Nearly a year to the day after their three children and their grandfather were killed in a horrific drunk-driving accident in Vaughan, the Neville-Lake family’s multi-million dollar lawsuit against the family of the man at the wheel has been revealed.

King Township resident Marco Muzzo was convicted and jailed for 10 years last March for the Sept. 27, 2015, crash that killed Daniel, 9, Harrison, 5, and Milly NevilleLake, 2, along with their 65-yearold grandfather Gary Neville. Also badly injured in the crash were the grandmother of the children, Neriza Neville, and their great-grand-

mother Josefina Frias. Now, court records reveal the Neville-Lake family is suing Muzzo and his family’s wealthy drywall/ development business for $22.5 million in compensation. The suit was filed by Neriza Neville as well as Edward Lake and Jennifer Neville-Lake, parents of the children, in addition to their

uncle Jonathan Neville and aunt Josephine Neville. “The plaintiffs state that the defendant, Marco Muzzo, has behaved with high-handedness and with disdain for the rights of the plaintiffs,” says a statement of claim. “The plaintiffs further state See MUZZO, page 18.

Do gender-based words affect our behaviour?

By Kim Zarzour

kzarzour@yrmg.com

t used to be so simple, back in the days of Dick and Jane primary school readers. We learned grammar by memorizing basic rules. Dick was a ‘he’, Jane was a ‘she’, Spot was a dog and together they were … well, they. Turns out, it wasn’t so simple after all. Those clear-cut rules didn’t fit everyone and today those who don’t fit are speaking out, sparking what could be a linguistic revolution. The two-gender, binary world of male and female is shifting. We now have gender-neutral driver’s licences, gender-free washrooms, Toby’s Law enshrining transgender people’s rights in Ontario and Bill C-16 working to do the same across Canada. And increasingly, people are adopting a cornucopia of alternative pronouns to the traditional he and she. “Gender is not black and white, but language is,” explained Chris Talbot, a female-to male transgender youth from Newmarket. Talbot, 18, prefers to be called he. He spoke with his guidance office in Grade 10 and soon his entire high school had switched references to he. Today, Talbot is studying at Georgian College in Orillia, making use of gender-free washrooms on campus, readily accepted by his male roommates in his dorm. “People have been amazing about it, really. I’ve never had a bad experience, no bullying, no judging,” he said. “Maybe it’s because [trans issues] are all over social media, but it has been easier than I thought.” Switching pronouns isn’t smooth for everyone, especially for those who don’t identify as male or female. At 16, Beatrice Vandikas stumbled upon new pronouns being used by an online blogger: fae and faer.

‘THAT’S PERFECT, THAT’S ME’ “I’d been using they and them not realizing there was anything else. I was elated. I thought, Oh my gosh, that’s perfect! That’s me!”

GENDER IDENTITY A Metroland Special Report

Vandikas had been dating a trans man at the time, dealing with “nasty rumours” in a smalltown community, and did not start using those pronouns right away. Now Vandikas is more comfortable using fae (for she/he) and faer (for her/his/him) — but also less upset when people don’t. Language is constantly evolving, Vandikas said. “It shouldn’t be that difficult, but changes like that are really hard for people, especially when they’re older.” Vandikas’ parents, for example, haven’t yet fully embraced the concept. Faer mother once asked faer to help her understand how fae would like her to talk about faer. Fae was encouraged, but faer mother’s use of the pronouns didn’t last — maybe, fae said, because it was such a foreign concept to the older generation, “so I just said to myself, she’s my mom, I’ll deal with it.” Reading that sentence may have been challenging for even the most open-minded readers, but Vandikas, and others who hope the English language evolves, said it’s worth the trouble. Respecting others is more important than being grammatically correct. Words hold power, Vandikas noted, especially when they feel wrong and especially when you have an identity disorder and rely on that perfect pronoun to understand who you are and find a sense of community. “When people say gender pronouns are too confusing, what they are really saying is they don’t want to take the time to question their assumptions about gender,” said York University professor Sheila Cavanagh. Gender is more complicated and nuanced than simple male and female, she said. “The importance of language, and gender pro-

Talbot is studying at Georgian College in Orillia, making use of gender-free washrooms on campus. noun usage, should not be underestimated.” Increasingly, professors at York and other North American postsecondary schools ask students to indicate their preferred gender pronoun when they introduce themselves. Some go further, allowing students to register their pronouns in the university computer systems; professors are urged to include their pronouns in email signatures. Alicia Lapointe, PhD candidate at the University of Western Ontario faculty of education, suggested it may be easier for youth, who tend to view gender and sexuality differently. “They’re more fluid and open about it. By high school or postsecondary, it’s too late to unlearn any transphobia or homophobia. Elementary students, in particular, are often bullied because of gender expression.”

