City councillors have put off making a decision about a controversial condominium proposal in the Woodbridge village core on properties where two of the community’s “most important” historic homes currently stand. Last week, councillors postponed a vote, to March 22, on a re-zoning application for three properties at the corner of Woodbridge Avenue and Wallace Street — where a developer is seeking to build a seven-storey, 119unit condominium — despite a recommendation from city planning to staff to approve the application. The matter was deferred to give city staff a chance to report back on potential options for dealing with the re-zoning application as well as a pending settlement of an official plan appeal by the developer for the same property.
A multi-faith conference in York Region Sunday shared a vision of women coming together to create peace in society. The Ahmadiyya Muslim Women’s Association hosted the conference at its national headquarters on Jane Street north of Major Mackenzie Drive in Vaughan. With the theme “Peace on our planet - our contribution,” the event drew more than 300 women from different religious, cultural and social organizations from Vaughan, Bradford, Newmarket, Richmond Hill, King City, Thornhill, Markham and other communities. The goal of the conference was to promote peace, foster relationships among different groups and push back against stereotypes associ-

Why should York keep waiting for subway?
Transit management out of touch with users
L
eave it to Canada’s largest national newspaper to pooh-pooh the idea of a Yonge subway extension line to Richmond Hill in a Monday editorial. The Toronto Star called the seven-kilometre link from the Finch terminal station to Richmond Hill, “an exercise in folly” and Toronto Mayor John Tory has told CP24: “We just can’t do it. How irresponsible would it be to have the trains, when they get to Finch, be so full, no one can get on?” For good measure, Toronto Transit Commission chairperson and Toronto councillor Josh Colle chimed in: “We’re nowhere near being in the position to extend Yonge north. It’s just not feasible right now.” The key words Colle said were “right now.” While a group of 16 York Region mayors, councillors and senior staff went to Ottawa to meet Prime Minister Justin Trudeau last week to push for infrastructure funds — as is their responsibility to the citizens of York Region — anyone who is expecting immediate action “right now” on the Yonge Street extension is dreaming in technicolour. There would be a ton of work to do before shovels could hit the ground on such a massive project. Consider, for instance, how long it’s taking to get the subway to Vaughan from Downsview station. The conception for the project was drawn up round the turn of the century and if it opens as scheduled, we’re looking at about a 17-year timeline. So when Colle says “right now,” does he mean within a decade or so or realistically speaking, are we talking closer to 20 years? If it’s the latter, which is far more reasonable, consider the number of transit projects that will be completed in Toronto by then. For starters, the Eglinton crosstown LRT will have long been in service. Then, you’ll have the Scarborough subway extension. Presumably, Mayor Tory’s Smartrack plan will have been implemented, and if all goes according to plan,
Tim Kelly by the early 2030s, it’s possible the downtown relief line might be underway or even finished. The Star argues all of these Toronto transit lines must be in place before a link to Richmond Hill should be considered. Why not proceed with planning, engineering and construction on a Richmond Hill line while all of these other projects are in the works? Why must it be an either/or proposition? Given the length of time complicated, massive transit projects with inevitable delays take, surely several can be underway simultaneously. The other important point is that improvements in subway efficiencies should mean more trains can run each hour, providing more capacity on each line and more passenger service. The TTC is working over the next three years to upgrade its 60-yearold system so that trains will run far more efficiently. That can only make the system smoother, more reliable and more open for expansion in the future. As gridlock on our roads continues to get worse over the next decade while our population grows, the call for transit solutions will only get stronger. The goal is to get people out of their cars and off the roads. The Star seems to think transit’s the ideal solution for Torontonians but, evidently, it thinks those of us in York Region can wait and wait and wait some more. But there’s no reason to wait indefinitely. Let’s get started on a Yonge line extension to Richmond Hill so we can ride the Rocket within 20 years.
Re: Cheap gas prices take toll on public transit: bit.ly/1o7GNgC and GO shuttle could be boom or bust for commuters: bit. ly/1LErgtC, Feb. 11. Read the above stories and you will understand how out of touch transit management is with commuters. A quick recap: In this first article, gas prices are dropping, so people are driving cars and not taking transit. How about the cost of transit fares going down correspondingly to keep existing riders and attract new ones? The second article is about a lack of parking at GO stations. I am not a transit expert, but if you want new commuters, why not give them a place to park? Make it easy. At Rutherford Road in Richmond Hill, we call it the Olympics because commuters run — and I mean run fast — to their cars, because, if you don’t get to your car quickly to get out of the parking lot, you can wait for 20 minutes to get out. Twenty minutes. Oh yeah, the GO train also charges to park in many locations up to $94 a month. In Aurora, the GO train super geniuses want to add more buses to take commuters to the GO train station because there is not enough parking. I suspect there will be a charge for buses

