A NOTE FROM OUR CEO Welcome to Tropical Home
Finding Joy In The Jungle
O
ver 30 years ago, I was drawn into the world of international architecture and interior design through a program at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark. As one of two graphic design students, I was matched up with a team of future architects, interior designers, landscape architects and industrial designers to work
on a series of projects together. And so began a lifelong obsession with design. Tropical Home is a special view of the architecture and design specific to a climate without winter, with the unique challenges of heat and humidity. The magazine not only focuses on interior design and architecture, but also on the soul of spaces. After all, the essence of design is to create spaces that influence emotions — and in Tropical Home, we are all about joy. Our maxim “live in the light” is a rallying cry to let the sun shine into both our homes and our hearts. In this issue, you will visit inspirational homes in Florida and Brazil, catch up with textile icon Adriana Scalamandré Bitter, get professional advice for your guest rooms, and travel to Thailand for a look deep into the tropics. We’ll bring you the latest news from High Point Spring Furniture Market, new hightech products designed for our climate and the latest design book releases. Since finding joy in a tropical (or sub-tropical) home usually involves food and wine, you will learn to cook with mangoes and explore colorful white wines. Health and wellness advice for your mind and body is also offered here. Our home base is in beautiful Vero Beach, so we have included a collection ON THE COVER 692 Ocean Road — A luxurious estate on one of the largest oceanfront lots in John’s Island PG 97
of our best local properties in the Real Estate Registry. I hope you enjoy it all! Meanwhile, our team is enthusiastically working on the next issue of Tropical Home, due on newsstands November 1, with expanded editorial that includes landscape design and so much more. Thank you for reading Tropical Home, and remember to “live in the light!”
Best wishes for a wonderful summer,
Beth Moulton ceo@tropicalhome.com 12

To love beauty is to see light. – VICTOR HUGO
A growing trend in 2017 is outdoor spaces with (what appear to be) interior fabrics. In reality, outdoor fabrics are constructed to withstand the challenges of weather and temperature, like the new collection offered by German manufacturer JAB Anstoetz. The collection of indoor/outdoor upholstery fabrics are UV, salt water, chlorine and mildew resistant. The fabrics are available through interior designers.
Hamptons-based design firm Mabley Handler have partnered with home furnishings leader Kravet Furniture to introduce a 35-piece furniture collection designed for the sophisticated beach dweller. To complement the collection, Mabley Handler has also gathered a selection of grasscloth wallpaper and fabrics in a harmonizing color palette. magine your new home being constructed with the latest in technology breakthroughs to make the construction process more efficient, accurate and sustainable. At the design level, Building Information Modeling (BIM) allows construction workers to see a 3D virtual view of the design that can be seen on the job site via tablets and smartphone devices. “Think bricks and sticks, not just pretty images,” says architect David Moulton of Moulton Layne P.L. “Software like Revit lets the design trades work in 3D and then do actual material ‘take-offs’ for quantity, length of materials, etc.,

drawing the actual parts and pieces for all the trades. The design can be worked out with true layouts for each duct, pipe and electrical device.” From mouse click to reality, home design and construction is getting a futuristic makeover. Architects can now step inside their own designs and make the vision come to life for the homeowner using Revit Live from Autodesk. A subscription-based service for architects and engineers, Revit Live takes the user into virtual reality mode in just two clicks. Walking through rooms to see doors opening and lights coming on, as well as understanding how light and shadow affects the rooms at different times of the day, gives a whole new meaning to “try before you buy.”

unshine State residents love a good view, but the sun’s rays streaming into the home can damage floors, furniture and artwork. Low-E coating on glass at the factory level helps save energy costs because it reflects light and heat outward. “The Solarban R 100 glass is a new low-E glass that reduces visible light transmission, and for oceanfront homes, that keeps them in compliance with sea turtle lighting requirements,” says Ray Reinhard, president of HBS Glass. “You can flip on a light in the home and not worry that a sea turtle hatchling will get turned around.” For South Florida residents looking to bring the outside in, the sliding glass door is getting a functional makeover. “A big new trend is the folding glass wall to replace traditional sliders, which have just one opening as one door slides in front of the stationary piece,” according to Reinhard. “These folding glass doors or stackable glass doors can provide a complete, clear opening to the outside, perfect for entertaining.”
Energy-efficient, low-E Solarban R 100 glass has a slight gray-blue tint that provides privacy and complies with sea turtle lighting regulations for oceanfront homes.
Traditional sliding glass doors are giving way to high performance folding glass walls to allow for the largest opening to the outside.

he location was perfect. So was the house. Set high on a peninsula in Ocean Reef, with views of a deepwater canal on one side and Card Sound on the other, the new owners couldn’t wait to settle in. There was one small problem — they were moving from a small two-bedroom condominium nearby into a 6,000-plus square foot residence with five bedrooms. Not only did they need furnishings and decorating advice, they wanted to update the great room, kitchen and master bedroom. Fortunately, their real estate agent referred them to interior designer Marcia Larson ASID, owner of Island Interiors at Ocean Reef Inc. It was a match made in heaven. After meeting with the owners and discussing their likes, dislikes and lifestyle, as well as taking into consideration the existing architectural and spatial characteristics of their home, Larson suggested following a “Hawaiian modern” theme. “This is an active couple who love to travel and entertain. This is their seasonal home, and they definitely didn’t want a typical ‘Florida look,’ so I did some research and came up with idea books that showed them the gen-

