As her 90-year-old husband, Laszlo, lies dying in a nearby bedroom, Emma Perlaky’s heart breaks. “The emotion of him being sick and the realization there is no way out… When we had to realize there was no recovery from here on, that was really hard, really hard,” she said as tears welled up in her eyes. “We used to think, ‘What will we do in the summer?’ Now, there is no tomorrow any more.”

Offered help Married for 45 years, 73-year-old Perlaky meets virtually all of Laszlo’s needs in their Thornhill home, from providing personal hygiene and cooking meals to monitoring his vital signs and getting him to medical appointments. She has been offered help with things such as bathing assistance for Laszlo many times by the Central Community Care Access Centre (CCAC), which connects residents in most of York Region and south Simcoe County with the care they need at home and in the community. But Perlaky wants to care for her husband herself, with occasional help See pg. 28.

Woodbridge Legion members were left reeling after a break-in at the local branch earlier this month that saw just more than $1,000 in cash stolen and left the non-profit organization with a hefty repair bill. “We’re all shocked, shaken up and very, very upset,” said Josie Fedele, a spokesperson for Royal Canadian Legion, Mackenzie Branch 414. “It’s just awful.” The local Legion hall is tucked back on a quiet side street off Islington Avenue, just south of Hwy. 7, that runs parallel to the Humber River. Fedele said early in the morning on July 4 a thief or thieves tried to get into the building by prying open two rear doors. When that failed they smashed a large window and entered through the boardroom. Every padlocked cupboard as well as filing cabinets, a lock box and the bar’s cash register were pried open, Fedele said. Between the stolen cash and the repair bill, the Legion is going to be out nearly $10,000, which it can’t really afford, Fedele said. York Regional Police are investigating, Fedele said, but so far they don’t have any “viable suspects”.

Thieves smashed a window to get into Royal Canadian Legion, Mackenzie Branch 414 on July 4. $1,000 in cash was taken.

YORK REGIONAL POLICE HANDOUT

Investigators with the York Regional Police hold-up unit are seeking public assistance in identifying a suspect following a gas station robbery in Vaughan. On Saturday, July 4, at about 2 a.m., officers were called to a gas station located in the area of Hwy. 27 and Hwy. 7 following reports of a robbery. A lone male suspect entered the gas station armed with a handgun. The suspect stole cigarettes and cash, then fled the scene on foot.

The employee at the gas station was the only occupant and was not injured. Responding officers searched the area but were unable to locate the suspect. The suspect is described as: - Male, white, possibly an Italian accent - Short, dark hair - Wearing a white cloth or bandanna over his face, black shirt and black pants. - Carrying a black handgun. The investigation is ongoing.

Investigators from the hold-up unit remind business owners of the importance of maintaining and updating video surveillance equipment. Quality images help to identify suspects, can aid in arrests and have a tremendous impact during court proceedings. Anyone with information is

Impending senior boom affects us all

A

ccording to the region, York’s senior population will increase by nearly 150 per cent in a two-decade span that ends in 2031. That growth is nearly four times faster than the growth rate of the overall population. So, why should you care? Maybe you’re not a senior citizen now — you might even be years away from retirement and old age, but that doesn’t mean you should ignore impending changes.

areas such as long-term care, paramedic services, land-use planning, public health and transportation. In 2011, there were about 125,700 residents aged 65 or older living in the region, making up 12 per cent of the population, according to a new report. By 2031, there are expected to be more than 311,250 seniors and they will make up 21 per cent of the population. Why the growth? There are multiple reasons, including the high rate of people retiring to the area, but also York seniors are living longer than the provincial and national average. That’s because of our high quality of life, research says. But if you’re in your, say, mid30s, you may still be wondering why you should care, right? First off, jobs might be even harder to come by. “There was once a perception you reach 65, you retire,” Gonsalves said. But people are now working well into their 70s, Community Home Assistance to Seniors CEO Christina Bisanz said. And, the surging senior population means government will have to focus on providing services to that aging population. There is no doubt a soaring senior population will have an impact on virtually every sector of society, but, unfortunately, no one knows for certain how significant the impact will be. “I don’t think this has hit the radar yet,” Regional Councillor John Taylor said. “It will soon. I don’t know the scope of the challenge. I know it won’t be small.” So, just because your retirement date seems a long way off now, you’ll be served well to pay attention to impending changes and speak up to municipal politicians to ensure your voice is heard.

As any baby boomer will tell you, your ‘golden years’ will come a lot sooner than you may think — a time when you will likely depend on a different level of services, but the anticipated high growth rate will impact many people before they even approach their 60s. This kind of growth is a game changer. “We will feel the impact right across everything we do in York Region. We will feel the impact right across every service we provide,” according to Lisa Gonsalves, director of strategies and partnerships with York Region’s community and health services department. Late last month, York Region council approved a seniors BOTTOM LINE: Even if you’re strategy task force to come years away from becoming a senior up with recommendations citizen, don’t ignore the impact to address the needs of aging this boom will have. citizens and their impact on

Name and shame deadly drivers This letter concerns the tragic accident June 29 claiming the life of one cyclist and seriously injuring another at the southwest corner of Dufferin and Glen Shields in Thornhill. Recently, I had to stop at the lights at the same place going north when I noticed flowers placed at the foot of the utility pole knocked out by the two cars. These drivers must be named and shamed, as there is no earthly reason why such fatal crashes should occur on a bright, sunshiny day. At least the flowers and cards at the spot where the cyclist died show the goodness of people (unknown to the victim).

Hospital needs cardiac catheterization lab We are writing to express our disappointment that the new hospital will not have a Cardiac Catheterization Lab.

