Greetings! I hope you had a fantastic time at this year’s

What’s HAPPENING

Meet your new Fire Chief

The Buffalo Grove Fire Department (BGFD) is now operating under a new leadership team...well sort of. You see, the team is not new to town! In July, Fire Chief Larry Kane was sworn in to the top position after serving the past two years as Deputy Chief. Likewise, Deputy Fire Chief Shawn Collins, who has served with BGFD since 2002, was promoted from the position of Battalion Chief.

Leading the village’s fire, emergency medical services (EMS) and emergency management operations is no small job. It requires strong leadership, technical expertise, crisis management skills, strategic planning, effective communication, financial acumen, training and development capabilities, emotional resilience and ethical integrity to ensure public safety and operational efficiency.

Chief Kane has got all that. But we wanted to get to know him on a personal level. Scan the QR code to read an interview, and say hello next time you see him out in the community.

Facilities projects to enhance services

It’s been a long time coming! The Public Works Department had been operating in a facility that it had long outgrown. Construction on the adaptive reuse of the new facililty has been completed and operations have moved to 1650 Leider Lane, providing adequate space for all public works and engineering functions now and for well into the future.

Another facility that has out-served its useful life is Fire Station 25, located at 505 W. Dundee Road. Village leadership had been considering strategies to update its facility needs for this station in a manner that would not negatively impact service levels nor create a burden on the taxpayers. After many options were considered, rebuilding Fire Station 25 at its current location was the most thoughtful approach to achieve our goals. And what is more Smart. With heart. than aligning this project’s start with the vacancy of the old Public Works building? That’s right: The building’s Lake Cook Road location, layout and garage sizes make it the perfect temporary quarters for Fire Station 25 when its renovations begin in the coming months.

Need-to-know INFO

Rake it up! Ooo ooo.

Leaves will be dropping soon. All leaves and landscape waste should be bagged for curbside collection or placed in your labeled mixed-organics container. The week of December 9 is the last week of the year to place this waste at the curb. Remember to never rake leaves or debris into the street. Doing so can lead to flooding when it rains. Don't want to rake and bag leaves? Mulch them with a lawnmower to give your lawn and soil some excellent nutrients!

Seasonal maintenance tips

Take care of your home with preventative maintenance this fall - it’s Smart. With heart. As the weather cools, it’s a great time tune up your furnace, check and change batteries (if needed) on smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, clean out your dryer vent system, drain outdoor faucets and irrigation pumps and clean and your gutters, downspouts and eaves.

Enjoy and spooky and safe Halloween

Designated Halloween trick-or-treating hours in BG are 3 - 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 31. Indicate that you are welcoming trick-or-treaters by turning on exterior lights during that time. Drivers should be high alert, turning on headlights, taking extra time on neighborhood streets and entering and exiting driveways slowly and with caution, checking for pedestrians. Parents, make sure to check through all collected candy before children dig in! Be safe and have fun!

Donate outerwear and toys this holiday season

Helping support our community in need during the holidays is one of the many ways our BG community has heart. The Police Department’s annual coat drive is collecting new and gently used coats and outerwear from October 1 to April 1, with all donations going to Midwest Veterans Closet. Out shopping?

Consider grabbing an extra toy for a child in need. The annual Marine Toys for Tots Foundation Collection will collect new, unwrapped toys from November 4 and December 10. All donations are collected in the Police Department Lobby.

Take note of holiday schedules

Village Hall will be closed on Monday, October 14, Thursday and Friday, November 28 and 20, Tuesday and Wednesday, December 24 and 25, as well as Wednesday, January 1.

For Thanksgiving week, only Thursday and Friday waste collections will be delayed by one day. For the December and New Year’s holiday weeks, only Wednesday-Friday pickups will be delayed one day.
