Homeschooling:

Mission, Model, Method

C

onverging at a McAllen church, RGV parents grappled with the prospect of homeschooling, the Classical Christian Model, and the art of true rhetoric. After three days of education, equipping, and encouragement, parents left the Annual Classical Conversations free Parent Practicum feeling more empowered to educate their children at home. That day, many parents chose to take complete responsibility of their children’s education and have enrolled in one of the three Classical Conversations campuses for this fall. Classical Conversations (CC) is an international organization with 65,000 students. 6,200 of those students reside in Texas. The RGV has campuses in McAllen, Edinburg, and Brownsville. These campuses exist to provide a scaffold and community for parents who want to homeschool utilizing the classical Christian model (based on the trivium—grammar, dialectic/logic, rhetoric) from the perspective of a Biblical, Christ-centered worldview. CC goes to great lengths to explain they are not a school. Among the many reasons parents cite as their reasons for joining CC, the aspects of community, socialization, and accountability top the list. In addition, trained parent Directors and Tutors aid parents each week in their homeschooling efforts. CC also provides assistance for their parent in the way of standardized testing and transcripts. In addition, CC is involved in their local communities, regularly inviting leaders to events such as their Excellence in Education presentations. A quick internet search reveals that homeschoolers number in the millions. The benefits of this option are extensive. Parents have expressed academic, social, religious, and political reasons for homeschooling. Other reasons included a desire for a more individualized approached and a more flexible learning schedule. More and more parents are discovering the joys and benefits of homeschooling and find themselves agreeing with Andrew Kern of the CiRCE Institute, that the child is a “soul

to be nurtured, not a product to be measured.” Homeschooling parents want to take the time to make sure that their children are not only schooled, but also educated. For anyone who is interested, they can look at the Classical Conversations alumni statistics on our local website: www.mcallenhomeschool.com Classical Conversations is committed to helping parents raise citizen-leaders who have a Biblical, Christ-centered worldview. “And these words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up.” Deuteronomy 6:6-8

Scripture gives the responsibility to educating children to the parent. It is the parent’s role to “Train up a child in the way he should go. Even when he is old he will not depart from it” Proverbs 22:6. Every year parents feel the tug of these scriptures as they ponder how they can fulfill them, while their children are away from them for 30-40 hours a week. They are faced with the heart-wrenching reality that whoever is spending the most time with the child is the one training him. Perhaps you have already come to the conclu-

sion that you want to, or need to, homeschool, and you are no longer asking “Why should I homeschool?” Perhaps you are desperately wondering “How do I homeschool? What is the best method or philosophy? What does it look like?” “What about college, and transcripts?” These questions and many more were addressed last month at the Classical Conversations free three-day Parent Practicum. If you missed the Parent Practicum, you can still get your questions answered by contacting one of the CC Directors, or attending and Information Meeting. What others are saying about CC Parent Practicum and homeschooling: “As a homeschool mom of the past 17 years I was delighted to see a group of homeschool families providing a true classical education for their children. It gave me such hope for the future to know that these children are developing the skills that will enable them to think deeply, communicate thought in a meaningful way, and develop a true and genuine love for learning that will last a lifetime. These children will be future leaders and stand in a world that is crying for direction. What most impressed me though was the sweet spirit exhibited between the parents and children involved in this group. I saw Christ’s love truly acted out in a tangible way and an incredible support and encouragement demonstrated between the members and the newcomers. Their passion in pursuit of homeschooling was evident! I left edified, encouraged, and inspired—Classical Conversations is a blessing to not only those within their group, but also homeschoolers in general and the community as a whole.”—Leslie Crown, three-day Practicum attendee “I was inspired by the wonderful, like-minded families that are on the same journey as we are….[they are] on a mission to teach their children to love God, life, and learning….I chose to homeschool because I wanted to see my family go from surviving to thriving….I wasn’t sure how I was going to be able to teach four different aged kids….however, after our CC Practicum I feel equipped and now I can tell people

that it is possible.” – Velma Landrum, new CC participant Classical Conversations mission is to Know God and to Make Him known, its model is to pair the lost tools of learning, the classical model, with a Biblical worldview, and its method is to equip parents and encourage students. To maintain the integrity and quality of our programs, we purposefully limit our class size. Communities are filling up.

