01 TRANSPORTATION CENTER Advanced Architectural Design Studio Fall.2014 Critic: Karla Rothestein Death is the topic in this project, with more than 100 people die in New York everyday, we need to find a treatment for theit demand of energy and earth. Meanwhile, how we treat boday and how we deal with the relationship between dead and alive and be reflectedinour daily life. This in terms influence our building, or our way of life. Therefore, in this project, we not only explore the new way to treat dead, but also bring this change into architecture.

Reaseach in Memory Meomory is constructed. We transfer information such as sound, image or flavor into physical substance and store them in or brain. These substance could be called back in response to some cue. And thus how we remember. However, those substence we stored might fade, influenced or even untraceable due to the lost of cue.

Research in Site Lots of historical buildings are located around Greenwood Cemetery, such as Army Terminal, Brooklyn Industry City and Sunset Park. In late 19th century, these sites were connected by South Brooklyn Railway, which operated as public transportation facility in south brooklyn. Since it was wasted in 1950s, only some part of it was used as subway rails and station. In 2007, NYCEDC began to invested in brooklyn industry district. Sunset Park Vision Plan, which aims to renovate South Booklyn Industiral District, is one part in NYCEDC’s plan.

3

We beilieve more infrastruction will be need in this area as Sunset Park Vision Plan would bing more job opportunities. In response to this, we propose to reconstruct South Brooklyn Railway, not only to fulfill the need of transportation, but also as response to historical memory lies in this area. Meanwhile, this project could connect Greenwood Cemetery with other parts of New York, in this sense, it not only recalls urban history but also works as a response to personal memory. In additional, we need to deal with increasing land use and energy consuming of deceased. Therefore, we chose to treat corpses as raw material for bio methanogenesis. With methanogenesis, we can provide illmination or even energy in further use. In this project, we planned to set methanogenesis illuminating installations in Greenwood, where is no light in the evening, in order to offer residents a public space.

Deceased is collected in Funeral/Processing part through ferry. Within 30 days, it can be transform into bio methanogenesis. In our design, this project is a long term plan. At first, we can only offer light in our train station, but as time goes by, we can spread these light with gas pipes, along rails. In future, these light would be introduced into Greenwood, change it into a public space for public events and memorial. Besides, these light can also be inserted in blocks around Greenwood, to offer public facilities and personal memorial. Methanogenesis Lights as Playing Facility

02 HOTEL College work Spring 2010 East Lake attracts millions people in Wuhan, and a hotel sites right beside this natural scene should just like this natural scene, free to access, open to every one, should return the public space to every visitor but the guests only. That is why in this project I merely lift guestrooms to form an enclosed part and leave other associate rooms in site. Site of this project is located right beside East Lake-the most famous natural view of Wuhan-and Luojia Hill. This special location makes me cautious, as you have to take the environment into consideration and make sure the new hotel would make positive response to existing environment

For some travelers, bus station gives them the first impression of a city. Therefore, it woeks as the entrance of a city. How to introduce Wuhan in this architecture becomes the key sense in this design. For me, a slice of city, an indoor street is what I try to represent.

College work Summer.2008

Arising out of the conglomeration of three cities, Wuchang, Hankou and Hanyang, Wuhan is known as “The nine provinces’ leading throughfare“; it is a major transportation hub, with dozens of railways, roads and expressways passing through the city. With such advanced transportation system, Wuhan has several long distance bus station. An in this new one, we need to present his city to numerous tourists.

In this project, we change waiting room in bus station into an indoor street, where various activities could be taken place. Other service space, such as office, tickets and lookers are set along this “street“. Meanwhile, since natral light is an important part in outdoor street, a gradually changing pattern is added to the shelter of whole architecture. This shelter panels turn smaller above our “inner street”, the gaps between panels gets wider, to introduce more light inside building.

Xinghuatian DIstrict This site - Xinghuatian District locates in the place where the old Wuchang city once was.

04 RESIDENTIAL COMPLEX College work Fall 2009 This site – Xinghuatian district was formed in 1850s and existing building was built in 1930s. Despite the fact that most of the buildings are old and occupied for different purposes, I still found it is of essence to protect such a timed façade. Besides, the lifestyle shared by the residences living here is also a piece of intangible history of this city.

In a traditional community, every house is connected directly to the street, which is the place we spend time within. However, in a morden apartment, the elecator and stairs keep us apart from the street and make us prefer staying in houses. To keep this charming street form and meet the need of room for more people, a simple way is to lay one traditional "community" upon another.

06 TYPOLOGY CORRECTION Advanced Architectural Design Studio Spring 2015 Critic: Juan Herreros In 1960s, Port Authority sold part of airright above I-95 and established four residential towers. Besides these four gaint buildings seats bus terminal designed by Pier Luigi Nervi. Together, they were considered as modern sample at that ages. However, after 50 years, these buildings are not shiny any more. What we did in this studio was bring these towers back to life, back to the cutting edge, like in the 60s.

41

Disconnection Our site locates on Washington Bridge Apartments, four residential towers sit above expressway. In out analyze, it's a site of disconnection. Physically, these four buildings are disconneced from ground. Meanwhile, this brough mainly is occupied by Dominicans, making itself a culture enclave . Meanwhile, blocks in Manhattan are planned repeatitively. However, the life inside is quite different. Their owners tend to decorate their home with Dominican souvenir. it creates another disconnection, between exterior and interior.