Lapointe uses nametags that say “please use … pronouns,” and introduces herself with: “I’m Alicia and I use she, her, hers pronouns”. “It’s a way to get people to see that you shouldn’t assume,” she said. “I don’t think we lose anything by acknowledging our wide diversity, or celebrating it. Our society is only better if we celebrate everyone for who they are.” “Maybe it’s just words, maybe it’s one small thing, but it’s acknowledgement that the world is a lot different from what we imagined it to be,” said Jen Gilbert, associate professor at York University’s faculty of education. “We’re always inventing new ways to describe the world. Who knows what words we’ll invent to describe ourselves in the future? Words describe the world and invent the world. And sometimes, we need to invent the world before it exists.”

Remember baby Storm? The Toronto baby took the world by storm in 2011 when her parents decided not to reveal her gender to the world for her first years of life. Parents Kathy Witterick and David Stock wanted to let Storm decide what gender to identify with and, five years later, she is a she. The couple also made a conscious choice to keep their kids out of public school, to avoid, in part, the school system’s segregation of sexes. What happens when we erase gender divisions? Does going gender-free impact our behaviour? The research is unclear. Lynn Liben, a psychologist at Penn State, studied preschool classes to look at the effects of gender-coded language. She found when teachers lined children up by gender and emphasized gender in speech, (“Good morning, boys and girls”), students showed an increase in genderstereotyped attitudes toward each other and their choice of toys. On the other hand, researchers Kumiko Fukumura (University of Strathclyde, Scotland), Jukka Hyönä and Merete Scholfield (University of Turku, Finland), found no correlation between the pronoun system we use and our gender thinking. In the Finnish language, genders are not differentiated; “hän” refers equally to both females and males, and yet Finns do not think about the gender of people any differently than speakers of English, the researchers report. How to be gender sensitive • If you are uncertain about the gender identity of another person and have to refer to them in the third person, use they or them. • It is OK to politely ask which gender pronoun a person prefers. • If you work in an office that has intake forms, include X or Other (if you must collect information about gender — but consider that you may not actually need it). • Make sure there are gender-neutral bathroom options in your place of work. - Sheila Cavanagh, professor, York University

Police say early morning robberies in Markham, Vaughan may be linked Four men are sought in connection with two convenience story robberies that took place early Monday morning. The first incident took place at 1:30 a.m. in the area of Steeles Avenue East and Warden Avenue in Markham. Four suspects, one armed with a handgun, entered the store and demanded cash. The employee didn’t immediately comply and was assaulted. The suspects took some cash and fled on foot. The employee was treated for minor injuries. The second incident took place at 2:40 a.m. in the area of Steeles Avenue West and

Bathurst Street in Vaughan. Four suspects, one armed with a sharp, knife-like object, took cash and lottery tickets and were seen getting into an older-model vehicle turning onto Steeles. The suspects’ descriptions in both robberies were similar and York Regional Police believe the incidents are linked. The suspects are all described as black men ages 20 to 30 years old who were wearing dark clothing and face masks. One suspect has a muscular build and was wearing dark gloves and carrying a sharp weapon – possibly a knife. Another suspect was carrying a silver handgun. A third suspect is described as fivefeet, 11-inches tall. Anyone with information can contact York Police at 1-866-876-5423, or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

Respect key to society’s gender evolution

W

vaughan CITIZE

Publisher Dana Robbins

e are breaking ground and removing barriers while navigating a cultural shift that has been referred to as the new post-gender era.

In a relatively short time period, we have discovered the segregation of the sexes and the use of the pronouns he or she have been identified as obstacles as we welcome transgender people to our table of diversity.

We are in the midst of a linguistic revolution that will impact many facets of our lives before it ends Like any cultural shift, we are learning through listening and reacting by altering our language and behaviours to reflect what we’ve discovered. In short, we are in the midst of a linguistic revolution that will impact many facets of our lives before it ends. A recent Angus Reid survey had promising results. Nearly 80 per cent of those participating agree Canada should work to accommodate and protect transgender people in society. To better educate our readers, Metroland has embarked on a three-part series that starts this week and continues for the next two weeks to explore the linguistic and cultural implications of these changes. You will hear why the change is needed through the voices of those interviewed by reporter Kim Zarzour throughout her series. Studies show 47 per cent of transgender people have either considered suicide, attempted suicide or self-harmed in the course of their lives, according to Sawyer Arnold, director of Trans Inclusion, PFLAG-Durham. “By referring to them by the incorrect gender, you increase the risk and add to the emotional distress,” Arnold said. Proponents of gender-free washrooms cite safety concerns. Statistics show shockingly high levels of sexual abuse and assault against transgender people. For these people, simply choosing which washroom to use can be a daily dilemma. Changes in language and attitude will help. These changes are organic and will take time to evolve. Respect and decency should be foremost in our discussions.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Do foreign buyers pay enough taxes? After reading many articles in Canadian newspapers about the recently implemented Foreign Buyers Tax, I wonder why our Ontario premier has not addressed the same issues in her own province? If the reports from the census that we completed recently are similar to those in British Columbia, it will show that some of the most expensive real estate in York Region gives evidence that the residents must be living in poverty according to the lack of income they report on tax returns. Many of the properties are registered as being owned by students attending school here, while parents are operating businesses abroad. All the while funneling money into Canada to “support” the student and other