Should I Build?

Is this the Best for Me? You won’t know if building a new home is your best option unless you talk to an unbiased mortgage professional. By gathering all your information, we will determine if building is your best choice. Very often potential Home Buyers will be told by a builder to use his choice of a mortgage company. This may not be the wisest thing to do. An unbiased mortgage company does not have a commitment to any builder and will not be influenced to push you into a construction loan if it is not the best option.

If you would like more information on homeschooling, CC, and our local communities, please contact one of our Directors or visit the CC Event Calendar to see when our next Information Meetings are.

In 2 Timothy 2:22 we read, “Pursue righteous living, faithfulness, love, and peace. Enjoy the companionship of those who call on the Lord with pure hearts” (NLT). A new dress for Ellise By Milton Gonzalez

I

once read a story about a sweet little girl named Ellise. Her father had widowed when

she was just a baby. Nine years had gone by and dad had done a great job at raising her. Life wasn’t easy and money was scarce yet he managed to provide for her every need. Dad was always there, he was a man of his word and he never failed his sweet little girl. One Saturday afternoon they both went for a walk downtown. They held hands as they strolled down the shopping strip while gazing into the store fronts. Ellise’s eyes lit up the moment she saw a beautiful white dress on a mannequin. Her father quickly noticed her interest in the item and inquired if she would be interested in having it. Without hesitation and with joy exuding her every pour she replied YES!. Her father told her they would have to come back the following week after payday. She hopped, skipped and jumped her way back home.

Heavenly Father who never fails us and always keeps His promises. Ellise’s story is a perfect example of childlike faith (Matt 18:3), the kind of faith that we should exemplify at all times regardless of the circumstances that may surround us. Whatever you are believing for in your life, if God has made us a promise through His Word then you must stand firm and believe that He will come through. Our Father desires to see us progressing, moving forward, overcoming, walking in victory, being consecrated, living holy, walking in deliverance and prospering. However, the enemy of our soul desires to see us falling, failing, getting sick, depressed, defeated, being poor and living in sheer bondage.

If you constantly envision yourself failing you will never succeed, envision yourself sick and I assure you that you will never walk in complete healing. Your recurring negative thoughts position yourself for defeat and it is at that moment when you have become your greatest detriment. The reason some people are faltering and failing “Elisha never gave up, he never gave right now is they have a in, he did not become complacent visualization of themselves and get used to the drought. He arose that does not coincide with up in faith and declared the promises the Word of God. And what of the Lord.” you visualize in your spirit will materialize in due her and the rest of season.

The following Monday Ellise showed up to school wearing the same torn and tattered dress she had been wearing for a very long time. However this time there was something different about the children noticed. They couldn’t comprehend what the source of her joy was. She told them she was excited to have a new dress. Her classmates laughed and ridiculed her since all they saw was the same old torn dress. Their words didn’t put her down or destroy her hope. She knew in her heart that her daddy wouldn’t fail and come next Monday she would be wearing a brand new dress…and that she did. That’s what I call faith.

Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see - Hebrews 11:1 I have oftentimes heard people say that faith is blind and I beg to differ. Faith isn’t blind when you put your trust in the One True God - The

In 1 Kings we read about the prophet Elijah sending his servant to inform the king to eat and drink and get ready for an abundance of rain was soon to fall. It had been 3 and half years since it had rained last and everything around them had dried up and withered. There were absolutely no signs of rain. His only assurance…God’s promise. He stood firm and believed. His faith was totally vested in God. If He said it… He will do it. I can’t see it, I can’t hear it, I can’t sense it at all BUT I know there is an abundance of rain. He sent his servant to the hills to see if there were any signs. Time and time again he came back with depressing news. On the seventh time he came back and informed Elijah that