42

Section 2-2

Infrastructure Loop

The infrastructural ring around Manhattan consists on a series of parks, services and transportation systems that end in Washington Heights. The trans-Manhattan expressway, when arrives to Hudson Heights translates into a piece of urban infrastructure that has lost all its potential and opportunities. Both the George Washington Bridge Bus station and the residential towers built on top of the highway are typologies that aimed to explore the potential of this infrastructural system, but that unfortunately, now remain obsolete. We propose to recover the potential of this exiting infrastructure! The scale of the existing residential towers constitutes an identity for the neighborhood. We intend to take advantage to this scale and to explore all its possibilities. We need more density! We need a hybrid living area! We need to take advantage of the existing built infrastructure! We need to explore the potentials of the intersections of metropolitan and local scales! Our proposal transforms the existing typologies of the tower and the bus stations and aims to work on a series of decisive issues: 1. We propose to add three gigantic pure geometrical forms in between the towers to provide additional public spaces/service.

Reconnection

2. The existing towers should no longer contain living areas. We transfer the living units to the south faรงade. Pay placing all the units facing south to gain more sunlight and more accessible to the three plug-in volumes for public service. 3. We believe all kinds of transportation are important, and we emphasize exchanges between subway, bus and bikes. However, we can't deny that cars are very relevant in this particular place. We offer parking lots for both New Yorkers and nearby residents by creating a high dense vertical parking facing north. 4. We propose an entertainment complex right above the existing bus station and high dense offices together to attract more people for economical benefits. 5. Our rooftops are our new public space. With incredible views of the city this is an opportunity to gather both tourists and locals. A new central park in the air will definitely changes the center of gravity of the city.

Lifestyle Corrention This correction is not only to the typology of architecture, but also to the residents lifestyle. In this design, we offered a lot of parking space, for public and residents.. It enables residents drive their cars into different floors, or even enables them park them in vicinity of their home. Meanwhile, their living units also gave them the view of Manhattan, which is quite different from those apartments in Washington Height. It's a correction to their life typology.

07 SUPERPOWERING URBAN ENACTMENTS Advanced Architectural Design Studio Summer.20014 Critic: Andres Jaque Abercrombie & Fitch, notable for using “brand representatives for store customer service, enjoyes its popularity among young customers. Its strategies help it earn reputation such as cool and fashion, but they also bring questions and protest. In this project, we took Abercrombie & Fitch as our analyze target. We found out its tactics works and why some people hate it. With architectural methods we enhanced Abercrombie & Fitch strategies, making it more effective while expanded these strategies to different people besides its original target customers.

With its flagship store on 5th Avenue , Abercrombie & Fitch created an urbanism using dreams attracting teenagers, promising to sexualize them. By doing this, Abercrombie & Fitch resocialize its customers and create controversy around world.

51

52

STRATEGIES OF ABERCROMBIE & FITCH: Re-socialize teenagers

In school, students are proud of having a piece of Abercrombie clothes.

Boys wear Abercrombie & Fitch while doing sports.

Light is dim in its store, A&F only offer bright light on their staircase, decorate its store as highway,

By controling number of people, A&F keeps a long queue.

A&F also play the most popular music in their store to gain more attention of students.

A&F’s perfume is one of their most famous products, teenaders can easily disinguish its smell in part.

Music with sexual imply in their store.

Light and mirror in fitting room also makes customers more sexy. Set up perfect role-modles

A&F expand its global market by decorating its global stores in the same way to emphasize its re-socialization. Sexualize customers’ daily life

A&F prints hot male modle on their shooping bag, implying cumstors can become sexual. Teenages keep them for daily use.

53

They also take photo fot their customers with their modle, Teenagers keep these photos.

In its campus office, A&F keep strict control on their employers, making them in perfect condition..

Combining hot modle poster with their products to create perfect figure fot them.

in store employers are also in strict control.

54

EXCLUSIVENESS OF ABERCROMBIE & FITCH:

RECONSTRUCTION OF ABERCROMBIE & FITCH:

However, as an controversial brand, Ambercrombie & Fitch always be criticized as “exclusive“, which is the very word they used to describe themselves.

Free A&F for Homeless Customers went to the charity shop goodwills buy some shirts from Af and gave them to the homeless, against A & F’s CEO ‘s statements that AF doesn’t belong to poor people.

The EF Shop EF is a discount shop on the vertical street of the 5th Ave not far away. They send men to advertise besides A&F’s queue, stealing customers there.

55

A&F excludes fat people, as they do not sel L, XL, XXL size clothes for women.

A&F also excludes Asians as they produced t-shirts printing discrimination words

Workers for A&F are excluded as A&F lack public code of conduct or stable orders at factory to protect its workers labor right

Even some “cool kids“ are excluded, as A&F require them strictly follow its guidence.

Overseas Producer The Makalot company used to be A & F’s producer, provide high quality garments. Now it has developed as a comp额titor of A&F

Thieves Dark environment in store offers great place for people to steal and damage clothes.

56