members of the family living here in Canada. While property taxes are paid, little to no income tax is paid, because the student is in the lowest tax tier. As residents of Canada, we all know income taxes pay for infrastructure, health care and social programs. Canadianpoliticiansneed to address these issues.

Your generosity helped 86 families Open letter to community: Thank you so much for all of your kind and generous gifts of backpacks and school supplies which you brought to our Salvation Army office this summer so we could distribute it in a fair manner to all who needed the help. We have been able to meet many of you and hear your stories of what you enjoy about helping others in need,

whether it is grandmothers with an empty nest, or retired teachers who understand the times, or kids saving up their pocket money to buy a backpack for another kid, or a youth group having a collection of items in their church, or a group of work colleagues clubbing together. We have had the privilege of helping 215 children from Richmond Hill and Vaughan, representing 86 families. We gave out backpacks, school supplies, lunch snacks and back-to-school clothing. Also, quite a number of immigrant and refugee parents have been given supplies to attend English classes. This was all because you partnered with us. We greatly appreciate your involvement. May God richly bless you this fall season, and early Thanksgiving wishes — we give thanks for all of you.

Do You Suffer From

3. Sensory nerves. These nerves relay information from your skin and muscles back to your spinal cord and brain. The information is then processed to let you feel pain and other sensations. Because nerves are essential to all you do, nerve pain and damage can seriously affect your quality of life. What Are the Symptoms of Nerve Pain and Nerve Interference? With nerve interference there can be an wide array of symptoms. Which ones you may a have depends on the location and type of nerves that are affected. Interference can can occur to nerves in your brain and spinal cord. It can also occur in the peripheral nerves, which are located throughout the rest of your body. Your nerve system is involved in everything your body does, from regulating your breathing to controlling your muscles and sensing heat and cold. Because your nerve system is so critical for your health when things go wrong with it you may experience excruciating pain and/or some very strange symptoms... There are three types of nerves in the body: 1. Autonomic nerves. These nerves control the involuntary or partially voluntary activities of your body, including heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, and temperature regulation. 2. Motor nerves. These nerves control your movements and actions by passing information from your brain and spinal cord to your muscles.

Autonomic nerve interference/pain may produce the following symptoms: • Too much sweating or too little sweating • Lightheadedness • Dry eyes and mouth • Constipation • Bladder dysfunction • Sexual dysfunction Interference to motor nerves may produce the following symptoms: • Weakness • Muscle atrophy • Twitching, also known as fasciculation • Paralysis

Sensory nerve Interference may produce the following symptoms: • Pain • Sensitivity • Numbness • Tingling or prickling • Burning • Problems with positional awareness In some instances, people with nerve interference will have symptoms that indicate interference to two, or even three, different types of nerves. For instance, you might experience weakness and burning of your legs at the same time. To further complicate matters we don’t all develop the same way and different un-expected nerves can cause similar problems. This has made it very difficult to diagnose disorders caused by nerve interference based on which nerve “should” cause what. That is, until now... In Woodbridge, you can get your nerves scanned/checked for nerve interference at Atlantis Wellness Center. Your invitation for a comprehensive consultation and examination to pinpoint the cause of your nerve interference/pain. All you have to do to receive a thorough diagnostic examination and a comprehensive easy to understand report on your state of health is call 905-264-9355. Mention this article (CODE: NER9355) and they will happily reduce their usual consultation fee of $167 to just $27. But hurry, for obvious reasons – this is a time limited offer.

2017 Jeep WrangLer sport s in seLeCt sWeepstakes Mr. Louis Rossi, founding owner of BMS Karate in Woodbridge, is all set to go off-roading after he was presented the keys today to a shiny new 2017 Jeep Wrangler Sport S as a vehicle winner in the Select Sweepstakes. The presentation took place at Seven View Chrysler in Vaughan. “We are super excited,” said Rossi. “My wife and I still can’t believe we’ve won. All we did was call our broker for an auto insurance quote for both cars and, just like that, we were entered into the Select Sweepstakes.” “When we got the call that one of our Canadian Professional Sales Association members had won a car, I was over the moon as this is the first year Cornerstone is participating in the Sweepstakes for our group insurance programs,” said Lynne Ray, Vice-President of Operations at Cornerstone Insurance Brokers in Woodbridge.