12  valleychristianmagazine.com   August 2014

there was a cloud the size of a man’s hand. Elijah continued to believe and trust in the Lord’s promises. Though the outward signs were embryonic he knew in his heart that God would never fail him. He shut out the external voices and prayed and sure enough… IT POURED! God answered. Elisha never gave up, he never gave in, he did not become complacent and get used to the drought. He arose up in faith and declared the promises of the Lord. He never envisioned a minuscule cloud, he focused on the abundant clouds, the pouring rains, he didn’t listen to the voices of doubt, he tuned in to the spirit and filled himself with faith. Elisha experienced breakthrough because he didn’t give up. He fought the good fight. People of great faith: 1. see and hear what the world cannot. 2. press on even when there is no sign of change. 3. endure even when the evidence is minute. 4. expect great miracles. 5. envision breakthrough even when the answer seems weak. Perhaps you have been tempted to give up and give in because you gotten tired of waiting for your miracle. I want to encourage you to rise up, fill yourself with faith, position yourself and get ready for your breakthrough. The abundance of rain is on its way Shalom, Milton

La Ilusión Corría

Luis Palau

Yo pido misericordia. --Tu hijo no merece misericordia, mujer--replicó Napoleón.

FLASH FLOOD WARNING James MacDonald

“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior” (Isaiah 43:2–3a, ESV). In Isaiah’s description, the waters symbolize a trial. Some trials can be likened to walking through a valley, while others can feel like facing a flash flood in that valley. The water level rises rapidly. Deep waters assail, currents swirling, and you may fear going under. Notice it’s when this happens, not if. “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you.” The waters will come, but you won’t be by yourself. Though the waters get deep, it will not overwhelm you. The greatest treasure in this verse is the promise of His presence. He is with you in three places: through the waters, the rivers, and the fire. God leads us into difficult circumstances, but He brings us through them. We emerge on the other side. Too often we’re searching for ways around deep waters and dangerous fires rather than through them. Have you ever experienced this? Have you tried to avoid a trial, only to have it move directly in front of you again? God is checking you, heading you off at the pass. He wants you to go through it. Some people go into trials but never come out. Not us! God leads us into difficulties and brings us through them. It’s tempting to think, I can’t take much more of this! I’ve been treading water for so long. I’m tired and afraid I might sink. Hear this: Whatever you’re facing, you will get through it. You will not drown or be swept away. Yes, the water will feel deep, the fire will feel hot, but it won’t be too deep, too hot, or last too long.

Sometimes the Bible offers the best illustrations of its own message. Remember Daniel’s three friends, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, featured in Daniel 3? They stood for God in a very bleak time. They refused to bow and worship the golden image that the cranky, wicked King Nebuchadnezzar set up of himself. While they showed respect toward the king, they were unbending in their ultimate allegiance to God. The consequence? Nebuchadnezzar was furious and commanded that they “be cast into a burning fiery furnace. And who is the god who will deliver you out of my hands” (Daniel 3:15)? When they responded with calm confidence in God’s ability to deliver them, Nebuchadnezzar was enraged all the more. “Filled with fury . . . he ordered the furnace heated seven times more than it was usually heated” (3:19). Soldiers bound the three friends, cast them into the fiery furnace, and were “Too often we’re themselves burned searching for ways to death. God could around deep waters have stopped those and dangerous fires murderers from rather than through going forward with them.” the king’s order, but He didn’t. Instead of making a way around, He made a way through. “Then King Nebuchadnezzar was astonished and rose up in haste. He declared to his counselors, ‘Did we not cast three men bound into the fire? . . . But I see four men unbound, walking in the midst of the fire, and they are not hurt; and the appearance of the fourth is like a son of the gods’” (3:24–25). What an awesome scene! Jesus Christ, the pre-incarnate second person of the Trinity, was in the fire with them—just as He had promised. That promise holds for you too. At this moment, God is watching your life, and at some point in this trial, He will say, “Enough.” You don’t need to falter. God’s hand is on the thermostat

by

of your trial; the fire will not get too hot. He is watching the depth gauge of your flood; the waters will not get too deep. God actively controls the severity of everything you face. And He is with you through it.

Journal When in your life have you faced deep waters or scorching fires—trials that feel overwhelming to you? As you meditate on God’s promises in Isaiah 43, what fills your heart with faith?

