Acting Chairman’s Report Sadly, we record the passing of our Branch Chairman Ross Butler. Ross was a long-time loyal member of our Branch having recently been awarded his 50-year Award. Not only did he organize several innovative runs and events for the Branch, he also served in an administrative way, being Branch Chairman in 1977 until 1981 and again in 1983 and 1984. He served again on the Branch Committee in 1982. He was elected Chairman once more in 2020 and 2021. He served as Secretary from 2005 until 2010 and was Branch Delegate from 1977 until 1982. In recent years Ross headed up the committee for the Parts Shed and since the earthquake in 2010 saw a tremendous leap forward in the re-organisation of spare parts starting with the new commercial shelving and compartmentation of spares. Our sincere condolences are extended to his wife Debbie and family. He will be missed by us all. 13/14/15 August 2021 was a busy weekend for the branch. We hosted the club’s Executive meeting and AGM at Ryders Hotel and our thanks are recorded to Marilyn McKinlay and Katryna Shaw (and their small team) for all the work they put in on behalf of the branch, to ensure its success. As this year is the 75th anniversary of the club, it was a celebratory weekend (especially for our branch, as the club began here in Christchurch) and a full programme of events was planned to mark this important milestone. On the Friday, a Special Anniversary Run and Shed Raid was organized for visiting members who were passengers in our branch members’ vehicles. The route showcased some of our city’s earthquake recovery and history before heading through the tunnel to Lyttelton, where a collection of well-presented cars and 6
motorcycles was admired by all. Returning “over the hill”, lunch of our own choice in either Lyttelton or Sumner was enjoyed, before returning to rally headquarters, passing more interesting sites (and sights!) which were described and noted on the rally sheet. A supporters’ bus tour of Christchurch city was also organized on Saturday afternoon following the AGM and a 75th Anniversary Dinner was held that evening with many embracing the black and white theme. It was pleasing to see a good number of Canterbury and Banks Peninsula branch members attending the AGM. (Please see Delegate Rod’s meeting report elsewhere.) The Sunday saw a great turn out at the branch Old Cars, Bikes and Coffee Day, where visitors and members alike had the opportunity of viewing a good number of vehicles, supporting the coffee cart and enjoying the delicious BBQ. We were so very fortunate with the weekend – COVID returned (were we surprised?) two days later and many events have had to be put on hold. Watch the branch website for updates. Leigh Note: The Special General meeting advertised for Thursday 2nd September is postponed until 7pm Thursday 7th October.

Secretary and AGM Delegate’s Report Well that was close, one days grace. Covid/19 has raised its ugly head again. Firstly I would like to thank all our members who stepped up to the plate when we really needed you. There are far too many to name, but those of you who were there on the four days know too well who you are and the mess we would have been in had you not volunteered your time and expertise. A special thanks to Marilyn McKinlay and Katryna Shaw for the hours and hours and of heartache and stress you have had to go though. Was it all worth it, well from my perspective I am very sure it was. Will we do it again I’m also sure we will when our time comes around again. Now to the business side of things: FRIDAY EXECUTIVE MEETING The Delegates were asked whose parts shed had a policy on the disposing of unwanted parts.( DO WE?) Letter from Hawkes Bay Branch on the wish for a name change to include “Classic /Car/Vehicle”. Discussion on the definition of the term “Classic”. Motion put that the matter be left to March Executive Meeting. Murray Trounson gave report on National office upgrades and stage one being almost completed. Change to Club Logo: From Canterbury’s perspective I presented a report on the very poor response to the request for feedback on the proposed Logo put forward by the Club’s committee. 47 responses in total counting joint members who sent in two. Sixteen were completely against any change. Thirty one were happy to agree to new Logo with some wishing to make changes to what was put forward. These emails (names excluded) were passed on to one of our representatives on the Clubs Committee. The main points put forward were the words New Zealand /Classic/or Heritage need to be included and the colours need to be changed. After a lengthy discussion it was Moved that any decision on the 8