Statistics show heart attack is the number 1 killer in North America; we in Vaughan are part of that statistic. I am a heart attack survivor as recently as July 2014. However, my younger brother did not survive his ordeal the same summer. He went to Etobicoke Osler Hospital and had a heart attack while in emergency. Staff tried to revive him many times, however, there was nothing they could do except to transfer him to Brampton Hospital ... he died on the way. What a tragic time for our family. Results may have been different if Etobicoke had a cardiac cath lab. This letter voices our concern of the importance of a cath lab for Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital. Millions are being spent to build this magnificent hospital, only to lack facilities to care for the number 1 killer. Plans have been made to accommodate other services that are non life-threatening, instead of the most time sensitive heart wing. Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital being associated with Sunnybrook Hospital does

SEND A LETTER: Email your letters to boneill@yrmg.com not help with time restrictions when a heart attack is happening. It seems to us that the lives of Vaughan residents are not important to the politicians or administrators who are planning this new hospital. Concerning the April 2015 information meeting, we feel the meeting was rushed and residents were not allowed to express their concerns. It seemed organizers had an agenda and nothing else mattered. We wanted to bring this issue up, however, time was not given to pursue the issue. We believe that the heart cath lab was not considered to be an important issue by all levels of government. We are very disappointed and are prepared to push our agenda forward by starting a petition towards this goal.

Audit of campaign expenses rejected amartinrobbins@yrmg.com

A developer’s request for an audit of a Vaughan city councillor’s campaign finances has been rejected. Three members of the Joint Compliance Audit Committee, on July 9, nixed Lucia Milani’s application for an in-depth examination of Maple/Kleinburg Councillor Marilyn Iafrate’s financial filings for the 2014 municipal election. “I was extremely gratified by the decision,” Iafrate said in an interview this week. “I knew I hadn’t done anything wrong.” Milani, of Rizmi Holdings Ltd., alleged Iafrate may have contravened the Municipal Elections Act by incurring Internet and phone expenses for her campaign and failing to report them. Milani also alleged Iafrate may have used her taxpayer-funded office expense account for Internet services to support her re-election campaign. Milani also raised questions about Iafrate’s failure to include any expenses or donations related to the annual Run for Vaughan event in her election finance filings. Milani states that Iafrate directed members of the development community considering contributing to her campaign to donate instead to certain not-for-profit or charity organizations based in Ward 1 including Run for Vaughan, an event organized by the Ahmadiyya Muslim community to raise funds for the Vaughan hospital. Milani notes that Iafrate, who identified

herself as honorary chair of the event, spoke at the event Sept. 28 at Canada’s Wonderland, about a month before the election. She alleged the Run For Vaughan registration form “advertised Iafrate for endorsement.” “Without an audit, it is impossible to know how many would be (sic) donations/ contributions went to Run for Vaughan … that should have properly been accounted for as contributions to her campaign,” Milani states in her application. “Likewise without an audit, it is impossible to know what expenses relating to the event should have been properly accounted for as contributions to her campaign.”

decision ‘disappointing’ The compliance audit application points to a potential over-contribution from seemingly related companies and the possibility one of the corporations listed as donating to Iafrate’s campaign may not exist, but Milani was not seeking the audit based on either of those issues, the application states. Milani has yet to respond to a request for comment, but in an email her son, Cam, called the committee’s decision “disappointing”. It’s not known, at this time, if Milani will appeal the committee’s decision. “I have no problem, if they want to appeal it. I run a very tight campaign and I show everything,” Iafrate said. “Quite frankly, I was expecting this. … This was no surprise... I’m ready for it, if that’s what they choose to do.”

Cause of house fire under investigation Fire officials were back on the scene Monday investigating the cause of a fire that destroyed two homes in Vaughan Sunday night. At least two dozen firefighters were called out to the dinner-hour blaze on Thornridge Drive west of Yonge Street and south of Centre Street in Thornhill. Flames and smoke could be seen for several kilometres. No one was injured in the fire, which began at a house under construction just before 6:30 p.m., then spread to a neighbouring home.

It knocked out power to about seven dozen homes in the area. York Regional Police sent out a series of tweets during the fire. “Police and Fire on the way for the house on fire... 911 lines are jamming. We do have the call,” one read. “Fire and Police on scene, smoke and flames visible, Thornridge Dr. closed to traffic,” another read. “Neighbouring residences being evacuated, fire not yet under control,” a third read. - Lisa Queen

Police search for car involved in fatal

“They’re not necessarily in trouble, that’s why we want to talk to them,” he said. “We’re appealing for witnesses who might have seen this car or body shops asked to repair it.” Sgt. Schmidt said the motorcycle joined Hwy. 401’s westbound traffic at a “high rate of speed” at Avenue Road at 9:30 p.m. July 8, before “lane splitting” and then smashing into the Sentra and then a black BMW. The Sentra is grey, between a 2007 and 2012 model. Anyone with information should call 1-888310-1122. - Jeremy Grimaldi

The OPP is searching for a car involved in the death of a Vaughan motorcyclist, killed during a highway crash last week. Police held a media conference Thursday in a bid to locate one of the cars the motorcycle slammed into before it crashed into another, killing the 25-year-old rider. Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said the police have debris, including a mirror, of the Nissan Sentra that was damaged in the crash. Police also have dash cam footage from another vehicle, but aren’t releasing it yet.

