IMPLANTS ANDYOU!

A Mother’s Day welcome in Vaughan By Tim Kelly

tkelly@yrmg.com

Mother’s Day came two months early Sunday in Vaughan. The lucky moms were Syrian

refugees who have just arrived in Canada over the past three months with their families. And they got to enjoy the day courtesy of some hard work from a couple who felt it was important to give

the newcomers a taste of home. You see, March 21 is Mother’s Day in Syria, where the timing of the annual homage to mom is tied closely with the arrival of spring.

T

he McMichael Canadian Art Collection is marking its 50th anniversary this year and as part of the celebration, it’s breaking out the fine china, so to speak. The Kleinburg gallery’s newest exhibition On Paper, which opened last month and runs until May 1, will give visitors a glimpse at a selection of rarely seen works on paper from the McMichael’s permanent collection. “What’s special or of particular interest with respect to this exhibition… is that these works, because they’re works on paper, are only suitable for temporary exposure,” said Chris Finn, assistant curator at the McMichael. “We need to be able to exhibit them only for short periods of time and then they have to go into dark storage for an extended period of time just to balance out how much light exposure they actually get.” Among the pieces on display, is Emily Carr’s 56-page diary and sketchbook produced in 1903 during a visit to Europe and England, when she wound up hospitalized for 18-months to treat a persistent illness An iPad has been installed alongside it allowing visitors to scroll through its entire contents. The exhibition also boasts stunning watercolours by Group of Seven member A.J. Casson. “You can see different strategies that Casson was working with in terms of certain pre-planning,” Finn said. “You can see some of the graphite lines that were laid out in terms of establishing the composition, but he certainly did have the mastery and control of the medium.” There’s also a series of unique watercolours by David Milne, including Morning Paper, which

has never been publicly exhibited and was recently promised as a gift to the McMichael gallery. “He worked in a wide variety of media — he was doing oil painting as well as drypoint etchings – but this series of watercolours is really quite an interesting handling of the media,” Finn said. “A very atmospheric and very controlled application of the paint and colour.”

Group of Seven fans may also enjoy the series of seldom displayed, playful drawings by Arthur Lismer of Tom Thomson and members of the iconic group of Canadian landscape painters. “Lismer, according to comments Lawren Harris made, was always carrying pencils and papers and was this inveterate sort of draftsman who continued to produce works wherever,” Finn

said. “We have do have works in the collection where he’s taken a theatre program from a performance at The Arts and Letters Club and started sketching out a caricature of Lawren Harris. So he would draw on anything.” On Paper also features Clarence Gagnon’s original fifty-four artworks for Maria Chapdelaine, a novel written in 1913 by the French writer Louis Hémon based on his experiences in the Lac Saint-Jean district of Québec. Éditions Mornay, a book publisher in Paris, commissioned Gagnon to create the first colour illustrations for a new edition of the novel. “He originally resisted agreeing to this commission because of the amount of time required for producing these kinds of limited edition books because he was active as a painter and as printmaker,”

Finn explained. “It took a lot of encouragement and constant pressure from the publisher to get Clarence Gagnon to actually commit to doing this series.” It wound up taking Gagnon five years of intense work to complete the illustrations. “He would spend months and months and months developing studies before he reached a final work that would serve as the illustration in the book,” Finn said. The Maria Chapdelaine display also includes copies of the original limited-edition Éditions Mornay novel as well as the 1931 French periodical L’Illustration, which promoted the book. One of the first Maria Chapdelaine films, produced in France in 1934 and directed by Julien Duvivier, and a hand-drawn lithographic poster promoting the film, are part of the exhibition too.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

What’s on the menu; meals or sexy attire?

Cancer survivor story should be an inspiration

‘E

xcellent customer service doesn’t have a cup size.” So said the executive director of the Human Rights Legal Support Centre last week on International Women’s Day, and I couldn’t agree more. The Ontario Human Rights Commission is calling for an end to sexualized dress codes that discriminate against female employees. The commission is taking on some restaurants and bars that require their female staff to dress in high heels, tight dresses, lowcut tops and short skirts. The commission maintains that this dress code requirement may make employees more vulnerable to sexual harassment, contribute to discriminatory work environments and exclude people based on sex, gender identity or expression and creed. Most of us have eaten at such restaurants where the female staff, often waitresses or hostesses, can be dressed in such a provocative way it can make female customers embarrassed and male customers uncomfortable, too. I’ve eaten meals at chain restaurants in both Richmond Hill and Newmarket where either my husband or my daughter’s boyfriend were ill at ease due to the cleavage and very short skirts on display. Many times I’ve shared a meal at such establishments with female friends and it became a topic of hushed conversation, not wanting to upset servers. I don’t think such hushed discussion bodes well for a restaurant, if customers talk about the way a server is dressed instead of how delicious the food is. My son also worked in the kitchen of one such establishment that required female staff to dress provocatively. Not only was he sometimes distracted in his work, but he felt uncomfortable when encountering the waitresses in staff hallways — and even sorry for them.

