A former vice principal at Vaughan’s Woodbridge College was honored by York police for her efforts supporting youth in the community as part of a special Black History month celebration held Saturday in Aurora. Joycelin Brown, who served as a vice principal with York Region District School Board for six years, following 21 years with Toronto District School Board, was presented with a Deeds Speak Award by York Police Chief Eric Jolliffe in front of a crowd of hundreds gathered at police headquarters. “I thank you, York Regional Police, and I thank everybody who has given a kind word at anytime,” said Brown, who immigrated to Canada from Jamaica in 1978 and started her career as an English teacher in 1988, after graduating from York University. “But it is not about being recognized, it is more about doing what you must do. And that is, we must keep on going, we must keep on helping our youth.”

The main mason By Adam Martin-Robbins

Nearly 64 years after he first picked up a trowel, Ferdinando Andreetta is still putting his skills to work as a master mason on construction projects across the Greater Toronto Area. away and the other moved back to Italy, Ferdinando decided to shutter the firm and go to work for another company, Steven said. In 1988, his wife, Grace, passed away. The following year, Ferdinando and Steven decided to go into business together. They founded Stefcon Construction Inc., headquartered on Edgeley Boulevard in Concord. Though Ferdinando has an office there, he seldom uses it as he much prefers being outside. “He’ll come in at the end of the day and spend maybe 15, 20 minutes there and out the door he goes,” Steven said. Steven managed, at one point, to persuade his dad to spend a little more time

helping out in the office, but he didn’t last very long. “He tried it for two months and it wasn’t for him.” Steven explained. “He said, ‘Sorry Steve, I’ve gotta go out, give me a job.’ He couldn’t take it.” Ferdinando still regularly works six days a week. “He looks forward to going to work every single day,” Steven said. “He’s 78 now and every single Saturday he still gives me a call, or Friday night when he gets back to the office, and says ‘What are we doing tomorrow? Are we going out?’” He also takes a great deal of pleasure in mentoring young masons who show promise. “The one thing he does enjoy is when he sees a young person with talent coming up,” Steven said.

“Honestly, these days, there aren’t too many out there coming up, but he finds one every few years that he loves to train and keeps them at his side to give them his experience in the trade.” Ferdinando still oversees the company’s large, more challenging projects. “We have seven other foremen, but my critical ones that are most difficult or complicated, he’s the one that will be on them,” Steven said. “And if he’s supposed to go away on vacation, he won’t go. He’s really dedicated to his job and to the project and, at the end of the day, he loves seeing things built.” He’s certainly helped build many facilities in Vaughan, including city

erdinando Andreetta has been plying his trade as a mason for more than six decades and though he’s almost 80, there’s little else he’d rather be doing. “I can’t stay home. If I stay at home, I’ll go crazy,” said the 78-year-old Woodbridge resident, his Italian accent still thick after living in Canada for 60 years. Andreetta was born in 1937 and grew up in Oderzo, a small town just outside Venice. At 14, he started laying bricks, earning about 90 cents an hour. In his late teens, Andreetta immigrated to Canada to join his brother, Giorgio, who was here working as a mason. Andreetta landed a job at Gottardo Masonry and worked there for about four years. Then, in his mid-20s, he founded a company, with two partners, building homes — many of them in the Wasaga Beach and Collingwood areas. In the spring of 1964, Andreetta got married and settled in North York. In November of that same year the couple’s first son, Steven, was born. Two years later, their second son, Jack, entered the world followed, in 1979, by their third son, Daniel. A year later, the family moved to Woodbridge. After one of his business partners passed

hall, the Pierre Berton Library, the Civic Centre Resource library, Kleinburg Public School and St. Jean de Brebeuf Catholic High School. But the most challenging project of his career to date, Ferdinando said, was a major addition to Havergal College, a girl’s private school in Toronto. What made it so challenging was that the new section had to match the original heritage building. “It’s very tough to match something that is so beautiful, (done) in the old-style,” he said. Over his lengthy career, Ferdinando has garnered numerous accolades, including a Golden Trowel. But, he, said, “the best day in my life” came in 2012 when Stefcon won six awards at the Ontario Masonry Design Awards, including an architectural design award for Kleinburg Public School, a structural design award for St. Jean de Brebeuf High School and an architectural design award for Pierre Berton library. Given all that, one might think he’d be ready to hang it up, but that’s not the case. Asked when he might retire, Ferdinando said: “I don’t know yet. I say all the time, ‘This is the last job.’ And after, when I finish (the job), I ask my son: ‘You got another job for me?’”