eral feel and character of Hawaiian-style decor. They loved the look. It became a basis for planning, and off we went,” Larson enthuses. That was four years ago. The planning process began in late 2013 and continued into the following year as Larson, Key Largo architect Timothy Slawson, Frank Lawson of Stathis Construction and Don Trezona of GardenScapes and Services from Homestead joined forces. “The major renovation part of the project was completed during 2014 and furnished so the homeowners and their family could arrive to see it completed for the first time just after Christmas that year,” says Larson. “The second phase of interior furnishing continued into 2015 and was finally completed for the 2015-2016 winter season.” The project was not without its challenges as what had started as a three-room renovation grew to include the entire residence. Upon close inspection, the roof structure above the great room had to be rebuilt, not just altered cosmetically as originally planned. Then there was the kitchen and family room ceiling, a series of skylights with louvered panels that filled the space with sunshine during the day; however, additional light sources were needed at night and when skies became overcast. That wasn’t all. As Larson explains, “It was decided to redesign the pool, changing it from a typical rectangle to a more natural shape that would fit in with the concept of a tropical oasis within a mid-century Hawaii modern design style.” Smart decision. Another was Larson’s concept for the great room, a large, generous space that could have become overwhelming had it not been for Larson’s skill at designing areas for conversation, cocktails and dining. Compatible furnishings, with side chairs upholstered in a brilliant tropical floral fabric, can be easily rearranged to accommodate additional guests wherever needed. A perfect example: this past January the owners hosted a chamber music event during which 80 guests were seated for the musical portion of the evening. The

standing ovation wasn’t only for the musicians, as those in the audience celebrated a setting that literally transports you to Maui and back again. So let’s take a tour and see what all the applause is about. It begins upon arrival. Contemporary architecture, complemented with lush tropical plantings and palm trees that reach for the sky set the stage. Three levels of stairs bordered by crushed coral rock ledges lead to a covered entry where double mahogany doors welcome you inside the courtyard terrace. This is where it gets interesting; with no formal foyer to set the stage, how best to create a sense of arrival? Taking a cue from the floor plans she knows works so well in courtyard homes, Larson suggested placing the dining room near the entry. “I think everyone on the team, including the owners, thought I had lost my mind,” she laughs. “I explained that the dining room is the one room that is least often used, therefore is often the most presentable. Plus, it would make a natural divider. Suddenly, everyone was on board with the concept and the rest easily fell into place.” On one side, a long bar with high-back stools stands ready to serve the thirsty. the bar keeps the sports fans happy. Close by a long dining table, its top a single piece of Chamcha wood with an unfinished edge, is supported by two contemporary brass bases in a bronze finish. Maguire chairs provide seating. Six were in the owners’ former dining room; two additional chairs were ordered unfinished and custom detailed locally to make for a perfect match. As Larson notes, the impressive twin chandeliers overhead deserve special mention. “A single light fixture, unless it were long and linear, which I felt would unnecessarily compete with the lines of the table and the adjacent bar, wouldn’t do. So we decided to use a pair of matching chandeliers — but not just any chandeliers. These are formed from a hammered metal frame and feature polished horn. They make a striking centerpiece,” she points out, delighting in the desired results. Between the bar and water-facing sliding glass doors, Larson created a cocktail area that opens to an outdoor terrace with additional dining and lounge spaces. In another part of the great room she designed a cozy, comfortable setting centered on the gas fireplace. And last, but certainly not least, a large corner space with views of the waterway boasts two generous-sized sofas, a pair of wood-framed lounge chairs, a grouping of tables that can serve as additional seating, plus a pull-up chair that 36

can do double duty at the dining table when necessary. The family room adjacent to the kitchen offers additional seating opportunities, thanks to double sofas and side chairs. Custom cabinetry houses a large screen TV and other electronics. The colorful glass sculptures on the wall were a find from The Laughing Dog Gallery in Vero Beach. When it came time to introduce the bedroom wing of the house, Larson created a small entry foyer with twin chairs upholstered in a tropical print linen fabric. Here a mirror and console table from the owners’ former condo were repurposed, as was a small “martini table.” A hallway leads to the powder room where Larson selected a honey onyx vessel sink, placing it on a wooden beam that serves as a vanity counter. As with so many other design details, there is a tale to tell. “The beam was actually created by the contractor-builder’s carpenters and hand-distressed to look old, like it could have been one of the original ceiling timbers,” says Larson, who enthusiastically adds, “I was given the opportunity one day when visiting the job site during construction and actually took a couple of whacks at the piece myself with a hammer to contribute to the distressing. It was a great stress reliever!” Between the couple’s three children, seven grandchildren, not to mention several friends, the four

spacious guest bedrooms are more often than not “booked solid.” One has a king size bed; two have queens; and another has twin beds. All feature custom furnishings with tropical touches, textured floor coverings, and postcard-perfect water views. The master bedroom outshines them all with a panoramic view of the deepwater canal where the owner’s boat awaits the next open water adventure. Again, custom furnishings and accessories set the stage, especially in the cozy sitting area. Thanks to Larson’s penchant for repurposing, a sofa, twin side chairs that had been in the living room of the owners’ former condo, have been given a fresh new role to play. “This is a perfect demonstration of what I consider to be one of my strongest assets, using the client’s existing furnishings in new ways, sometimes refinished or recovered, and blended in with new items to create a completely different look,” she says, understandably pleased with the end result. Larson has had plenty of experience doing just that, thanks to a professional career that spans 30 years. She joined Island Interiors at Ocean Reef 20 years ago as senior designer and manager of the firm’s Vero Beach design studio, and two years ago she took the leap and purchased the company headquartered in Ocean Reef 38

