You won’t get far in a conversation with Ian Proudfoot without talking about community building and the role the newspapers he oversees as publisher have contributed to that goal. It’s a lifelong legacy that was recognized when he was honoured with the Ontario Medal for Good Citizenship in 2011 after being nominated by many community leaders. He was one of only 11 recipients from across the province to receive the award that year. “I’m really proud of the role we’ve played in building better communities. Vaughan-based Toppits Foods aims ‘to connect brand with people’ By Adam Martin-Robbins
amartinrobbins@yrmg.com
You know the old saw: Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, but teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. Well, the folks over at Toppits Foods in Vaughan would argue that you really ought to teach him how to cook it too. That’s precisely what they aim to do at the recently opened Culinary Inspiration Centre, located inside the company’s headquarters at 301 Chrislea Rd. “It’s a little taboo still for a lot of people out there so we want to have people overcome that and enjoy cooking with (seafood) and enjoy eating it,” said Ida Locco, a company spokesperson. To that end, Toppits is offering cooking workshops led by their two in-house chefs. For novices, there’s a threehour class dubbed Methods to Perfection that teaches diverse methods of cooking with seafood at a cost of $70 per person, including taxes. For this introductory workshop, there are three menus — International Oceans, Aloha and Opa! — each offered different days of the week and featuring different seafoodbased dishes. For more experienced cooks, there’s the four-hour Fast and Furious workshop, which is more in-depth and covers more advanced recipes at a cost of $85 per person. Again, there are three different menus – South of the Border, East Coast Cookery,

Feast in the Middle East — offered different days. In both workshops, regardless of level, attendees learn how to prepare and cook three appetizers and one entrée – which they will eat at the end. And we’re not talking about your basic fish and chips here. Take the International Oceans class, for example. The menu includes baconwrapped shrimp with basilgarlic stuffing, marinated tuna with Russian blue potato, salmon rillettes on an almond
touli and the main dish, pepper-crusted Trout with teriyaki sauce. “The classes are full on hands-on,” Samantha Mandarino, Toppits marketing specialist, said. “They each make the recipe themselves from start to finish.” In addition to cooking workshops, Toppits also offers private dining for lunch or dinner at $45 and $60 per person, respectively. The two-hour meals feature a preset, three-course menu, with two appetizers
and an entrée as well as a Toppits signature beverage. As part of the experience, diners are treated to an interactive demonstration of how to prepare their meal. The workshops and the private dining experiences are served up inside the bright, clean, and airy Culinary Inspiration Centre, featuring a state-of –the art, gourmet kitchen. This is new territory for Toppits, which opened its first retail store — offering fresh and frozen seafood, mari-
nades, sauces, pastas, herbs, appetizers and prepared meals — inside its Vaughan headquarters a little more than a year ago. Prior to that the seafood supplier’s focus was on importing fresh and frozen seafood products for the foodservice industry as well as producing a variety of branded products, sold in most major grocery store chains The hope is, of course, that helping people become more comfortable with seafood will translate into more customers for the company’s products. “It’s to connect the brand with people,” Mandarino said. “The main thing is that they would learn how to cook it and hopefully they would come into our store after and buy the products.” Toppits isn’t the only Vaughan-based food industry firm doing this sort of thing either. Weber, the barbecue company, also offers something similar at its Grill Academy inside its Canadian headquarters in West Woodbridge. This type of “engagement” or “experiential” marketing isn’t all that new, but it’s just starting to be used in the food industry, according to Mark Lee, a professor of retail management at Ryerson University. “The model of doing workshops in retail stores is not foreign because Home Depot has been doing it for years,” he said. “They would set up workshops and they would provide free guidance on home improvement tactics and now we’re just putting it in a retail setting where it’s about cooking.” Lee says there are generally three factors driving this approach to marketing. One is the evolving nature of retail shopping, which is

moving away from a simple transaction between consumer and seller. And that’s being driven, in part, by the rise of online retailers, which is keeping people from getting in their cars and driving to stores to do their shopping, he said. “The trend over the years has been to increase the experiential element of retail shopping,” he said. “Especially for grocery, a lot of it has been more of a utilitarian, functional way of buying things: we go, we buy what we need and we come out. … Workshops and classes provide an experience people can use and it makes them feel it is less of a necessity and more of an experience to go to these stores.” Lee says in some cases retailers are also responding to the increased appetite for knowledge, especially when it comes to food. “There’s a reason why the Food Network is becoming so popular,” Lee said. “People have a desire to learn and times are changing so retailers are less wanting to be a middleman where they’re just providing a transaction from the manufacturer to the consumer.” Lee also noted some retailers offer free workshops to push products that haven’t been selling well or in cases where a manufacturer has paid a premium for specialized marketing. It’s too early to say if the “experiential approach” will pay dividends for food industry retailers as it has in other sectors, Lee said. “It’s difficult to comment on proof of concept because it’s new,” he said.