Woodbridge Art School and Gallery recently donated a portion of their proceeds from their Summer Camps to Sick Kids Hospital. It was a tribute to Jordana Fiorini, a young 10 year old girl who passed away from Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), a type of brain tumor. Woodbridge Art School wanted to join the group of caring people wanting to find a cure for DIPG - living to honour Jordana with light, love & a desire to making this world better place! Students in their Art Adventure camp, painted work inspired by Jordana’s love for both the magic of “Rainbows & Unicorns”. Deputy Mayor Di Biase loses bid to quash ethics report, pay suspension BY ADAM MARTIN-ROBBINS

amartinrobbins@yrmg.com

Di Biase

Vaughan Deputy Mayor Michael Di Biase failed in his bid to have a court quash a scathing report by the city’s ethics czar and overturn the penalty imposed by his council colleagues. In a ruling released Monday, a panel of three divisional court judges rejected arguments made by Di Biase’s lawyer, Morris Manning, during a judicial review hearing in May. Manning aimed to have the court squelch the findings of a code of conduct investigation by Integrity Commissioner Suzanne Craig and reverse a 90-day

pay suspension, amounting to about $21,000, imposed by council based on her findings in April 2015. “Because I am satisfied that there is no merit in any of the applicant’s (Di Biase’s) submissions, I reject the applicant’s contention that the City of Vaughan erred in law in accepting the Integrity Commissioner’s final report,” Justice Frank Marrocco wrote on behalf of the panel in a 34-page decision. Di Biase, a veteran councillor and former mayor, said Tuesday he’s “surprised” by the ruling, but declined to comment further until he’s spoken to Manning. “I want to read it, I want to understand it and I haven’t had a chance to do that yet,” he said.

Craig, meanwhile, said she’s “grateful for and humbled by” the court’s decision. “This is a clear victory for those who had the courage to believe in the process and believe that doing the right thing even at a personal cost, is an important tool for the public to hold elected officials accountable,” she wrote in an email. During the two-day judicial review, Manning argued Di Biase was denied “procedural fairness” and was unable to adequately defend himself against the allegations made against him, including that he bullied and intimidated city staff. Manning’s argument centred, in part, on Craig’s refusal to disclose the names of 32 people she interviewed during a four-month probe, as well as the fact she didn’t hand over any of the documents given to her by some of those people. Craig reported she protected the identities of the witnesses because many of them feared reprisals. The court ruled under the city’s code of conduct complaint protocol, which lays out the rules the integrity commissioner must follow, she isn’t required to identify the witnesses she interviewed nor is she required to provide documents obtained from them.

launched in 2014 “I am satisfied that the Integrity Commissioner exercised her discretion in a manner that properly balanced the applicant’s right to meaningfully respond to allegations in the complaint and the need to protect city staff who had cooperated in her investigation,” Marrocco wrote. Craig launched an investigation in December 2014 following a complaint by Richard Lorello, a city hall watcher and Di Biase’s longtime political rival. The court heard Craig analyzed Lorello’s complaint and determined it consisted of four separate items. She chose not to investigate one item because it related to a matter beyond the six-month time limit set out in the Municipal Act. She determined another item was beyond her jurisdiction because it was a criminal matter. That matter was an allegation Maystar General Contractors, a Vaughan-based construction firm, worked on Di Biase’s family cottage in exchange for the councillor using his influence to advance the company’s business interests with the municipality. Craig told Lorello, as she’s required to do, it was a matter for the police to investigate. (A police probe was launched shortly after and an OPP spokesman confirmed Tuesday the investigation is ongoing.) Craig decided two other items in Lorello’s complaint were within her jurisdiction to investigate. They involved allegations Di Biase interfered in various tendering pro-

So much for trying to make it into the new fall television line up. York Region councillors are considering live video streaming and archiving their council and committee of the whole meetings. Don’t hold your breath waiting though, as a decision is still at least three months away as the region investigates how best to broadcast the meetings and the cost, which could be in the neighbourhood of $125,000. While some councillors argued televising meetings would make the region more accessible to the public, no one is pretending

15

they would draw in high ratings. For example, Aurora averages fewer than 10 viewers for its meetings, while Georgina typically draws in five viewers, Newmarket attracts 13 on average, Markham pulls in an average of 14 and Richmond Hill gets 20 on average. Someone really should look into what Whitchurch-Stouffville is doing right because it drew 170 viewers on its first televised meeting. The region already audio streams its council meetings over the internet and will immediately begin audio streaming its committee of the whole meetings. It will also make presentations available to the public online so they can follow along.