Jonathan Adams was loved and admired by his students and work colleagues. The local hockey community is mourning the death of the 26-yearold Newmarket man, whose body was found in a wood lot Thursday afternoon. Jonathan, who had worked as an instructor at Vaughan’s Bar Down Hockey Development school since 2013, is being fondly remembered as a “fantastic guy” and a “great friend”. “The last couple of weeks have been a nightmare, just wondering where he was,” Matt Piva, Adams’ boss and close pal, said Friday morning. “You always have the thought of ‘Is he gone?’ in the back of your head. You get the news that this poor guy’s been there for God only knows how long. It’s tough. His parents are unbelievable people; I can only imagine what they’re going through. He’s been a huge part of (the hockey school’s) success. “The kids have an idea now, but a lot of them are younger and really looked up to him. It’s a tough situation trying to explain to a sevenyear-old kid what happened and what he was going through. You don’t want to scare them.” Piva knew Adams for about 10 years and says his friend was instrumental in establishing the school. “Whatever I needed, he was my main guy,” Piva said. “A lot of the parents and students really loved him. It’s a pretty sad situation. Our school’s different than most; we’re a pretty close-knit group. He was more than an employee; he became a very good friend. “Work’s secondary when it comes to this.” Adams’ body was located at about 1:40 p.m. Thursday in a forested area near Dufferin Street and Davis Drive. His death is not considered suspicious, police said in a media release. “We wish to thank the public and the media for their ongoing assistance with messaging to assist in the search,” Duty Insp. Gary Miner said. Adams had been missing since June 28. He reportedly checked himself into a mental health facility only days before going missing. Piva hopes to start up a charity in Adams’ name soon, to help hockey players who are battling mental health issues. “We’ll try to put together a little foundation, a ‘hockey fights depression’ kind of thing,” Piva said. “We’ve had a couple of ideas from the parents. If we can find a way to reach out before it gets to this conclusion, that’s the only thing we really can do. You hear about these depressions all the time. I’ve lost a couple

Jimmy De Zen, son of prominent Woodbridge citizen Vic, dies while on vacation BY JEREMY GRIMALDI

jgrimaldi@yrmg.com

James (Jimmy) De Zen has died after apparently suffering a heart attack in a Las Vegas hotel last week. The 46-year-old died last Thursday while on a vacation with his only sibling, Sergio, and his father, prominent Woodbridge real estate magnate and plastics entrepreneur Vic De Zen. The trio, accompanied by several friends, were in Nevada on their annual trip to the World Series of Poker, which runs until tomorrow. The body remains in the United States while an autopsy is carried out, according to a Zzen Group of Companies employee, who did not want to be named. When asked how Vic was taking the news, the employee said he was “distraught”, adding it’s very hard for the family to grieve his passing while the body remains outside of the country.

More will become apparent about what exactly happened after the body is returned to Canada, the employee said.Vic, an Italian immigrant, turned a small Woodbridge plastics company into a worldwide empire in the 1990s. He also owns a luxury resort and casino in St. Kitts. Jimmy worked for his father at Royal from a young age and as an executive later on, but eventually left. He lived in Schomberg for a time. On an Instagram photo montage, created by Jimmy’s nephew, Colby, people paid tribute. “Words cannot describe how much you will be missed R.I.P Jimmy,” Colby wrote. Andrew Bordin, Jimmy’s first cousin, refused to go into detail, saying even family members don’t have many details, but did convey one message. “He was a guy with a very big heart,” he said.

CHEVROLET SONIC 15 20 S IN W T EN D U ST DBRIDGE FROM ROY FOSS WOO This creative St. Elizabeth Catholic High School team of Jessica Bartella, Natalie Grossi, Samantha Hansel and Monique Lopes won a Pan Am art competition in the Cottage Life category. Their multicolour Muskoka chair featuring a loon is now part of the outdoor furniture being enjoyed at the Athletes’ Village.

Joseph Evola, winner of the Roy Foss Woodbridge SonicGrades program, drove away in a brand new 2015 Chevrolet Sonic at the exciting final draw held at Roy Foss Chevrolet Buick GMC in Woodbridge on July 4. Joseph is a recent graduate of Father Bressani Catholic High School in Woodbridge. The SonicGrades program was developed by Sam Alaimo, president of Roy Foss Woodbridge. It was designed to inspire the leaders of tomorrow, the Grade 12 students, to pursue academic excellence today and forever. The students at the eight participating high schools in their fourth year of high school and who achieved an average of 80% or better in the 2014/2015 school year were eligible to win the Sonic. As a firm believer that graduating students represent the leaders of tomorrow, Sam Alaimo wanted to give students a rewarding opportunity and personal challenge to excel as they prepare for the next stage in their lives. Aspiring and committing to academic excellence is a fundamental success factor. A strong academic background not only prepares students for the road ahead, it opens doors and puts them in the driver’s seat to pursuing their passions. Knowledge is power, confidence and innovation – the key to future success said Mr. Alaimo.

Colourful artwork created by four Vaughan high school students is now on display as a piece of Canadiana at the Pan Am Athletes’ Village. To help beautify the village, Pan Am organizers invited all Ontario high school students to design and paint on three, 7-ft. Muskoka chairs. Each chair was required to have its own theme, such as cottage life, the waterfront or the city skyline, with its own particular colour scheme. On behalf of St. Elizabeth Catholic High School, teacher Fred Galang accepted the creative invitation and assigned his Grade 11 design students to the task of designing and painting chairs as their culminating project.

Five groups submitted a design. The team of Jessica Bartella, Natalie Grossi, Samantha Hansel and Monique Lopes won in the ‘cottage life’ category. Using aboriginal art as a point of inspiration, the group decided to include a powerful image of the loon in its idyllic northern environment. “Norval Morrisseau was an inspiration,” Bartella explained. Lopes added: “The number of colours he could put in and how well they worked together was a good frame of reference.” When the Pan Am Games conclude, the chairs will be donated to the winning schools as a reminder of the spirit of

competition that embodies the Pan Am and Parapan Am Games. “It’s special to participate in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Grossi said. “It is an absolute honour to have been one of the winners of the 2015 Pan Am / Parapan Am Games chair design contest,” Hansel added. “We couldn’t be more grateful for this extraordinary opportunity to share our Canadian pride and talent with the world.” More images and creations of the students can be found by going to the York Catholic District School Board website, ycdsb.ca and searching for PanAmChairs. — Simone Joseph

Drone to survey crash scenes, search for missing persons, police say tlatchford@yrmg.com

i

Visit yorkregion.com for a video demonstration of the UAV.

