanders in 2014 after a standout second season when he had 95 points. He followed up last year with 93 points and helped lead the Generals to OHL and Memorial Cup titles. Dal Colle was the seventh overall pick of the Generals in the 2012 OHL draft. “We are extremely proud of all our players, but Michael is one that has stood out for a number of years,” says Roger

Hunt, vice president and general manager of the Generals. “He is an elite player, our captain and a Memorial Cup champion. We hope to see him as a Canadian World Junior Gold Medalist, and we know he will represent the Oshawa Generals well.” The selection camp will feature two games against a team of players from Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) on Dec. 12 and 13. The CIS roster was announced on Monday and features 20 Canadian Hockey League graduates. The 2016 World Junior Hockey Championships take place in Finland from Dec. 26 to Jan. 5.