City spent $130,000 on 2 lawyers for hearing cesses, in contravention of Vaughan’s procurement rules, for projects Maystar bid on as well as allegations he exerted inappropriate pressure on staff in order to secure business for Maystar. Craig didn’t investigate Maystar and there’s nothing in her reports to indicate the company did anything wrong. Manning argued since Craig determined a portion of Lorello’s complaint was a criminal matter related to Maystar and the two items she investigated involved the same firm, she ought to have suspended her probe and handed the entire matter over to the police. The judges spent a fair bit of time during the hearing dealing with that argument, but ultimately rejected it.

“This was an important decision not only for me and the City of Vaughan, but for all of the accountability officers in Ontario at the municipal level,” Craig said. “The confidentiality provisions of the Municipal Act were prescribed for a reason and with this decision, the court confirmed this very vital principle of confidentiality upon which the effectiveness of accountability offices operate.” The city spent $134,683 on lawyers for the hearing, one for the municipality and one for the integrity commissioner. Di Biase said he doesn’t feel obligated to reimburse the city. “The decision was made that we would each pay our own costs and it was accepted by all the lawyers present on May 17 when the judicial review took place, so I’ll abide by that,” he said. “I have my own costs to deal with and so I’ll just abide by that.”

that the defendant, Marco Muzzo, was conscious of the probable consequences of his carelessness and was indifferent or worse, to the danger of injury or death to the occupants of the Neville-Lake vehicle.” None of the allegations has been proven in court. The family says their “lives have been, remains and will be significantly impaired” and that the loss of their family members has affected their ability to earn a livelihood and means they will continue to require treat-

ment, a statement of claim says. Steven Stieber, lawyer for Muzzo and the family business Marel Contractors, told the Star a statement of defence will be filed soon “accepting responsibility and not casting blame or fault on anyone else.” He said the defendants hope to resolve the matter of compensation in the near future. Muzzo pleaded guilty in February to four counts of impaired driving causing death and two counts of impaired driving causing bodily harm. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Muzzo, who was also banned from driving for 12 years, is eligible

to apply for full parole after having served one-third of his sentence — in about three years. In a hearing last February, Muzzo told the court, “I’m truly sorry… from the bottom of my heart. I stand here... with great remorse. I’ve listened to the catastrophic consequences of my actions. I’m at a loss for words and in constant search for the right way to express my sorrow. There are no actions that can ever change what happened.” It was revealed in court, that on Sept. 27, while driving back from Pearson Airport after arriving by private jet

from an event in Miami, he drove with a blood alcohol concentration nearly three times the legal limit. When he slammed into the Neville-Lake van at an intersection in Vaughan, he was going 85 km/hr despite applying his foot on the brakes 3.7 seconds before impact, according to police reports. “Because of your selfish actions I don’t have anyone left to call me mom, not one left, you killed all my babies... My life is hell on Earth, because of you,” Jennifer Neville-Lake said to Muzzo on the stand in February. — With files from TorStar, Jeremy Grimaldi and Chris Simon

by DUNCAN FLETCHER Kira Isabella is brightening Canada’s country music scene. To the stage she brings fresh, powerful lyrics, a great musical sensibility, and a deep connection with her fans. She’s feisty. She’s seasoned. And this 22-year-old, Ottawa-raised, rising star exudes a solid confidence that fuels her artistic core. And why shouldn’t she be confident? With looks and a voice that turn heads, backed by a career that includes two full-length albums – 2012’s Love Me Like That and 2014’s Caffeine & Big Dreams, tours with country heavyweights like Terri Clark and Carrie Underwood, awards and nominations including two JUNO nods, garnering Canadian Country Music Association awards for Female Artist of the Year (2013) and Rising Star (2012), and standout performances at music festivals across the country, she has every reason to radiate confidence. When you dig deeper you discover that her self-assurance is fed, not by accolades and external hype, but by a quiet, internal understanding that she’s doing exactly what she was meant to do – make and perform music. For Isabella, that realization of purpose settled in at the tender age of seven. Supported from the start by a music-loving family that included a farmgirl mom and a guitar-playing Air Force dad who shuttled her around the province to play, she would pick up the guitar and sing for whoever would listen. But playing wasn’t enough. Isabella vividly remembers a tingling feeling that came over her as a child while she watched performers at a music festival. She remembers saying to herself, “I want to be up there.”

