Wanted for robberies in Vaughan, Markham and Richmond Hill By Jeremy Grimaldi

For 16 robberies in a row, the vaulter bandit had the same technique for robbing banks, landing him tens of thousands or more in cold hard Canadian currency. But then, he switched things up and promptly got himself caught. York Regional Police announced the arrival of Jeffrey Shuman, 53, on Canadian soil Tuesday. See page 15

The city has spent approximately $18 million developing and implementing its official plan and that amount is expected to climb as dozens of appeals by landowners have yet to be settled. That revelation has at least one councillor seeing red. “This is like the city hall (cost

overrun) fiasco all over again. You give one number out to the public and then surprise, surprise now it’s multi-millions more,” said Maple/ Kleinburg Councillor Marilyn Iafrate, noting that she expected the number to be closer to $7 million or $8 million. “I felt betrayed when I read it. … I was not expecting this nor was there any indication that’s how far

out of whack this had gone, and we still don’t have a fully adopted official plan.” Iafrate was reacting to a report that shows between 2007 and 2015 the city spent about $18 million for a range of costs related to Vaughan Official Plan 2010, which guides where and, in some cases, when different types of development — industrial, commercial

s Tom Johnson gathered together his belongings at Newmarket’s Inn From the Cold before facing another day wandering the streets, he talked about the sexual abuse he suffered as a child that has left him emotionally broken and led to his homelessness. “I have gone through, physically, mentally, pure living hell and to cope, when nobody’s around, I crack open a bottle of wine and I’ll sit somewhere and I’ll drink it,” he said. “I don’t have a drinking problem, but when you get down, you sit and you start thinking, you want to get a bottle of wine just to ease the pain.” Johnson, not his real name, said he was sexually abused by a family member beginning from about the age of 12. Johnson, who has a disability, said his already troubled life took a turn for the worse when his mother died about seven years ago and he found himself homeless. The 49-year-old has spent the last several years in a cycle of homelessness or near-homelessness, renting apartments or rooms for short periods, couch surfing, staying in homeless shelters or pitching a tent. “I’ve been homeless now for quite some time. I don’t even remember when there has ever been stability in my life,” he said. He receives a government disability cheque of about $1,200 a month, which he has spent on rent for accommodation that never turns out to be long-term, and on living expenses, such as food and clothing. He is now saving much of his monthly benefit to try to secure more permanent housing and

bring stability into his life. Johnson sits at a table at the homeless shelter with two young men who say circumstances in their lives, including lack of education, dismal job prospects, financial hardship and family strife, left them homeless, too. “For an outsider looking in, it’s very difficult. A lot of people on the outside see it as hard and sad. For me, it’s just life,” said the 20-year-old man, who has been homeless off and on since the age of 16. He is hoping to get his life back on track if he can save enough money to get into a college program.

‘‘

A lot of bad things have to happen to you to be homeless. There are many reasons why people end up homeless, according to officials with York Region shelters, who say their facilities have been busy this winter, despite the mild weather. “Homelessness is very complicated. A lot of bad things have to happen to you in your life to become homeless,” said Inn From the Cold executive director Tom Vegh, adding economic , mental health and/or substance abuse problems are generally at the core of people’s challenges. For five months during the winter, Inn From the Cold offers guests a mat on the floor, nutritious food and others services, such as laundry, between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m. seven days a week. The shelter has seen its numbers climb this year. “Last year, which was a particularly severe winter, a brutal winter, last year (between midNovember and the end of January), we had 1,049 shelter stays. That represented 134 unique guests — some people stayed here multiple times — and that’s a huge number of homeless in the area,” Vegh said. “This year, with the very, very