Logo be left to the March Executive Meeting so the Committee can review if any changes are required. So to sum up if you feel strongly about this matter (for or against) you have till March next year to let the Club committee know in writing or email only. Approval for National Commercial Rally (Wanganui late October 2023) given. AGM On line membership change postal voting. Awards: Presentation to Andrew Anderson on reaching 75yrs Membership. John Goddard Trophy: To Kevin Tracy for contribution of 23 articles over many years to Beaded Wheels. Presidential Award: To Ron Hassell, Banks Peninsular Branch. Other Snippets of General Business. Discussion on the difficultly of the valuation of vehicles which appear to be reducing. Addendum To Secretary’s Report It is with great sadness I report on the passing of Ross. As those of you who would have been aware at our AGM Ross was struggling to be able to see written print and speak, and it was extremely brave of him to still try and complete his tasks as Chairman at this time in his illness. I have only got to know Ross in recent years and through working with him on committee. We always had a very good understanding of one another on the many tasks we had to undertake and he always made the right decisions for the wellbeing of the Branch. It was lovely to see him out at the grounds for OCBC last month even if it was only for a brief time it enabled him to see the Branch operating at its best during the National AGM. My thoughts are with Debbie and family at this very difficult time. May you now rest in peace Ross. Rod From VCC National Office Joint and Junior Members under age 21. We have found some instances where under 21 members living as a dependent child with a main member, had been set up as Junior members, when they met the criteria for Joint members. Joint members attract the lower Joint subscription, instead of the 50% discount for Junior members. If there are Junior members in your Branch, you might want to check if they qualify as Joint members so that they can be invoiced at the correct Joint rate in the next subscriptions invoice run later this year. Junior member status is for under 21 members that do not live with a main member.

Club Captain’s Report Spring is coming! The National AGM went extremely well. Thank you to all of those involved in helping get it off the ground. The weekend was full-on but fun! The Friday group had a trip to Lyttelton to see Geoffrey Edwards’s hidden treasures, which was well received. Our guest speaker came down with Laryngitis the morning of the AGM….. we quickly found someone to open the event and Royce Baker, our high calibre MC, stepped up to fill the gap at the evening dinner hosting 150 people. It was a real pleasure to show off our Club rooms on the Sunday with Old, Bikes, Coffee and Cars followed by a barbecue. Teams on the barbecue and in the kitchen whipped up a feed for approximately 125 hungry mouths. However, the real event was the kitchen clean up… a water pipe burst on the dishwasher and spurted out water over the whole kitchen! Not funny, but hilarious. Things coming up. Women drivers and young drivers rallies 4th September 2021. Awards dinner. Please get your tickets from a committee member or Leigh Craythorne directly: 11th September 2021. Commercial Report Unfortunately Covid intervened before the August commercial noggin, so everyone had to stay home as instructed. The September commercial noggin will (here’s hoping) be as planned for August, hosted by Dave Cooper at 454 South Eyre Rd, on Wednesday 15th September at the usual time. Vintage Convenor’s Report I am pleased to present my first Hub Report. I have been a member of the Canterbury Branch since 1980. My main focus over the pursuing years has been restoring a 1930 Model A Delivery vehicle. I have a running 1930 Deluxe Fordor Model A and a 1966 MGB Roadster. I am a member of the Model A Ford club, for which I have been Club Captain, magazine editor and current committee member. Since joining the committee of the Vintage Car Club Canterbury Branch I have had the luxury to have the help from Lyndsey Saunders and Mark Drury, in organising this year’s Vintage Rally, set for 6th in the my role in the committee, and hope we can attract more members to be active and involved in the Vintage scene. Annual Vintage Rally November 6, 2021 10.30am start at Club Members Roy and Shirley Grainger’s residence 94 Sabys Road, Halswell. (Allow time to view car collection before starting). Lunch Stop at a lovely country Domain west of start. (Toilets and shelter available if weather inclement). After Lunch a short drive to view a small Museum with an interesting large range of eclectic items on display. Drive to the finish at NZ Vintage Machinery Clubs grounds McLean’s Island Road. (Large Display Building housing various Machinery items from the past and a Ladies Memorabilia room to view. Also view a new building housing MV Tuhoe salvaged items and a collection of rare engines). (Toilets and shelter available). Afternoon Tea will be provided at this venue followed by Prize giving and Trophy presentation to lucky winners. Estimated rally distance approximate 60 miles. Veteran Report With the weather starting