Marney Beck After all, he has a sister, and would probably be embarrassed if she had obtained a job in the same restaurant and been forced to dress in a revealing way. And as a parent, I would be more than uncomfortable if my daughter were forced to wear sexy clothes to work; I would be furious. “Employers must make sure their dress codes don’t reinforce sexist stereotypes,” said Chief Commissioner Renu Mandhane of the Ontario Human Rights Commission. “They send the message that an employee’s worth is tied to how they look. That’s not right, and it could violate the Ontario Human Rights Code.” Last week, the commission publicized its plea to workers that if they felt their workplace’s dress code or uniform discriminated against them, they should use their company’s internal complaints process, or file a formal human rights tribunal complaint. (online go to sjto.gov.on.ca/hrto/ contact/) If there are any waitresses or restaurant staff who would like to express their opinions on wearing sexualized clothing — our reporters would like to hear from them. Or from managers explaining why their dress code is important to the image they are trying to project to customers. It’s fair game to ask restaurant staff to wear green on St. Patrick’s Day or a special T-shirt to promote a company awareness or charitable campaign, but quite another to insist on a uniform that exposes staff as sex objects.

Re. Newmarket man receives Facing Cancer Together Co-Survivor Award, News, March 10 What a wonderful, heartwarming story. In a world where young people often seem to only want “things” and think merely of themselves, it’s a welcome change to see the selflessness of these two young people. Mariarosa was willing to let Christian go so that he would not be tied to a seriously ill woman and Christian decided life with her was worth the sacrifice. Having gone through a cancer journey with a loved family member, I can appreciate what this young couple has gone through and will continue to go through because once you’re experienced cancer, life is never the same. This story should be an inspiration to all of our children and, I dare say, to many of us parents and grandparents. Such a blessing that she is now cancer free (as my loved one is). May her good health and their love continue so that they can celebrate not just their second anniversary next year but their 12th, 22nd, 32nd, 42nd, 52nd and so on until God calls them home.

GET CONNECTED HAVE YOUR SAY Send your letter to the editor to pfuthey@yrmg.com

Stop nonsense, don’t drink and drive Twenty-six years ago, in King City, I lost a very good friend because of a drunk driver. I read in the news recently that York Regional Police arrested 10 drunk drivers in one weekend alone. You have to be living under a rock not to hear the news with those three Neville-Lake children and their grandfather killed by yet another drunk driver as the court proceedings are going on. What is it going to take for people to stop this absolute nonsense? Honestly. Take a cab — for what it will cost, even at $200 at a maximum — is that not worth it? I still don’t think a day has gone by in the past 26 years where I haven’t thought of my friend. He never got married, never had a family of his own. There is so much more he never got to do. I won’t even mention the fallout for his family after the drunk driver got off on a technicality. My heart still breaks and always will. Please stop the nonsense. Don’t think twice — think once. Don’t drink and drive.

Wendel, meet Wendel! Five-year-old Toronto resident Wendel McCallister met the former Leafs great in Vaughan Saturday.

Maple Leafs legend Clark in Vaughan By Simon Martin

smartin@yrmg.com

If you ever had any doubt if the Toronto Maple Leafs still had an army of loyal fans after the last decade of futility, all you had to do was go to the Vaughan Mills Centre Saturday. Leafs fans of all generations lined up to get former blue and white great Wendel Clark’s autograph at Carter’s Oshkosh. The happiest guy in the mall was five-year-old Toronto resident Wendel McCallister. He smiled uncontrollably from ear-to-ear and did a happy dance when he stepped up to meet his namesake. “It was awesome,” he said of his 30-second encounter. The hockey player Wendel signed the back of the fiveyear-old’s jersey, which had No. 17 and the name Wendel emblazoned on the back. Kevin McCallister, Wendel’s dad, said old number