YRP will primarily use the drone when investigating serious or fatal vehicle collisions, searching for missing persons, security sweeps of outdoor venues and to assess a train derailment or hazardous waste incident before sending responders in, according to YRP spokesperson Andy Pattenden. “Investigating one fatal collision can close a road for eight to 10 hours,” he said, explaining it takes a long time to manually map out an accident scene. “This will cut that time in half.”

The use of an unmanned aerial vehicle will cut road closure durations in half when investigating serious or fatal collisions, York Regional Police says. YRP is the second municipal police force in the province to add a drone —a flying apparatus with cameras attached — to its toolbox. Currently, Halton Regional Police, Ontario Provincial Police and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police are using drone technology.

ShiningLightMontessori.com At a demonstration just off Don Hillock Drive in Aurora, the drone, which is slightly larger than a basketball, launched, took pictures and landed with ease and made no more noise than a slight buzzing. Two licensed officers, one observing the drone and the other using a tablet and stylus pen to control the flight path, operated the apparatus that’s worth $125,000, including the cameras. It weighs 2.4 kilograms, is capable of vertical take offs and landings and can capture high-resolution images during the day or night. “The UAV is a welcome addition to our investigative toolbox,” police Chief Eric Jollife said.

The basics of camping for first-time campers Camping is a popular activity, but many curious would-be campers do not know where to get started. It can be tempting to purchase all of the gear needed and trek out to give it a try. But if camping is not all you expected it to be, you have just made a costly investment in a lot of equipment you are unlikely to use again. Instead of jumping right in, first try to learn as much about camping as possible. Do your homework, learning about various camping styles and which ones you prefer. Does the idea of renting a recreational vehicle sound more inviting than sleeping in a tent? Would you prefer a campground with showers, toilets and other amenities or is roughing it in the great outdoors more appealing? Once prospective campers are able to find their camping path, they can explore all of the possibilities and give it a trial run.

Test the waters There’s bound to be a camping en-

thusiast in your midst. Find a friend or family member who enjoys camping and find out if you can join him or her on his or her next trip. Take advantage of this person’s supplies (you may need to purchase nominal equipment, such as a backpack and sleeping bag) and expertise. Such trips can provide some firsthand experience, and friends can offer advice on the keys to successful camping. It is generally easier to learn the ropes from someone who has experience choosing campsites and pitching tents, and this person also can offer suggestions about gear.

How rugged are you? The definition of camping varies from camper to camper. For some, camping must include sleeping on a bedroll strewn out under the stars, while others may appreciate a few more luxuries on their camping excursions, like the running water or equipment offered at

a campsite or park. Still, others do not want to leave the perks of home at home, preferring the comfortable living of a recreational vehicle. Nothing can end a camping excursion more quickly than discomfort and not enjoying the experience. It is better to figure out in advance just how rough you want things to be.

Rent before buying Rent camping equipment to test out the gear you have in mind. This will give you an idea of everything from the sizes of tents to the type of cookware you may need. Renting is a less expensive approach for those who plan to camp sparingly. If your first trip inspires a genuine love of camping, then you can purchase equipment. You can always begin with the basics and then expand as you find new gear that will enhance your camping experiences, asking camping enthusiasts and experts for

recommendations on everything from gear to campsites and more.

Pointers for beginners When looking for a campsite, find a level ground that is high up. You do not want to be rolling down a slope or find that the tide has come in. Choose a spot with a nearby water supply. You will need it for cooking and cleaning up. Water is heavy to carry, so you do not want to have to transport it too far. Never light a fire inside your tent. To be safe, keep the fire for cooking and warmth away from sleeping quarters. Carbon monoxide can build up quickly, even inside a ventilated tent. Never leave a campfire burning unattended. A campsite with a mix of sun and shade will help you feel most comfortable. Spending several hours in the blazing sun can compromise your energy levels and put you at risk for dehydration. It is a good idea to have a way to get out

of the hot sun. Overhanging tree limbs also may buffer the tent from rain. Food storage is another factor to consider when camping. A campsite can attract anything from small rodents to larger predators. Food should always be stored in insulated coolers that are not easily opened. Keep the food away from the tent so that animals will not rummage through sleeping quarters for snacks. Store garbage off the ground and out of reach of many animals. Dispose of garbage properly, ideally in covered trash receptacles. Animals accustomed to campsite food may be more daring than you would otherwise expect, so do not feed wildlife and keep food and trash out of reach. Camping is a popular pastime and an activity tailor-made for warmer weather. But beginners should learn the ropes and test their equipment before investing too much time and money.

Free family fest set for Saturday

In the special education field, ‘hand over hand’ typically means showing a student how to complete an activity by putting the teacher’s hand on top of the student’s hand to model the activity. The organization Hand Over Hand wanted to change this term to suit its mission. Instead, imagine a team of people in a circle, each placing his or her hand over each person’s before a game to do a cheer. “What our name means to us, is that peers can work together and support each other as a team to fulfill similar goals in an equitable way,” says the group’s website. Hand Over Hand hosts its second annual Hand Over Hand Music Festival this Saturday, July 18 in Thornhill. The festival was created to provide a safe and accessible environment for people of all abilities to enjoy music, food and other activities. Hundreds of people, including youth and young adults with disabilities will attend this event. To make the festival accessible to people of all abilities, the event will have: sign language communication for all performances; all flat areas with no stairs or architectural barriers; a visual schedule; reduced volume; no bright, flashing lights for people with sensory sensitivities; a high number of volunteers to make sure all guests are accommodated; emcees announcing upcoming performers and raffle draws and seating in front of the performance areas. There will be performances by local musicians, free outdoor adaptive yoga and drumming sessions, and booths featuring local vendors and community organizations that support individuals with disabilities. It is a family friendly event and admission is free. - Simone Joseph