Sergio Tagliavini Jellinek their concerns. He really got his energy from young people,” said Falbo, who added, “Sergio was the youngest guy in the room in his thinking and his mentality. “One of his biggest legacies was his passion for young people. He was definitely my mentor.” Tagliavini was born in Genoa, Italy, in 1935 and grew up in Milan. He came to Canada in 1970 where he began his career in journalism. In 1973, he became editor of Corriere Canadese, Canada’s Italian-language daily newspaper, and produced public affairs programming for radio and TV shows for the ItalianCanadian community. In 1984, Tagliavini cofounded Lo Specchio, turning the Vaughan weekly newspaper into an authoritative

A pillar of the York Region media scene and the local Italian community has passed away. Sergio Tagliavini Jellinek, co-founder and co-editor of Lo Specchio, the Italianlanguage weekly newspaper that started in Woodbridge 32 years ago, died on Monday, Jan. 25. He was 80. Lo Specchio managing editor Giovanna Tozzi, who began working with Tagliavini back in 1973, said she will remember his, “frankness and honesty… a sense of humanity and compassion that are special, special gifts (he had) as a human being and as a professional.” She said she feels, “more than obliged to continue, in a very, very humble way (Tagliavini’s) dialogue with the people.” Rob Falbo, now business development manager at Metroland Media Toronto, began working for Lo Specchio back in the 1980s when he was just 19. “He really was an institution. His readers would go up and talk to him and tell him

voice for the Italian-Canadian community. Tagliavini was also a leader in that community, helping guide and lead the project for the Monument to the Italian Workers killed on the job. He received a number of achievement awards during his long career from Italy and Canada. Vaughan Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua released a statement upon hearing for Tagliavini’s death. “Sergio’s life was one of selfless service to the community. He embodied the values of honesty and decency and humility. He loved and believed in the important role the media plays in an open and democratic society. His long list of accomplishments is a testament to his great capacity and willingness to serve. He will be missed, but his legacy will long live on. On behalf of my colleagues on council and the citizens of Vaughan, I would like to express my deepest sympathies to his family and friends.” For Totti, the loss of her mentor and friend will have a lasting impact on her life and her job. “He’s just been a maestro, a guide, a person that knows particularly how important the job was, not a profession, but a job,” she said. Tagliavini leaves behind his wife Franca and daughter Simone. A private family-only service, as per his wishes, has been held.

The new Justin Trudeau majority Liberal government had a one-week session to pass a middle class tax-break bill last fall, but a week into its winter session, committee assignments have now been handed out. Two local MPs it seems have found themselves on committees that fit their backgrounds and areas of expertise. King-Vaughan Liberal MP

Deb Schulte, who had a long background as an environmental activist and advocate for sustainability before she became a Vaughan regional councillor from 2010-14. Appropriately enough, Schulte will now sit on the Standing Committee on the Environment and Sustainable Development. Vaughan-Woodbridge Liberal MP Francesco Sorbara, who was a corporate bond

research analyst with Scotiabank, has been named to the Standing Committee on Finance. Parliamentary standing committees oversee a government department or departments These committees are charged with the review of the relevant statute law, departmental operations and expenditures, and the effectiveness of the policies and programs of the department.

EDITORIAL

Be pro-active with infrastructure t was several years ago when plans for a link between Hwy. 400 and Hwy. 404, then known as the Bradford bypass, were quietly removed from the province’s long-term agenda. But there’s a movement to get that link back on the radar. Georgina Mayor Margaret Quirk, East Gwillimbury Mayor Virginia Hackson, Newmarket Mayor Tony Van Bynen and Bradford Mayor Rob Keffer were joined by York regional chairman Wayne Emmerson and other nearby mayors for a meeting with Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca. The focus of the meeting was the importance of the Hwy. 400/404 connecting link. And there’s little doubt it is important. Prior to 2008, the Transportation Ministry released a study that called for the route’s construction to be completed by 2021. At that time, then-mayor and current East Gwillimbury Councillor James Young was told by the province that the bypass was a bigger priority than the now-completed Hwy. 404 extension to Ravenshoe Road. But then, the province eliminated the bypass from its plans. Not everyone was upset with the move, but it certainly wasn’t well received by local politicians and supporters. “If we don’t plan congestion relief, such as the Bradford bypass and if we don’t see them becoming a reality, I really don’t know what’s going to happen. Our quality of life is already suffering and our economic quality of life is next; we can’t just make the assumption that people will continue to cope with it,” former Newmarket-Aurora MPP Frank Klees said in 2008. Those sentiments were echoed by then-regional chairman Bill Fisch, who noted the fact the route isn’t even on the map, quite literally, in the province’s Places to Grow legislation is simply unacceptable. Fast forward to 2016. Politicians are bracing for major growth and realize now is the time to act. By 2041, York Region’s population is projected by the prov-