17 was his favourite player growing up and that’s part of the reason he chose the name for his son. “He was all heart and drive on the ice. That’s how I want to teach him to be,” he said. The McCallisters weren’t the only super fans waiting in line to rub shoulders with the Leafs legend. Kevin Hanna drove all the way from Kitchener with his children and brother to get a chance to meet Wendel. “We’re here expressly for Wendel,” he said. “He played with such heart.” Hanna remembers when the Leafs traded their captain to the Quebec Nordiques for Mats Sundin and said it was sad day. As for the current last place Leafs, Hanna said there is hope around the corner. “We got some players knocking on the door,” he said. But do any of them play with the heart of Wendel Clark? “A few,” he laughed.

Amarjit Mahant wasn’t old enough to remember Clark’s days with the Maple Leafs, but the North York resident said his cousins would always talk about him when he was young. That’s why he decided to come collect a signature from Clark. “I’m a diehard leaf fan,” Mahant said. If Mahant was classified as a diehard Leaf fan, Brampton youngster Dylan Drover would be, too. He stood in line with a Leaf collector’s book full of former greats. “I’m here because Wendel is one of the legends.” As for the current last place Leafs, Dylan took a glass-half-full approach. “We have a good coach,” he deadpanned. The event was a photo opportunity only.

Vaughan councillor Alan Shefman, who represents Thornhill, and Richmond Hill councillor Godwin Chan, who represents the area of Hwy. 7 and Yonge Street where an eventual subway station terminal would be located,

are speaking out after Toronto Mayor John Tory and Toronto Transit Commission chairman and councillor Josh Colle threw cold water on the idea of a link to Richmond Hill in the near future. Tory was reported as saying about the extension: “We just can’t do it. How irresponsible would it be to have the trains, when they get to Finch, be so full, no one can get on?” And Colle said: “We’re nowhere near being in the position to extend Yonge north. It’s just not feasible right now.” Chan and Shefman, along with Markham councillor Valerie Burke, have formed the Yonge Street North Group to lobby federal and provincial ministers as well as Metrolinx to get the 7.4-km extension built. So far they’ve helped secure $10 million for studies and consultations and had the extension approved by the province for preliminary engineering. They’ve also secured

support from Markham, Richmond Hill and Vaughan councils to move the project forward and have met with provincial transportation and finance ministers. Shefman said, “the people of the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) should not be dependent on Toronto for rapid transit planning or decisions in our region. Just consider how far along that approach has got us today.” He added that, “the problem with rapid transit planning is that it is not regionally based. Transit users could care less about municipal borders. All they want to do is get to their destination as quickly, as efficiently and as cheaply as possible.” Shefman points out that Yonge Street has been an active project managed by VivaNext since 2008 and since the establishment of Metrolinx, it has been a priority project. He also says that

in a recent Metrolinx report it was recommended to move the project to the preliminary design and engineering stage. He said it is only waiting for provincial government funding. Chan said the “bashing of 905 by the 416 is counterproductive.” He also said “Metrolinx, as the provincial agency with a mandate to address public transportation issues in the GTHA ought to engage all parties, ie., York Region Transportation Corporation, TTC, York Region and Toronto to have mature adult-like discussions on collaborative efforts to alleviate Yonge subway capacity issues without hindering the northern extension that is already shovel-ready and shovel-worthy.” Plans for the extension to Richmond Hill Centre at Hwy. 7 would see two new stations built in Toronto, with four built in York Region.

NEWS

By Adam Martin-Robbins

The city is planning on taking a new approach to charging for storm water run-off – and it’s expected to most property owners will wind up saving money. But industrial or commercial operations with large properties — such as Canada’s Wonderland and Vaughan Mills mall — will take a big hit. City staff have recommended Vaughan follow the lead of other Ontario municipalities and implement a direct storm water charge calculated using a formula based on typical runoff for different property types — single-family detached homes, townhouses and condominiums as well as industrial, commercial and institutional operations. Currently, the city charges property owners in two ways to cover the cost of operating, maintaining and repairing Vaughan’s storm water infrastructure. For those with a water meter, a fraction of the wastewater rate is for storm water. In the case of homeowners, that cost is about $0.21 per cubic metre. A portion of the property tax bill also goes toward storm water infrastructure. The municipality estimates the average homeowner pays about $100 annually in storm water costs under the current system. City staff project that under the proposed new system, people living in a single, detached family home would pay about $47 for storm water while those living in townhouses would pay about $29. Those living in while highdensity housing (condomini-