since 1975. She loves what she does, and it shows. “When I was a young girl my father introduced me to the architecture, design and art section of books in the local library and I would spend hour after hour there leafing through the volumes. Also, it wasn’t unusual for me to wander through the local furniture store while my parents were shopping at the neighboring grocery store,” Larson muses. By the time she was a pre-teen she had made her initial venture into what she calls “designing with my own drumbeat” by overruling her parents’ choice of green carpeting for her bedroom, insisting on royal blue. Royal blue it was. With the choice of Hawaii modern, her designing drumbeat not only met the homeowners’ vision and a tight timeline. “As the designer on a project you play the role of creative director, determining what the vision the client has and then finding the tools, be it fabric, furniture, tradesmen, to make that vision become a livable reality and how to creatively but practically solve those challenges that arise,” says Larson. “My personal reward comes from knowing that a project I have worked on has given someone else joy, happiness, safety, pleasure and a place they can proudly call their own.” ❂

hen you live in the land of sun, sand and surf, friends and family love to come and savor the tropical surroundings you enjoy year round. Making visitors feel welcome beyond the initial happy-you’re-here hugs means creating guest bedrooms that are not only inviting but provide all the comforts of home. Which is not always easy. Seeking the advice of professional designers such as Spectrum Interior Design’s Susan Schuyler Smith ASID and project manager Natalie Holtom can make all the difference between basic and beautiful, functional and fabulous. Over the years the Spectrum team has designed and furnished guest bedrooms that not only boast a “wow” look, they feature amenities even the most thoughtful hostess might not think to include. That’s why taking time to think about ways to make house guests feel right at home can up the enjoyment level. “The guest bedroom is not a step child,” Smith points out. “There’s really no difference in how we would furnish one as the décor should flow with the rest of the house. It’s important to be in tune with the family, knowing their decorating style and the colors they like.” Reflecting the homeowner’s personality and pref40

erences while accommodating the needs of those most likely to spend time in the guest bedroom helps guide the choice of furnishings. As Holtom says, “It all starts with the bed, and the hardest thing to decide is what size. Is it going to be a king, queen, full or twins? A lot depends on the size of the bedroom. If space is tight maybe bunk beds or a trundle bed would work best.” Spectrum’s extensive design portfolio is full of eye-catching examples of guest bedrooms. Whether the décor is tailored or casual, what they all have in common is beautiful bedding and plenty of plump pillows. Enhancements include custom headboards, footboards and bed skirts with borders and trims. Textural touches make an appearance in floor coverings, woven blinds, a rattan or wicker side chair. Page after page of photographs show bedrooms that say “Come on in and make yourself at home — we’re glad you’re here.” To make sure guests get that at-home feeling, Smith notes the need to have a bedside table or chest with a lamp that sheds sufficient lighting for reading. “We always try to put books in the room that tell about the history of the area, such as the story of McKee (Botanical Garden) and Patrick Smith’s A Land Remembered. “We also include reference materials like the Vero Beach Handbook that have information about where to go, what to see, things to do. We often include a recent novel or two, and if a guest hasn’t finished reading it, he or she can take it with them, which makes for a nice farewell gift.” When it comes to additional amenities, Smith recommends having a chair where guests can sit, read, relax, perhaps tie or strap on their shoes as today’s higher beds, with pillow-top mattresses can make such a simple everyday task a challenge. Smith also suggests, if room allows, placing a bench at the foot of the bed for the same purpose or for putting folded bedding. Including a few treasured touches is sure to receive appreciative applause — a glass vase with fresh flowers on the nightstand, a cluster of shells in a ceramic bowl on the dresser top, a colorful painting of a beach scene on the wall. All add charm and can easily be moved about or replaced depending on the season or mood. “If we’re working with a client who has been living in the house for some time and wants a fresh, new look, the entire feeling of the room can be changed by painting the walls another color and getting new bedding. Sometimes

we will do a simple duvet and pillow change and pop in a new color. These are quick, easy upgrades anyone can do, and they make a big difference,” Holtom smiles. While window treatments can be an addition to any bedroom, it’s wise to remember that their principle function is to provide privacy and keep light out, especially at night. Roman shades, blinds, plantation shutters and lined draperies are among the many options to consider. “I tell homeowners they should stay in the guest bedroom overnight to see just how the bed feels, if there’s enough light for reading, and if the room is dark enough to get a good night’s sleep,” says Holtom. For Smith, creating a beautiful guest bedroom goes hand in hand with making sure the guest bath is beautiful as well. “The colors of the bedroom should be brought into the bathroom,” she notes. “This is where you want to create a spa-like look with toiletries similar to what you would find in a fine hotel and lots of fresh fluffy towels. We like white ones, and we always include one or two dark washcloths for removing makeup.” Soap, shampoo and conditioner (Spectrum recommends the pump variety), a hairdryer, magnifying mirror, as well as toothbrushes and toothpaste are other items to add to the list of thoughtful touches. If you follow Smith and Holtom’s advice, you can be sure that when it comes time for your guests to say goodbye they will leave with wonderful memories you helped create. The farewell hugs guarantee they’ll be back. ❂ 44

f you think Rio de Janeiro is only Copacabana and the monumental Christ the Redeemer statue atop Sugarloaf Mountain, think again. Rio is also tropical gardens in a quiet neighborhood with panoramic vistas from the windows of a turn-of-the-century villa fitted out with all modern conveniences and simply exploding with color. The French designer Laurent Gélis discovered this property on one of his trips to Brazil, looking for inspiration for his iconoclastic fashion and accessories lines. It was the villa’s old-fashioned and derelict look as well as the vicinity to the bohemian and artistic studios of the neighborhood that influenced his decision to buy it. He had been searching for a place where he and his friends could go to relax, disconnect from the hectic European lifestyle and be inspired by the exuberant surroundings. In Rio de Janeiro he found the perfect combination. The neighborhood of Santa Teresa had always had