and parking (maybe) and train fare. The price tag for new buses is expected to be $15 million, funded by gas tax revenue. That is you and me, folks, paying for this. It sounds like placing a band-aid on a gushing wound. Here is a thought …. why not plan ahead? For example, we have a huge residential development progressing in Sharon. Why not start developing a multi-level parking structure at the station at East Gwillimbury with multiple exits, so commuters can easily leave. Try exiting on both Green Lane and Main Street to assist in disbursing traffic with stop lights that adjust for peak times. Look at Union Pearson (UP), the rail service from Union Station to the airport. It cost you and me about $500 million to set up and it is 90 per cent under-utilized. Why? The cost per person is almost as much as a limo, Uber or taxi, so, if two people are travelling together? Limo, it is. The UP passes commuters using other transit services wanting to go to downtown because the service was not integrated with other transit.

Beauty Gives Back for York Region couple By Lisa Queen
lqueen@yrmg.com
Theirs was definitely not love at first sight, but it didn’t take long for Mariarosa and Christian Schniering to develop an unbreakable bond. They met through an online dating website. Tired of failed dates, he was just about to bail on the site and almost grudgingly decided to go out with her as a friend as a parting farewell to his online dating days. He made her pay half the cheque for their meal. He thought she was too short. She thought he was an “arrogant ass.” But for some reason, they kept in touch. It was after Christian returned to his native Germany to help his mother celebrate her 60th birthday that he decided he wanted a love like his parents’ with Mariarosa. They began dating and their romance over the next six months grew more serious. At the same time, Mariarosa was feeling tired and battling recurring bouts of strep throat as she worked as a teacher at St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic High School in Aurora, finished her master’s degree at York University and wrote a chapter for a textbook. In January 2014, the Newmarket woman was diagnosed with leukemia. Fearful she wouldn’t survive and believing it was too much to ask her boyfriend of only six months to stay by her side, Mariarosa begged Christian to move on with his life. “When you go through something like that, you start to think about the people around you and you think it’s happening to me, so I have to go through it, but the people around me don’t need to suffer,” said Mariarosa, whose family lives in Woodbridge. “This (leukemia) is something I will take, I will accept and I will fight through, but everything with him was still so new. He had so much that he was focusing on. He just applied
to his masters in business, just so many things that he was going to start on in his life. You never want to be that hindering factor.” But Christian wasn’t going anywhere. He stayed by Mariarosa’s hospital bedside, slept on the windowsill when there were no chairs, laid beside her as she recovered from treatments, held her hand when she vomited and lightened her spirits with smiles and corny sayings. He assured her he would stay by her side, even when full-body radiation, needed as part of a bone marrow transplant Mariarosa endured, with her brother Alfonso as donor, meant she may never be able to have children. As she lay in her hospital bed, on morphine, she and Christian planned their wedding, which took place on Valentine’s Day last year. Nominated by Mariarosa, Christian has been named the first winner of the Facing Cancer Together CoSurvivor Award, given by national cancer advocacy group, Beauty Gives Back. Beauty Gives Back, a charitable initiative led by the Canadian beauty industry, supports women with cancer through programs such as Look Good Feel Better, which boosts their self-confidence by helping to mitigate the effects of cancer and treatment on their appearance. Its online cancer-support community, facing cancer.ca, a program of the Canadian Cosmetic,Toiletry and Fragrance Association, is now looking for nominations for its 2016 award. Sitting in the kitchen of their Newmarket home, Mariarosa and Christian talked about their courtship, their frightening journey together through her illness and their future. Christian, who heads the Canadian sales site for a Germany company, admitted he was scared when Mariarosa got her diagnosis. “We just started dating, six months before, and, obviously, there were some decisions to be made on my end. Do I want to go
through this, do I just want to leave and call it quits and I live my life, you live yours and we maybe see each other in the next life or whatever?” he said. “I made the decision to stay. It’s a crazy little thing called love. There was something I felt inside that said I don’t want to go, I’m not ready to leave, I’m not willing to leave. It was what I wanted to do, not the right thing to do, what I wanted to do.” Mariarosa is now cancer-free.