For example, an industrial operation on a one-acre property currently paying $1,458 would see that drop to $44. But businesses or organizations with properties larger than 10 acres would pay close to $18,000. Government agencies, schools, places of worship and non-profit organizations would be exempt from the charge. Under the current system, the city only collects storm water charges from 80,000 properties that have water meters. Under the new system, 100,000 properties would pay the charge. City staff said at a finance committee meeting Monday the new system is more transparent about how much is being collected for storm water and spreads the costs across all property owners more equitably. “If the storm water charge

– City of Vaughan staff report is approved, we’ll be building resiliency into our system with a comprehensive storm water program designed to protect property and the environment,” said Jennifer Rose, Vaughan’s director of environmental services. “It’s a separate funding model, has a separate charge on the water bill and it will be user-fee based, based on typical run-off by property type ensuring that all properties are responsible for storm water services.” The new system would also allow the municipality to collect more money to help pay for aging infrastructure, she said. “We have an annual depreciation of about $8 million, but we only contributed $900,000 to the reserve (fund) last year,” Rose said. According to Rose, the city consulted with some of Vaughan’s large industrial and commercial property owners and they were OK with paying a dramatically higher rate for storm water. Should council approve the new system, it will be implemented in 2017.

food, Syrian music and an atmosphere that was just like home. “We started working on this a few weeks ago. We partnered with COSTI Immigrant Services on it,” Julie said. “I share an emotion with those refugees because my mother is away, in Damascus,” said Neo, a Syrian immigrant who came to Canada in 2010. “They’ll all be celebrating their first Mother’s Day without their mothers. We thought it would be very touching if we did it together,” he said. Neo said the initiative by Canada to bring 25,000 Syrian refugees here by the end of February, is “amazing.” “It changed my perspective of the country (Canada) and improved it in a very positive way,”

he said. “It’s the home I signed up for, the place I signed up for. “People are very nice, very sincere,” said Neo, who lives in Richmond Hill. One of the refugees who arrived from Lebanon two months ago is Khaled Lakazani, now living in Scarborough with his wife and four children. “My wife and I go to ESL (English as a second language course) and my children go to school,” he said. “Canada is very beautiful and people are very nice,” said Lakazani. He said he is trying to forget the hard times he had in Syria before moving to Lebanon three years ago and then relocating to Canada. “I can’t go back to Syria, there’s nothing to go back to. Canada is a new country and I have a new life here,” he said.

Finding a trustworthy and experienced real estate agent can help make the process of buying a home much less stressful.

effort. Those in the market for an agent to help navigate the home buying process should consider the following tips. FIND A BUYER’S AGENT. Real estate agents are often affiliated with sellers instead of buyer’s. This means their primary goal is to help the seller and not the buyer. When shopping around for a real estate agent, ask companies about their buyer’s agents. Buyers should always have someone with their interests in mind, and not the interests of the sellers. FIND SOMEONE WITH A TRACK RECORD. Real estate can be an exciting and financially rewarding industry in which to work. As a result, lots of people want to be real estate agents, even though few succeed and last a long time. When interviewing real estate agents, inquire about their history in the business. A more experienced agent will make things far less stressful and easier, and a long career indicates they are good at what they do. A real estate agent with a long history in the business will likely be a full-time agent as well. Prospective buyers should look for a full-time agent, which is not as common as some buyers might think. Many agents work part-time, and buyers could receive less attention as a result.

How to Find the

RIGHT REAL ESTATE AGENT

DON’T PLACE TOO MUCH EMPHASIS ON AGENCY SIZE. Real estate agencies come in all shapes and sizes. When it comes to ability, the size of the agency should not factor in. A smaller independent agency can be just as qualified and reliable as one of the major franchise agencies. Buyers who find someone they trust should go with that person, regardless of how big or small their agency is.

One way to make the process a lot less anxiety-ridden is to work with a real estate agent you can trust. Those who have previously purchased a home might already have a strong relationship with a real estate agent. But for those moving out of their current location or buying for the first time, finding the right real estate agent requires some

resources. Buyers looking in “Town X” who have friends or family already living there should consult those friends or family and ask for any agent referrals. Those relocating because of work should ask their company to refer an agent. Chances are companies have relocated employees in the past and might have a strong relationship with an agency in town.