Two walls were taken down in order to create the large living room – now an open space with ample casual seating with direct access to the winter garden. In addition to a new kitchen, the main structural changes took place in the sleeping area. There are now five bedrooms, each with an en suite bathroom. n a picture-perfect spring morning, Adriana “Yana” Scalamandré Bitter looks out the windows of her garden room and smiles. Even though clusters of palm trees, flowering shrubs and sparkling lake waters are familiar sights, they never fail to inspire her creative muse. “An artist once told me: if you cannot find something outside your front or back door to paint, then you’re not an artist. There’s always something — a tree, a flower, a building just waiting for you,” says Yana, gesturing towards an easel where the painting of a weathered barn awaits final brush strokes. “I love to record the way things are today, for tomorrow they could be gone,” says the lifelong artist who delights in capturing moments in time. “At this year’s Art by the Sea show I sold a painting I did of Peterson’s Grove. The groves with all their orange trees are slowly disappearing and I would like to think that the person who bought my painting wanted to remember what the land once looked like.” Many of Yana’s moments in time will be forever linked with Scalamandré, the textile firm famous for designing and weaving silks, wools, linens, cottons and elaborate trims that her father Franco founded in 1929. Yana was just 8 years old when her painting of angels and ribbons inspired the creation of a new fabric design. By the time she turned 10 she was hand-painting designs on textiles and her father presented her with her first commission. However, not all of the young girl’s artistic inspirations were commission worthy. Yana’s brown eyes sparkle as she tells of a well-intended embellishment gone wrong. “I was about 6 years old when my parents got their first Zenith television set. It was a beautiful piece of furniture and they were so proud of it,” she recalls. “I looked at the doors and thought they would look so much better if they had a design on them, so I decided

I could never understand why when my mother got home and took one look at what I had done, she sat down and cried.” Not to be deterred from her artistic pursuits, Yana continued drawing as images of deer and circus horses flew from her lively imagination on to paper, then fabric. “I never stopped drawing or painting,” she muses. “We had a beach cottage and my father had an Italian artist come to work with me when I was about 7. I remember he told my father don’t give her too many lessons. Let her be creative and learn by herself.” And learn she did, not only about art, but also about history, as Scalamandré’s portfolio of historical renovations grew to include hundreds of high-profile restorations such as the Metropolitan Opera House, William Randolph Heart’s castle in San Simeon, California, and George Washington’s Mount Vernon. If and when Franco was told none of the original textiles were to be found, he knew just where to search. “My father saw a mouse hole at Mount Vernon and recommended that it should be opened with the possi64

bility that original scraps of fabrics could be found in the hole. Mice are known for stealing bits of materials to use for their nests,” says Yana. “Sure enough, they opened walls and found layers of fabric inside, as well as a silver spoon. We reproduced a piece of original dimity that was found.” Yana and the Scalamandré story wouldn’t be complete without a romantic twist that had a happy ending. She had just turned 19 when she met and fell in love with a young man by the name of Edwin Bitter. There was a problem, however: Edwin was in the Navy, and marrying him would mean leaving her family and the business that had become such an integral part of her life. “When Ed asked my father for permission to marry me my father told him, ‘No, not unless you come and work with me for one year,’” Yana says with a knowing smile. “Ed’s father was a collector who was always into American history, and once Ed saw what we were doing with all of the historic restorations, he loved it, left the Navy and came into the business.” Three years later the two were married. And that posed another problem. “I literally didn’t know how to boil an egg,” admits Yana, who turned to her mother for help. Ed never suspected a thing, as his young bride was a fast learner. “To me, cooking is an art. It’s like creating a painting where you say to yourself, oh, maybe I need a little 66

bit more purple, or red, or maybe yellow,” Yana laughs as her hands add imaginary ingredients to what she calls her “refrigerator salad.” The same can be said for her homemade soups as she culls through the contents of the refrigerator for tasty and eye-pleasing ingredients. While Yana focused on product design in her studio at Scalmandré’s mill in New York City, Ed oversaw sales. The couple worked hard, and the company thrived. When time allowed they would head south to their rest and relaxation home in Ocean Reef, Key Largo. After they retired, the couple settled there until Ed’s deteriorating health led them to Vero Beach. “We knew we needed to be closer to good medical facilities, and we had often visited friends here. Ed and I loved everything about Vero — the culture, the theatre, the art museum — and we found the perfect place,” says Yana, describing what she fondly refers to as “our little cottage on a lake.” “The house was perfect. The only thing wrong was there wasn’t a place for me to have an art studio, and I really wanted one. Where we live there are strict architectural rules and requirements and you’re not able to add to the footprint, so I found this little niche. I pushed out the wall and created a small studio where I do my watercolors and sketches.” One would never know the space off a hallway