vaughan CITIZE

Publisher Dana Robbins

ince to increase to 1.79 million, a bump of 650,000 compared to 2014 numbers. A significant amount of that growth will occur in the north. In Simcoe County, the population is expected to rise 80,000 to 707,000 in 2031. Waiting to come up with solutions after that growth is realized is simply poor planning. As it stands, highways 400 and 404 are viable north-south routes for commuters and transport businesses alike. But if you’re north of Hwy. 407, you know there’s no efficient way to move east or west between the two. And it’s safe to say things will only get worse. The link, which has been a hot topic among commuters, would reduce congestion on roadways south of Simcoe County and into York Region, while providing a more efficient connection between the two. “York Region and Simcoe County will be the size of Toronto by 2041, so we need to get the infrastructure in place to prepare for that increase in population,” Keffer said, noting he’s confident Del Duca understands the importance of the link. The minister indicated he will relay the mayors’ concerns to fellow cabinet ministers. Of course, this isn’t something that will be addressed overnight, but the link needs to be back on the province’s Growth Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe. It’s time we were more proactive when it comes to planning infrastructure. Learn from the logistics nightmare Newmarket endured when Davis Drive was expanded or from Toronto when traffic on Sheppard Avenue was affected for years when the subway extension went in. Both of those builds were made more difficult because of the buildup surrounding the sites. That’s not an issue of the Hwy. 400/404 link. At least not in the near future. Take advantage of the clean slate that exists and make plans to build the link in advance of growth, not to deal with it.

Family Day thoughts

O

ther than my h u s b a n d ’s birthday and Valentine’sDay, when I think of special days during the month of February, I think of Family Day. This year in Ontario it falls on Monday, Feb. 15. I think of this day as a reminder of how important family time is. Of course, as with Valentine’s Day, if it’s the only day that you show love and togetherness, your actions may appear somewhat disingenuous. However, if you see this as an opportunity to put in extra effort to show how much you care, then your actions will appear more sincere. The face of family has changed dramatically over the years. No longer is family conventionally defined by a mother, father and children. Now, family takes on many shapes. Not everyone is fortunate to be part of a family in which he or she feels secure, loved and supported. For some, family has been a huge disappointment. While some believe that

family members should be revered and respected no matter how they act towards one another, others feel that blood is not always thicker than water and that the friends they have chosen to be part of their inner circle have become symbolic of the family they created themselves. No matter who you choose to hang out with on Family Day, consider this an opportunity to focus on and show appreciation for one another. Here are some ideas for Family Day. Something our family loves to do on Family Day is to bring out old photo albums and videotapes or DVDs of years gone by. While going through my father’s belongings after he passed away a few months ago, I came across old report cards he had kept of my mother’s. My plan is to show my daughters some of my report cards and school projects from when I was a student. I’m doing this especially because I wish I would have seen my mom’s school records before she passed, so

that I could have discussed them with her and asked her questions. Enjoy a nice homecooked meal together or go out to a restaurant or order in, if you prefer. While eating together, take the opportunity to voice out loud the top three things that you appreciate about one another. Too often we think good thoughts about one another, but don’t always express them out loud. Put extra effort into turning off cell phones, computers and other forms of technology on Family Day so that you can focus on one another. Play a board game, pull out the kids’ markers and create a family masterpiece on a large piece of paper. Maybe trace around each of your hands on a piece of paper as a keepsake. Whatever you decide to do together, I’m wishing you a fabulous Family Day!