Buying a home is often a difficult thing to do. The stress of making such a big financial commitment is a struggle for many home buyers, whether they have purchased a home GET A REFERRAL. in the past or are doing so for the first time. Friends and family members who have been through the buying process before might be great

OPINION

Transit: if it’s built, will they come?

f you build it, will they come? Taking a look at the York Region Transportation Master Plan (TMP) stretching out to 2041, that seems to be the idea. By then, York Region will have about 1.8 million people, up from about 1.1 million today; the number of jobs in the region will have jumped from 565,000 to approximately 900,000 according to projections. The big question, according to the TMP, is whether York will see a big increase in the number of people who use public transit. Currently, just four per cent of trips within York Region are made using public transit. Contrast that number with these numbers: 81 per cent of a.m. peak work trips are made by car; 96 per cent of trips of less than five kilometres are made by car. So, how do you get more people out of their cars and on to buses helping to free up some of the gridlock on York Region roads?

Tim Kelly The key way, according to the TMP, is to build a world-class transit system. We’re seeing some of that work happening right now with the development of the Viva Rapidway system along Hwy. 7 in south York Region as well as along Steeles Avenue, up Yonge Street, along Major Mackenzie Drive, and across Davis Drive in Newmarket. It won’t be finished for a number of years but when done could have a major impact on how many choose to ride the bus. Such a system creates a “buses-only” lane that keeps transit moving smoothly and, as the population increases,

You’re on track, but are you headed the right way? Maybe you’re just starting to invest. Or you might have a mutual fund portfolio. Wherever you are, I can help create the right combination of mutual funds to provide potential growth and greater stability.

will move people swiftly through the most congested corridors. If users can be guaranteed good service, the idea is that more will take it, thus freeing up more lanes on the road and reducing traffic gridlock. The hope is that, in addition to the Vaughan subway link coming online in 2017, there will also be a subway link to Richmond Hill by 2041. Combine that with all-day, twoway, 15-minute GO Train service planned along lines running through the region over the next decade and transit service should dramatically improve. Will all the improvements draw people out of their cars? As the region grows and transit improves, taking the bus or train may prove a more attractive option down the road for some. Maple truck driver rolls with 6/49 win A 32-year-old truck driver from Maple is thinking about taking his wife on a vacation some place hot and sunny after chalking up a six-figure lottery win last month. Thileeban Vipulananthan took home $100,000 in the Feb. 13 LOTTO 6/49 draw. “I would like to invest in real estate and take my wife on a vacation – maybe Mexico or the Dominican

Thileeban Vipulananthan Republic,” he said while at the OLG Prize Centre

at the

in Toronto to pick up his winnings. Vipulananthan bought his ticket at Clarke Husky on Yonge Street in Thornhill. He was shocked when it turned out to be a winner – and so was his wife. “I used the ticketchecker and couldn’t believe what I was seeing,” he said. “I called my wife immediately but she didn’t believe me.”

Maple netminder commits to Utica College Pioneers Gianluca Baggetta’s play in guarding the twine for the Ontario Junior Hockey League’s North York Rangers this season drew plenty of attention. Currently completing his third full season, Baggetta joined the Rangers as a 17-year-old rookie in 2013-14 and posted a 13-5-1 record in 21 games played, along with a 2.78 goals against average and .912 save percentage. He also received the most votes among Ranger players

Exhibitors and vendors from across Canada, including:

in OJHL Fan Favourite Award balloting that year. Returning in 2014-15 as the club’s starting goalie, Baggetta carried a heavy workload, posting a 22-20-0 record with his win total ranking third. His 45 games played and 2,524:49 minutes played were both tops in the league. Thus far in the postseason, Baggetta has the Rangers off to a hot start as they eliminated the Buffalo Junior Sabres in the first round of their SouthWest Conference playoffs.

Low-slung Porsche 911 good fun in the snow I was a little surprised at Porsche for encouraging a winter road test of their 911 Targa 4 GTS. I’m sure they realized I could be sliding around in a $172K vehicle, not to mention giving its exterior a shellacking with gravel and road salt. Mind you, it seemed a moot point when I agreed to do this, as winter still hadn’t arrived. And any serious dump of snow was beginning to seem unlikely. And then it happened. On the day I picked up my uber-pricey ride, reports warned of a winter storm blowing in from Texas. It contained the usual dire predictions that at one time may have panicked certain mayors into mobilizing the armed forces, not to mention triggering school bus and flight cancellations. And here I was, climbing into a low-slung sportscar. Perhaps not my wisest decision, but at least I’d have one day of dry asphalt before the flakes were expected.