11 Critical Home Inspection Traps to be Aware of Weeks Before Listing Your Vaughan Home for Sale
Vaughan - According to industry experts, there are over 33 physical problems that will come under scrutiny during a home inspection when your home is for sale. A new report has been prepared which identifies the eleven most common of these problems, and what you should know about them before you list your home for sale. Whether you own an old home or a brand new one, there are a number of things that can fall short of requirements during a home inspection. If not identified and dealt with, any of these 11
items could cost you dearly in terms of repair. That’s why it’s critical that you read this report before you list your home. If you wait until the building inspector flags these issues for you, you will almost certainly experience costly delays in the close of your home sale or, worse, turn prospective buyers away altogether. In most cases, you can make a reasonable pre-inspection yourself if you know what you’re looking for, and knowing what you’re looking for can help you prevent little problems from growing into costly and unmanageable ones.
To help homesellers deal with this issue before their homes are listed, a free report entitled “11 Things You Need to Know to Pass Your Home Inspection” has been compiled which explains the issues involved. To hear a brief recorded message about how to order your FREE copy of this report call toll-free 1- 800-324-3520 and enter 1003. You can call any time, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Get your free special report NOW to learn how to ensure a home inspection doesn’t cost you the sale of your home.

Daud: Conference organized by women for women sends powerful message From front page
-ated with Islam, Amtul Noor Daud, national president of the women’s association, said. While terrorism is committed by extremists, Islam is a religion of peace, she said. “This is a very important message today because Islam is being associated with terrorism and that is absolutely the wrong portrayal of Islam and we, as followers of Islam, we want to show the world the true picture that is associated with absolute peace,” she said. “The religious aspect of Islam is truly beautiful. It is just peace and love and kindness and mercy for everyone.” A conference organized by women for women sends a meaningful message, Daud said. “The image that society and some media have (is) that Muslim women are oppressed, they can’t do anything, they have no choice of career, they can’t live in society while being oppressed,” the Vaughan resident said. “Being a Muslim organization, we want to show the world that yes, we can do everything within the teachings of Islam, within the boundary of Islam, having our veils on, we are nothing less than women of other religions.” Association representative Sadaf Shah, a resident of Bradford, also spoke of Islam as a religion of peace. “Islam teaches us that unless man learns to live at peace with himself and

his fellow beings, he can’t live at peace with God,” she said. “A Muslim can only be considered best in the sight of God if he or she can be of service to mankind.” However, if Islam is about peace and serving humanity, then why are some Muslim groups around the world engaging in brutal acts of terrorism, Shah said. “Terrorism is a global problem and needs to be studied in its larger perspective. Unless we understand the forces behind the violence, we will not be able to understand why some Muslim groups and states are turning to terrorism to achieve certain objectives,” she said. She referred to research showing suicide bombings have more to do with secular and strategic goals to compel modern democracies to withdraw military forces from territories that terrorists consider their homelands than they do with Islamic fundamentalism or other religions. “Islam is as far removed from terrorism as light is from darkness. It is not the exploiter but itself is being abused by internal or external (groups) for political interests,” Shah said. The conference was impressive, especially as it was held only two days before International Women’s Day on Tuesday, Vaughan Councillor Marilyn Iafrate said. “What better celebration to be at than this, where we have women here for a common cause - peace, global peace, peace on
earth, which really at the end of the day, whether it’s the whole world or within our families, we all want and strive for the same thing. We want peace,” she said. Vaughan Councillor Rosanna DeFrancesca said she was touched by the number of women participating in the conference. “I think as women, we have an important role in society to educate our children, our communities and our nation, at the end of the day, about peace and love and faith,” she said. “I think women need the support of other women and I encourage all of you to support each other because we deal with so many issues in our community and some of them are so similar. At the end of the day, we are all somebody’s daughter, we are somebody’s sister, we are mothers, we are wives and we share the same challenges in life. So, let’s stick together.” DeFrancesca said she agreed with another speaker who said women will one day be the true leaders of the world. “I agree with her 100 per cent because we have passion, compassion and love in our hearts,” she said. “As Canadians, we are so blessed with peace in our country and diversity. And it’s important to educate our children that this peace and diversity and togetherness is not always shared around the world and that we have to strive and we have so much more work to do to achieve the greatness we have in this country in every country around the world.”