Danger could lurk with pesky masked marauder
Story, hijab campaign ‘commendable’
W
e may have a raccoon trying to get in the attic, warned my husband earlier this
week. That explains the loud expletive I heard from him in the bathroom one morning just at daylight, when he looked out the upstairs window and was surprised to see a large raccoon on our garage roof. Of course, seeing a raccoon in early morning or at dusk is no surprise to anyone in any of our communities in York Region, whether rural or urban. But against the backdrop of a higher than usual number of raccoons with rabies in the Hamilton area, the appearance of any masked garbage-can marauder is provoking more concern than usual. Especially for pet owners. We are part-time owners of two dogs. That is to say, when my daughter has a long shift at her job in Richmond Hill, and her partner is also at work all day, she sometimes brings their two dogs to our place for “dog sitting”. Between my husband, son and myself, there is usually someone at home to let them out and provide food and affection (in that order) while their real owners are making money to pay for dog food and other life essentials. But whenever I let them out into our back yard after dark, I am very wary. Especially if they start barking more than usual. If they should tangle with a raccoon — or the skunk my neighbour and I both smelled recently — there could be a real health risk to the dogs and to us of rabies. As of Jan. 6, 12 cases of rabies in raccoons have been found in the Hamilton area, despite the fact that through an impressive vaccine program, rabies had nearly been eradicated in Ontario. We all know that rabies is a deadly viral disease, spread by bites and saliva of an infected animal, commonly bats and lately, raccoons. And many of us know that rabies is most often transmit-
Marney Beck ted to humans through dogs or even cats who have had encounters with infected wildlife. But did you know there are two kinds of rabies: dumb rabies and furious rabies? The dumb form leads to wild animals being unusually friendly or less fearful of humans, and being depressed or hiding in isolated places (hopefully not in my roof). The furious variety makes the animal more excited or aggressive. So while we have no proof rabies is in York Region, the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Ontario’s 36 public health units remind us it’s more important than ever to ensure our pets are vaccinated against rabies. Not only is it smart protection for your pets and for you, it’s the law. The other suggestions from the experts are harder to follow: “always supervise pets when outside in the yard, feed pets indoors and keep your distance from wildlife”. But how many of us open the back door to a fenced yard, as I do, to let pets out? When it’s dark, even when I turn on the back porch light, it’s extremely difficult to make out two black dogs and what they are or are not doing. My daughter now lives on a fenced acre of land in a rural area. I can only imagine how much higher the potential is for the two dogs to have an unfriendly meeting with a raccoon. Vaccinated though they are, I don’t think I’ll be welcoming their doggie licks and kisses as much the next time they visit.
Re: Lifting the veil on the hijab, Jan. 14. The bonding together of Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamat’s Hira Muneeb and Hena Malik and The Liberal’s Kim Zarzour, has produced a fine commentary on the virtues of the hijab, its relevance to a Muslim woman’s religious obligation, the freedom of choice and the eradication of the myth that the hijab is a sign of an oppressed woman. To the contrary, and as has been rightly exemplified, the hijab signifies the chastity, state of virtue and morality of a pure and unblemished woman who, unlike their western counterparts, does not allow herself to be sexualized, exploited and tossed around like a sex toy to be abused physically and then left in the wilderness. Organizers and contributors to this very sensible, educational and poignant campaign need to be recognized and commended. I hope Zarzour’s bold and practical experiment to wear a hijab and stroll in public places will help to alleviate the fear with which Muslim women have been engulfed. They can proudly go around their vari-

ous tasks in public and should feel even stronger in the choice they have made. So also will it be a catalyst for the general public to tolerate, respect and accept the choice their fellow Canadians have made. Organizers’ unique and innovative invitation to the public to learn about what it means to be a Muslim female and try on the hijab will go a long way in cementing relations with women of all communities. As well, it is winter and you do need a head covering, religious or not. Coincidentally, the Huffington Post reports that “the Italian fashion house Dolce Gabbana designers have released its first collection of abayas and hijabs and Forbes has called it the company’s smartest move in years. A growing number of Western fashion brands, including Tommy Hillfiger, DKNY, and Mango, are realising that it is important to start catering to Muslim women”.