So with a naturally aspirated, 430-hp flat six at my command – mated to a rapid-fire PDK transmission – I’d make the most of this brief opportunity. For those unfamiliar with the scope of the 911 lineup, it encompasses 25 models that include coupe, cabriolet and targa models, rear-drive and AWD, manual and PDK automatic, with several powertrains. They run from the “base” 911 Carrera at $102,200 to the 911 Turbo S Cabriolet at $228,800. My Targa 4 GTS starts somewhere near the middle – at $151,500, with another $21,225 in options. This includes $5,530 for the PDK seven-speed automatic, instead of the standard-equipped seven-speed manual. So I had time for a few on-ramps and a good highway run to really tap into its power, revelling in the sonorous quad exhausts as its 3.8-litre engine climbs to a 7,500 rpm redline. Performance enthusiasts continue to moan about the takeover of dual-clutch automatics – and the PDK is no exception – but these can shift in milliseconds, which is something I can’t do. And the results speak for themselves. Zero to 100

Autobahn forr All

Sales Event

km/h takes 4.7 seconds with the manual and only 4.3 with the PDK - both while in Sport Plus mode. On that note, there are three drive modes, and on dry pavement, Sport and Sport Plus are good fun. Not so much in the snow.

Slippery roads no problem for Porsche AWD system Continued from page 29

the suspension in the default ‘comfort’ setting, which is firm, but not bone jarring. Choose ‘Sport’ damping, and it will rattle your fillings. Punch the throttle and you’ll notice an almost instant response, with the PDK upshifting later to take full advantage of its 325 lb/ft of torque. And with downshift rev matching, and the sport exhaust activated, each gear change delivers a sweet chorus of rumbles and pops.

Sport Plus holds gear changes even longer, and firms up the suspension. The 911 now responds to every prod of the pedal and you can feel a directness in the steering. Porsche Stability Management (PSM), which I would soon rely on in the snow, has a higher threshold in Sport Plus, allowing some oversteer before reining in the back end. Then the skies darkened as the early flakes began to fall.

In short order, the roads became wet and slick, but my tester’s big, sticky winter tires, and Porsche’s all-wheel-drive system (PTM) were up to the task. It’s a feeling that didn’t change after a night of heavy snow. The morning routes were no picnic, but were handled nicely by the 911. Especially once the plows took away the worst of it so that ground clearance wasn’t an issue.

I’ve driven the rear-drive 911, and would never take it out in winter. It can be tail happy at best of times – which is fun in the summer – but not so much now. And even though Porsche’s AWD is rear-biased, delivering sportscar handling on dry asphalt, it also reacts seamlessly and intuitively in the slop. Not once did I get the car out of shape, mind you I wasn’t driving like a moron. And after a few kilometres, found it entertaining. So did my kids, with my son seated up front (wanting to be seen in a 911) and my 74-lb daughter tucked comfortably in the otherwise cramped rear quarters. Don’t try jamming adults back there, as you may need the “jaws of life” to extract them. If you’re wondering what’s meant by a “Targa” roof, consider it the halfway point between a fully convertible top and a sunroof. Only the roof panels are stowed behind the 911’s back seats, with the wrap-around rear window (with no C-pillars) remaining. It was just fine at keeping out the cold. Every time I review a 911, I end up looking for ways to come up with the cash. There’s no practical argument for what is essentially a two-seater sportscar with a cooler-sized trunk, but it is damned fun to drive. Even in early March.

