Professional pest control serves a critical role in society. We keep communities safe and healthy by protecting homeowners from disease-carrying pests. We protect homes and businesses from pest-inflicted damage. We safeguard our food supply. We provide critical services to hospitals and nursing homes, restaurants and hotels, schools and universities, and more. And, we do all this in a way and manner that ensures our professionalism and credibility as an industry shines through. You are the face of our industry — each and every day — in every customer interaction and impression. What you do in your own businesses reflects on our industry and what we do as an industry reflects on you. With this give and take, we want you to be prepared and at the ready to face what we at NPMA believe is a very bright future. We have a clearly defined vision of every home and business utilizing professional pest control services, and we spent much of last year building on the foundational plans set forth in our strategic plan. We’ve focused on our members by providing them with the tools and training they need to grow. We have established ourselves as an authority on public health by joining important conversations and having a seat at the table with other industry partners like the CDC, the EPA, and more. We continue to make quality consumer connections with the invaluable marketing support of the Professional Pest Management Alliance, and we proactively engage with regulators and policy makers to protect your interests and drive change where needed. Our work also extended beyond our borders and focused on international alliances. We participated in the newly-formed Global Pest Management Coalition. The charge of this initial gathering, representing nearly 30 countries, was to identify synergies between our associations and find ways to work together on issues that impact all of our organizations and industry, including food safety, working with government and world agencies like the World Health Organization, and responding to activist groups. Yes, 2017 was a busy year with significant progress being made. We welcomed more than 425 new member companies to our organization and initiated new programs and committees, including our new Resource Center, our new Health Insurance Exchange, and the NPMA Strategic Partnership Program.
Our public policy team worked to enact change and preserve our interests on regulation and legislation — both on the Hill and in local municipalities. In 2017 alone, the number of QualityPro accredited companies grew by 10 percent, bringing the total number of companies recognized for meeting the standards of professionalism to more than 500. We also continued to get our messages out to consumer audiences through the work of the Professional Pest Management Alliance. In 2017, we’ve been everywhere — in magazines, newspapers, TV news programs, and across social media. We’ve driven more than 4.5 million consumers to PestWorld.org. Working in this industry is something we can and should all be proud of and by working together, our future is brighter than ever.
Sincerely,
Dominique Stumpf Chief Executive Officer, NPMA
LETTER FROM THE CEO
Dear NPMA Members,
A LOOK AHEAD — OUR PATH FORWARD NPMA is ever expanding its education programs, enhancing member resources, and strengthening its influence in the development of balanced and proactive legislation. Together, NPMA and its members will meet the challenges and take advantage of the opportunities that lie ahead. The association looks forward to supporting the pest management industry and the critically important role it plays — protecting public health, food, and property.
After laying the groundwork at the P3 Summit in 2016, the National Pest Management Association spent 2017 executing on various initiatives to support the group’s new strategic plan and four established goals, which include:
CONSUMER CONNECTIONS A growing number of consumers are actively seeking protection of their residences and businesses with pest management professionals.
MEMBER ENGAGEMENT An increasing number of pest management companies are using NPMA benefits to improve the quality of their businesses.
PUBLIC HEALTH LEADERSHIP NPMA and pest management professionals are the trusted sources for protecting people, structures, and land from pest-related health threats.
REGULATORS AND POLICY MAKERS NPMA is increasing its influence in the development of balanced and proactive legislation and regulations.
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
What a year it’s been for NPMA — one of positive growth toward a better and brighter tomorrow. In 2017, we worked tirelessly in many different areas of the business to continue shifting the public’s understanding of our role as protectors of health, food, and property. We took steps to help grow our employees by launching the NPMA Resource Center, chockfull of training resources and tools needed to be successful both in the field and in the office. We’re very proud of this initiative and encourage you to check it out on NPMA’s website. We concluded year one of our Executive Leadership Program, comprised of ten individuals who helped to enhance NPMA and the membership experience. And, our industry relations teams worked behind-the-scenes to ensure our companies remain unaffected by overreaching regulations. These and other efforts have undoubtedly shaped the general perception of the work we do each and every day to safeguard homes, businesses, and families. As my time serving as your president comes to an end, I wanted to express my sincere gratitude to the NPMA Board of Directors, staff, and past presidents for their collective support in moving the industry forward. In just two decades, NPMA’s efforts have contributed to the substantial growth of our industry from $4B to $9B. If 2017 is any indication of what’s to come for our industry over the next 20 years, I personally can’t wait to be a part of it. I am truly excited for the future of this wonderful industry with the training, advocacy, and support provided by NPMA. So, get your sunglasses ready because this future of ours is a bright one!
J. Bryan Cooksey, Jr.
NPMA President, 2017/2018 McCall Service, Jacksonville, FL