There’s plenty of room in Vaughan for Toronto transit
So, from the ivory tower of One Yonge Street, it wasn’t enough the Toronto Star’s tall foreheads saw fit to dump on the idea of a Yonge subwayline extension to Richmond Hill in a Monday editorial. No. On Tuesday, Star GTA columnist Edward Keenan had to get personal. From his perch in the tower, Keenan rubbed it in and trashed Vaughan. He didn’t mince words either.
Tim Kelly Some of the choice bits: • “It is a dystopian sub-
urban landscape of endless asphalt dotted with scrubgrass and children’s birthday party venues.” • “It feels like an asphalt version of the vast desert autodrome battlegrounds of Mad Max: Fury Road, except with some roller coasters.” • “It looks more like horror-movie screenwriting than urban planning to me.” I could go on but you get the point. The oddest thing about
the piece however is its headline in the newspaper: “No room for Vaughan in Toronto transit.” Unless the headline writer or columnist has been asleep for the last decade, there is plenty of room for Vaughan in Toronto transit. As in, Vaughan will have a subway terminal opening on the Spadina line by the end of 2017. And Vaughan will be the first municipality outside of Toronto to have a subway

stop on the TTC. Vaughan is still largely a growing city as evidenced by the population explosion over the past two decades. It will have a spectacular “downtown” of its own, once the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre is built out in 15-20 years, around the subway stop. But it will take time and patience to get there. Yes Vaughan is not Toronto, but it also doesn’t have the pollution, the crime and

POLICE

By Jeremy Grimaldi

A police officer has described the terrifying moment he says he and a colleague were almost run over by an armed-robbery suspect who allegedly tried to flee police capture. York Regional Police Const. Steve Borovskis took the stand in the attempted murder trial of Ricky De Sousa, 37, on Tuesday at Newmarket court. He recounted how it was in Toronto on Dec. 10, 2010 when he and his police colleagues tried to arrest De Sousa, a suspect in a series of knife-point conveniencestore robbery, including one in Vaughan. The Crown alleges he was about to commit a further robbery before the police interception. After allegedly pinning De Sousa’s vehicle in on Weston Road in Toronto, using a number of police cruisers, Borovskis said he approached the front of De Sousa’s purple caravan with his gun drawn, pointing it at De Sousa. After calling out “police”, “turn off your car” and “you’re under arrest”, he said he remembers looking inside the vehicle and seeing the look on De Sousa’s face. “I remember looking in, directly at him, (he had) a frozen or stunned look,” the place officer told the court. “He raised both hands off the steering wheel, I could see both of them through the windshield. He was looking right at me.” Borovskis said that moment, during which he
continued to yell at De Sousa, lasted about two seconds, during which, the vehicle was quiet. While he was doing so, he said Det. Const. Frank Abreu approached the driver side window of the caravan and “engaged” De Sousa. “That’s when the noise changed dramatically and the engine of the Caravan started revving dramatically,” he said. Borovskis also noticed a change in De Sousa’s behaviour. “His demeanour had completely changed,” he added. “Like a complete flip of the switch. I could hear the governor giving out, in my opinion, the gas pedal was being pressed to the floor. I can remember the look on his face... He aggressively had two hands on the wheel... engaged and there’s a purpose there.” As all of this was occurring, Borovskis said his visibility was diminished by tire smoke, filling the air as the Caravan built up “inertia” about to “bust loose” from the three or more police cruisers that had pinned it in place. “The Caravan is now rocking, jumping back and forth,” he said. “If this car comes loose, it’s going to run me over. I can only imagine what’s going to happen to Det. Const. Abreu... He’d be seriously injured if not killed. The chance for me to be run over is incredibly high. There was no doubt in my mind that that vehicle was going to bust loose.” Although he was aimed at
De Sousa, about to fire, he said another colleague, Det. Doug Bedford appeared in his line of sight. Although he held back at this point, he said he heard four or five shots fired from another gun. The car then broke loose and began to travel down the street. After checking if he and his colleagues were OK as the smoke began to lift, Borovskis said they gave pursuit. “We look at each other, it’s only happened a few times in my career, and ask each other, ‘Are you OK’,” he added. When the officers finally caught up to the Caravan, which was clearly damaged and only just trundling down the road, Borovskis said he opened the passenger door to find De Sousa’s passenger, Antonio Da Silva, who was screaming in agony, in a “unique” way. Da Silva, who was bleeding badly, then uttered the words, “he’s f***ing crazy, he’s a crazy driver, he’s crazy”, he said. He added that De Sousa was also screaming once handcuffed. Borovskis said he was not injured, but he remembers Abreu had an injured hand. During the incident, De Sousa had his finger shot off and Da Silva suffered an injury to his head. De Sousa’s defence lawyer, Kerry Evans, said he would be calling a police procedure expert, explaining that officers created an “environment of danger” involving “chaos and confusion”, leading De Sousa’s actions. The trial continues.