Police arrest pair believed responsible for Vaughan, King bank robberies By Jeremy Grimaldi
jgrimaldi@yrmg.com
Police in Barrie have caught the two men believed to have robbed banks in King City on Saturday and Vaughan last Thursday. On Tuesday at 10:30 p.m., Barrie Police stopped two men in a car reported stolen in Barrie. Both men fled the car but were caught by officers and members of the Barrie Police K9 Unit. The men were believed to have been responsible for bank robberies in Barrie on Jan. 6 and Jan 11 and other robberies in Toronto, York and Peel regions. A 16-year-old Sarnia man and 24-year-old Alberta man have been charged with the two Barrie robberies. The men were held overnight Tuesday at Barrie Police Service for a bail hearing yesterday. Meanwhile a King bank teller has been credited with remaining calm during a highpressure situation after the second bank robbery in the area in less than a week. Last Thursday, the Royal Bank at the corner of Weston and Rutherford roads in Vaughan was robbed by two young looking robbers after they passed a note to a teller explaining they were armed and advising her to hand over money. Two days later, the TD Bank at King Road and Keele Street was targeted under similar circumstances, but this time by only one
man. One of the bank employees, who did not give her name, said the teller, who is also a youth counsellor during the summer, dealt with the situation so expertly that no one in the bank even knew it was happening. “Everything was fine,” the woman at the branch said. “It was actually low key. He gave the teller the note and it was almost like a non-incident.” She said that after being handed a note advising that the robber had a gun, the teller handled it so well that the manager of customer service, who was standing right behind him, didn’t even know it was happening. “We never saw a gun,” she added. “He was young looking, but was wearing a hoodie.” It was a different story in Vaughan after a man who was in the bank, Tony Ciamarra, saw the teller who was handed the note being consoled after the robbery. “My daughter worked at a bank in Maple and went through a robbery,” he said. “I know what it can be like. She was petrified by it. It was a big deal for her.” The teller complied with the demand and the suspects fled on foot. Anyone with information is asked to call the York Regional Police Hold-Up Unit at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 6631 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

o, how badly do you want a subway for York Region? Badly enough to have to pay hundreds of millions more in tax dollars over the life of the project? That was the news delivered by TTC CEO Andy Byford late last week as he unveiled the latest bombshell about the delayed and over-budget Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension (TYSSE). Planned more than a decade ago with an initial cost of about $2.6 billion, the six-stop, 8.6-km extension that extends northwest from Downsview station into Vaughan will now hit $3.2 billion. The jump in costs includes a bump of $150 million Byford asked for last year and received to hire private firm Bechtel to come in to help manage the project and another $400 million he said last week is needed to deal with claims
Tim Kelly and other expenses. York’s cut of the two requests could amount to as much as $250 million more than originally expected. The really bad news is that Byford couldn’t guarantee the bill won’t be even higher before everybody finally gets paid. You see, as is common in these mega projects that have complicated contracts, contractors have claims outstanding against the TTC for all sorts of issues. And there could well be expensive litigation that will be prohibitively expensive.

Byford refused to discuss the claims with media, in fact he didn’t rule out the possibility more would be coming in future, and said the money would be needed to deal with them. In a press conference on the busy York University subway stop site last Friday, Byford played the blame game, suggesting many mistakes were made with the project before he was hired as TTC CEO in 2012. But he said he’s now accountable for what happens to the project and promised that it is 80 per cent complete and will open on time by Dec. 31, 2017. The real question is will it all be worth it and will it end up costing taxpayers even more money before it finally opens.

11 Critical Home Inspection Traps to be Aware of Weeks Before Listing Your Vaughan Home for Sale
Vaughan - According to industry experts, there are over 33 physical problems that will come under scrutiny during a home inspection when your home is for sale. A new report has been prepared which identifies the eleven most common of these problems, and what you should know about them before you list your home for sale. Whether you own an old home or a brand new one, there are a number of things that can fall short of requirements during a home inspection. If not identified and dealt with, any of these 11 items could cost you dearly in terms of repair. That’s why it’s critical that you read this report before you list your home. If you wait until the building inspector flags these issues for you, you will almost certainly experience costly delays in the close of your home sale or, worse, turn prospective buyers away