mild winter, we actually have seen a slight increase for the same period. There has been an increase of 20 stays, so 1,069, which surprised us. We thought that number would go way down, and that represented about 160 unique individuals.” As the region’s population increases, homelessness is growing, Vegh said. Because the homeless are among the most vulnerable members of society, issues such as economic and employment forces and lack of affordable housing hit them first and hardest, he added. Inn From the Cold and other agencies are hoping to establish a social services hub to address issues such as homelessness, Vegh said. Data gathered from the United Way of Toronto and York Region’s first-ever count of the homeless over a 24-hour period last month, which is expected to be released this spring, will help agencies better plan programs and services, he said. “We don’t think we will eliminate homelessness — we’re not naïve to think that — but we can certainly bring the numbers way down and, really, our goal should be to prevent homelessness,” Vegh said. While the Richmond Hill Food Bank doesn’t serve many clients who are homeless, it is seeing an increase in demand this year, manager Brenda Ewart said. “We are seeing our numbers, even since January, have started to increase because we do have some Syrian refugees come in and they do have large families. I think we’re going to see an increase over the next little bit with that,” she said. Families struggling to make ends meet after paying high child care costs are also turning to the food bank, Ewart said. The food bank served about 15,000 clients last year, perhaps slightly higher than in 2014, but she expects to see that number climb this year. Blue Door Shelters, which

operates Leeder Place family shelter, Porter Place men’s shelter and a youth shelter, had people staying at its facilities 435 more nights during the last quarter of 2015 than it did during the same time in 2014. People are staying for longer periods, including larger families who can’t find affordable housing and youths who were not even able to spend time with their families over the holidays because their families were experiencing unemployment, executive director Radha Bhardwaj said. While Blue Doors hasn’t done any research to delve into the reasons behind the trend, she called the increase in demand upsetting. “It is troubling. It’s hard, especially when you see youth who are not actually going home, even over the holidays because it is a time when families get together and they celebrate each other and even if there are difficulties and challenges, people look past that or overcome that even for a short time,” Bhardwaj said. “It’s also really hard to see a lot of little children at the family shelter. In November, we had upwards of 20 children at Leeder Place. It’s hard that so many young people are homeless and are having such a hard start in life.” While Bhardwaj said she is proud Blue Door is there to meet the needs of people needing shelter, she said it’s disturbing the facilities are necessary in relatively affluent York Region, where homelessness is often hidden. “I think homelessness is a problem in York Region. I think homelessness has been a problem for many years,” she said. “I think it’s been very invisible in York Region because we don’t have the spaces for people to be openly homeless.” It is time to come up with real solutions for homelessness in the region, Bhardwaj said. “There isn’t a lot of light shone on it and sometimes it’s easy for all of us to get really comfortable and think it isn’t an issue in our region and, in fact, it is,” she said. Oscar puts Spotlight on good journalism

A

s luck would have it, last week I finally saw the movie Spotlight. My timing was perfect, as a few days later, I was pleased to see it win the Academy Awards’ top prize, the Oscar for movie of the year. But I was cheering for more than just the entertainment value of enjoying a good plot and strong character acting. Spotlight is a validation of investigative journalism and the key role media still plays in our modern communities and, indeed, the world. For those who haven’t seen it yet — it’s the true story of a team of investigative journalists at The Boston Globe who dug up the awful truth about sexual abuse by priests of boys and girls on an unbelievable scale — and the frightening lengths to which some in the highest reaches of the Catholic Church went to keep the abuse secret. I’m not spoiling the movie ending, as the facts have already been well publicized. The shame wasn’t confined to 113 priests in the Boston area, but spread its tentacles across the United States, in Canada, Australia and other countries. While my best friend in the darkened theatre no doubt reacted personally to the movie as a devoted Catholic, I reacted to it viscerally as a journalist. Yes, in these days when daily newspapers are closing, an Ontario TV station lays off half its staff just before Christmas, and headlines in all media trumpet that “print is dead” — I find it heartening that the Hollywood industry and moviegoers themselves, found Spotlight to be an important, watershed movie. One review for Spotlight stated that it deserved to be revered in the same league as Citizen Kane and All The President’s Men — reminding the world that dogged determination of reporters who are thwarted at every turn in efforts to uncover the truth should be celebrated for the causes they bring to light and the light they shine on dark secrets.

