Women and Young Driver’s Rally
The Women and Under 25 year old drivers rallies were combined and run on a very sunny afternoon on 16 October. 17 cars in total including 4 entered in the young driver's section made for a lovely friendly group, until the field tests started! The look of concentration on the faces when tackling the radio controlled car obstacle course, the athleticism in the hand-bag toss and the skill in the reverse driving test were inspiring. The rally was a reasonably direct route to Rangiora via Kaiapoi and Tuahiwi with only a few looking for Southbrook when the notes said Northbrook (it said something about a brook, I don't know, turn here, it will do!). A few tricky questions on the entry to the Sparks Colonial Museum and it was all done bar the visit to

the many many sheds of incredible history including prams, bikes, tractors, bricks, dentistry, old shop contents, appliances, and I'm sure I saw a kitchen sink somewhere. A wonderful afternoon tea was put on by the Spark family and a parade of hats and handbags from our ladies (and one young gent with a "handbag" containing a tuba!). First prize for the fashion parade was Ngaio Lott. The winner of the Under 25 year old Driver's rally was Taylor White (1973 Austin Mini Clubman), with Matthew Harris in second place (1993 Ford Laser). The winner of the Junior Ladies Trophy was Rebecca Harris (2001 Toyota Corolla), with Daniella Judge in second place (1974 Triumph). The winner of the Women's rally was Leigh Craythorne (1926 Morris Oxford), with Amanda Franklin in second place. Huge thanks to my helpers on the day, Martin and Marcus White, and Liz Comery.