The Vaughan Voyageurs experienced a bout of déjà vu when they took to the hardwood court at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations AAA boys’ basketball playdowns in Windsor Tuesday. Unfortunately for the York Region Athletic Association champions who were the tournament’s second seed, it ended on a painful note after they were eliminated for the second straight year by the Waterloo-based Sir John A. Macdonald Lions. While last year’s loss transpired in the second round, this year’s rematch went one round further as it occurred during the quarter-finals. And like last year, it was a closely contested match with the Voyageurs coming out on the short end in this year’s game 59-57. “It was definitely disappointing since we lost to them last year also by two points,” lamented Voyageurs’ head coach Gus Gymnopoulos, “But give credit to them (Sir John A Macdonald), they’re a quality team.” Playing the game without the services of starter and one of their key defenders in Kordeiro James, who hurt
his knee, along with starters William Tran and Andrew Nembhard who also battled minor injuries but soldiered on, the Voyageurs dug themselves into a hole from the onset as they trailed 13-7 after the first quarter and were still down by six at the half 27-21. After the Lions put a bit of breathing room between themselves and Voyageurs when they led 46-36 after three quarters, the Voyageurs made a last-ditch effort in the final eight minutes of regulation play before falling short.
We had our chances to win the game. But at the end of the day, we didn’t play well enough. –Gus Gymnopoulos What might have haunted the Voyageurs in the final quarter was their failure to convert three layups and at the free throw line where they missed six charity tosses. Tran was high scorer for the Voyageurs with 14 points. Not wishing to make excuses in playing the game with a team that was not 100 per cent physically, Gymnopoulos felt a big factor in

their loss was in battling a case of the nerves. Especially since they were facing virtually the same Lions team that eliminated them last year at OFSAA. The results surfaced in their offensive production during the first half. “I think the guys knew the game was a bit blown out of propostion after what happened last year (which also saw Gymnopoulos go on the social media afterwards to chastise the officiating and which eventually had sanctions placed against him for most of this season by the Ontario Association of Basketball Officials). “Where pressure shows itself is on offence where you need a clear mind and to stay relaxed. In the first half we had just 21 points. We haven’t scored that little in a half all year.” Along with that, Gymnopolous was quick to note defensively they could not find an answer to stopping the Lions’ six-foot, five-inch forward Nedim Hadzic. That was where James’ absence was heavily felt. “Their big guy was hard to stop,” cited Gymnopoulos. “He’s been averaging close to 30 points a game for them. “We had our chances to win the game. But at the end of the day, we didn’t play well enough.”