altogether. In most cases, you can make a reasonable pre-inspection yourself if you know what you’re looking for, and knowing what you’re looking for can help you prevent little problems from growing into costly and unmanageable ones. To help homesellers deal with this issue before their homes are listed, a free report entitled “11 Things You Need to Know to Pass Your Home Inspection” has been compiled which explains the issues involved. To hear a brief recorded message about how to order your FREE copy of this report call toll-free 1- 800-324-3520 and enter 1003. You can call any time, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. of the work, risk mitigation strategies, litigation management costs and the forecasted cost exposure for unresolved claims and litigation matters. The subway extension saw start up delays, poor performance by some contractors and scope and design changes that were not factored into either the schedule or the project budget at the time, the report said. The cost overrun is not unexpected, York Region CAO Bruce Macgregor said. TTC CEO Andy Byford defended the need for the additional $400 million in funding during a media tour of the York University subway station that Byford said is “65 per cent complete.” Provision needs to be made to the tune of an additional $400 million to cope with the maximum exposure to claims, Byford said. “We’re not saying that that money is gone, we’re not saying that money is committed, we are saying that up to $400 million, that amount of money needs to put aside for known claims, claims that we know

After having to pitch in an additional $92 million last spring toward the over-budget and delayed extension of the Spadina subway, York Region could now have to contribute another $160 million, according to a TTC report on the project released last Friday. The six-stop subway extension to Vaughan is another $400 million over budget, it stated. York’s share of the cost overrun is $160 million, while Toronto would owe $240 million. The total cost of the project is now projected to be $3.2 billion, up from the original forecast of $2.6 billion The additional funds are needed to cover a variety of extra costs such as known claim settlements, identified changes in scope that have not been finalized with the contractors, under-estimated budget for the remaining project scope, co-ordination

have merit and do need to be funded in the future,” Byford said. The TTC CEO defended his work on the project over the past three years and said he was confident the line would open by the end of December 2017. When the project went over budget by $150 million last March, including York’s share of $60 million, Byford said he would spend the rest of 2015 determining the final cost overrun tally, Macgregor said. “It’s not a surprise. We fully expected him to be reporting,” he said. While Macgregor will be bringing a report to council next month outlining the financial implications of the cost overrun, he acknowledged spending the extra money on the subway means money not being spent on other transportation or transit priorities.

Gwillimbury Express, were launched. In 2012, he was named publisher of Metroland’s central division, which includes newspapers stretching from Toronto to North Bay. Through it all, including changes to Metroland and to the industry, Proudfoot’s inspiration has been his dedication to the power of community building. “I’m a big believer that doing the right things for the right reasons is the only way to run a business and if you choose profit, you’re going to make bad decisions. And I wish more companies understood that. You can create a tremendous amount of pride in your team when you build communities,” he said, testament to his ever-ready penchant for praising those around him. Proudfoot’s legacy of community building is something shared by Robbins, who said he and Proudfoot are, in many ways, cut from the same cloth. “I think what readers can expect, what is evident in my track record, is a big commitment to community. I am a passionate believer in the role our newspapers play in our communities and in our country. We have the society we have because of the nature of the press freedom in our country,” said Robbins, whose division will expand to include Mississauga and Brampton. “They can expect to see that passion reflected in our newspapers. That passion is already there from our journalists, but it will certainly resonate in the publisher’s office.” Robbins is a strong advocate on behalf of people living in marginalized or impoverished communities. Robbins has been married to his wife, Catherine, for 32 years. The Hamilton couple has three children — twin girls Dana and Nicola and son Jacob. Robbins had nothing but praise for Proudfoot, with whom he has worked for many years. “I think he’s everything that publishers aspire to be. He’s committed to our communities, he’s committed to our craft and he’s very much influenced as a leader by the values he holds near and dear.”