between bedrooms was never part of the original structure. This is where Yana’s drawing table, painting and drawing supplies, and a wall covered with sketches, designs and art awards reside. Sun filters in through louvered French doors that open to a lanai where carefully tended orchids bloom. Yana wasted no time in joining Vero Beach Art Club and signing up to take art classes at Vero Beach Museum of Art. “I thought I’d died and had wakened in artist’s heaven,” Yana smiles. “The art club is wonderful because you have a commonality with other members and there are meetings, presentations and exhibits.” When a fellow artist invited her to join her group of plein air painters, Yana was hooked. “I love painting out of doors. Every Wednesday I paint with a group of artists, and we go somewhere — McKee, Rock City, often they come here and we paint in my back yard. I have my little cart and I’ll tuck in a couple of canvases, paints, brushes, a sketchbook and pencils. “I prefer to paint on site; I rarely work from a photograph, except maybe on the beach, where children can run free and play. They move so quickly it’s sometimes hard to capture them. Last year I sold a painting called ‘The Red Bucket.’ It was of a little boy on the beach with his red bucket. He was everywhere with that bucket and reminded me of my own son,” says the mother of four,

grandmother of 19 and great-grandmother to 12. Even though Yana paints mostly with oils, she is also adept at watercolor, which she notes takes much more discipline. “With oil I might want to move the tree from here to there, or maybe I decide I don’t want a blue sky after all, I want a purple one, and I can make the changes. You can’t do that in watercolor.” Yet above all, a simple pencil and sketchbook are favored tools. “They’re always with me, especially when I travel. I never know what I will see. For example, if I’m waiting for someone or at an airport I can start drawing. I love the pencil because it’s so easy to carry.” It was Yana’s pencil drawings that prompted her elementary school principal to take interest and make a special request. “When I was in first grade, PS131 in Jamaica Estates (New York), the principal called me into her office and handed me a notebook. She said just fill this with your drawings and give it back to me when you’ve finished, so I did. Years later when she was retiring, she gave it back to me. She had kept it all that time,” says Yana, savoring a special memory. Perhaps that is why she is rarely without her sketchbook and pencil. Even though Ed has passed away and Scalamandré is a thing of the past for Yana, her days are full. “I have wonderful memories, a beautiful family, many friends, and I enjoy golf, music, and travel with my special new friend Bob, while I continue to find time to paint,” Yana enthuses. “Before I was working in textile design, which I loved, now I can express myself the way I want to. “I was born an artist. Even though I don’t recall anyone putting a crayon or pencil in my hand, I just remember that as a child I would sit down and draw every day for hours. I’m able do the same thing now, and it’s wonderful.” ❂

Summer In The Tropics Tips for getting fit and healthy in our steamy climate

verybody wants to spend a sunny summer at the seashore. Here’s how to take advantage of our area’s natural beauty, and some of its humanly enhanced attractions as well, to become fit, trim, tan and strong — in a word, healthy. There’s no need to fly away to exotic spas; everything you need to reach your summer shape-up goal is right in your own town. Whether your target is weight loss, weight lifting or workouts with a wallop, you’ll find expert advice and 68

the best equipment right here. Whatever your goal, you can get there inside or out. Florida boasts numerous gyms and salons, plus miles of paths for bikes or skates and even more miles of uncrowded beaches for walking or jogging. The great outdoors can be great for you, but be smart. Moderation and common sense are the only way to achieve your beauty and fitness goals. Fad diets and furious fits of sporadic exercise will wear you out without paring you down. Rule Number 1: Don’t even think about going outside without sunscreen — even on cloudy days. SPF of 15 or higher will protect your skin from that ultimate villain, melanoma causer and rapid wrinkler: ultraviolet light. Don’t only slather up when you’re headed for the beach or a tennis game; you can get plenty of sun just walking to your car across a parking lot. And don't forget about umbrellas, wide-brimmed hats and good, old-fashioned shade for sun protection. Tommy Dorsey made a mint on Sunny Side of The Street, but you’re better off avoiding it whenever possible.

ore fun, more scenic, and probably almost as good for you, is walking the beach or biking. Because there’s hardly ever a day when you can’t go outside here, you have no excuse. Low tide is best for beach walking; the sand is firmer and the slope less steep. For long outings, many walkers prefer walking shoes to bare feet for the support and strength they provide. Be careful not to overdo it at first; the uneven surface can wreak havoc with hips and spines. Be aware that those shin cramps on the muscles in the fronts of your calves, the ones you thought only appeared after a day in San Francisco, may act up, too. Endangered sea turtles nest on our beaches in the spring and summer. Use their distinctive v-shaped tracks to determine how far to walk. Turn around when you’ve seen 12 tracks. (One summer I counted 25 within a mile.) Don’t touch. Do not disturb the nests in any way, and report any disturbances to the police or the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. While our beaches are rarely crowded in the

summer, that doesn’t mean you’ll be all alone. Whiterumped sandpipers, American oyster catchers and Wilson’s plovers scurry along the water’s edge looking for coquina clams and tiny crustaceans. Brown pelicans and graceful least terns dive for their dinner while laughing gulls are shoreline scavengers, as anyone who has ever opened a picnic basket knows. Way up you may see a soaring osprey and watch him swoop into the sea to grab his lunch. Scan past the surf and you may spot a dolphin or a leaping manta ray. Schools of bait fish turn the surface silver. (That’s when you stay out of the water because the big fish may be following.) Beach combing is best after a storm. Look for sea beans, interesting shells, sand dollars, maybe even a message in a bottle or shipwreck booty. If you find plastic or styrofoam objects washed up, please do the wildlife a favor and take the trash home to throw it away.