It is estimated the festivals and events industry in Ontario generates more than $2.3 billion annually and creates and sustains 50,000 full-year-equivalent jobs. Submissions from FEO members were received for consideration in 2015 and an independent panel of judges selected the events on the list. Festivals and events of all kinds from every corner of the province were represented in the applications. Couple launches lawsuit over baby’s death A Richmond Hill couple is suing Mackenzie Health for medical misconduct after the death of their baby son. Rebecca Bonnell learned from her obstetrician a month after her newborn’s death in December 2014, that the eight-day-old infant had died of an E. coli infection, due to a hospital error. In a $900,000 civil suit filed in court, Patrick and Rebecca Bonnell allege they independently discovered the reason their child had died: A blood test result was apparently never seen by doctors at the time baby Kieran was struggling for life. After confronting the hospital, the couple were told Mackenzie Health officials had also identified the problem in an internal audit a few weeks prior and were about to call the couple, according to the statement of claim. The hospital issued a rare written apology to the couple, acknowledging the mistake. Allegations in the statement of claim have not been proven in court and no statement of defence has yet been filed by Mackenzie Health. Hospital officials declined an interview, citing the case before the courts. But in a written statement, a hospital spokeswoman, Melina Cormier, said: “Mackenzie Health is committed to continuous open, honest, and transparent communication with patients and their families relating to all incidents. ... When an inci-
dent occurs, the hospital analyzes the incident and a plan is developed with systemic steps to avoid or reduce the risk of further incidents. This plan is also shared with the patient and/or family.” In a letter to the couple dated May 22, 2015, Altaf Stationwala, the hospital’s president and CEO, wrote of “how sorry we are for this error and for the loss of your son Kieran.” An investigation had found “the system for critical results reporting for discharged patients from emergency was found to be faulty and resulted in the result not being escalated,” the letter reads. The hospital’s response was too little, too late, Rebecca Bonnell said. “If they had just showed us they were making policy changes and make a sincere statement that, ‘We messed up and we’re fixing it,’ it would have made a big difference,” Rebecca said. “... if they offered openness, it would have meant so much to us and our grieving.” The Bonnells’ story is surprisingly common in Canada. So-called adverse events affect tens of thousands of Canadian families every year. A study in 2004 concluded that 7.5 per cent of all Canadian hospital admissions end in adverse events — 185,000 cases a year, of which nearly 70,000 are potentially preventable. - Robert Cribb, Toronto Star

Finding a trustworthy and experienced real estate agent can help make the process of buying a home much less stressful.
$782,500
effort. Those in the market for an agent to help navigate the home buying process should consider the following tips. FIND A BUYER’S AGENT. Real estate agents are often affiliated with sellers instead of buyer’s. This means their primary goal is to help the seller and not the buyer. When shopping around for a real estate agent, ask companies about their buyer’s agents. Buyers should always have someone with their interests in mind, and not the interests of the sellers. FIND SOMEONE WITH A TRACK RECORD. Real estate can be an exciting and financially rewarding industry in which to work. As a result, lots of people want to be real estate agents, even though few succeed and last a long time. When interviewing real estate agents, inquire about their history in the business. A more experienced agent will make things far less stressful and easier, and a long career indicates they are good at what they do. A real estate agent with a long history in the business will likely be a full-time agent as well. Prospective buyers should look for a full-time agent, which is not as common as some buyers might think. Many agents work part-time, and buyers could receive less attention as a result.
How to Find the
RIGHT REAL ESTATE AGENT
DON’T PLACE TOO MUCH EMPHASIS ON AGENCY SIZE. Real estate agencies come in all shapes and sizes. When it comes to ability, the size of the agency should not factor in. A smaller independent agency can be just as qualified and reliable as one of the major franchise agencies. Buyers who find someone they trust should go with that person, regardless of how big or small their agency is.
One way to make the process a lot less anxiety-ridden is to work with a real estate agent you can trust. Those who have previously purchased a home might already have a strong relationship with a real estate agent. But for those moving out of their current location or buying for the first time, finding the right real estate agent requires some
resources. Buyers looking in “Town X” who have friends or family already living there should consult those friends or family and ask for any agent referrals. Those relocating because of work should ask their company to refer an agent. Chances are companies have relocated employees in the past and might have a strong relationship with an agency in town.
Buying a home is often a difficult thing to do. The stress of making such a big financial commitment is a struggle for many home buyers, whether they have purchased a home GET A REFERRAL. in the past or are doing so for the first time. Friends and family members who have been through the buying process before might be great