A second fundraiser in support of The Hospital for Sick Children’s cardiac critical care unit in honour of a young girl who received treatment at the downtown site will be held Friday, July 24 in Vaughan. Liv It Up Home Decor will be held at Presidente Banquet Hall, 1133 Creditstone Rd., from 5 to 10 p.m. in memory of Alivia Nina Pileggi. The little girl underwent open heart surgery at two weeks old for her condition of pulmonary atresia with intact septum, which obstructed the outflow of blood from the

heart to the lungs due to a completely closed valve. Though the surgery was successful, blood clots later formed all over her body, including her kidney and liver. Alivia died at 18 days old on July 26, 2011. The fundraiser will feature various vendors and prizes, with a goal of raising $25,000 in order to purchase an honourary plaque in Alivia’s name for the donor wall of the downtown hospital. Admission costs $2. For information, visit www.facebook.com/ livituphomedecor

New program provides emergency mortgage loans to homeowners On November 1, 2013, Expert Mortgage launched the “85Alive”program in Ontario. The concept was simple: as long as you had a pulse, Expert Mortgage would provide you with a home equity loan, up to 85 percent of the value of your property. No job required. Bad credit, OK. The reason why Expert Mortgage could offer a “no questions asked” lending program, while the major banks could not, is that they represent over 200 private lenders who lend strictly on property value. These subprime lenders specialize in mortgage clients who have had some bad luck, and need a helping hand until they get back on their feet. The program has been so successful that Expert Mortgage can barely keep up with the volume of calls. To help fund this unexpectedly large number of borrowers, it has partnered up with dozens more private lenders.

Licensed Mortgage Agent Puneet Garg, Expert Mortgage’s “85-Alive” representative for the GTA Region, says, “We’re seeing mostly homeowners behind on mortgage and property taxes. The banks are refusing to restructure their loans. Many of these people have lost jobs due to the bad economy... or they’re self-employed. Unless you are a perfect applicant, the bank doesn’t want to talk to you.” But not everyone condones Expert Mortgage’s easy lending criteria. A local real estate agent with 25 years of experience, who has asked to remain anonymous, says, “When this market turns down, it’s going to get ugly! It’s utter financial suicide for Expert Mortgage to be giving money away so easily to clients without the ability to make payments. I’d be surprised if they’re still in business five years from now.” Nonetheless, homeowners

like Anita P. don’t see a problem with the program. When questioned on how she plans on making payments on her mortgage when she has no income, Anita responds, “We were four months behind on our mortgage and they saved our house. My husband has been unemployed for nine months. He won’t be unemployed forever. We used the 85-Alive loan to pay off all our debt. We also had $25,000 left over that we put in the bank for emergencies. And to make life easy, they worked it out so we have no mortgage payments for 12 months.” For more details on the ”85-Alive” program, contact Puneet Garg, Mortgage Agent 647-852-4274. www.TalkToPuneet.ca

uch of the wisdom I have acquired has come from my willingness and ability to sift through the less desirable parts of my past, to analyze what I chose, and why, so that I could find a nugget of truth that would propel me forward with greater conviction and understanding. Taking this time to reflect has served me well over the years and has become a true asset. It has also provided me the opportunity to help countless others who, too, have felt stuck or lost from moments in their checkered past. So last month, when faced with a series of events that didn’t sit right with me, I went to the well once again to find the answers to some questions in my head that were troubling me. And I got lost. It seemed that the more I searched for that nugget of truth about what I felt had gone wrong in the past, the worse things got. Rather than illuminating the wisdom I was so used to seeing, it reinforced that stuck feeling inside and predestined me to a future of experiencing much of the same. When faced with turmoil and indecision, I think all of us tend to lean on our greatest gift, the asset that makes us special and unique. Yet mine had seemingly turned on me and it wasn’t until I was reminded of a quote from Bengali philosopher Rabindranath Tagore, that I was able to turn my ship around. He said: “A mind all logic is like a knife all blade. It makes the hand bleed that uses it.” I could now see that my gift of introspection had slowly turned into a form of analysis paralysis, or as a friend of mine used to say, “stinking thinking”. All I had been focusing on was the problem and that is what life continued to provide

Timothy Barlow It’s All Good for me as a result, more problems. It was time to move to a solution, a choice, a choice made without all of the knowledge I thought I needed to make it. It was time to listen to my heart as well, and not just my head. So I made it and then a funny thing happened. Much of the missing information that had previously eluded me has now become quite clear. The wisdom I had been seeking to move forward in my life was on the other side of simply moving forward. Each of us will face dilemmas in our lives that we can’t always make sense of, but it helps to remember that this life, and this universe, will provide the answers we seek, some in the form of introspection of where we’ve been and some in form of things yet to come. It’s up to us to continue to move forward anyway, trusting in our hearts that those answers will be there for us, even when we can’t yet see them. I think they call it faith. interested and sell other works at their annual Bake and Craft Sale in late October. effort. Those in the market for an agent to help navigate the home buying process should consider the following tips. FIND A BUYER’S AGENT. Real estate agents are often affiliated with sellers instead of buyer’s. This means their primary goal is to help the seller and not the buyer. When shopping around for a real estate agent, ask companies about their buyer’s agents. Buyers should always have someone with their interests in mind, and not the interests of the sellers. FIND SOMEONE WITH A TRACK RECORD. Real estate can be an exciting and financially rewarding industry in which to work. As a result, lots of people want to be real estate agents, even though few succeed and last a long time. When interviewing real estate agents, inquire about their history in the business. A more experienced agent will make things far less stressful and easier, and a long career indicates they are good at what they do. A real estate agent with a long history in the business will likely be a full-time agent as well. Prospective buyers should look for a full-time agent, which is not as common as some buyers might think. Many agents work part-time, and buyers could receive less attention as a result.