to warm up again, a couple of veteran cars have already been spotted out and about. Brett O’Rourke brought his 1905 Brush to the OCBC meeting on the AGM weekend Sunday, and Malcolm McGibbon did his weekly grocery shop at the Darfield Four Square in the 1914 Swift a week ago. Other owners are getting their cars ready for the first run of the season later in September. As mentioned last month, the Branch Annual Veteran Rally will be on Sunday 26th September, and planning is well in hand. The finish destination is the Racecourse Hill homestead. The run will start at 10am at the Recreation Centre in Darfield where there is room for trailers if needed. All details are on the entry form. There is going to be an open day the Homestead and our cars will be parked nearby as an added attraction, so with that and some fun field tests, it will be an interesting day. Entry forms were in last month’s Hub on Page 38 and of course are on-line, so fill it in now while you remember. Other club eligible vehicles are welcome too, but won’t be able to take part in the field tests or be eligible for any of the awards. If COVID restrictions are still in place I will contact all those who have registered and advise what alternative arrangements have been made or whether the event has been cancelled. Last month we had a noggin at our place, and had a really good night. Around 20 people attended, and after a good yarn in the shed we all moved inside for supper and enjoyed a couple of veteran-related videos – one of the 2019 London to Brighton run, and another showing the restoration of a 1912 Mitchell. SWAP MEET REPORT Believe it or not, it’s still all systems go for Swap Meet, and the committee is progressing planning on the assumption that we will be back at Level 1 by the planned Swap Meet dates of 7th, 8th, and 9th October. There are still a few sites available for booking, but get in quick and contact Neil Shaskey if you want one. If noggin proceeds this month, we will have the small signs available for collection – if you can take one or more and put them up somewhere in your neighbourhood, it would be a great help. Whilst at Noggin, please check the roster sheets. If your name is already there, please check that your allocated time is still OK, and if it’s not please change your time, or see me if you’ve had a change of plans. If your name is not there, please find a job you would like to do and a time that suits you and add your name. There is nothing arduous or difficult to do, all we require is an hour or so of your time over the whole weekend. At the September and/or October Noggin we will have weekend passes available to purchase. Remember that entry is $5 per day, or you can buy a three-day/ weekend pass (wrist-band) for $10 and just show it at the gate as you come through. The Back-up Plan Because of the uncertainties we’re currently facing because of COVID restrictions, we have devised a back-up plan to ensure we do indeed try to proceed with Swap Meet this year. We have a provisional reserve date of 26th, 27th and 28th November, and we will hold off making a decision as to whether we go to the later date until 2 weeks before the current planned date. Moving it out 6 weeks (if we can't run it in October) gives us the opportunity to reorganise the critical things, like toilets, food vendors, advertising and rosters for the new dates. The only downside is that the date for the Annual Motorcycle Rally will have to be brought forward one week, and will now be held on Saturday 20th November, the day before the Homestead Run. The key message is that there will be a Swap Meet, so keep the dates free, keep sorting your stuff out, and start looking forward to catching up with your mates from out of town again. 9-90s Hi to you all Ken James and Bruce Miles, they did it again. They gave us a new starting point that most of us didn't know about and a fantastic run to our destination through new suburbs and lovely countryside. It couldn't have been better until a lot of us got lost and, I mean, a lot but somehow we managed to get to the destination by following the car in front of us and hoping for the best. The destination was the property of John Ackroyd and what a place to visit. A few years ago we visited John at his previous home. Then he blew us away and this time he bettered his old record. A big thanks to John from all of us for making us so welcome. You made our day. We had 53 cars on the run, a good raffle, and big thanks too, to Fred Carpenter for supplying us with a sound system so we didn't have to speak so loudly. Thanks, also to Ken and Bruce for giving us such a good day. Ken decided to donate the entry fees to Child Cancer Society. September 8: Rex and Wendy Cameron We meet at Halswell New World Supermarket Carpark at 9.55am. They tell me our destination is Ashburton way and that it is a very interesting place. The entry fee is $9.00 a head pre paid. This is in addition to the rally entry fee, $2.00. Please pay before we set off. Please have the correct money. No IOU, No Eftpos and no change will be given. We will arrive there about 12 noon, have lunch and the raffle etc., an introduction about 12.30pm and then you can explore at your own speed and, if you are so inclined, you can stop at Ashfords on the way home. October 13 Ray Maguines Meet at the Dunsandel Community Centre at 9,55am and I have been told you need a full tank and an empty bladder. Looking forward to seeing you all next time. J K and the team