Vaughan crash victims honoured with car magnet initiative Backed by the power of a 43,000-strong Facebook group, the Neville-Lake family is supporting an initiative that honours the tragic death of their three young children at the hands of a drunk driver. Magnets with the picture of Daniel, Harry and Milly Neville-Lake on them are being sold containing the statement, “Don’t Drink and Drive,” and “Not One More.” The Neville-Lake children along with their grandfather, Gary Neville, were killed in a
horrific crash last September in Vaughan. Marco Muzzo of King has pleaded guilty in the crash and will be sentenced on March 24. He faces a sentence of eight to 12 years. Jennifer Neville-Lake and Edward Lake, parents of the children, are supporting the car-magnet initiative that raises $1 for Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Canada. The decision was made after dozens of residents trekked to city hall during last week’s snowstorm to speak out against the proposal put forward by Cityzen Development Group and Fernbrook Homes. In order to facilitate the proposed condo, the developer plans on preserving a portion of the Dr. Peter McLean House, built in 1893, and a portion of the Thomas Frazier Wallace House, built in 1875, but wants to move them forward on the property to the sidewalk. The developer also wants to level the hilly property and remove several large trees, according to a city staff report. Members of the Village of Woodbridge Ratepayers Association along with several area residents argued the proposed building, which many described as institutional-looking, would overwhelm the heritage homes. “The two contributing buildings on the property are not just a couple of old houses, they are two of the key residences for some of the village’s most prominent families,” said resident Jamie Maynard, whose family has lived in the community for several generations. “The Wallace House is a standout in Woodbridge due to its architectural quality, but also as the longtime home of the Wallace family.” Maynard noted the city’s heritage guidelines for Woodbridge Village states that buildings of historical significance should not be re-located and that “new buildings should be sympathetic to the adjacent contributing (heritage) buildings.” “It might be said that these are guidelines and can be overruled. My question is this, why then do we have these guidelines (and) under what circumstances would we enforce them, if not this location?” Maynard said. “(This property) is, perhaps, the key remaining remnant of the original village landscape with two of the most important houses in the village.” Residents also don’t want to see the mature trees on the properties cut down, arguing they add as much to the area’s heritage characteristics as the homes do. They also raised concerns about the impact the project would have

traffic and parking on Woodbridge Avenue, which they say is already heavily congested. “This project is just too big for this neighbourhood, the road infrastructure simply cannot handle it,” said resident Lou DeBellis. The residents submitted a petition bearing more than 200 signatures from people opposing the building. Christopher Tanzola, lawyer for the developer, told councillors on Tuesday his client held five community meetings and made changes to the proposal to address residents’ concerns, including reducing the height of the building from eight storeys to seven storeys and reducing the number of units from 146 to 119. “In our view, it’s been a successful process that’s led us to those changes,” Tanzola said. But, he noted, there are residents who remain unhappy. “From the developer’s point of view, it’s never going to be possible to please everyone,” Tanzola said. He also noted the trees would be cut down, in part, to allow for enhancements to be made the streetscape. The residents, meanwhile, insist that they’re not opposed to development, they simply want the developer to follow what is prescribed in the city’s official plan — and to respect the area’s heritage. “The Vaughan official plan says four storeys, they’re giving us seven. The Vaughan official plan says an FSI (floor space index) of one, they’re giving us 3.2,” said resident Pina Sacco. A few residents also expressed outrage that, in January, the city and the developer agreed to terms for settling the developer’s appeal of the official plan to the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB). Under the agreement, the city would allow the developer to erect a building that is higher (up to seven storeys) and larger than what is currently allowed under the official plan in exchange for the developer paying $100,000 toward streetscape “improvements” along Woodbridge Avenue. Before that agreement comes into force, it has to be approved by the OMB, which could happen as early as March 23. With files by TorStar News Network