How to Find the

RIGHT REAL ESTATE AGENT

DON’T PLACE TOO MUCH EMPHASIS ON AGENCY SIZE. Real estate agencies come in all shapes and sizes. When it comes to ability, the size of the agency should not factor in. A smaller independent agency can be just as qualified and reliable as one of the major franchise agencies. Buyers who find someone they trust should go with that person, regardless of how big or small their agency is.

One way to make the process a lot less anxiety-ridden is to work with a real estate agent you can trust. Those who have previously purchased a home might already have a strong relationship with a real estate agent. But for those moving out of their current location or buying for the first time, finding the right real estate agent requires some

resources. Buyers looking in “Town X” who have friends or family already living there should consult those friends or family and ask for any agent referrals. Those relocating because of work should ask their company to refer an agent. Chances are companies have relocated employees in the past and might have a strong relationship with an agency in town.

Buying a home is often a difficult thing to do. The stress of making such a big financial commitment is a struggle for many home buyers, whether they have purchased a home GET A REFERRAL. in the past or are doing so for the first time. Friends and family members who have been through the buying process before might be great

Heartbreaking struggle to care for aging spouses, parents From page 1.

from their grown sons, although she admits she may require more professional assistance as Laszlo rapidly deteriorates. She looks surprised when asked why she does it. “You’re doing it for love. I don’t know any other reason,” she said. Perlaky was nominated for a Heroes in the Home award by CCAC rapid response nurse Katrina Corpus-Roque. “I meet caregivers daily in my line of work and I have never met such an outstanding caregiver. Mrs. Perlaky has dedicated her life to her husband, going to great lengths to provide her husband the best care possible and keep him healthy,” she said in her nomination earlier this year. “I believe that it is the likes of Mrs. Perlaky that would prevent patients with manageable chronic conditions like heart failure from going back to hospital. And for this, I think the community and I are thankful for her excellent care.” Laszlo was diagnosed with lung cancer last year, but responded well to four doses of radiation. In January, he suffered a heart attack and was in hospital for five days. Just days after he returned home, he was re-admitted to hospital with pneumonia. After being discharged a second time, a

nurse came to the home to check his lungs. Once Laszlo’s lungs were clear, Perlaky took over the nursing duties. She has a blood pressure monitor and a unit to check her husband’s blood oxygen level at home and she keeps meticulous records of his medical condition. By April, Laszlo had congestive heart failure and a rapid response nurse and a dietician visited. A physiotherapist has also been treating him. But there is not much more that can be done for Laszlo any more. Although Perlaky insists she is physically strong, she lost her left breast to cancer five years ago. She also suffers from heart problems and diabetes. It’s her “nerves” that bother her most as she deals with the emotional toll of watching her husband die. She rarely leaves the house any more. But listening to music, doing artwork and gardening help. Perlaky said she doesn’t resent dedicating all her time to her husband’s care. “Why would I? He doesn’t want more than what he really needs. Taking care of him, I don’t think about it, I just do it. That’s my job right now. Much harder to take care of myself. Obviously, I am somewhat second, but I know I have to take care of myself, so I can take care of him,” she said. “I do it happily. All of my sadness basically is coming from when I’m not with him.”

Emma Perlaky, caregiver for Laszlo Perlaky, shares a tender moment with her husband of 45 years in their Thornhill home. She was nominated by a nurse for a Heroes in the Home Award, and says she nurses her husband out of love. While many would commend Perlaky for the loving care she gives her husband, another York family has struggled tremendously finding care for a much-loved elderly father, who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia and also suffers from the debilitating effects of gout. “This side of the story needs to be told, too,” said Michelle, who did not want her full name published. When her father was admitted to hospital in February with gout, a complex form of arthritis, the family learned that Michelle’s father had legally granted power of attorney to Michelle rather than to her mother, with whom he has had a difficult marriage for almost 60 years. While Michelle’s brothers accepted the situation when they realized she wasn’t looking to take advantage of their father, her mother and sister were very upset. Michelle has also argued with her mother and sister because she insists her ailing and demanding father, who has taken to physi-

cally lashing out at caregivers, needs to be admitted to a long-term care facility, while they want him at home. However, they may be changing their minds after attempts at weekend visits home have not gone well. Since February, Michelle has struggled to cope overseeing her father’s finances and health care amid long-standing troubling family dynamics. “The personal issues make the situation so much harder,” she said. “Alzheimer’s and dementia is a horrible disease for everybody. There are good days and bad days. There are good days (when her father is more lucid) and you have somebody in hospital and all they say is they want to go home and they’re crying and you know in your heart that you can’t let that person go because of safety reasons.” Her father falls repeatedly, is sometimes incontinent and insists he is capable of See next page.

driving even though he has lost his driver’s licence. Navigating the system has been difficult for Michelle, who said she adores her father but has often found herself frustrated and overwhelmed. Although professionals have been kind, she was suddenly plunged into a world filled with terms and policies with which she is unfamiliar. Michelle also soon came to realize the under-funded system has a shortage of available provincial nursing home beds. Although the government is focused on an aging-at-home strategy, home care supports are lacking. For example, clients can only rely on a limited number of hours provided by a personal care worker or limited financial help with medical equipment, she said. The challenges will only increase with the aging population, Michelle said. “This is going to be an epidemic, in my mind,” she said. Michelle has felt intense pressure from the hospital to take her father home or find a facility for him to free up his hospital bed. She was also repeatedly asked by hospital staff and a CCAC caseworker assigned to her father what plan the family had agreed on to address his long-term care needs. Michelle had to admit her family had never talked about it, although it’s a discussion she

plans to have with her own family about her future care. Because no bed in a provincial long-term care facility was available, Michelle scrambled to find her father a bed in a private seniors’ home. Although the home said it was able to care for seniors with some special needs, Michelle was soon told her father, who was assigned a second CCAC worker while in the home, could not be accommodated due to his behavioural problems. His bill for 17 days in the facility came to $7,500. Although Michelle was again told her father should be cared for at home, she insisted he be taken back to hospital, where he was assigned a third CCAC case worker. Michelle is now trying to get her father placed in a provincial long-term care home, where his Canada Pension Plan and Old Age Security benefits will cover the expenses of a bed in a ward room. The journey of getting her father care has left Michelle drained. “For myself, the guilt is tremendous. Myself, I’m angry because I feel I have done a lot of this on my own,” she said. “The system is there for you, but you have to figure it out and you have to listen and you have to read. There is lots of help but it can be overwhelming.”