She confides that even as an adult, being in the crowd makes her feel anxious, but being on stage – terrifying to many – is as liberating today as it seemed when she was a young girl. Isabella’s music-filled home exposed her to classic country music, including strong female singers like Patsy Cline. Later on, modern artists like Shania Twain and Sheryl Crow would also influence her. While a traditional country sound certainly infuses the Isabella experience, she notes that diverse pop acts such as Britney Spears, Avril Lavigne, Sum 41, Blink 182 and even Michelle Branch added to the mix as well. Faint echoes of their styles touch the original songs that Isabella pens. The writing bug, like the performing one, also bit her early. As a child she often transformed her poems and stories into songs that she would then perform for her family. For Isabella, writing has always been an organic experience that allows her to express herself yet doesn’t lend itself to a set formula. No rules. Even now as a well-rounded artist, she still tinkers with the method – sometimes collaborating, sometimes figuring things out on her own – and describes it as “an evolving process.” But it’s always authentically Isabella. That natural desire to write much of her own material sets her apart from other performers. But it also ensures that each song – whether traditional country laments like 2011’s Little White Church (written when she was 17), her rousing, barroom-kicker, Shake It If Ya Got It, or her latest single, the pop-infused I’m So Over Getting Over You – are all pieces of who she is, a compelling mix of country, city, tradition, modern, quiet and crazy. Though never in a negative way. She is the real deal. Isabella cites positivity as key

to her outlook and success, hoping that’s part of what you take away from her music. “We do a lot of different kinds of songs, but always with a positive message,” she says. She tackles tough issues through her bold and empowering lyrics. “Even (in) a song like Quarterback (dealing with high school humiliation) which I just had to do, there is still a positive message of hope.” The song is a cautionary tale against date rape and cyberbullying. Isabella’s uplifting authenticity has skyrocketed her career over the past decade, inspired a surging fan base, and created electrifying performances. When she steps into the spotlight as a headliner on the Flato Markham Theatre stage on Sept. 30, you can see for yourself why Kira Isabella is rocking the country world. Is she intimidated? “No,” she laughs. “This is what I’ve been working for.” Her show is bound to offer an intense and emotional ride for her enthusiastic fans who often see themselves reflected in her music. “A lot are (females) in their early-to-late 20s,” she explains. “They come with their boyfriends but I see them singing along too.” Fans in their 30s, 40s and beyond are also an increasingly large part of an audience excited to experience a

healthy dose of positivity, authenticity and energy – human qualities that never go out of style. “I just love when people come out and sing along” she concludes. “I can’t wait to see them.” The feeling is mutual. They can’t wait to see her. Because without a doubt, Kira Isabella is finally “up there.”

by PAULA CITRON Choreographer/artistic director Roberto Campanella came to Canada in 1993 from sunny Italy. ProArteDanza is arguably the finest chamber contemporary ballet company in the country. Featured at the Flato Markham Theatre on Nov. 4 are Fearful Symmetries, a world premiere by Campanella, and Glumbek’s acclaimed Diversion. Arts journalist Paula Citron sat down with Campanella to get to know the man behind the dance, and the fall program. You were born in Rome. How did you get into dance? I come from a simple family. My dad was a bus driver and my mom a housewife. I was always dancing around the house, destroying things as I went. The doors were my partners. My parents were very supportive. When I was 11, they put me in Scuola Italiana di Danza Contemporanea, one of the best dance schools in Rome. I understand that you became a successful professional dancer right from the start? At 17, I joined the school’s dance company,

Compagnia Italiana di Danza Contemporanea. When I was 21, I auditioned for Compagnia Aterballetto based in Reggio Emilia, the most famous contemporary dance company in Italy with a world-wide reputation. You co-founded ProArteDanza in 2004. How do you account for the company’s almost instantaneous success? First of all, we were able to attract great dancers and great choreographers from among our colleagues in both the ballet and contemporary dance scenes. They believed in our contemporary ballet mandate of fusing the two worlds of dance – performing modern/contemporary movement layered over a strong ballet technique. ProArteDanza is a repertory company that attracts talent. Besides your teaching and choreographic careers, you also have what you call your “parallel life”. That’s right. I have found a niche as both a movement coordinator and choreographer for film, television and video games. Since 2003, I’ve worked on series such as The Expanse and The