AT A GLANCE BODY STYLE: Luxury 2+2 sports coupe DRIVE METHOD: rear-engine, all-wheel-drive ENGINE: 3.8-litre naturally-aspirated, horizontally opposed six cylinder (430 hp, 325 lb/ft of torque) with seven-speed PDK automatic with sequential shift FUEL ECONOMY: (Premium) 12.8/9.3/11.2L/100 km (city/ hwy/comb)

Volvo Cars says it believes the global automotive industry should strive towards the introduction of a standardized charging infrastructure for electric cars. To support this drive towards a global standard for electric car charging, Volvo Cars has decided to throw its weight behind the Charging Interface Initiative, a consortium of stakeholders that was founded to establish their Combined Charging System (CCS) as the standard for charging battery-powered vehicles. Volvo Cars is one of the leading makers

It will introduce a fully electric vehicle by 2019

of plug-in hybrid cars and will offer a plugin hybrid variant on every new model as it replaces its entire product portfolio in the coming years. It will introduce a fully electric vehicle by 2019, based on its modular SPA vehicle architecture. In order to cement the increasing popularity of electric vehicles and ensure that customers fully embrace the technology, Volvo says that a simple, standardized, fast and global charging infrastructure is needed. The Combined Charging System, which will offer both regular and fast charging capabilities, makes electric car ownership increasingly practical and convenient – especially in urban environments which are ideal for electric vehicles. It combines single-phase with rapid three-phase charging, using alternating current at a maximum of 43 kilowatts (kW), as well as direct-current charging at a maximum of 200 kW and the future possibility of up to 350 kW – all in a single system. The Charging Interface Initiative is currently in the process of drawing up requirements for the evolution of chargingrelated standards and certification for use by carmakers around the globe.

Volvo is calling for electric car charging stations to be standardized.

by Rob Beintema Metroland Wheels For years, some of us have wondered just how to explain an automotive naming contest there that came up with “Tiguan”, improbably cobbled together from the German animal names for “tiger” and “iguana”. Puzzling, and you could, at first, be equally mystified by the “Special Edition” designation of the 2016 Tiguan reviewed here. You see, our Tiguan tester came in grey.

Granted, a new Krypton Grey Metallic colour that was added to the paint palette for 2016. And a nice deep grey at that, with a kind of understated, business suit-style esthetic elegance. But still, umm . . . grey. Inside more grey on the cloth seats, doors and dash. The Tiguan gains a little identity with some model-exclusive trim pieces like the eight round vents doubling up on the usual four dashboard locations, their metallic surrounds creat-

ing at least some contrast with a glossy shade of, uhh . . . more grey. But “special”? Okay, I’m through poking fun because VW’s Tiguan has always managed to pull it off anyway, even with this introverted colour selection, thanks to the Euro-inspired design of this compact crossover. There’s a unique and classy flavour to this Tiguan that continues to impress, inside and out, with its clean-lined simple elegance of style and taste.

And this is a competent crossover too, with useful storage capacities and compact-style seating comfort for five that includes the versatility of a sliding 20/40/20 second row. One thing all Tiguan models have in common is the 2.0-litre TSI engine under the hood, a turbocharged motor making 200 hp and 207 lb/ft of torque. This engine is up to the task and hums up to speed nicely. Fuel economy is rated at 11.6/9.3L/100km. My real world results averaged out to

Continued on page 34

a satisfactory 9.5L/100km, albeit on premium fuel. And, actually, the Special Edition name here refers to a trim line, sort of an intermediate stage designed to give Canadians that little bit of extra content without the premium price point, a ploy other manufacturers have followed with special editions, sometimes referred to as “Canada Value Packages”, that seem to suit thrifty Canadian sensibilities while adding some of the most desired features.

The Tiguan has historically come in three trim levels, continuing this year with the Trendline ($24,990), Comfortline ($33,998), and Highline ($36,998). Those lineups have been simplified for 2016 with the base Trendline now offering only front-wheeldrive with a standard six-speed manual transmission or optional six-speed automatic with Tiptronic shifting ($1.400). This base level does, however come fairly well equipped with everything from a standard rearview camera to eight-way adjustable seats, cruise control, fog lamps and more. The Comfortline and Highline trim levels make the six-speed automatic standard along with VW’s 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system, and they build on the content levels with bigger 18-inch alloy wheels, fancier upholstery and fully-loaded equipment lists. But our Tiguan SE ($29,998), as a sort of intermediate trim level, straddles the gap between the base Trendline and the mid-level Comfortline models. The SE package sticks with the Titan Black Pakata cloth interior instead of the Comfortline’s leatherette or the Highline’s real leather seating, but it does add the six-speed auto tranny and 4MOTION along with 17-inch Fortaleza alloy rims instead of the base model’s 16-inch wheels.