Pray Lord God, I am Yours. When I pass through the flood waters, You will not let me drown. When the rivers rage, they won’t drag me under. When I walk through the fire, I will not be burned—because You are with me. God, I choose to believe this precious truth, and I preach it to my own weary heart. God, You are with me, so I will keep going. I hold onto You and Your Word. I will not avoid or escape my trial, but by faith and with You, I will go through it and emerge whole on the other side. Please use the trials in my life for my good and for Your glory. To the glory of Your Son alone, King Jesus, I pray, amen.

in the community willing to take on the challenge to love and nurture these children. The Rio Grande Children’s Home in Mission, Texas, recently transitioned from a residential facility to foster care group homes. We are seeking families with big hearts and Christ-centered values to foster our children at the Rio Grande Children’s Group Home. Licensed foster families living in the homes will provide a loving, Christian atmosphere for children and sibling groups in an effort to keep families together. They are able to offer the emotional, spiritual and educational support that these children need to grow in their sense of self-worth and to discover their special purpose in life. We are also able to license families for foster care in their own homes in the community and are seeking families for our community foster care program as well. Our staff is dedicated to prepare each family for their foster journey ahead and to provide them with support before, during and after the foster care process. We are so excited about our new programs in the Rio Grande Valley. This is an awesome ministry for families to serve vulnerable children who have suffered abuse and neglect. As James 1:27 states, “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress.” For more information on foster care in the Rio Grande Valley, please call 956-585-4847 or attend one of our Be a Family information meetings in Mission (second Thursday of every month) or Harlingen (fourth Thursday of every month). Try

to picture this…a middle aged woman running and singing at the top of her lungs-off key but enthusiastic. Singing as if there is no one around and oblivious to the stares and giggles from strangers. If you run or drive past 2nd street you may have caught a glimpse of me. I’ve said before that running is a stress reliever, a time for reflection and a lot of times it’s where I write my articles. So lately I’ve been singing and running to the song “Let it Go” from the Disney Movie “Frozen”. It’s an academy award winning song that appeals to both young and old as well as females and apparently males too!(read July VCM issue). My kids won’t let me play it in the car because they know I can’t control myself!

How many of us have lived in fear? Afraid of failure or feeling ashamed for past mistakes? Or how many of us hold on to hurts from the past? Not being able to move forward because we relive the words or actions that hurt us deeply. Maybe you live in condemnation for your own mistakes and allow that to define you. Failed marriage, unexpected loss of loved one, lost job, broken friendships and traumatic childhoods are all things that can keep us tied to the past. How many of us strive to be that perfect girl? The cautious one who subdues her true feelings so as not to upset others. Always afraid that if they really knew you they wouldn’t like you. Or you stop trying because you have failed in

let the past dictate your present and poison your future? Everyone deals with disappointments on this earth. It is guaranteed. I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart because I have overcome the world John 16:33 When I sing this song it reminds me to live in the present by choosing to forget the hurts, disappointments, mistakes and fears. I don’t have to be perfect I just need to be me! God created me and forgives me daily. I need to choose to do that for others and for myself. I am not defined by my mistakes nor is anyone else. I need to stop being afraid of failure and allow myself to feel joy and freedom. Who doesn’t want to feel free?

Lessons from a Disney Princess…..

So for those of you who haven’t seen the movie it’s about a princess who has had to hide this magical power for fear that she would be shunned or ostracized. She had to control her emotions, her true feelings so as not to make others uncomfortable. She had to play the part of a perfect girl.

“The wind is howling like this swirling storm inside couldn’t keep it in, heaven knows I tried. Don’t let them in; don’t let them see Be the good girl you always have to be. Conceal don’t feel, don’t let them know. Well now they know! Let it go, let it go, can’t hold it back anymore let it go, let it go. Turn away and slam the door I don’t care what they’re going to say. Let the storm rage on. The cold never bothered me anyways. At a point in the movie she does lose it and everyone knows her secret. She flees and isolates herself. She protects herself from getting feelings hurt or being judged by living alone. She puts up walls of ice to separate herself from others. The closer someone would get to her the higher and more intricate became the walls. Sound familiar? The great thing that comes during this time is she experiences a new sense of freedom. She starts to see the beauty in her abilities without fear of what others will say. “It’s funny how some distance makes everything seem small And the fears that once controlled me can’t get to me at all It’s time to see what I can do to test the limits and break through NO right, no wrong, no rules for me I’m free! Let it go let it go I am one with the wind and sky Let it go, let it go You’ll never see me cry Here I stand and here I’ll stay Let the storm rage on… I’m never going back the past is in the past