I

enjoyed a needed vacation last week and basked in perfect summery weather, relaxing at the beach over a good 1,000page novel at my favourite park in Ontario, or maybe Canada — Sandbanks. But I couldn’t help thinking that my week had revolved around four-legged animals, specifically dogs. I had planned a short vacation retreat at a resort in historic Prince Edward County — or “The County” as locals call it. For decades, my father and our extended family enjoyed a family farm in Picton and so for both my adult daughter and myself, summer isn’t summer without a stay in The County and beach time at Sandbanks. Since the farm was sold after my father’s death, we now are among the hoards of tourists who flock to resorts, cabins, trailer parks and campgrounds in the area. After weeks of negotiations with my daughter, involving the work schedule of her boyfriend (guess he’s officially her “partner” as they are now living together) and, most importantly, the care of their two dogs, the dates were set and the resort room booked. As dogs aren’t allowed at the resort, part of the vacation deal involved our daughter’s dog, Bruno, and the partner’s dog, Alaska, staying at a “Pet Hotel” — aka our Richmond Hill home. My husband and son had mixed feelings about their

Marney Beck sudden dog-care duties. Bruno was part of our family home for almost two years when our daughter lived at home and worked in Aurora; they were a package deal. But when she worked or visited every weekend with her boyfriend, Bruno became the walking, feeding, playtime responsibility of the rest of our family. So despite some protests, I knew both my husband and son were pleased to dig out the dog toys and welcome Bruno back home for a brief stay. Alaska, a girl dog, was an unknown houseguest. She and Bruno have become doggy pals now that their human parents live together, but she’d never stayed overnight in our home. At any rate, with tales wagging and then with brief howls of protest when my daughter and her partner left to head to Sandbanks, they settled in to our home. There were more howls of protest when I headed out the door too, loaded down with coolers and bags. At any rate, I drove to The County, met my daughter and her partner at the beach

for a picnic lunch, and was then informed that they had to return to the GTA that very day for a very good reason. “I have a job interview!” she announced. After many months of unemployment and job searching, this was welcome news — as any parent of a young person this day and age would agree. And, while not what I had envisaged after paying for four years of university education, it was an assistant manager job at a pet store — perfect for the passionate pet owner and animal lover that she is. The next day, while lounging in the sand watching families cavort in gentle waves, I received a happy text: “I got the job!” Upon my return home, I learned that my husband and son had survived their dog-sitting duties quite well. The only damage done was to a couple of plants in the back garden, trampled by an excited Alaska trying to capture one of many squirrels. When my good friend in Newmarket called that same week to tell me her new York Region Pet Services business was doing well, describing with humour the Rottweilers, cats and other pets she was caring for, I decided that my week really was going to the dogs, but in a good way.

Top-ranked Ontario jumper ready to take on rest of Canada BY MICHAEL HAYAKAWA

mhayakawa@yrmg.com

Joshua McCarroll is ready, willing and able. What has the 14-year-old Maple resident excited is his invitation to be on the Team Ontario track and field contingent that will compete at the Royal Canadian Legion National Championship in Sainte-Thérèse/ Blainville, Que. from Aug. 7 to 9. Recently completing his Grade 9 year at Maple High School, McCarroll earned the right to be on the team by capturing the long jump, triple jump and high jump events during the recent Royal Canadian Legion Provincial Championships in London.

For McCarroll, who was also the gold medallist in the midget boys high jump event and bronze in the triple jump at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations championships at the University of Toronto this year, his appearance on the Team Ontario roster at this upcoming event will mark his debut. “It feels amazing to know that I was chosen because I am one of the best in Ontario,” he said. “I am really excited to compete and see how my talent stacks up against the rest of Canada.” As for what events McCarroll will compete in at the nationals, he said for the time being he hasn’t received all of the informa-

tion regarding the upcoming competition. “The coaches for Team Ontario decide which events everyone will compete in based on their abilities,” he said. “But I am ready to compete in any event.” Citing his personal best efforts in the long jump is 6.29 metres, 13.02m in the triple jump and 1.87m in the long jump, McCarroll is ranked first in his age group by Athletics Ontario in the triple and high jump during the outdoor season. He’s also ranked first by Athletics Ontario in his age group in the triple jump and long jump during the indoor season. In explaining his rapid ascent up the competitive ladder, McCarroll was quick to credit several factors. Among them, has been his time in competing outside of school with the Flying Angels, a track and field club he’s been associated with since Grade 7, under the guidance of their jumps coach Paul Johnson. “Without the support of my coaches with the Flying Angels I wouldn’t have been as good as I am today,” he said. “I feel that I’m success because I work hard. Training, eating healthy and dedication all account for my success.” As for the future, McCarroll is already looking at the big picture where he hopes to represent Canada on the international stage. “I am working towards representing Canada on the world stage and hope to bring home an Olympic gold medal one day. I am hoping to make it to the 2020 Olympics,” he said.

Two York Region youngsters hope to put their best foot forward in representing Canada at the upcoming Danone Nations Cup International finals to be played in Morrocco in October. Woodbridge resident Julian Terisigni and Richmond Hill resident Benjamin Kaplan were members of the Eastern Canada squad that will represent Canada at the upcoming international competition. The pair played an instrumental role in helping the Eastern Canada under-12 squad defeat their Western Canadian counterparts 4-0 in the 15th Danone Nations Cup Canadian national final in Montreal at the end of June to earn the right to represent Canada. A midfielder, Kaplan and Tersigni, who plays fullback, are members of the Woodbridge Soccer Club’s under-12 boys squad.