fter you’ve cleared your plan with your doctor (although it seems that most doctors will do anything to make you exercise rather than tell you not to), set yourself a schedule. It’s so easy to get into a habit and so hard to break one — except of course if it’s a habit that's good for you, like exercise. It’s easier to keep to a program if you do it regularly. There are many would-be workout wonders who are so skeptical of their self-discipline that they must attend scheduled classes or work out with a personal trainer in order to exercise at all. High-intensity interval training, spinning and step aerobics, in descending order of intensity, are all good calorie burners and excellent cardiovascular training. Because they are lessons in perpetual motion, they are true aerobic exercises — nonstop, as opposed to kick boxing and the like, which are anaerobic, or start and stop. They’re great for the heart and for strengthening but not as calorie consuming as the others. A high-intensity interval training class will burn about 600 calories in 45 minutes. A 45-minute spinning class, in which participants ride stationary bicycles at their own speed and intensity, will burn up about 500 calories. (You won't find it hard to pedal fast with a throbbing disco beat and shouted encouragement from the teacher.) Step aerobics is just a bit less intense, burning 300 to 500 calories an hour.

umerous recent studies have shown that elderly men and women can lower their risk of falling, their risk of stroke and even death with help from exercise. Findings by the University of Florida indicate that exercise may be the key to maintaining health in old age. One study found that weight training may reduce the occurrence of osteoporosis; another showed that

older men who perform high-intensity training don’t increase risk to their coronary arteries and that aerobic capacity does not necessarily decrease with age as previously thought. The New England Journal of Medicine published a study that showed that elderly men and women, who had been so frail that most depended on walkers to get around, increased their mobility substantially after only 10 weeks of strength training. One hundred men and women in their 80s and 90s, all of whom had at least one chronic illness, improved their strength by 118 percent, resulting in increased ability to walk quickly and to climb stairs more easily. A long-held belief that after a certain age the human body is unable to exercise strenuously has been debunked, and the observation has been made that people who do not do weight-bearing exercises lose muscle mass quickly. The 10-week program increased the subject’s ability to climb stairs by 28 percent and increased their walking speed by 12 percent. One 85-year-old who was lifting 5 pounds at the beginning of the program was lifting 15 by the end. Dr. Maria Fiatarone, who conducted the study at Tufts University, says, “If you do nothing, muscle will decline rapidly and this impacts functioning in a variety of ways — flexibility, balance and cardiovascular well-being. Muscle training can prevent loss of independence and prevent people from becoming chair- or bed-bound.” A 10-year investigation of death rates among more than 800 Dutch men over the age of 64 at the commencement of the study reports that men with the highest activity levels had a 30 percent lower death rate than the men in the lowest activity group. Reductions in death risk seemed to rise along with increases in exercise intensity. For example, the study showed that overall risks for fatal stroke were 60 percent lower among men who took part in high-energy workouts regularly compared with less strenuous routines. The life-prolonging program of 20 minutes of exercise at least three times a week can be extrapolated to elderly women. Another study report in USA Today showed that Tai Chi, the ancient Chinese martial art, cuts the risk of dangerous falls among the elderly by almost one half. The body motions are slow and measured and improved balance and stability, reducing the risk of falls, the biggest health hazard for older people. 70

Excellent Vibes in Your Home: How and Why You Should Make Them Flow BY BRIDGET WEBBER
Y
ou might not believe the vibrations, or vibes, inside buildings impact well-being and mood. You can probably agree, though, it’s possible to sense whether you like the atmosphere of a room. Most likely, you’ve entered one before and felt uneasy, detecting something wasn’t right. Or, you may have visited someone’s home or office and felt terrific for no apparent reason. On such occasions, you knew the atmosphere of the building was good for you. You were comfortable and relaxed, no matter how you felt before entering the place.
Y
our emotions arise due to thoughts that can be stimulated by your environment. Walk into a house that’s cluttered and has an unpleasant smell, and you won’t feel good. You’ll entertain negative thoughts, and your built-in disgust response will kick in. Humans are designed to enjoy pleasant surroundings. They respond to a safe, fresh, pleasing environment by producing feel-good chemicals. Junk, stale air and dark colors create a bad atmosphere that makes you uncomfortable. Recent research into the effect of the environment on emotions involved hooking up a volunteer to an EEG machine. It showed brainwaves change when someone’s in a room that’s been subject to feng shui. According to the principles of feng shui, object placement in rooms influences wellness. When the volunteer in the experiment was in a room designed to create a pleasant atmosphere, her brainwaves entered the alpha state. Her mind was in a state of peace because her environment was pleasing. When the subject entered a room where feng shui hadn’t been applied, her brainwaves went into a beta state. Beta thinking, although fine for everyday tasks, isn’t conducive to creativity or getting in the zone. It’s associated with logic and dealing with problems. While in beta, you might worry as your mind attempts to find solutions, making you stressed. The alpha brainwaves created by being in a pleasant

he first step to creating excellent vibes at home or work involves getting rid of clutter. According to feng shui, junk and rubbish stop healthy energy circulating. They also create mental unease because they make life difficult. You have to move around piles of clutter, or you may trip. Additionally, finding things under mountains of stuff is hard. Don’t only reduce clutter, however. Get rid of anything that’s not useful, meaningful or beautiful. The thoughts attached to objects influence your mood. Thus, that clumpy piece of furniture you’ve meant to throw out makes you tense. Also, the books you don’t read

from yesteryear don’t reflect your current taste. They remind you of the past and subconsciously hold you back from being who you are now. Next, use mirrors to reflect light from windows, change the air in rooms and consider the color scheme. Dark colors can create dark moods, while light ones generate light emotions. Avoid dark red and black, which can make people feel hostile, and favor sky blue, white, or pale green. The next step is to consider your taste with regards to what makes you feel terrific. Some people like incense, crystals, cushions and soft throws. Others like minimalism, along with modern technology. Use what you already find uplifting rather than letting others suggest what will make you produce happy thoughts. Bring excellent vibes into your home, and you will feel different. Your mood will be good, despite what’s happening around you. Even if your emotions slip, you can breathe in the atmosphere of the environment and cope well. Seeing objects and colors you enjoy will inspire you, helping you produce alpha brainwaves. As a result, you’ll be creative, innovative and calm. ❂

environment generated a stress-busting, meditative, creative state. Although there are times when you don’t mind having beta brainwaves, out-of-the-box thinking, which creates unique solutions, only happens when you switch mental states. Shifting to an alpha state will relieve anxiety, leaving you tranquil, while also helping you come up with ideas. Thus, ensuring your home or office encourages alpha brainwaves can help you relax and be innovative.