past whether it be at work, home or with relationships. So what do we do? We put up walls and keep others away. It may not be walls of ice but the heart does harden to protect itself. Maybe you can identify with the princess in the story….I know I can which is why I love this song! As odd as it seems this song, this Princess, this fairy tale reminds me of the promises of Christ. There is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Romans8:1 God wants us to feel free. He wants us to let go of the past and stop living in condemnation. He

“God wants us to feel free. He wants us to let go of the past and stop living in condemnation.”

has given us each special abilities to prosper us and has given us purpose. These fears, disappointments, hiding our true selves because of past hurts or mistakes are the very things that keep us from God’s best. So what’s the answer? It’s a choice you have to make….you have to “let it go”. Forget the former things do not dwell on the past. Isaiah 43:18. What is keeping you from experiencing God’s freedom? Do you need to forgive someone? Do you need to forgive yourself? Are you going to

24  valleychristianmagazine.com   August 2014

“Let it go Let it go and I’ll rise like the break of dawn. Let it go Let it Go! That perfect girl is gone Here I stand in the light of day Let the storm rage on!

The princess embraces her freedom and refuses to hide her gifts. She lets go of the illusion of being perfect. She doesn’t doubt herself. She doesn’t hold back and she eventually is loved by those that misjudged her. Her walls come down and what she used to separate herself from others in the end redeems her. Doesn’t that sound wonderful? Good news is that like that fairy tale you can have your happily ever after by choosing to LET IT GO! Stop thinking you’re not good enough because of your past. Bring the walls down and allow Christ to fill your heart. You had a bad relationship or betrayed by friendship, God will bring new ones into your life. That can’t happen unless you open yourself up to new beginnings. Let people see the real you, let them see the gifts that God has bestowed on you. Choose to live in the present and don’t look back only forward. Stop being afraid of failure. Failing is just one step closer to succeeding. So if you see me running and singing at the top of my lungs just know that I’m not crazy! I’m just happy to be free from my past. It’s a lesson from a Disney Princess that reinforces what Christ continues to do for me. Let it go Princess!

The Day I Lost My Smile

“She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.”.”

By Lysa TerKeurst

Proverbs 31:25

Lysa TerKeurst is a New York Times best selling author and speaker who helps everyday women live an adventure of faith through following Jesus Christ. As president of Proverbs 31 Ministries, Lysa has lead thousands over the past 15 years to help make their walk with God an invigorating journey. looked at my schedule and an overwhelming sense of dread started creeping into my heart. “What’s wrong with me? Why am I always running late, running behind, and running after my people who all seem to compound this issue?”

I

Because time refused to stand still while I pondered, it was necessary to jump right into task mode. There were lunches to pack, permission forms to sign, and tangles that needed gathering up into ponytails. I put one foot in front of the other and kicked into automatic, mentally crossing off one thing after another on my morning routine checklist. I gathered up backpacks and lunchboxes and started announcing from the front door that we had to leave right this minute. And then I said it again. And then I yelled it in a tone that finally got my kids to appear. I quickly checked to make sure we didn’t repeat yesterday’s mistake of letting one leave with no shoes on. Then I marched out of the house while tossing out a stern reminder to please shut the door quickly so the dog didn’t get out.

rare moment of silence, they took it without protest.

Together, we listed reasons to be so very thankful.

We pulled into the carpool line at school and I stared at the long line of cars ahead of me. I imagined all the wonderful smiling mothers who were doing this better than me. They probably had organized systems for packing lunches the night before and making sure their kids kept up with their shoes. They probably did family devotions each morning, ate breakfast at the table, and sang songs all the way to school.

Together, we found strength.