MOTORCYCLE REPORT
The days are getting longer, not long to wait for the warmer weather… and of course, a Covid 19 lockdown gets in the way!!! Grrr! Not too sure what you guys have been doing, but I have heard a wee whisper that if your bike does not have direction indicators AND it is a pre-1978 that was first registered in New Zealand 1980 or later you do need to get a VCC endorsement on your VIC card to show the testing station people. It appears that it was mandatory that all motorcycles registered in New Zealand had to have direction indicators from 1978… Needless to say I have put in an endorsement application for my bikes. Apparently I do not need one for my 1927 Model N as it already has a head & tail light exemption… This is according to the VCC Canterbury Branch VIC officer. Past Events. 1st August – Round the Bays Run. I didn’t go, but apparently there was a reasonably good turnout – some 13 or 15 bikes. Great! Thanks to John for organising! 11th August – Motorcycle Noggin. I clean forgot… how slack is that??? 22nd August – Daffodil Day Run. Sadly, was cancelled due to the Covid lockdown 28th August – Fish & Chip Run – also Cancelled due to Covid lockdown. Becoming a reoccurring theme, isn’t it?? Future Events 8th September – Motorcycle Noggin. At this stage nothing formally organised so will be at Motorcycle Corner or if freezing cold in the Barn. From 7.30 pm. 11th September – Motorcycle Skills Training. Still awaiting for information on this from the organiser, so look out for information to come via the email later on. 19th September – Reliability Trial Event. Meet by the old tennis court 9.45 am for a 10.00 am start, at Cutler Park, McLeans Island. On at the same time as the 20
OCBC coffee morning, so hopefully will provide some entertainment for the club membership at large. Joseph McClintock is organising and running this event. He will be setting up 2 courses for you to test your slow riding skills, and time accuracy skills as well. This type of event is ALL about the skills and accuracy of the rider, and very little to do with speed and power. Between the course runs will be a BBQ lunch, $5 a head for bread, snarlers, onions and tomato sauce – just what a biker needs!! The Classic Trials Club has been invited as well. Certificates will be handed out for meritorious performances. See elsewhere for more details. 25th September – Fish & Chip Run. This time there will be a time and place change as the F&C run is going to Hororata Swap Meet. Meet at the Yaldhurst Pub Carpark 8am; ride direct to Hororata . 13th October – Motorcycle Noggin. 16th October – Girder Fork Rally to Akaroa. The usual overnight event, to give to older girder forked bikes a trundle. 23rd October – Fish & Chip Run. This is Labour Weekend, so numbers might be affected. 27th November – VCC Annual Motorcycle Rally. Planning is under way, so mark this day ion your calendars now!! More details next month. For those events in September (or even later), if they cannot proceed because of future lockdown rules etc. I will advise via the email to all motorcyclists exactly what is going on. CML Motorcycle Reliability Trial
Cutler Park 19th September This event will involve riding around a set course of cones, trees etc at low speed. The winner will be the person who completes two runs at the closest times. This will mean that the winner could be riding a Solex. The first run will be behind the old tennis court and behind the children’s playground. This will enable people at the OCB&C morning to spectate. There will be a barbeque lunch at the motorcycle section. After lunch we will run a similar event behind the road frontage and the trees by the oval. These areas are not used for the Swap Meet. We are trying to encourage younger members