hen you think of a great location for a vineyard, an active volcano may not be the first place that springs to mind. However, that is precisely where one classic and distinctive variety of white wine is produced. Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio, from the slopes of Mount Vesuvius in southern Italy, is a wine with vibrant flavors to match its unusual background. It’s one of several exotic white wine varieties that I will be focusing on in this issue’s column. Any of these wines would be a refreshing choice for a tropical summer evening.

On the Volcano
B
efore Mount Vesuvius erupted in the first century, the Romans knew it as a rich agricultural area. On its slopes, they built villas — and they planted vineyards. What they did not know was the richness of the soil came at a price. Yes, volcanic ash does make for incredibly fertile soil, but Vesuvius erupted in the year 79, destroying Pompeii and other nearby cities. An eyewitness account from an ancient Roman writer related how “on Mount Vesuvius broad sheets of fire and leaping flames blazed at several points, their bright glare emphasized by the darkness of night.” Today, although we know that Vesuvius is an active volcano, winemakers are still tending vineyards on its slopes — perhaps in keeping with another Roman proverb which claims that “fortune favors
the bold.” A bold, swashbuckling spirit is also in keeping with the culture of nearby Naples, where the ever-present sight of the blue cone of Vesuvius on the horizon is a dramatic backdrop to the theatrical flair of one of Italy’s great cities. The grapes that grow from the rich volcanic soil are used by the winemakers at a vineyard known as Mastroberardino to make the unique white wine Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio Bianco. Mastroberardino’s website remarks that “it is impossible to ignore such a force of nature in the expression of aromas and flavors,” and sure enough, Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio Bianco is a vibrant wine. Its color is pale gold, and the wine is rich with aromas as fresh and green as new spring grass and with bright, refreshing flavors reminiscent of lemon and other citrus fruits. Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio is a unique wine because of its place of origin; it’s also unusual in that the white (bianco) is more renowned than the red. The name “Lacryma Christi,” which translates as “the tears of Christ,” refers to an old story with several variations, wherein Christ is weeping over the wickedness he has seen, and the vines grow from his tears.

raveling from the Old World to the New, a delightful white wine variety from South America is torrontés. Torrontés is distinctive to Argentina, which is an increasingly important country in the world of wine. Just take note of the increasing popularity of Malbec, Argentina’s signature red variety, which is grown at high-elevation vineyards in the Andes. There, the vines produce yields which are small, but which have very concentrated flavors, making Andean Malbec a rich red wine. Malbec’s counterpart, in a sense, is torrontés, a white variety which also thrives in Andean vineyards. Torrontés tends to be flowery and can also have flavors reminiscent of tropical fruit. A particularly vibrant example that I tried recently is Piattelli Reserve Torrontés, from a vineyard with an elevation of 5,900 feet. The label features an artistic image of mountain slopes and cacti. This wine is intensely fruity with flavors that reminded me slightly of fresh pineapple. There is also a slight effervescence to Piatelli Reserve Torrontés, which is not necessarily characteristic of the grape variety, but which gives this example a festive air.

nother intriguing Italian white wine is garganega, which hails from a very different region of the country: the Veneto, the mainland area near the city of Venice. I recently tried a wine from a vineyard known as La Cappuccina. La Cappuccina (which I realize sounds more like a caffé) uses garganega grapes in a white blend. Their vineyard is located near the Veneto city of Verona — so this wine goes to show that there’s more to Verona than Juliet’s balcony. La Cappuccina’s Nadia Bianco is a blend, meaning that different grape varieties, with complementary flavors, are combined during the winemaking process. Some blends are very complex, but Nadia Bianco is mostly about garganega, which makes up 80 percent of the wine. The remaining 20 percent is sauvignon blanc, which I’ve consistently found to be a flavorful and refreshing white variety. This wine is made with organically grown grapes. Nadia Bianco is a very floral wine, both in aroma and in flavor profile. The label, which is a delightfully beachy aqua hue, aptly shows a white flower. This white wine is off-dry, meaning it is neither dry nor sweet. Like many white wines, it is good served lightly chilled, which of course will add to the refreshing appeal of these wines on a tropical summer evening.

ot only are all of these wines refreshing in hot weather, but they also have another quality that makes them well-suited to coastal life: they all pair very well with seafood. The flavor of grouper, snapper, or any other fresh Treasure Coast fish would be enhanced by a glass of one of these white wines. The same is true of shellfish dishes. A platter of fresh fruit would make for an equally tropical vegetarian option. The torrontés could also complement spicy Asian dishes (which can be notoriously tricky to match with a wine). Each of these white wines has a colorful background, and each one has vibrant flavors to offer. Any one of them would be a fine choice for a tropical summer evening. ❂