I compared all that to the realities of my morning and came to one heart-sinking conclusion: “I stink at this.” Almost at that exact moment my phone buzzed with a text message from a friend: “I had a really hard morning with my kids today. I’d love to have coffee some time and learn how you do it all so well.”

“If you are busy rowing the boat, you won’t have time to rock it.”

But the dog did get out. As I slipped the car in drive, the dog darted right out in front of me causing me to simultaneously slam on the brakes and spill both cups of orange juice I had gingerly perched between my purse and the little stacks of toast. I jumped out to usher the dog back into the house and let hot tears just have their way. The green numbers of the dashboard clock seemed to simultaneously mock and remind me I had no time to sit and cry it all out. I handed my kids their soggy toast and in a

I couldn’t believe it. I half sighed and half chuckled at the irony. I turned around to my kids in the back and said, “Hey guys, I’m really sorry Mommy was such a grump this morning. I think I misplaced my smile. So I just want you to know while you’re at school today I’m going to do everything I can to find it.” After I dropped them off, I called that friend and told her what a gift it was to get her text. I shared with her. She shared with me. Together, we brainstormed better ways to prepare for these morning pitfalls we both kept finding ourselves in. Together, we gave ourselves the permission to admit how hard motherhood can sometimes be and that it’s okay to feel caught off guard by the endless demands.

26  valleychristianmagazine.com   August 2014

Together, we regained our sense of dignity. And it wasn’t too long until we both found ourselves laughing together. It reminds me Proverbs 31:25, “She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.” But sometimes it takes a friend to bring us back to the place where we can live this verse. We need each other. The key word that day I processed life with my friend and gained a better perspective was, “together.” It’s such a powerful word and the exact reason I wrote this post today. You are not alone. Oh, how easy it is to lose our smiles and forget to laugh at the craziness of our lives. I need reminders, like the truth of Proverbs 31:25 and that sweet time spent with my friend. I imagine, though the circumstances might be different for you, you know that place where I was. And maybe you need a reminder to laugh too. We all have times where we feel like failures. We feel like others are doing life so much better. We feel so very alone in our struggles and issues and chaotic emotions. And we look up one day and feel like it was a lifetime ago since we laughed. So, I slip this little encouragement into your life and whisper, you’re not alone. You’re doing this so much better than you think you are. God has entrusted you with your life, your loved ones, your unique challenges because you are perfectly equipped for it all. Just don’t lose your smile. And if you run into me today looking a little worn out, might you remind me of this as well?

What Is The Difference Between Being Baptized In Water And Being Baptized In The Holy Spirit? By Carey Kinsolving & Friends

Artwork by Daniel Carr

“T

he water does not do anything except get you wet,” says Matt, 8. “When you get baptized in the Holy Spirit, you get cleansed by God, and he will come into our hearts. Getting baptized means you’re telling the whole world that God has come into your heart.” On the baptism of the Holy Spirit, Bible scholar JC Ryle wrote: “It consists of the implanting of grace into the inward man. It is the same thing with the new birth. It is a baptism, not of the body, but of the heart. It is well to be baptized into the visible Church; but it is far better to be baptized into that Church which is made up of true believers.”

from the Bible that salvation is a free gift that can only be received by faith alone in Christ alone (Ephesians 2:8-9). In Old Testament times, the Holy Spirit came upon a few believers for special tasks. The prophet Joel foresaw a time when God would pour out his Spirit on all believers (Joel 2:2829). Jesus predicted that his disciples would receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit “not many days from now” (Acts 1:5). When the disciples received the Spirit’s baptism, they began to praise God in foreign languages they had not learned. Jews from foreign countries who had gathered at Jerusalem for the Pentecost feast understood the disciples in their own languages.

Spirit is not an experience to be sought, but a truth to be believed. Even though every Christian has been baptized by the Holy Spirit into union with Christ, not all are enjoying the fellowship with Christ that comes from being filled with the Spirit. Memorize this truth: “And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit” (Ephesians 5:18). Ask this question: Have you been filled or controlled by God’s Spirit today?