Distracted driving vigilante charged with impersonating police in Vaughan A Vaughan motorist, who allegedly threatened to issue a distracted driving ticket to another driver, has been charged with impersonating a police officer. The incident occurred Friday, at about 3:30 p.m., when a woman, driving north on Dufferin Street, just north of Steeles Avenue, noticed she was being followed by a Toyota SUV. The Toyota pulled up in the lane next to her and both vehicles were stopped side by side in traffic.
The driver of the Toyota rolled down his window and flashed a flashlight at her to get her attention. The male driver was wearing what the victim believed was a police jacket, so she rolled down her window to speak to him. The suspect identified himself as a police officer and began to yell at the victim for texting and driving and threatened to give her a $500 ticket. When traffic began to move again, the interaction ended and the victim proceeded northbound.
At the time the incident, an officer was in the area conducting increased plainclothes patrols in response to recent increases in break and enters in the region. The officer observed a portion of the interaction and felt it appeared suspicious. The officer was able to locate the victim, who advised him of what had taken place. York Regional Police charged a 58-year-old Vaughan man for impersonating a police officer on two occasions in Vaughan.
Steven Boan is to appear in a Newmarket court Feb. 11. Police are reminding motorists if you are approached by someone who identifies himself/herself as a police officer, you can request to see their badge and photo identification to verify their identity. If the officer cannot produce identification and you are suspicious, contact York Regional Police directly at 1-866-876-5423. If you are driving and you suspect that an individual is not a police
officer, maintain current speeds, obey all traffic laws and proceed to the nearest police station. Use your cellphone to contact police if you suspect the person attempting to stop you is not a legitimate police officer. Ask the dispatcher to send a supervisor to your location in a marked police car. Anyone who has experienced a similar situation or who has information on these incidents is asked to contact the York Regional Police at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 7470.

Those believed responsible for the Vaughan bank robbery were arrested Tuesday in Barrie. Unfortunately, there’s more. Between Oct. 1 and Dec. 31, 2015, there were a shocking 145 break and enters, which represents a 69-percent increase from the same threemonth period in 2014, when there were 86 in the city. So far in January, there have been 44 break and enters. According to police, this is due to an overwhelming increase in the number of people working as organized units in York Region. In one particular group, police said there are about 100 people, some of whom are working their way through the deportation process. There might be some relief for Vaughan homeowners after the arrest of Lasha Shengelia and Roma Sibashvili, who are suspects in dozens of break-ins three days before Christmas. On Tuesday, another man, Wrayal Dacosta, from Toronto, who is a suspect in several daytime entries, was arrested at Weston and Langstaff roads. Sometimes, Det. Sgt. Don Cardwell said he feels like he’s just “just putting out fires”, stamping out rises for a spell before they reappear. This was the case in 2015, when Maurice Beckles was caught up in a major York police investigation, released and then caught up in another only months later. In response to the recent crime spike, police are contemplating a couple of initiatives. One involves potentially forming a full-time team to deal with break and enters. The other initiative involves police meeting with Canada’s Border Services Agency members Friday. Discussions will centre around how to better deal with individuals committing crime while awaiting deportation. For now, police have said they are stepping up patrols in Vaughan and working with police from Richmond Hill and Markham on finding those groups or individuals responsible. Const. Andy Pattenden said a number of factors come into play including this winter’s warmer weather and a lack of snow, something robbers don’t like because it captures their footprints. Criminals are noticing that residential entries are garnering more payoff than street-level robberies and present less risk and similar penalties in the courts, police said.
Vaughan residents have also witnessed five warm-up thefts in which thieves take cars that are warming up in people’s driveways. Since the New Year, five cars – including Porsches and Mercedes – have been stolen in this fashion, often being shipped to Africa to fill out order in shipping containers within hours of the theft, police said. Const. Andy Pattenden said police have taken a number of steps including increasing residential patrols and releasing information to the pubic. “We’re just asking

Thornhill residents call 12-storey condo project ‘ridiculous’ By Simone Joseph
sjoseph@yrmg.com
How high should a proposed new Thornhill condo be? How much intensification, including new housing and businesses, is the right amount for an existing community? These issues were on the minds of residents gathered last week to discuss a proposed development project on the southwest corner of Yonge Street and Uplands Avenue in Thornhill, north of Clark Ave-
ect. The name of the owner is Lemine Investments. Most residents gathered at Thornhill Public School for the 7 p.m. open house were worried the proposed development, including a condo and townhouses, would ruin the character of the area. One resident pointed out that the Uplands neighbhourhood is a beautiful, upper-class area in Vaughan. “As a community, we have got to stand up. It’s a Forest Hill, a Rosedale,” said Andrew Baldwin. “It (the development)

The application has not yet been submitted. The open house last Thursday night was presented by Ryan Guetter, a vice president with urban design and consulting group Weston Consulting, and Clifford Korman, partner/ architect with Kirkor Architects, to show residents in the area plans for the residential proj-