vaughan CITIZE

Marney Beck And I’m proud to remind readers that journalists at your local community papers do the same. Of course, we don’t have a separate investigative journalism “team” as the Boston Globe enjoyed, and we have no reporters at York Region Media named Woodward or Bernstein, but your community newspaper still fulfils a vital role in seeking the truth and trying to find out what readers need to know. On your behalf, a reporter attends town or city council meetings to find out what decisions politicians you elected have taken, and report on actions you, the taxpayers, sometimes disagree with. While our newsrooms don’t win Oscars, we do win our share of journalism awards. Just this month we learned that regional reporter Lisa Queen is a finalist for a provincial award for her three-part series Seniors and Boomers — outlining the contributions they make to society, the services they need to live out their retirement and the caregivers who provide support. That series is one of three considered for Best Feature News series through the Ontario Community News Association. Another reporter, Kim Zarzour, wrote a series of articles on Lyme disease and dangers that lurk in tiny infected ticks in our forests and the havoc they cause people who become infected. Her work is being considered for Best Investigative News story in Ontario. She also earned an award last year for best national news story. So let’s celebrate all journalists for the work they do every day to shine a spotlight on truths we need to know.

Does region not understand transit users? Re: Cheap gas prices take toll on public transit: bit.ly/1o7GNgC and GO shuttle could be boom or bust for commuters: bit.ly/1LErgtC, Feb. 11. Why are decisions on transportation made by shortsighted planners and politicians’ driving us to gridlock? Two stories are worth following. The first one has York Region’s transportation commissioner complaining how cheap gas prices have led to dropping transit ridership numbers, using data from October to December 2015. Does the region not understand its customers? It’s winter. I would suspect this trend would repeat seasonally. Perhaps York Region’s transportation commissioner was using forecasted numbers he believed would be added by the opening of the rapidways? Unfortunately, building duplicate services does not duplicate ridership. The only relevant numbers dropping besides the temperature are total tax revenues extracted from drivers at the pumps. Here, I segue into the second story: GO shuttle boom or bust. The region has an additional $15 million of gas tax dollars extracted at the pumps and is

now debating its use. While politicians want to focus, and I quote, on the “last mile” of a commuter’s journey, I would ask to refocus on the shortcomings of the first mile. The article highlights Aurora’s inadequate Wellington Street commuter lot and the overflow parking in nearby parks. It is clear what commuters want, need and have paid for through their gas tax. What is not clear is if the war on cars is more important than building ridership. We can debate the reasons people may not want to add extra commute time, may not want to stand in the freezing cold or pouring rain or walk through slush to get to a shuttle. We could build another bureaucracyduplicating service already there or we could build another parking facility for the GO train that is critically needed to increase an already loyal ridership. One thing’s for sure: Let’s build something people will actually use and perhaps that will be the first step to turn drivers into riders.

City eyes fine increase for illegal parking

Only $24.95 • 11am–1pm Every Sunday Vast selection of breakfast, chef’s creations and savory items to choose from including a beautiful dessert section!

The city is poised to impose stiffer fines on those who park illegally. Vaughan’s committee of the whole, Tuesday, approved a staff recommendation to hike penalties for 30 of 32 infractions contained in the city’s parking bylaw, with proposed increases ranging from $5 to $50. For instance, the fine for parking on the road longer

than three hours between 6 a.m. and 2 a.m. is set to rise to $40 from $35. Same goes for parking on the road between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. The fine for parking in a fire route, meanwhile, will jump to $150 from $100. But the penalty for parking within 15 metres of a level railway crossing is going to drop to $50 from $55 while the fine for parking in a

space designated for people with disabilities will remain unchanged at $300. Hiking the penalties is expected to generate an extra $197,000 annually for the city’s coffers. City council still has to give the final stamp of approval to the proposed increases still have to get a final stamp of approval froml before they come into effect. That is expected to happen later this month.