Strain, films that include Pompeii and Beauty and the Beast, and video games like Silent Hill and Far Cry Primal. This keeps me very busy. Let’s talk about the program ProArteDanza is performing on the fall tour. You’ve called the choreographies “the two big monsters”. Robert and I usually co-choreograph, but this time we’re each showcasing a piece. The company usually presents shorter works so having just two big pieces on the program is a new format for us. What inspired your new piece “Fearful Symmetries”? I love silent movies, especially the films of Buster Keaton. I happened to stumble on a video where someone had put Buster Keaton movies together with the John Adams music, and that’s when I realized that the speed and hectic movement of silent films is the life that I live, a life on the run. The piece is characterized by physicality, musicality and drive. It captures the rhythms of an over-busy urban lifestyle. The choreography, inspired by silent movies, is fast and stunt-ish. Robert Glumbek is retooling Diversion for

ten dancers. This insightful piece explores the diversions that take our lives off course – the different directions that hinder relationships, the diversions that lead to loss, isolation and loneliness. Robert is a master at expressing humanity through movement. His work is also incredibly physically demanding. The electronic score is by the British ambient-music trio Marconi Union. How would you define the choreographic signatures of both you and Robert? Robert is known for his intricate development of construction, and how his movement patterns evolve naturally out of the group. I’m more architectural in structure with a more classical aspect. I’m also in your face while Robert is more sophisticated and subtle. Both of us like to take dancers to the upper limit of vulnerability. Because we co-choreograph so often, this program will reveal how much of me is in Robert’s piece, while I have a lot of Robert in mine.

An Ontario Municipal Board hearing to decide the fate of a controversial condominium project in Woodbridge’s historic village is slated to take place next spring. At a pre-hearing Tuesday, it was decided there will be a week-long hearing, starting April 24 for arguments for and against a proposed seven-storey, 119-unit building at Woodbridge Avenue and Wallace Street. The property is in an area designated for heritage protection and there are two historic homes on the site. Although a hearing date was set, OMB adjudicator Jason Chee-Hing said he would “strongly encourage” the developer, Cityzen Development Group and Fernbrook Homes, the city and the Village of Woodbridge Ratepayers Association to consider taking part in a mediation process. Christopher Tanzola, lawyer for the development group, said there’s been several meetings with residents during the last couple of years and the two sides appear to be too far apart in what they want to see built. The development expectations are very disparate, he said. Denise Baker, a lawyer with WeirFoulds LLP, representing the city, said she hasn’t discussed the idea of mediation with her client. City council still has to ratify a decision made by councillors at last week’s committee of the whole meeting to reject the project, despite a planning staff recommendation to approve it. That committee vote came amidst intense pressure from area residents, who’ve been opposed to it from the outset.

Among their concerns are the levelling of the hilly site, the removal of several large trees and the plan to relocate portions of Dr. Peter McLean House (built in 1893) and Thomas Frazier Wallace House (1875) to the edge of the property. They’ve argued the building would overshadow the historic homes and add traffic to already congested roads. Residents are hopeful a technical report prepared by a heritage expert will bolster their case at the OMB. In a technical memorandum to the city, the heritage consultant recommends: • Leaving the Wallace House in its original location • Increasing the space between the new building and the heritage homes • Keeping the McLean House intact rather than removing the “tail” • Reducing the height to six storeys or pulling back the seventh storey • Taking steps to preserve the rolling topography. Maria Verna, president of the Village of Woodbridge Ratepayers Association, said last week residents are hopeful the OMB hearing will result in a development that is more in line with what they want to see on the site. “We’re looking for an application that meets the needs of the community, that is four-storeys, that has a compatible design, that takes into consideration the recommendations of the technical report,” she said. Whether or not that will happen is really difficult to predict, according to Woodbridge West Councillor Tony Carella. “I have no idea (what will happen) because the OMB is a crapshoot,” he said.

11 Critical Home Inspection Traps to be Aware of Weeks Before Listing Your Vaughan Home for Sale

Vaughan - According to industry experts, there are over 33 physical problems that will come under scrutiny during a home inspection when your home is for sale. A new report has been prepared which identifies the eleven most common of these problems, and what you should know about them before you list your home for sale. Whether you own an old home or a brand new one, there are a number of things that can fall short of requirements during a home inspection. If not identified and dealt with, any of these 11

items could cost you dearly in terms of repair. That’s why it’s critical that you read this report before you list your home. If you wait until the building inspector flags these issues for you, you will almost certainly experience costly delays in the close of your home sale or, worse, turn prospective buyers away altogether. In most cases, you can make a reasonable pre-inspection yourself if you know what you’re looking for, and knowing what you’re looking for can help you prevent little problems from growing into costly and unmanageable ones.

To help homesellers deal with this issue before their homes are listed, a free report entitled “11 Things You Need to Know to Pass Your Home Inspection” has been compiled which explains the issues involved. To hear a brief recorded message about how to order your FREE copy of this report call toll-free 1- 800-324-3520 and enter 1003. You can call any time, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. SPECIAL RETIREES' HEARING AID! A new hearing aid offer has been introduced for retirees. The hearing aid is a great value, simple to operate and brings IMPROVED hearing to thousands!