It is very far off.” Guetter pointed out that the development could have a positive effect, since it will introduce mixed uses to the area — including retail, offices and townhouses, promoting the walkability of the area. As if anyone had to tell you, your commute times are getting longer, according to the latest Ministry of Transportation travel time study. In particular, you’re spending more time in your car during the afternoon rush hour trying to get where you’re going, the study said. “Focusing on the a.m. peak period, it’s no wonder our corridors down in the southern municipalities are congested. We know that they’re congested and that is reflected in the incremental travel time it’s taking to go through these areas,” Stephen Collins, York Region’s director of infrastructure management and the project management office, told a committee meeting. “The p.m. period is actually worse than the a.m. period. The (road) network is more congested and there is more delay during that p.m. peak period.” The study details commuter travel times on roads and highways in the Greater Toronto Area in 2014. Although the study is conducted every two years, York didn’t participate in the 2012 evaluation because the region believed significant road construction, especially in the Hwy. 7 and Yonge Street corridors, would unfairly skew the results, Collins said. York’s 2014 results show travel times are getting longer compared to the 2010 results. During the morning rush, it is now taking commuters on many regional roads and highways in the region twice as long to get to work or other destinations compared to off-
York’s slowest moving roads during the morning commute are: • Keele Street southbound from Langstaff Road to Hwy. 7 • Centre Street westbound from Dufferin Street to Hwy. 7 • Keele Street southbound from Major Mackenzie Drive to Rutherford Road • Yonge Street southbound from Hwy. 7 to Steeles Avenue • Hwy. 7 westbound from Woodbine Avenue to Leslie Street • Davis Drive eastbound from Yonge to Leslie (which was under extensive construction for the vivaNext bus rapidway) • Donald Cousens Parkway southbound from Hwy. 7 to Steeles • Hwy. 7 eastbound from Leslie to Woodbine • Davis Drive westbound from Leslie to Yonge • 16th Avenue from Woodbine to Leslie The slowest moving roads during the p.m. peak period are: • Leslie northbound from Hwy. 407 to 16th • Rutherford westbound from Keele to Weston Road • Woodbine northbound from Steeles to Hwy. 7 • Hwy. 7 westbound from Woodbine to Leslie • Keele southbound from Langstaff to Hwy. 7 • Davis Drive westbound from Leslie to Yonge • Rutherford eastbound from Weston to Keele • Hwy. 7 eastbound from Woodbine to Kennedy Road • Hwy. 7 westbound from Keele to Weston • 16th eastbound from Leslie to Woodbine
peak times. Vehicles are travelling at about 30 km/h rather than the posted 60 km/h speed limit on those congested roads, the study said. In the afternoon peak period, travel speed was reduced by almost 70 per cent, with many commuters inching homewards at about 20 km/h. There is more congestion during the afternoon rush hour as commuters make more discretionary trips, such as picking up groceries or taking their children to activities, Collins said. Anyone heading up and down Hwy. 404 on a regular basis knows how snarled the highway is consistently. It’s important to note the

section of Hwy. 404 between 16th Avenue and Hwy. 401 is the most congested and slowest operating section of the provincial freeway network in both the morning and afternoon peak period, Collins said. Traffic congestion ranks as the No. 1 concern of York residents, Collins said. Different levels of government are addressing the problem, he said. Collins pointed to the province completing the extension of Hwy. 404 to Ravenshoe Road in 2014 and its plans to widen Hwys. 404 and 400 and the region’s significant efforts to upgrade traffic signal controllers and optimize traffic signal coordination.

Electricity, clean running water, grocery and clothing stores, cars, public transportation, a bed, a shower, stoves, dishwashers, hospitals, public schools, employment. Just a small sample of some of the amazing things we are blessed to have in our daily western lives, yet go onto any social media website and what will you hear most often? Complaints, bitterness and jealousy, because it’s still “not enough” when compared to what the elite of the world have, and continue to acquire. According to Oxfam, an international confederation whose focus is finding solutions to poverty and injustice, the richest one per cent now has as much wealth as the rest of the world combined, but does that necessarily make us poor? The average Canadian may not be part of that top one percent, but according to the Global Rich List, a website that brings awareness to worldwide income disparities, an annual net income of $32,400 puts you in the top two percent globally. $25,000, puts you in the top 4 per cent.
Timothy Barlow It’s All Good From one viewpoint it’s true that there is a huge discrepancy between us, and that elite class, but from another angle it could be argued that we are them, or at the very least, a part of the problem as we still sit relatively close to the top. But how does someone who’s making 25k a year feel empathetic to those less fortunate in the rest of the world while barely scraping by? Is there anything wrong with striving for more? Of course there isn’t, and maybe both are possible. I think that if we truly care about helping the other 95 per cent in finding justice and equity, recognizing our own
position on this totem pole might be a good place for us to start. Although we may feel the injustice of looking up, it’s important that we glance down as well at times and examine our relative position. Hopefully a feeling of appreciation soon follows. While it’s true that we may not have all the luxuries available to us in the world, I think it’s fair to say that we’re doing better than average, yet we’re so used to it that we often take it for granted. A little more gratitude may not solve the financial inequities in our world but I’ve got to believe it will help. How can we assist others to have more in their life if we‘re not grateful for what we already have? Awareness and appreciation are the stepping-stones on that path to gratitude. So ask yourself, what could you appreciate today?