A Canadian company specializing in stone, granite and tile has been fined $80,000 after two workers were injured in separate incidents at its warehouses in Vaughan. Ciot Toronto Inc. — an importer, distributor and retailer of stone, granite and tile — pleaded guilty March 7 to failing to follow requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Industrial Establishments Regulation in both incidents, according to a news release from the Ministry of Labour. The first incident took place March 11, 2014. A Ciot worker was removing bundles of stone slabs from a shipping container to place them in a company warehouse at 8899 Jane St., The slabs were stacked vertically in bundles and secured in place with wooden braces, the news release states. The worker had climbed to the top of the bundles using an A-frame ladder that was in a folded position leaning against the bundle of stone. He was carrying a 40-foot chain in one hand, which he planned to sling around the back of the bundle then hook to a forklift to pull the stone slabs out of the container. Before he could do that, the ladder slipped and the worker fell onto the top corner of the stone bundle breaking a bone and sustaining a cut. The company was fined $20,000 for that incident. The next day, a temporary agency worker employed at a warehouse at 350 Caldari Rd. was injured while helping a forklift operator, also a temporary employee, move 700pound stone slabs in the warehouse., according to the news release. In that case, the worker sustained internal injuries when some of the slabs fell on him as they were trying to move them from area of the warehouse to another using the forklift and a scissor clamp. The company received a $60,000 fine for that incident.

More than 6,000 abused women and children who turn to York Region’s Yellow Brick House every year will benefit from $116,000 raised at this year’s annual fundraiser. Donations from the 11th annual Mending Hearts, Creating Dreams Gala, held at Le Parc Banquet Hall in Concord on March 4, will be used to support the 24-hour crisis line and other services, Pamela Massaro, manager of resource development, said. She called the gala an
inspiring evening featuring a panel discussion, which included past-president Lynette Louise, football star Pinball Clemons’ wife, Diane, and York Regional Police Sgt. Cecile Hammond. “The panel discussion was an intimate discussion on past experiences with domestic abuse, what we need to do as a community to change and how can we support,” Massaro said. courage to leave dangerous and even potentially deadly situations at home. It also raises awareness of domestic abuse issues and advocates for changes in society. Yellow Brick House offers a crisis line that handles about 65 calls a week, two emergency shelters and Reta’s Place transitional housing, providing short-term affordable housing and services, such as counseling and legal support, for women as they find permanent accommodation.

Joanna Liokossis tears up as she talks about how her only son, Gianluca Cellucci, knew “when something wasn’t quite right with me.” Sitting in the Richmond Hill family home just weeks after Gianluca, 22, was stabbed to death in a Vaughan parking lot in the early hours of Feb. 7 – a Richmond Hill man is facing second degree murder charges – Joanna talked about the mother-son bond they shared. “I’d be standing there at the sink and he’d come up behind me, wrap his arms around me and say, ‘What’s wrong Mom?’” She said just days before he died, the young man came home from work late one evening. “He did something he used to do all the time when he was little. He lay down with me on the couch. I said, ‘What’s wrong?’ He said, ‘Nothing, I just want a hug, I just need a hug. Hugs are good.” I said: ‘Absolutely. Anytime. I’m here.” Joanna, husband Carmelo Cellucci and daughter Francesca lost a son and brother far too soon. “We, as a family, have been

he was just 12. “He held down four jobs throughout his life and all the people he worked for contributed in some way to his funeral. That’s the impact he made on people,” Carmelo said. His sense of friendship, what he would do for a buddy, sticks out for his uncle who recalled a story that brought it all home. “Gianluca got up at 4 a.m. to drive an hour-and-a-half to a friend’s cottage because his friend’s boat was sinking. And this was in October. It was because his friend said, ‘I need your help.’ That’s just who he was,” Cesidio said. His mother remembers another time her son said was “not his finest moment,” but one that revealed his character. “There was an accident. They were tossing a football back and forth at a friend’s house and the football hit the TV damaging it. Gianluca insisted on paying for it. The very next day he went out and bought a new TV. He was 18. He bought it because the parents were on holiday and he said, ‘I don’t want them to come back and see this. There’s no reason they should have to pay for it.’ He

He would come downtown and visit me and I would think to myself, when I was 20-something, that was the last thing on my mind. Yet he made a point of it,” Cesidio said. Memories of Gianluca as a little boy have come flooding back to Joanna in recent weeks. “I remember one time he was on the couch, he had tied his blanket around his neck and he yelled out, I think it was ‘Superman,’ and he jumped from one couch to another,” she said. Another time, Joanna, who used to teach, took her two young children to school and told them when she was at school, she was not mom, she was Mrs. Lioskossis. “All of a sudden, I get this really strong hug. He just needed to make contact. That’s how he was. He was always very affectionate. Just a real sweetheart.” She will miss his hugs the most.