BRIEF

Cirelli named new captain of Oshawa Generals He scored both goals to lead the Oshawa Generals to a 2-1 win in the Memorial Cup final last May and now Woodbridge native Anthony Cirelli has been named cap-

tain of the Generals. The 18-year-old winger actually takes over the ‘C’ from another Woodbridge native, former teammate Michael Dal Colle, who was traded by the Generals to the Kingston Frontenacs on Jan. 1. Cirelli, who has 12 goals and 23 assists for 35 points in

41 games, made the Generals as a walk-on free agent last year. He was a big surprise and impressed enough that the Tampa Bay Lightning picked him in the third round of the NHL draft, 72nd overall, last June. “I am honoured to be the captain of this team, I am going to go out and be a

Imagination used the right way is limitless I have one and so do you. We use it constantly in almost every moment of every day, yet many of us seem convinced that we really don’t have one or feel that it is not as strong when we compare it to others. We link it to the arts, or problem solving, and can only seem to relate to it when we see children play. You’re using it right now as you try to figure out what I’m getting at. It’s your imagination. Imagination is not something that comes and goes, it’s a part of who we are at our core, yet we’ve somehow convinced ourselves that we only exercise this part of ourselves when we are put in creative environments. But isn’t your life a creative environment? Some of us are living our lives in regret, remembering the painful parts of our past and imagining how things should or could have been different if only we had made a different choice. Some of us are choosing to worry instead, imagining all of the scenarios that

Timothy Barlow It’s All Good could go wrong as we try to create some sense of certainty in a future that is anything but. In either case, we’re using our imagination in ways that are not serving us to create the life we say we want. Author Mark Twain once said: “You can’t depend on your eyes when your imagination is out of focus.” It is difficult, if not impossible, to see an opportunity that lays in front of us if our imagination continues to be fixated on a past we wish we didn’t have or a future that we don’t want to happen. It’s not that we don’t have a great imagination, it’s more

that we don’t have any of it to spare while we’re imagining those other things. So maybe it’s time to focus on the person you’ve always wanted to be and imagine what your life would be like if you healed those wounds, no longer regretting the person you once were. Maybe it’s time to start focusing on what could go right in your future and imagine how it would feel to have some faith and trust in your life again, instead of always worrying about what could go wrong. Or you could choose to hold on to those regrets and worries that continue to wipe away all the magic in your life and write all this imagination nonsense off as a silly pipe dream. Perhaps I am just a dreamer, but like the song says, I’m not the only one. Timothy Barlow is a perspective coach who lives and works in Vaughan. His column appears every other Thursday in The Vaughan Citizen. E-mail tbarlow@madtoglad.com

But, she said, that will only happen once the contributions and experiences of African Canadians become an integral part of the history of the country that is taught in schools and commemorated by governments and institutions year round. “We ain’t where we could be. We ain’t where we should be. We ain’t where we ought to be, but we ain’t where we was,” Augustine said, to open her address.

In 2009 she moved to the York board, serving two years as vice principal at Markham’s Bur Oak Secondary School followed by four years at Woodbridge College. Brown retired in 2015. During her lengthy career, Brown organized and ran an after school community homework club targeting new immigrants and less affluent students. She also ran workshops for youth and parents aimed at teaching them about time management, healthy relationships, and how to make the transition to post-secondary education and the workforce. And Brown spent 21 years as coordinator and program director for a two-week, co-ed residential camp while also appearing frequently as a guest speaker at college career forums and women’s conferences across the GTA. “In any role I found myself, only desire was to make a difference in the life of one student, one step at a time,” she said. “I hope and I pray that I made a difference,” she added. Along the way, Brown and her husband, Trevor, raised three children - Trevlin, Joel and Richard. She credited her family, many of whom attended the awards ceremony, for their unwavering support noting that it allowed her devote so much time and energy to giving back to the community. “My immediate family has truly been the wind beneath my wings and an integral part of who I am today,” she said borrowing a phrase from singer-songwriter Bette Midler. Brown also noted that she learned a great deal from her students, especially those who were rebellious, challenging or obstinate. Longtime York Region Police Staff Sgt. Tony Brown was also honored with a Deeds Speak Award in a surprise presentation. The award presentations were just one part of the Black History Month celebration featuring radio show host Kerry-Lee Crawford as

master of ceremonies. The event was also highlighted by spirited performances from Sounds of Motown, singer Jay Harmony and spoken word artist Al St. Louis. Former Liberal MP Jean Augustine delivered a stirring keynote address. Augustine was the driving force behind the effort to have Black History Month declared a national celebration. “We have to focus on the fact that this is an opportunity for us to celebrate, to highlight, to promote, to advance and get the history of people of African descent known (and) recognized as part of Canadian history,” she