AT A GLANCE BODY STYLE: Five-passenger compact crossover (CUV) DRIVE METHOD: Front engine, 4MOTOION all-wheel drive, six-speed manual transmission or six-speed Tiptronic automatic ENGINE: 2.0-litre TSI DOHC turbocharged inline four-cylinder (200 hp, 207 lb/ft of torque) FUEL ECONOMY: 11.6/9.3L/100km (city/hwy) (Premium recommended) Cargo: 700 litres, 1,600 litres with second row folded flat PRICE: $29,998. As tested $30,993 incl Nav ($995) before plus $1,760 freight, PDI and fees. WEBSITE: www.vw.ca

The Tiguan CUV comes with a standard six-speed manual transmission or, (shown) with a handsome six-speed automatic shifter with Tiptronic.

For the 2016 model year, the Tiguan Special Edition also adds a USB audio input and a Composition Colour five-inch touchscreen radio/CD audio system with SD card slot. Other SE features that build beyond the basic Trendline content a few of which are: auto-dimming interior rearview mirror, Automatic headlights with coming and leaving, Climatronic dual-zone electronic climate control and rain-sensing wipers. Of course, just because the SE is an intermediate trim level doesn’t mean it can’t be optioned up and, as tested here, our Tiguan SE adds a Navigation Package ($995). The other main option with this trim level is a Panoramic Power Sunroof ($1,400), not added in this case. The current first generation Tiguan will carry on in Canada through this year and the next. Sales have climbed even without significant changes as all crossovers ride the wave of the segment’s increasing popularity. But a longer, lower, wider second generation Tiguan will debut in European showrooms this spring, with a new North American version stretched even further (+110mm longer) coming to Canada late the following year as a 2018 model, with a potential offering of three-row, seven-passenger choices as well. Stay tuned.

Giuseppe Strazzeri a true community leader BY BREA BARTHOLET

bbartholet@yrmg.com

A

community without a leader is just a random group. For some within Bradford West Gwillimbury, Giuseppe Strazzeri, more commonly known as “G”, was that kind of leader. It didn’t matter where he was or what he was doing, you could always find the friendly mortgage agent with a smile on his face. And that’s how many people will remember him, after his sudden passing on the morning of March 2, sending a wave of grief throughout BWG. A resident of Bradford for more than 14 years, Strazzeri quickly become involved in multiple groups and fundraisers. If you’re familiar with the Bradford Social Networking Association on Facebook, then it’s likely you had become familiar with Strazzeri’s upbeat demeanour and ongoing drive to connect local residents and businesses alike. From Tequila Friday’s at Don Cherry’s Sports Bar & Grill to the annual BSNA Baseball Tournament held every September, Strazzeri left a truly positive imprint on BWG. “This is a man who the town should never forget,” Carlos Costa wrote on a Facebook post. Costa is one of many close

Lstories ife

friends Strazzeri had made while working – and playing – within BWG. “A man full of life. He will be greatly missed by the town and many friends,” wrote another resident. Born in Sicily, Italy, Strazzeri moved to Canada in 1966 with his parents at the age of four. He moved around many times throughout his childhood, meeting many amazing people along the way.

‘It’s a proud moment when you help someone achieve their goals and dreams, especially when they thought it could never be done.’ But when he arrived in Bradford, he knew it was something special. During his first five years, he sat back and watched the flow of the community, eventually jumping on the chance to open a storefront business. In order to learn what BWG was all about, Strazzeri took the time to attend town meetings and begin building a large net-

work of clients, colleagues and friends. Eventually, he became involved with the Bradford Board of Trade, where he held many positions including executive director, vice-president of membership and vice-president of community relations and government affairs. In a profile written for the BBT, Strazzeri expressed his thoughts regarding linking people within the community. “It’s a proud moment when you help someone achieve their goals and dreams, especially when they thought it could never be done.” Strazzeri certainly helped many within BWG achieve their dreams. As days and weeks go by, now without the bright light of Strazzeri, friends continue to remember him by supporting one another, reminiscing about the times they spent with him and the kind of impact he made on BWG. “He changed my life and, in a way, I believe he saved it,” said Nicole Kim, who worked closely with Strazzeri on a number of projects through the BSNA. “I truly would not be the outgoing person I am today if he did not believe in me. He was my best friend, who never judged anyone. I will miss him.”

Celebrate a life well lived!

“Adored by children, universally respected and an inspiration to her peers, Mrs. McCluskey was a tireless volunteer, quick to deflect the praise heaped on her.”

Giuseppe Strazzeri