Provincial budget: transit a big win locally, Del Duca stresses By Tim Kelly

tkelly@yrmg.com

Vaughan and King residents shouldn’t be surprised the transport minister is touting transit as a big win for them in the recent provincial budget. Steven Del Duca, also Vaughan MPP, said last Friday that a “$160 billion investment in infrastructure including for transit over a 12-year period means those who really grapple with gridlock… will have less time behind the wheel and more time with their families.” Del Duca also said in future years more people will be able to take GO trains along the Barrie corridor every 15 minutes in both directions, trains that service commuters in Vaughan and King. “We are double-tracking GO to Barrie right now. We will see increased trips along the Barrie corridor in the next few years and somewhere in the neighbourhood of six, seven

Artist rendering of the new Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital, to be situated at Jane Street and Major Mackenzie Drive area in Vaughan. years, maybe eight at the outside, the Barrie corridor will have trains running in both directions every 15 minutes. Those trains will be electrified. That’s a phenomenal change,” said the transportation minister. He also talked about widening Hwy. 400 from Major Mackenzie Road in Vaughan to King Road in King City. It will expand from eight lanes to 10 lanes with the work

expected to finish by 2018-19, said Del Duca. Finally, the minister pointed out the budget specifically mentioned the new hospital in Vaughan, Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital, which he said will see major construction begin by the end of 2016. “That’s phenomenal news for a community that’s waited patiently for a number of a years to get the hospital,” he said.

Police say he is the vaulter bandit, a man with a long and fascinating history. Lead Det.-Sgt. Mike Fleischaker said after multiple robberies in a row, 12 of which took place in Markham, Richmond Hill and Vaughan, Shuman finally made a mistake when he robbed a Mississauga bank on Mother’s Day in May 2015. The vaulter bandit changed the way he had been robbing banks since the mid1990s. That technique involved the vaulter using his toned physic to leap over counters, grab money and dash. But on this day, the bandit turned up on the morning in question, after hours of recognizance, dressed as a construction worker. And when staff arrived to open the bank, he accosted them and led them to the safe with a pistol at their backs. After grabbing the cash he fled, locking the women, one of whom was pregnant, in the vault. He left one key “part of his robbery kit” behind, according to Peel Regional Police’s acting Supt. Dave Woodland.

“He realized he had forgotten it, but it was too late,” Woodland said, noting his hesitation was clearly visible on the video. Police took the item and used forensics to trace the man’s DNA. Nothing turned up in Canada. But a break came three days after they shipped the evidence south. The DNA was traced to Shuman, a dual American/ French citizen, who had a conviction for robbing 14 banks in the southern United States in the 1990s. Back then, he was called the ‘Reebok bandit’, according to police, because of the white tennis shoes he would often wear. Despite facing a federal sentence of countless years, Shuman was handed a 12-year sentence in Georgia in 1995. Nine years later, when he was allowed to leave on a supervised release, he fled. The former U.S. Navy man had been in Europe ever since, police say. After police tracked his movements for a month, Shuman was nabbed in Geneva, Switzerland in September. When it came time for

two officers to bring Shuman back to Canada to face the courts, they said he was far from through with his alleged tricks. While on a commercial flight, moments after the pilot announced the plane was travelling over France, Shuman grabbed his chest, complained of chest pains and flung himself off his seat, landing in the aisle and convulsing, according to police. “Our officers knew he was faking,” said Fleischaker. “But they had to land the plane, the safety of the passengers has to be considered.” Luckily for York police, the pilot chose to land in the United Kingdom rather than France, where it might have proved difficult to continue Shuman’s extradition due to his French citizenship. After UK doctors found there was nothing wrong with Shuman, it was up to the Ministry for the Attorney General to hire a private jet to bring him back to Canada. Shuman is now languishing in the Lindsay penitentiary awaiting his chance to plea to 30 charges relating to his alleged 21 robberies through the GTA and four in Calgary.