Maple man didn’t ‘quit dreaming’

Vaughan Citizen | Thursday, February 4, 2016 |

When Xing Huang roused his wife from her sleep last Saturday morning to tell her he’d won more than $140,000 playing the lottery, she didn’t believe him. “I woke up my wife to share the good news. She thought I was joking – she said ‘Quit dreaming,’” the Maple resi-

dent explained while at the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto to claim his $140,375.80 Lotto Max windfall. Huang purchased his winning ticket for the Jan. 22 draw at Fortino’s on Major Mackenzie Drive in Maple. “I checked my numbers on OLG.ca the morning

after the draw. I matched six numbers plus the bonus number on the last line of my ticket,” he said. Huang said he plans to pay off some of his mortgage, make some investments and share some of the money with his family. – Submitted photo

FIND A BUYER’S AGENT. Real estate agents are often affiliated with sellers instead of buyer’s. This means their primary goal is to help the seller and not the buyer. When shopping around for a real estate agent, ask companies about their buyer’s agents. Buyers should always have someone with their interests in mind, and not the interests of the sellers. FIND SOMEONE WITH A TRACK RECORD. Real estate can be an exciting and financially rewarding industry in which to work. As a result, lots of people want to be real estate agents, even though few succeed and last a long time. When interviewing real estate agents, inquire about their history in the business. A more experienced agent will make things far less stressful and easier, and a long career indicates they are good at what they do. A real estate agent with a long history in the business will likely be a full-time agent as well. Prospective buyers should look for a full-time agent, which is not as common as some buyers might think. Many agents work part-time, and buyers could receive less attention as a result. DON’T PLACE TOO MUCH EMPHASIS ON AGENCY SIZE. Real estate agencies come in all shapes and sizes. When it comes to ability, the size of the agency should not factor in. A smaller independent agency can be just as qualified and reliable as one of the major franchise agencies. Buyers who find someone they trust should go with that person, regardless of how big or have previously purchased a home might small their agency is. already have a strong relationship with a GET A REFERRAL. real estate agent. But for those moving out of their current location or buying for Friends and family members who have been through the buying the first time, finding the right real estate process before might be great resources. Buyers looking in “Town agent requires some effort. Those in the X” who have friends or family already living there should consult market for an agent to help navigate the those friends or family and ask for any agent referrals. Those relocating because of work should ask their company to refer an home buying process should consider agent. Chances are companies have relocated employees in the the following tips. past and might have a strong relationship with an agency in town.

Finding a trustworthy and experienced real estate agent can help make the process of buying a home much less stressful.

How to Find the

RIGHT REAL ESTATE AGENT Buying a home is often a difficult thing to do. The stress of making such a big financial commitment is a struggle for many home buyers, whether they have purchased a home in the past or are doing so for the first time. One way to make the process a lot less anxiety-ridden is to work with a real estate agent you can trust. Those who

Transit Project Assessment Process GO Rail Network Electrification – Public Meetings Metrolinx, an agency of the Province of Ontario, is helping to transform the way the region moves by building a seamless, convenient and integrated transit network across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). As part of this project, we are expanding GO Transit to enable 15-minute service on most corridors with electrified trains, which will enable faster and more frequent service. Together, these infrastructure improvements will change how people move around Toronto and the region with four times the current number of GO train trips, service on evenings and weekends, and twice the number of trips during peak periods. Building on the GO Electrification Study completed in 2010, which looked at the electrification of the GO Transit rail system network, Metrolinx is currently undertaking environmental studies under the Transit Project Assessment Process (TPAP), in accordance with Ontario Regulation 231/08, to examine the conversion of several rail corridors from a diesel to an electric-based system. The project will include design and implementation of a traction power supply system (i.e. traction power substations and high voltage connections to Hydro One’s existing grid), as well as power distribution components (i.e. electrical power distribution facilities) located in the vicinity of the rail corridors. The Study Area (see map) includes six GO rail corridors, including potential locations for the electrical power supply and distribution facilities: • Union Station Rail Corridor • Lakeshore West Corridor – Strachan Avenue to Burlington • Kitchener Corridor – UP Express Spur (at Highway 427) to Bramalea • Lakeshore East Corridor – Don River to Oshawa GO Station • Barrie Corridor – Parkdale Junction to Allandale GO Station • Stouffville Corridor – Scarborough Junction to Lincolnville GO Station A series of public meetings are being held as part of the TPAP process to provide information about the scope of the project, environmental studies, design and engineering components, preliminary locations for traction power supply/distribution facilities, project timelines and next steps. Similar rate hikes expected to continue over next few years From front page