GIRDER RALLY ENTRY FORM 16-17 OCTOBER 2021 The Girder Rally is for bikes pre 1945 or fitted with Girder Forks. Back up available. This years lunch stop is at Duvauchelle Hotel. The lunch must be paid for prior to the day. Indicate numbers for lunch on the entry form. The evening will be based around the Grand Hotel as usual, accommodation up to the individual. Sunday breakfast can be ordered from the Grand Hotel usually if required on arrival but plenty of local cafes around. Sunday stop, and prize giving is at the Tai Tapu Hotel before heading home. OCBC (Old Cars, Bikes and Coffee) Report The August OCBC was included in the itinerary of the National AGM, so it was the biggest OCBC yet with lots of visitors. Well over 100 cars and a few motorcycles turned out in perfect weather, and a couple of new members were signed up. The coffee van was busy all morning, and around 150 people stayed on afterwards for the BBQ lunch with the AGM delegates. The September OCBC will be held on Sunday 19th September, and is now going to be our last opportunity for a fundraising event for the Cancer Society now that we’ve not been able to run the Daffodil Rally. We’re going to make it an informal Show and Shine event, and we’ll collect donations for the Cancer Society as part of the proceedings. For those who have never been before OCBC is an open event held every third Sunday morning of the month in our club grounds, and any car, motorcycle or vehicle enthusiast is welcome to attend. Vehicles can be of any age, nationality or condition - if they are loved and enjoyed they are more than welcome to be put on display. A coffee van is always in attendance, and the Spares Shed and compound is also always open. Daffodil Rally – The Rally That Wasn’t (but there’s still a bit of hope!) Well, by the time you read this, we probably still won’t be out of Lockdown – whether it be Level 3 or 4. And it will be no surprise that both the original planned Daffodil Rally day of 22 nd August and its back-up date of 29 th August have both come and gone, and the Rally hasn’t happened. For the second year in a row! This was extremely disappointing, not just because of all the work I put in organising it, but more so for the Cancer Society, who now stand to miss out on many thousands of dollars in donations that this VCC National Day generates. The good thing is that the rally routes and event plan will not go to waste – they can be re-used next year. I must acknowledge the many members that volunteered their help for the day, and also to the management at the Pak’n’Save Rangiora, and the New Brighton Club, who were particularly helpful and accommodating in allowing us to use their car parks as start locations. But we have a couple of back-up plans. 1) In order not to lose sight of this important fundraiser for the Cancer Society, we now invite all of our members, or anyone with any sort of special interest vehicle (car, motorcycle, trike, commercial) to bring it along to our next Old Cars, Bikes & Coffee (OCBC) event on Sunday 19th September, where we'll hold an informal Show'n Shine event. There we will collect donations for the Cancer Society. For those who have never been before OCBC is an open event held every third Sunday morning of the month in our club grounds, and any car, motorcycle or vehicle enthusiast is welcome to attend. Vehicles can be of any age, nationality or condition—if they are loved and enjoyed they are more than welcome to be put on display. A coffee van is always in attendance, and the Spares Shed and compound (an experience all on its own) is also always open. For the September event we will also have small prizes for the best British, American, European, Japanese and Australian vehicle, and the best motorcycle. 2) Additionally, in between now and 19th September, we are running a fun competition through the VCC Facebook page. All you need to do is take a photo of your vehicle in an outdoor setting at your home address and post it to the VCC NZ Facebook Page: 24

The 2021 Canterbury All British Day will be held on Sunday 17th October. The start point will be the coffee morning at our Vintage Car Club grounds on McLeans Island Road, where vehicles will need to assemble between 8.30am and 10.00 am. At 10.00 all British vehicles will depart on a scenic run which will take participants to the Amberley Rock’n’wheels event in the Amberley domain. Normally we would go to a venue of our own, but this year the Amberley Rock’n’wheels event has been postponed from 4th September due to COVID restrictions. This has clashed with the date reserved for the All British Day. Because the Amberley event is attended by a large number of British vehicles we will combine with that event for this year. The entry fee will still be $10.00 per vehicle which will admit the vehicle, the driver and one passenger. Any extra passengers will be $5.00. This will be collected when you arrive at Amberley Domain. All proceeds go to the Amberley Lions club. Please bring a picnic lunch, or food may be purchased at Domain. A coffee van will be operating at the VCC grounds at the start point from 8.30am. The event is open to British vehicles of all ages (veteran to modern) and all types motorcycles, cars and trucks. Please note that if the event is cancelled due to COVID restrictions or for any other reason, the All British Day run will be cancelled too. AUGUST 2021 RUN “What a difference a day makes”, so said the 1975 hit song by Esther Phillips. Well that certainly was the case on Tuesday 10th August the day that the VOG’s once again hit the roads (and bike tracks) for their season of