NPMA’s Online Learning Center offers exclusive access to 23 training courses that cover everything from technical education to business development. Course offerings include new hire training, which is designed to prepare new structural pest control technicians for their careers in pest management. Courses are designed to provide an overview of integrated pest management, federal laws that govern this industry, the product label, pesticides, important pest groups, basic pest control equipment, and safety.
INDUSTRY LEADERSHIP The Executive Leadership Program was created to find passionate, committed, and engaged individuals from all parts of the country who want to enhance NPMA and the membership experience while connecting with industry leaders. Each year, a new class begins a twoyear planned curriculum that prepares them for association leadership. NPMA appoints PMPs from across the country to participate in the program, and funds participation and travel to Academy and PestWorld so that participants can be part of NPMA’s board meeting, share experiences, and take advantage of networking and learning activities.
PUBLIC POLICY Over the past year, NPMA has aggressively pursued pesticide regulatory reform legislation in the 2018 Farm Bill, defended critical pesticide registrations before the EPA and strengthened our advocacy efforts at the state level through our expanded State Policy Affairs Representative (SPAR) program. In 2017, we submitted seven formal comments to Federal Agencies and raised $40,000 for our PAC.

The ELP has had an integral part in helping me achieve my career goals. It has given me a deeper understanding of diversity, professional etiquette, and other important aspects that are often overlooked as a company grows. Attending NPMA events has been the highlight of my career; the personal relationships, leadership development, and being able to get a first-hand look in the heart of the industry can’t be experienced anywhere else. I’ve also had the opportunity to work with an industry titan as a mentor — someone who has the wisdom and experience to objectively help me achieve my goals.

The Pest Management Foundation is a charitable organization affiliated with NPMA, but is a separate entity with a unique Board of Trustees focusing on serving the industry by advancing research and education in urban/structural pest management. The Pest Management Foundation is funded entirely through donations from individuals and companies. All donations are tax deductible — both personal and corporate donations are accepted. In its inaugural year, the Pest Management Foundation Student Scholarship program received more than a dozen applications from budding entomology students. In 2017, the Foundation was proud to award student scholarships in addition to research grants. Four projects are currently being funded by the Foundation, two at the University of California, and one each at Auburn and Fordham Universities. UC Riverside Project – Evaluation of outdoor applications of insecticide baits as alternative management tactics for peridomestic nuisance cockroaches UC Davis Project – Examining two different bait stations, their placement, visitations by small mammals and birds, and their interaction with mesocarnivores to answer the question: can rodenticide toxicosis be mitigated by changes in management practices? Auburn University Project – Effects of house and landscape characteristics on the abundance and diversity of perimeter pests Fordham University Project – Rats follow their nose: using social structure and scent origins to produce new tools for urban pest management

AROUND THE GLOBE WORLD-WIDE PUBLIC HEALTH INITIATIVE From fighting mosquitoes that transmit dangerous and deadly diseases, protecting our food from cockroaches and rodents, defending businesses and homes from structure-crippling termites, to specializing in bed bug eradication — pest management professionals are defenders of public health, food, and property and a catalyst for the world’s economy.
GLOBAL PEST MANAGEMENT COALITION In April 2017, NPMA had the opportunity to facilitate and lead an open dialogue with the initial gathering of the Global Pest Management Coalition. Representing nearly 30 countries, the group met to identify synergies and ways to work together in support of issues that impact all of our organizations and the industry as a whole. During these discussions, we explored key challenges such as professionalism around the world, increasing regulatory challenges and ways in which we can further enhance and improve our image as an industry. NPMA also represented the United States with NPMA CEO Dominique Stumpf delivering the keynote address at the inaugural World Pest Day ceremonies on June 6, 2017, a global initiative hosted by the Chinese Pest Control Association.
Pest management professionals are naturally philanthropic in their efforts to protect person and property from the diseases and dangers posed by pests, and our members certainly keep busy helping causes near and dear to both their communities and their own hearts. NPMA Gives is a business recognition program designed to showcase the charitable donations, programs, and time contributed by our member companies to their communities. As part of the program, NPMA members commit to donating one percent of their annual net profit to charitable causes (through monetary donations, donated products, or services or volunteerism).
Jenkins Brothers Honored with the 2017 NPMA Gives Award Bobby, Raleigh, and Dennis Jenkins own and operate their respective branches of ABC Home & Commercial Services. Bobby operates his business out of Austin; Raleigh out of Houston; and Dennis out of Dallas. Collectively, they employ over 1,000 employees and serve tens of thousands of residents and business owners throughout Texas with a variety of services from pest control to heating and air conditioning services. All three brothers are committed to the awareness and funding of A Child’s Hope and Moss Pieratt Foundation, so much so that they were willing to ride their bikes across the country in support of these causes.