Woodbridge school steps up with swab clinic By Adam Martin-Robbins
amartinrobbins@yrmg.com
Dozens of students and staff from a Woodbridge high school have stepped up to try to help a local toddler diagnosed with a potentially life-threatening immunodeficiency disease and desperately in need of a bone marrow transplant. A stem cell swab clinic held Thursday at Emily Carr Secondary School, in the Islington Avenue and Rutherford Road area, attracted 102 people, mostly students and teachers, between the ages of 17 and 35. Alessia Channell, one of seven students who organized the event as an assignment for their Grade 11 leadership class, was thrilled with the turnout. “It’s great,” she said. “I didn’t think we were going to get this many people.” Those who showed up took about five minutes out of their day to fill in the necessary paperwork and undergo four cheek swabs to collect cell samples used to determine if they’re a potential donor for Austin (his family has requested his last name not be used). The one-and-a-half year old has been diagnosed with Chronic Granulomatous Disease, a rare and potentially deadly disease that can only be cured through a bone marrow transplant. His parents were tested and aren’t compatible donors, so they’ve been reaching out to the community to find someone who is a match. Amir Khodaparast, 18, was the first one through the door on Thursday morning. “I’ve seen people affected not only by this disease, but several different diseases and this is my chance to help and it doesn’t even take that much of an effort,” he

Students Colin Tarnachowicz and Samatar Mumin during a bone marrow swab event at Emily Carr Secondary School last Thursday. said. “So I came here to give back to the community because I’ve seen people go through pain and I don’t want that to happen to anyone.” Alyson Guyatt came out because she can empathize with Austin’s family. “I haven’t been affected by anything like this personally, but I could imagine if someone in my family needed a transplant then you would want anyone to try and help,” said the 26-year-old math teacher. Those who turned up at the school clinic are now registered with the OneMatch Stem Cell and Marrow Network so even if they’re not a compatible donor for Austin, they might turn out to be for someone else. “The support is amazing from the community and these students to help Austin and other kids,” said Laura Camerlengo, Austin’s aunt. “Hopefully, other students will learn from this and do something to save another child’s life.” UPCOMING Austin’s family has organized another clinic Thursday, Jan. 21 at St. Clare of Assisi Roman Catholic Church, 150 Saint Francis Ave., between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m.

TRANSPORTATION
More freight trains through Vaughan? BY LISA QUEEN
lqueen@yrmg.com
A preliminary proposal to create dedicated passenger travel on the GO Transit Milton and Kitchener lines would reroute a significant amount of freight trains through Markham and Vaughan, a York Region official says. The freight trains would run on the east-west Canadian National Railway (CN) line, crossing the region north of Steeles Avenue, Stephen Collins, York Region’s director of infrastructure management and the project management office, told a committee meeting. Dedicated passenger travel on the Milton and Kitchener lines is needed to accommodate the provincial government’s promised regional express rail in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. Metrolinx, the agency that manages transportation planning in the GTHA, plans to introduce improved service on the Milton and Kitchener GO train lines. Even building a new rail link will not fully separate freight and passenger traffic, meaning more freight trains running through Markham and Vaughan if the propos-
al is approved, said Collins, adding a number of other infrastructure improvements would be needed to accommodate the proposal. “While separation of through freight traffic from GO Transit services is positive, it would move more freight traffic through the cities of Markham and Vaughan,” a report to the committee stated. “Local communities would be impacted by additional rail traffic through nuisance impacts, in particular, noise and dust. The volume of dangerous and/or hazardous goods moving through York Region would also increase.” Regional council is expected to approve a resolution Thursday asking Metrolinx to consult with the region, Markham, Vaughan and Richmond Hill before proceeding with additional detailed studies relating to the re-routing of freight rail. “This could be an impact to the three municipalities to the south. A lot more freight going through than what it is now,” regional chairperson Wayne Emmerson said. “I know there’s lots of freight (already) going through, but this will take it
off the south end of Toronto and put it all on ours, up near us. Now, it is right at the border, but it will have an impact to our residents, so, hopefully, the consultation will give us an idea what they are going to do.” Continuing to develop transit is a council priority in Vaughan and the city is actively involved and providing input on numerous transportation studies, including the provincial regional express rail initiative, Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua said. “While passenger and freight rail is not under the city’s jurisdiction, we will continue to work with our government partners and the rail industry as part of our regular dialogue with CN Rail and CP Rail to ensure residents’ concerns are addressed,” he said in an email. “The city will participate in consultations being led by Metrolinx to protect the safety of our residents and to advance the Metrolinx regional transportation plan so that our residents can receive better transit services.” Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti and Richmond Hill Mayor Dave Barrow could not be reached for comment.