Between ‘too little and too much’

A client of mine once asked me when I started coaching, and I facetiously replied, “When I was five.” For much of my life, even as a child, I was able to listen to the things people said and extract the deeper meaning beneath their words. This gift has helped me assist many to create better lives for themselves while also building a career that is both rewarding and fulfilling for me. Yet, as I look back, it has become clear that this great strength in one area of my life has also been a great liability in another. In my professional life, my clients come to see me so I can assist them to tell the truth, to see things in a different light and create tangible next steps so they can feel safe and secure again in their lives. But in my relationships, my partners were often looking for something quite different. It’s not that they didn’t want to uncover a deeper truth or entertain a new perspective, they just didn’t want it in that moment. Many times they were simply looking for comfort when things weren’t going

Timothy Barlow It’s All Good well, to share how they’re feeling and feel my arms around them so they could feel safe again. Even though I think I knew this at the time, I still found myself trying to talk anyway and help them see things in a different light. It seems I unwittingly hurt them by focusing on what I thought they needed rather than being aware of what they actually wanted. Ironically, what makes me a great coach also made me a lousy boyfriend at times. There is a Finnish proverb that says, “Happiness is a place between too little and too much.” How do we find that place in

between? Because I was afraid and when we’re afraid, we tend to go to what we know. It wasn’t that I didn’t feel their fear. I did, but it also brought up a feeling of helplessness inside me that didn’t sit well, so my response was to do what I do best, which didn’t end up making things better – it actually made them worse. I think we all do this dance in one form or another. Some of us are strong when it comes to seeing the black and white in life and can struggle when a little more grey is required, and vice versa. We can’t always see things in the moment. But in hindsight, we can sift through our past and be honest about what we see. If you, too, can see that you have overcompensated on one of your gifts, as I have with mine, rather than regret it, try to appreciate it instead, understanding that recognizing it is the first step to changing it. Timothy Barlow is a perspective coach who lives and works in Vaughan. His column appears every other Thursday in The Vaughan Citizen. E-mail tbarlow@madtoglad.com

Real estate agents are often affiliated with sellers instead of buyer’s. This means their primary goal is to help the seller and not the buyer. When shopping around for a real estate agent, ask companies about their buyer’s agents. Buyers should always have someone with their interests in mind, and not the interests of the sellers. FIND SOMEONE WITH A TRACK RECORD. Real estate can be an exciting and financially rewarding industry in which to work. As a result, lots of people want to be real estate agents, even though few succeed and last a long time. When interviewing real estate agents, inquire about their history in the business. A more experienced agent will make things far less stressful and easier, and a long career indicates they are good at what they do. A real estate agent with a long history in the business will likely be a full-time agent as well. Prospective buyers should look for a full-time agent, which is not as common as some buyers might think. Many agents work part-time, and buyers could receive less attention as a result.

How to Find the

RIGHT REAL ESTATE AGENT

DON’T PLACE TOO MUCH EMPHASIS ON AGENCY SIZE. Real estate agencies come in all shapes and sizes. When it comes to ability, the size of the agency should not factor in. A smaller independent agency can be just as qualified and reliable as one of the major franchise agencies. Buyers who find someone they trust should go with that person, regardless of how big or small their agency is.

One way to make the process a lot less anxiety-ridden is to work with a real estate agent you can trust. Those who have previously purchased a home might already have a strong relationship with a real estate agent. But for those moving out of their current location or buying for the first time, finding the right real estate agent requires some

resources. Buyers looking in “Town X” who have friends or family already living there should consult those friends or family and ask for any agent referrals. Those relocating because of work should ask their company to refer an agent. Chances are companies have relocated employees in the past and might have a strong relationship with an agency in town.

Buying a home is often a difficult thing to do. The stress of making such a big financial commitment is a struggle for many home buyers, whether they have purchased a home GET A REFERRAL. in the past or are doing so for the first time. Friends and family members who have been through the buying process before might be great

Six-figure score A Kleinburg woman has scored a six-figure lottery win. Vittoria Lanzino garnered $100,000 in the Feb. 3 Lotto 6/49 draw by matching six of seven numbers on her ENCORE selection, which can be played on most lottery games by paying an extra $1. Lanzino bought her winning ticket at Brownsville Drugs on Highway 27 in Schomberg.