short term and the long term,” City Treasurer Laura Mirabella-Siddall said during a special finance committee meeting held Tuesday night. “Really, this means making sure that we have safe drinking water; that we have effective wastewater collection and that we’re managing out storm water well.” The overall increase is largely driven by the Region of York, which gets 73 per cent – $93.7 million — of the funds generated through water and wastewater bills, she noted. That goes to purchase drinking water from Toronto and Peel as well as sewage treatment costs, maintenance of watermains and reservoirs, among other things. To cover those costs, the Region pumped up its portion of the bill by 9 per cent. The remainder of the increase is driven by the city, which is responsible primarily for the distribution of drinking water to and collection of wastewater from 78,000 homes and 3,100 businesses as well as water quality testing, operating and maintenance costs. Similar rate hikes by the Region are slated to continue until 2020 then decline to near 3 per cent in 2021, Mirabella-Siddall said. With this year’s rate increases, the water and wastewater bills are expected to generate

$128.9 million this year. About $16.2 million of that will be poured into a reserve fund at the city to cover future replacement costs of aging infrastructure, she noted. But Vaughan still has a long way to go to build up enough money in its reserves to cover the full long-term replacement costs. “We should have close to $100 million in our water reserve and we currently have about $40 million,” Mirabella-Siddall said, adding the city plans to increase its contributions to reserves over the next few years to make up the shortfall. City hall watcher Richard Lorello implored councillors to seriously consider reviewing and changing the pricing model used to set water and wastewater rates, arguing it’s becoming unaffordable for some residents. He pointed out that rates have increased between 8 per cent and 10 per cent every year since 2009. “The total annual increase in 2016 over 2009 is a whopping $556… and that is a lot of money,” he said. “For someone making minimum wage, or between $10 and $20 an hour, trying to sustain a family, these kinds of rate increases are huge.” Council is expected to approve the new water and wastewater rates Tuesday, Feb. 16 at 1 p.m. If that happens, the increase will kick in April 1.

Collector, friend saw world through different light BY AMANDA PERSICO

or Pete Rylott, life was about how you saw the light. He was always surrounded by light – sunlight, black lights and Christmas lights. “He always lit the way with a path and some flowers,” said Rylott’s long-time friend Kimberly Tower, who was with him when he died. “He showed you a direction. Where you ended up going was your choice.” Rylott, a former industrial painter, died earlier this year from liver disease. He was 60. Rylott was very close with his mother, Kay. When she died, Rylott started drinking and was eventually diagnosed with hepatitis C. Eventually the drink took him in. While he experimented with drugs in his teens, alcohol was never his vice, Tower said. “I’m still so mad about it,” she said. “It’s like he wanted to join her. There was no changing his mind.” That was part of his extreme personality, she added. As an avid collector of anything Coca-Cola, his kitchen was adorned with vintage memorabilia from floor to ceiling. There are more than 10,000 tulips planted around his prop-

So, there’s Coca-Cola on every wall,” she said. “There is not a window here where you don’t see a garden he planted.” Over the years, Rylott planted thousands upon thousands of tulips around the property. He made Mount Albert his home in the late 1980s when he purchased an old farmhouse and renovated it to showcase the building’s unique wood structure. Rylott made it a point to get everything he needed locally, from food to prescriptions, car parts to hockey cards.

“He was always buying brakes... He got his license late in life. Maybe he was catching up.” He had a love of speed and lived life in the fast lane, Tower said. “He was always buying brakes,” she said. “He got his license late in life. “Adored by children, universally respected and an inspiration to her peers, Mrs. McCluskey was a tireless volunteer, quick to deflect the praise heaped on her.”

Tower said. “No hesitation. He was always peace and love.” Most in town knew Rylott’s house by the black light glow at night or by his trail of Christmas lights wrapped around every tree during the wintertime.

Black lights weren’t the only lights he was fascinated by. Every night, he watched the sunset over his eight-acre property. He even trimmed the trees on the far north side of his lot so he could have a good view of the sunset in the end.