Shooters win second straight The York Region Shooters won their second straight game with a 3-2 verdict over Toronto Atomic FC in Canadian Soccer League First Division action at St. Joan of Arc Catholic High School in Maple, Sunday. The Shooters took a 1-0 lead just 24 minutes in on a goal by Richard West. Just nine minutes later, the defending league champions padded their lead on a goal by Aleksander Stojanovski. But Toronto Atomic cut their deficit just before the half on a goal by Michael Tischer. Five minutes into the second half, Ihor Melnyk beat Shooters goalkeeper Adrian

Ibanez to tie the game 2-2. The Shooters regained the upper hand on West’s second marker of the game at 75 minutes to round out the scoring. Occupying 10th place in the standings, the victory by the Shooters improved their record to 3-5-0-9. The Shooters are scheduled to host ninthplace Brampton City United, 3-4-2-11, at St. Joan of Arc on Sunday at 6:30 p.m.

Thornhill player out early at Pan Ams Peter Polansky’s time at the 2015 Pan American Games was short-lived. The 27-year-old Thornhill resident, who competed for Canada in the men’s singles tennis competition, was eliminated in second round action by Roberto E. Cid of the Dominican Republic 2-0 at the Canadian Tennis Centre Saturday. Dropping the first set 6-2 in a match that lasted just 37 minutes, Polansky took the 21-year-old Cid to the limit in the second set before falling 7-5 in a match that lasted 63 minutes. This was Polansky’s first tournament in ninth months. He’s been recovering from wrist surgery after an injury last year. — Michael Hayakawa

Hilton Wilson left ‘huge mark’ on Kleinburg BY Adam Martin-Robbins

amartinrobbins@yrmg.com

H

ilton Wilson was well known as a highly regarded educator who was passionate about his Kleinburg community, sports and gardening. Those who knew him best will also tell you that he marched to the beat of his own drummer. “I would do things a certain way, but Hilton would never, ever do it that way. He’d have a way of his own,” his wife, Gail Wilson, said. Born in 1941, Hilton Wilson grew up Goderich, the second youngest of six children. His mother worked as a teacher, while his father was a general labourer. “They didn’t have a lot of money, so he grew up doing things for himself,” Gail said. After high school, Wilson headed to teachers’ college in Hamilton, eventually landing a job teaching elementary school in Etobicoke. Wilson spent his summer vacations working toward a bachelor’s degree, with a double major in Math and English, at the University of Western Ontario in London. That’s where, in 1964, he met Gail, also working toward a degree. The couple married in 1965 and he took the next year off from teaching to finish his degree. A passionate educator, Wilson eventually earned a masters in education from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, at University of Toronto. He also helped write a reading

series for young children and dedicated a lot of time to research on childhood development, Gail said. In 1969, the couple moved to Kleinburg, where they started a family. Wilson was the proud father of two boys, Jeff and Brent. It was through coaching his sons’ T-ball teams that Wilson first became involved in the community. From there, he joined the legion of volunteers who help out with the annual Binder Twine Festival, starting out in the booth selling the infamous Kleinburgers, french fries and onion rings. He quickly became a key member of the organizing committee, on which he served for 20 years including two as chairperson. “He played a huge role on the Friday night setting up. During the day, he was the go-to person on the Saturday (and) on Sunday cleanup, he was always there,” said longtime friend Bob Klein. “He was just the go-to guy.” Wilson was also a founding member of the Kleinburg Old Boys, a local volunteer group that established and runs a small museum at Klein House dedicated to preserving the village’s history. “He just liked to know what was going on (in the community) and he didn’t like when things weren’t handled properly so he liked to be in there, getting it done,” Gail said. “He was a get-itdone person.” Though he had no formal computer training, many people knew Wilson as the man to call if your machine was acting up.

Wearing a Kleinburg Binder Twine Festival button, Hilton Wilson could always be found setting up the community festival, cleaning up or generally getting things done. Whether it was gardening, sports, a community event or his family, he was a ‘go-to’ and ‘get it done’ guy.

Hilton Wilson passed away in March at age 73 after making a ‘huge mark’ on Kleinburg. “If anyone had a computer problem and they’d call Hilton and he’d go and, usually, could solve it,” Gail said. “He loved solving problems.” He was never one who sought the limelight. “His friend Ron (Pearson) said recently that Hilton did so many things for Binder Twine that they didn’t realize because he just did those things,” Gail recalled. “He never really wanted to stand out. He just quietly did things.” Along with his passion for Kleinburg, Wilson loved sports – especially baseball, basketball and golf. He had Blue Jays season tickets for many years. And after retiring in 1997 as principal at Bloorlea Middle School, Wilson took up his golf clubs with gusto.

respected and an inspiration to her peers, Mrs. McCluskey was a tireless volunteer, quick to deflect the praise heaped on her.”

He also took charge of organizing regular golf games for the Kleinburg Old Boys, Klein said. Wilson was fond of gardening, too, tending his massive vegetable garden. His tomato and wave petunia plants were sold at the Kleinburg Old Boys annual fundraising plant sale in May. Wilson was also a devoted grandfather to his four granddaughters – Madison, Avery, Sofie and Ellie. Last summer, Wilson was diagnosed with leukemia, but it went

into remission and he was released from hospital, Gail said. A short time later, he developed a rare form of blood cancer called hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH). Wilson died at Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto March 25 at age 73. “If you were a friend of Hilton’s, you were a friend for life. He was that type of guy, ” Klein said. “I still have a hard time believing he’s gone. He left a huge mark on Kleinburg.”