Approximately $6.9 million went toward the official plan as well as the related studies, secondary plans and design guidelines it contains. Another $1.2 million went to dealing with Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) appeals and external legal services. Iafrate said she’s concerned that given there still are dozens of appeals to be dealt with the city could wind up spending millions more. And she noted a recent decision by the majority of council, against the advice of city planning staff and a “strong” warning from the provincial government, to postpone adoption into the official plan of an updated map for the Natural Heritage Network (NHN), environmentally significant or sensitive areas to be protected from development, is generating more appeals. “It’s the bottomless pit OP (official plan),” Iafrate said. “We just keep throwing money in there and money in there.” City staff provided some reasons for the rising costs at a finance committee meeting Monday. John MacKenzie, deputy city manager of planning and growth management, said one factor is that Vaughan is growing rapidly and developers are responding to changing demands in the housing

market. He also noted it’s relatively easy to file an OMB appeal so some developers will do it simply to “buy time” until they figure out what they want to do with their land. Another factor, is the size, scope and complexity of the official plan, especially as it relates to the new downtown core, known as the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre, being built around the future subway station in the Jane Street and Hwy. 7 area, MacKenzie said. “I think that’s part of the magnitude of the costs and challenges that we’re facing here related to the fact that it’s a bold city building opportunity and there are extensive issues that you have to address as part of it,” he said. There have also been some protracted battles in areas earmarked for intensification where some developers are bringing forward applications for condominium or townhouse complexes and residents are staunchly opposed, he added. Those explanations appeared to satisfy some councillors who attended the meeting — Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua, Deputy Mayor Michael Di Biase, Tony Carella (Woodbridge West), Rosanna DeFrancesca (Woodbridge East) and Alan Shefman (Thornhill). “We had to start over from scratch and that is a monumental

process that we’re not yet at the end of, but take heart we will get there some day,” Carella said. “And about a week later, we’ll have to start on a review, but, hey, that’s the way it is, unfortunately.” DeFrancesca, meanwhile, said the official plan is meant to provide a vision for how the city will grow, but it’s subject to change. “It’s a live document, constantly moving, and that’s why we have appeals and changes and OP applications and amendments,” she said. “Yes, it’s a vision, but there’s so many things at play. We have a market that we have to deal with and the market has changed significantly in the last five years and we have to be cognizant of that. … Yes, we have to defend our OP (official plan), but we also have a responsibility to the public to develop because development gives us DCs (development charges) and development gives us taxes empty land gives us nothing.” But Iafrate says she’s not sure how to justify the growing price tag to residents given the official plan, in many areas of the city, hasn’t prevented some developers from building projects that are contrary to what the plan envisions. “We need to stop bleeding the taxpayers because taxpayers aren’t seeing any benefit to this,” she said. City solicitor Heather Wilson said staff are trying to mitigate future

Touring duo stresses creating a positive profile on social media By Teresa Latchford

tlatchford@yrmg.com

Young people had best watch what they post on social media, as future employers are watching. That’s the sobering message from My Life Online founders Blake Fly, who hails from Richmond Hill, and Dave Anderson, during a visit to York Region, Monday. It is becoming increasingly important to create a positive profile of one’s self on social media because potential employers frequently Google or search social media to find information beyond a potential hire’s submitted resume. The duo travels throughout North America to speak to students about constructing such a social media profile, using three questions before hitting the ‘Post’ button. Today, they presented to York Catholic District School Board students at the Ed Tech Day event focused on showing 175 student leaders how to utilize technology, such as coding, robotics, green screen movie-making, Google Draw, Read and Write and Lego Wedo, to maximize learning. “Our hope is that by the end of this session you will

be able to hand an employer a resume and say, ‘Go ahead and Google me’ with confidence,” Anderson said. “I think your generation hit the jackpot and this is the best generation to grow up in.” However, with the presence of social media comes more responsibility to become skilled critical thinkers, problem solvers and to develop the ability to filter through the endless information users face every day. There are three questions every social media user should ask him or herself before posting a picture, video or post. First, is it true? If the answer is no, don’t post, but if the answer is yes, ask, ‘is it kind?’ Finally, determine if the post is really you. Anything posted online is there forever and is fair game for anyone to see, including potential employers. “We’re not saying this to freak you out, but rather to excite you,” Fly said. “You are already doing amazing things, so make that your focus. Make the most of every post.” This applies to how users treat others online as well as comments made on other posts. A user could

