n an era of small towns vanishing into sprawling big cities and local shops overpowered by national chains, Vero Beach residents have voted, “not here.”

Several decades ago they passed an ordinance prohibiting buildings over three stories, ensuring that our beaches are not obscured by a wall of highrise development and our lifestyle is relatively stress-free. They voted again against an international airport, to save our small-town atmosphere that is preserved by a bit of inaccessibility. Over 20 years ago, searching the country for the best place to live, my architect husband and I discovered everything we were looking for here in Vero Beach: sunny weather, a friendly community, intellectual stimulation, a thriving art community and the ability to golf all year – an unexpected treasure on Florida’s Atlantic coast. f golf is your passion, you’ll find paradise in Vero Beach. Excellent courses designed by many of the greats are the norm. And the sheer number of courses, just short of 20, as well as enthusiasts for the sport, assures

golfers of a game no matter what their skill level – a singledigit handicap or somewhere north of that. Think of the following designers who have made their mark in Vero Beach and their notable creations elsewhere: Pete Dye’s Whistling Straits and Crooked Stick, Tom Fazio’s Oak Hill and Shadow Creek, Robert Trent Jones Jr.’s Chambers Bay and CordeValle. Then imagine how they and others in their class might translate their signature styles to the Florida landscape. Most are probably apt to follow Tom Fazio’s basic belief that “golf courses should reflect the natural beauty of their environments.” There’s plenty of natural beauty in this coastal community that lies just on the geographic cusp of the tropics. You are as likely to spot huge slash pines and giant oaks with gently flowing Spanish moss as you are the many varieties of palm trees on the landscape and on the local golf courses. Yes, many of Vero Beach’s courses are quite challenging, but don’t just take our word for it. The United States Golf Association rotates qualifying rounds for the U.S. Open on several of its courses. These include Quail Valley Golf Club, designed by Tom Fazio II and Nick Price, and the Arnold Palmer course at the Orchid Island Golf & Beach Club. Then there’s the John’s Island West Course, designed by Tom Fazio, which hosted the 2015 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship and, several years ago, the Society of Seniors Invitational Tournament, whose players are billed as the finest amateur seniors in North America. We could go on, but you get the picture. Challenging though many of these courses are, these golf clubs and their dedicated pros are serious about keeping golfers in the game and enjoying it. So they adhere to the Professional Golf Association’s and USGA’s “Tee it Forward” initiative by providing an expanded number of tees that shave off yardage so players can adjust the length of the course to best align with their average driving distance.