T
he Kingdom of Thailand receives around 30 million tourists per year and its capital, Bangkok, was the second most-visited city in the world in 2015. There’s a long list of reasons for Thailand’s popularity, including its rich culinary heritage, tropical climate, sun-kissed beaches, ancient archaeological sites, exotic wildlife, lively festivals, thriving nightlife and relatively inexpensive living costs. Before you pack your bags, take a little time to prepare for this trip of a lifetime.
Vaccinations Make sure all of your normal vaccinations are complete and up-to-date, then get hepatitis A, typhoid and tetanus shots. Additional vaccinations may be advised, depending on the specific area you want to visit and what activities you plan to engage in; speak to your doctor for more details. Note that some vaccinations are given over a period of weeks or months, so go to your doctor about this as soon as you begin to plan your travels.
Visa Note: visa requirements can change without notice, so check with the Thai embassy for confirmation prior to traveling. According to the Thai embassy website, citizens of many countries can apply for a visa-on-arrival, including the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and most of Europe. This grants you 30 days if you arrive by air, 15 if by land and can be extended up to 60 additional days if you receive permission from the Thai embassy. You must have cash or traveler’s checks equivalent to 20,000 Thai Baht (approximately U.S. $600) upon arrival, as well as proof of onward travel within the allotted time period.
Getting There It is a long journey from the United States, but once you arrive you will find the lengthy flights were well worth it. As there are no direct flights from the United States, ensuring that you travel with a reliable and comfortable airline is important. Mary Lane, owner of Eileen’s Travel based in West Palm Beach, reccomends Wat Arun is a Buddhist temple in the Bangkok Yai district of Bangkok, on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River.

Cathay Pacific Airlines with a stop over in Hong Kong. At Hong Kong’s airport (HKG) you will not have to clear customs; there is no terminal change to continue to Bangkok; and you will find some of the best business and first-class lounges in the world. The airport also has delicious noodle bars to keep you satisfied during the three-hour flight to your final destination.
Exploring Knowing a bit about local customs and other ins and outs when traveling is part of the trip preparation process. Here are a few suggestions to guide you in Thailand: • Haggling at the markets is the norm. Those who love a good deal will not want to miss shopping at the night markets, which offer a carnival-like atmosphere. • Even conservative eaters shouldn’t hold back from enjoying Bangkok’s 24-hour street-side food stalls. • Dress appropriately when visiting sacred sites such as temples. Shoes must be removed before entering, and shoulders, knees and ankles must be covered. • The country is filled with world-renowned spas. A refreshing spa treatment can be a relaxing way to end a day of sightseeing.

When To Go Thailand has three seasons: summer, winter and the wet season. February, March and April are the hottest months, with max temperatures reaching about 104 degrees Fahrenheit in some areas. The wet season starts in May, bringing the highs down to around 86 degrees and averages to 77 degrees. This rainy time period runs through October, so you’ll need ponchos and umbrellas in these months. You’ll get the best weather from November to January, when the rain eases up but the temperatures stay in the same range. However, these are the most popular months to visit, so expect tourist spots to be more crowded.

Packing For Paradise Packing for a trip to Thailand can pose quite the challenge as visitors who are planning to trek in the northern region will most likely also visit the sunny beaches of the south, so you’ll need options for both areas. As a starting point, be sure to pack in a lightweight suitcase or backpack. Even if you left your backpacking days behind you long ago, lugging around a large, heavy suitcase is less than practical in this part of the world. Also, clothing is inexpensive in Thailand, so if you do underpack, a trip to the market for a few additional items is an easy fix. 86

And once you experience the happy faces and rich traditions of Thailand, you, too, will call it the Land of Smiles. ❂

IN PERSPECTIVE The Five “C”s
Selling A House? Follow the five Cs of home staging for a quick sale
W
hen you’re ready to sell your house, you can help your buyers envision a full and happy life on your property with some thoughtful staging. Home staging is the practice of arranging furniture and adding decor that makes your house look less like you live there and more like an idealized showroom. Staging your house to give it the most appeal to potential buyers increases the chance of closing a sale and helps you get a better price. All real estate brokers and agents know the importance of staging a house because they see that selling a house is so much easier if the house has been staged properly. If your real estate agent suggests staging as part of getting your house ready to put on the market, here’s what you need to know. The five Cs of home staging are:
1. Curb Appeal
4. Cleaning
This is the first impression that a potential buyer has of the property. Many buyers do a drive-by to look at the house from outside before committing to a showing. Boost your curb appeal by cleaning up the front yard, making sure the lawn is cut and trimming landscape plants. You should also repaint the exterior if needed. Choose neutral tones to appeal to the most buyers.
Your house must be immaculate before opening it up for showings. In addition to a thorough dusting and sweeping of all surfaces, be sure to clean carpets and polish hardwood floors. It’s also crucial to wash windows and make sure all light bulbs function so your house is as bright and cheerful as possible. Hiring a professional cleaning service is a great idea because they’ll take care of al the nooks and crannies you might forget.
2. Clutter
5. Cosmetics
Get rid of all non-essentials by starting your packing process as early as possible and moving boxes into storage. Eliminate any personal items such as family photos and replace them with neutral decor so your buyers can easily imagine themselves living in the space.
Finally, don’t forget the finishing touches. Have a nice fragrance in the home by burning scented candles or by baking cookies just before an open house or scheduled showing. Add a vase of fresh flowers to the dining room table, and be sure to have clean, matching towels hung in the bathrooms.
3. Closet Space Remove 80 percent of the items in your closets. This will make them look more spacious. Leave only the nicest looking clothes hanging in the closets, and make sure floors and shelves are clear.