fun & frivolity – some seasoned motorcyclists might think what’s this guy on? The day certainly was superb after the shocking weather we had on the Monday. Barry Browning organised our run this time starting from he and Rhonda’s home on Old North Road Kaiapoi and heading out along some quiet roads towards cycle tracks that VOG 1 never knew existed in the Kaiapoi area. It wasn’t until we got some 5k’s from the starting grid that we discovered one of our riders Wayne Gath had gone missing – eek where’s he gone, surely he’s not lost already – yes he was !! Dave Backhouse did some back tracking and discovered Wayne heading along the wrong side of the Cam River. Turns out Wayne couldn’t start his trusty stead right at the starting grid and by the time the little “tart” fired up we had all disappeared into the distance. Oh well all turned out well in the end so off we headed again but not for long. This time Gary Thompson on his very “quick” ‘Solex came to a sudden stop – oops the fuel tank was empty. The fuel economy of 1ml/100km shrinks when you tune these beasts to the utmost. So a quick fix of another litre in the tank and we were on the way again heading off to our destination in the Ohoka area to view a collection of American veteran vehicles at Kelvin Finlay’s huge shed situated on his property sited in a lovely sunny area. What an amazing collection Kelvin has there, some quite rare examples of vehicles we probably never saw on our roads back in those days of the early 1900’s I won’t even start to describe what we viewed, all I can say is “wow”.

On the road again (as Willie Nelson sang) and we now headed off to our lunch stop at the Plough Hotel in Rangiora via some long quiet straight country roads. What more can one ask for “ the purr of the little 50cc engine in your ears the sun shining down upon you and the rural smells up your nostrils” heaven on 2 wheels. A very pleasant lunch stop it was with Denise McKenzie joining us to have a catch up with “her boys” after she had done backup all those times for us before Alister’s passing. Great to see you Denise. The afternoon run was short and sweet without any mishaps travelling along the Passchendaele Bike Trail that follows Lineside Road all the way back to Kaiapoi and the return to Barry & Rhonda’s to complete a “long day out” . The Hororata Highland Games 6th November VCC Display for all Vehicles up to P60V
The Hororata Highland Games are a fantastic day out and are regarded by many as the best Highland Games outside of Scotland. If you haven’t been before then now’s your chance. Once again this year, the VCC has been afforded the opportunity to display vehicles at the event. Due to space limitations and a request from the HG organisers, all vehicles up to (but not including) P60 and later are able to take part. The day is especially suitable for Veteran vehicles. The start this year will be at 10:00am at the Cenotaph 1.5km north of Hororata (cnr Hororata Road & Downs Road) where the cars and motorcycles will be lined up in order of age ready for the Grand Parade entrance at 10:30am. Once there, all vehicles will do a parade lap and then be parked up for display. You will then be free to participate in and enjoy a fantastic day out. Entertainment includes the various Highlands events, great music for all tastes and various vendors of food and beverages including whiskey tasting. Bring your picnic lunch or patronise the food stall holders A special entrance price has been arranged and venue entrance wrist bands will be part of the rally pack. The special entry price (Driver and vehicle $20 plus $12 per additional passengers) is only available to rally entrants and their passengers. These wrist bands will not be accepted at any of the public entrance gates. (Public entry on the day is $30.00pp). Also, your entry means your commitment to remain on display until 4:00pm. No exceptions, at the insistence of the HG organisers. Feel free to wear Scottish regalia and to dress your vehicle up for the occasion. It is a wonderful opportunity to promote our club and display our vehicles to the large number of spectators (nearly 10,000 last year) that attend the games, and enjoy the event ourselves. For those with early veterans there is space for trailer parking at the Hororata Cenotaph. Get your entry in early because the numbers will be limited.
Please note that due to a clash of dates this year this event is on the same day as the Annual Vintage Rally, which will be run completely separately. Vintage vehicles are requested to support the Vintage Rally – this will be fixed next year and going forward. Anyone requiring further information please contact me. Vehicle Auction Information From Gore Branch Many VCC members will have known, or known of, Robin Dickson of Pukerau, Southland. Robin amassed a considerable collection of vintage, veteran and other VCC category cars and the Gore branch is assisting with the auctioning of the collection.