quickly be labelled as a bully, unkind, risky behaviour participant and more just from social media posts. “These three questions seem small, but they are actually massive,” Fly added. Grade 5 Holy Spirit Catholic Elementary School students Nancy Shnoudeh and Bridget Wodehouse were excited to attend the event at the school board headquarters in Aurora Feb. 29 because they feel technology makes learning easier and more fun. As for the keynote’s presentation, Nancy was surprised to find out employers are using Google to find out more about people applying for jobs, even for part-time positions. Despite being too young for a job at the moment, she will definitely be keeping this in mind when she posts in future. “I thought the whole presentation was pretty cool and (the presenters) were so energetic and upbeat,” Bridget said. “The three questions weren’t really anything I had heard about before, but I am going to start asking them before I post and tell my friends to do it too.”

Orville Hughes put his heart into everything By Brea Bartholet

bbartholet@yrmg.com

H

e was a man who wore many hats. Whether it was working on the farm, serving as one of Simcoe County’s wardens, a reeve for West Gwillimbury or spending time with his family, Orville Hughes always put his heart and soul into everything he did. Born Feb. 27, 1921, Hughes spent most of his childhood living life on his family farm in Dunkerron, just south of Bond Head, with his parents and two siblings, Irma and Roy. Hughes never strayed far from farm work, which maintained itself as a main income for him throughout most of his life. Unfortunately, his parents died young, forcing Hughes to establish a life of his own at the age of 20. But things began to look up when Hughes married the love of his life, Jean, in 1946. The couple happily welcomed four children — Jim, Brian, Marjorie and Edie — creating a loving environment at the farmhouse on Line 8 in West Gwillimbury, previously owned by Jean’s parents. Hughes spent countless hours tending to the family business. Son Brian says his fondest memories of his father go back to their days spent together on that very farm.

Lstories ife

“We worked together all our life. Even when I bought the farm in 1976 and my parents moved, he would come by to help out,” he said. “He was still active with farming, probably until he was close to 80 years old.” Aside from dedicating time to the farm, Hughes also had a keen interest in local politics and community service. In 1954, Hughes became a part of the local school board, while also maintaining the position of reeve of West Gwillimbury and, shortly thereafter, deputy reeve. In the midst of discovering what other things the growing community had to offer, Hughes eventually found himself intrigued with the Bradford Masonic Lodge and its long history. Many members saw Hughes as a true leader and, in 1975, he was designated as a Master for one term. In 2012, he received his 50th anniversary pin with the lodge. The following year, he switched gears, serving a oneyear term as warden for Simcoe County. Hughes also filled other positions throughout Simcoe County, including chairperson of the Plowing March in Barrie in 1981 and serving as a committee member in 1985 after a tornado ripped through the Holland Marsh, offering his help to rebuild what had

been lost. The list of Hughes’ accomplishments go on and on. In their later years, Hughes and Jean settled into a condo in Bradford West Gwillimbury’s downtown core in 1986, where the two spent quality time together until Jean passed away in January 2014. Daughter Marjorie recalled her father’s true resilience and commitment to his family, no matter how involved in community matters he became. “(Some) of the memories that I have best of my father are the many gatherings that we would have at our home. There was always a card game going on or a group of friends over for a special event,” she said. “My father worked very hard and I never remember him losing his temper at anyone during his political career or on the farm. He was always willing to listen to all sides of a problem and offer his opinion when asked.” Two years after his wife’s death, Hughes passed away peacefully at Kingsmere in Alliston on Jan. 31. Though the loss of her father is still relatively fresh, Marjorie says she will always appreciate the life he and her mother gave the family. “His accomplishments and anything that he may have gained in his life were done for his family. I am so very proud to say that I am his daughter.”

Celebrate a life well lived!

“Adored by children, universally respected and an inspiration to her peers, Mrs. McCluskey was a tireless volunteer, quick to deflect the praise heaped on her.”

Orville Hughes