At last. The hearing aid that thousands have wanted is now available. The latest digital hearing aid technology solves the biggest challenge for hearing aid wearers–hearing well in noisy environments. Nobody will notice it because of its minute size, fitting snugly and comfortably just behind your ear. Everything works automatically. There are no controls to worry about and adjustments are easy to make–even from your smart phone. So you can get back to enjoying your relationships, rather than thinking about your hearing. Because these new hearing aids collect and digitally processes natural, 360 degree sound thousands of times per second, they have been shown to reduce

the strain that effortful-listening puts on the brain and even to improve recall from conversations in noisy listening environments. In fact, these hearing aids improve speech understanding in background noise 30% better than even the previous top-of-the-line hearing aids. Hearing professionals are celebrating the biggest advancement in 30 years of fitting hearing aids and patients credit it with providing a substantial improvement in their ability to communicate in large groups and noisy social settings. A hearing test takes less than 60 minutes, you don’t need a doctor’s referral, and there’s no cost or obligation whatsoever. Call now to try these hearing aids for yourself!

Woodbridge Fall Fair organizers are revved up about a new addition to the 169th installment of the highly anticipated event. This year’s fair — which gets rolling Saturday Oct. 8 to Monday, Oct. 10 — features the “first ever” Classics, Customs & Exotics Car Show on Sunday, Oct. 9. “It fits in well with our theme, which is Wagon Wheels and Ferris Wheels, so we thought we’d add some more wheels,” said Jamie Maynard, treasurer for the Woodbridge Agricultural Society. Gearheads are invited to enter their prized vehicles in one of three categories: classic cars and trucks (up to 1991), custom cars and trucks (up to 1991) or modern exot-

ic, muscle, tuners and trucks (2000 and newer). Cash prizes and trophies will be awarded to the top three finishers in each category. There are also specialty awards up for grabs. Best in show takes homes $1,000 plus a trophy. The show runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with award presentations slated to take place at 2:30 p.m.

10,000 visitors There’s a $30 entry fee for the car show, sponsored by Pfaff, but that also gets you two adult day passes to the fair plus a dash plaque. To enter, email woodbridgefaircarshow@hotmail. com with the owner’s name, address, phone number, make model, year, class and a photo of the car or truck. The deadline for entries is

Friday, Sept. 30. Of course, there’s a lot more happening at the fair than just the car show, including the always popular giant pumpkin contest, children’s entertainers, the 33rd annual cow milking contest and much, much more. The agricultural society is also planning a special tribute to the Livingston family who’ve always provided the cows for the milking contest, in honour of family patriarch Gerald Livingston who passed away in June, Maynard said. The fair, which attracts about 10,000 visitors each year, takes place at the Woodbridge Fairgrounds, 100 Porter Ave. off Kipling Avenue, just north of Hwy. 7. Admission costs $8 for adults and $2 for students. Children five and under are admitted for free.

You are more likely to get into a traffic accident on a regional road in York on a Friday between September and February between 5 and 6 p.m. than at any other time. That is one of the findings contained in the region’s new 2016 annual traffic safety report. Overall, the most common accidents are rear-end collisions at signalized intersections, the report

said. “Most collisions are as a result of someone’s improper driving or driving inattentively,” it said. “As has been the case in years past, the majority of high-collision intersections are situated on high-volume roads such as Hwy. 7, Rutherford Road, Major Mackenzie Drive and Yonge Street.” About 3.35 million trips are made on regional roads daily and more than six billion are made each year.

The number of collisions on the region’s 4,100 kilometres of roads dropped by 13 per cent between 2013 and 2015. There were 9,581 collisions in 2013, which decreased to 8,329 in 2014 and to 8,303 in 2015. The number of fatal collisions jumped from 14 in 2013 to 19 in 2014 before falling to 13 last year, which was a 10-year low. Three pedestrians and three cyclists were killed in traffic collisions last year. The number of collisions on

regional roads involving injuries dropped from 2,293 in 2013 to 2,194 in 2014 and to 2,101 in 2015. Between 2013 and 2015, the number of collisions involving pedestrians climbed 6 per cent to 169 last year, while the number of collisions involving cyclists dropped six per cent to 98 last year. Last year, Major Mackenzie Drive at the Hwy. 400 off-ramp in Vaughan had the single largest number of collisions on a regional

In 2013, Hwy. 7 and Weston Road, where there were 77 collisions, was the worst location. Edward Bonsu was not in the starting lineup for the Woodbridge Strikers when they took to the pitch to face the East York Predators in their Ontario Cup Boys U-13 final at The Ontario Soccer Centre in Vaughan Sunday. But he ended up playing an instrumental role for the Strikers after accounting for all of the scoring in the match that resulted in a 3-0 victory for Woodbridge.