Jean Murray: ‘Inspiration Lady’ remembered Helped form Helping Hands group in Vaughan to aid needy local families at Christmas time BY ADAM MARTIN-ROBBINS
amartinrobbins@yrmg.com
W
hen Bob Murray hears Gordon Lightfoot’s tune Inspiration Lady, it always makes him think of his late wife, Jean. “I listen to that and it’s just Jeanie to a T,” he said. “In the song, it goes: ‘She’s always got something on her mind,’ and Jeanie always had something on her mind.” Jean was born Feb. 1, 1959, in Calgary; the youngest of James and Charlotte Cameron’s three children. In 1966, her family moved east, settling in Thornhill. After high school, Jean studied social work at Centennial College and landed a job at the Canadian Mental Health Association, teaching life skills to people who had anxiety, depression and bipolar disorder. While vacationing in Cuba in 1979, she met Bob, a Towers department store manager.
The pair began dating, off and on at first, and eventually married on Oct. 3, 1981. They moved around a bit, but eventually settled in Woodbridge in the mid-’80s. Along the way, the couple had two sons, Patrick was born in 1983 and Alex followed in 1985. Jean, who had bipolar disorder, continued working for a few years after Alex was born, but eventually had to give up her job. She also had to surrender her driver’s licence. “She was good-natured about it,” Bob said. “She’d say, ‘I worked with people who suffered from anxiety and depression and bipolar disorder and I guess I caught it.’” Some days she was full of energy and eager to take on the world, other days she had trouble getting out of bed, Bob said. But Jean refused to let her ill–Bob Murray ness stop her from leading an active, fulfilling life. “She had a lot of grit in her and she wasn’t going to let it defeat her,” he said.

Jean Murray (right) with childhood friend Dr. Sue MacColl. When the boys were young, Jean joined the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) at Pine Grove Public School, where she happily took on any job that had to be done. “If you ever asked her for help or you ever needed anything, she’d be the first one there to volunteer,” said longtime friend Judie Pezzetta, who also sat on the PTA. “No matter what was going on, she would always say, ‘What do you need or what can I do?’ That’s what I really liked the most about her, was her kindness, her thoughtfulness and
always being there when you needed somebody.” In 2005, Jean, Pezzetta and other mothers from the school founded Helping Hands and began raising money to help local families in need at Christmas time. Jean also volunteered in the tuck shop at Etobicoke General Hospital and would take the bus there several times a week. Bob credits that –Judie Pezzetta job with helping her reduce the amount of medication she was taking. “That was the best thing. She

had a purpose and a reason to get up,” he said. “She would go four or five days a week. … She loved to talk to people and she got along great with all the staff.” She was doing so well, in fact, they were planning to visit Ireland in June 2010. In anticipation of that trip, Jean joined a gym and signed up with a personal trainer. “She said, ‘You know, my greatest desire is to be as healthy as possible, to feel as good as I can possibly feel,’” Bob recalled. Sadly, they never made it overseas. Jean suffered a cardiac arrest and died March 6, 2010. She was 51. “It devastated us,” Pezzetta said. “She was one of those people that there aren’t enough of in the world. … She was a wonderful woman and a wonderful friend and I’ll never forget her.” A flag at Etobicoke General Hospital was lowered in her memory. Bob is certain, if Jean had lived a few years longer, she’d have joined the efforts to stamp out the stigma around mental illness that began in earnest with the Bell Let’s Talk Campaign about five years ago. “I think that Jeanie would have been the type of person who would have gone out and talked to people,” he said. “She’d seen it from both sides.”