“The baptism of the Holy

“The difference is when you get baptized in water, it is a symbol of being purified by God,” says Caleb, 8. “When you get baptized by the Holy Spirit, God has brought you into his kingdom.”

Spirit is an historic event that ushered in a new age.”

As one who received baptism by immersion as a professing Christian who was trying to work his way to heaven, I can affirm that being baptized by the Holy Spirit into the body of Christ is far better. At my first water baptism, I mistakenly thought that salvation was Christ plus my dedication. I thought that salvation was a joint venture. Christ would do part, and I would do part. As I stood in the church, wet from water baptism but confused from the mixed message, a girl sensed my bewilderment. She invited me to another meeting where a pastor showed me

In his sermon, the Apostle Peter said this was the fulfillment of what the prophet Joel predicted. The time had come when God would pour out his Holy Spirit upon all believers. About 3,000 Jews trusted Christ as their savior that day and were baptized in water (Acts 2). The baptism of the Holy Spirit is an historic event that ushered in a new age. It occurred for the Jews on the day of Pentecost, but came later for Gentiles (non-Jews). The Apostle Peter took the gospel to the house of a Gentile named Cornelius. Like the Jews at Pentecost, the Holy Spirit came upon them. They spoke in foreign languages and were baptized in water (Acts 10-11:18). Think about this: The baptism of the Holy

Family Force 5

Time Stand Still “All the tracks on this album have such energy you can not help but really enjoy them” This 15 track collection is more about the album as a whole than any individual track. Saying that, Time Stands Still is a great pop/dance track, Walk On Water has some great vocals and a very catchy melody. lternative Pop/Rock band Family Force 5 are releasing their first studio album in three years, titled ‘Time Stands Still’. Sometimes when you hear an album, you just know, and with this release the moment I pressed play, I knew this was going to be amazing! The album thumps, bursts and smashes into

life with Sweep The Leg. From the moment the rock/dance sounds enter the listener’s ear it is something else! The album will confirm to you that Christian music is not all about acoustic guitars and nice piano notes. Christian music can be gritty, modern, creative and exciting. This album has the kind of songs you can play in the car to your friends without embarrassment or putting them off.

All the tracks on this album have such energy you can not help but really enjoy them, if this kind of in-your-face dance/ rock music is your thing that is! As I said, this was an instant classic for me from the moment I heard it, and as I continued to listen to the whole album it just got better, more interesting, more crazy and the energy level never stopped. If you want something very different to Hillsong or Bethel then have a listen to this, you might just enjoy getting those dance shoes on.

A

re you man enough? That is a question that threatens men, at least those of us who are willing to be honest. There are many things we men are confident about but we are unsure, if not terrified by what really matters deep down in our souls. In, The Silence of Adam (Re-titled, “Men of Courage”), Larry, with profound insight, takes us through unattractive but unavoidable darkness and then out into wonderful, God-provided light that lightens the path toward a strong, God-honoring manhood. Co-authors Don Hudson and Al Andrews join Larry in exploring what is seriously wrong and what is vitally missing in so many of us men. They contrast how unmanly men and manly men deal with inevitable darkness and chaos of our fallen existence. Interestingly, men are called to remember; remember God’s words and God’s works. That is, throughout history and our personal history as well, God has been faithfully communicating and working out His redemption/salvation plan for His people. Men are called to remember and retell those God-asmain-character stories. This remembering and retelling of God-involved stories is missing so much of the time. And instead, men relate out of neediness or toughness, neither one of which demonstrates a manly man; an authentic man. Those around

and closest, (wife, sons and daughters, co-workers, etc.), to men who refuse to remember and tell God’s story, experience them as needy or tough. The result is that so many experience loneliness and relational destruction after living in relationship with such men. But Larry goes on to teach that what is needed and available is personal knowledge of God. But this knowledge of God involves, “…a passion for God that continually transforms the way we relate to others, it makes us willing to postpone personal comfort till a later day. This godliness stirs a desire to know Christ that is stronger than every other desire, and it shows us that our greatest enemy is ourselves. Becoming like Christ becomes our consuming ambition.” (p. 168). In short, this book is not about our happiness, our success as measured by the world or even ourselves but rather about becoming men that reflect the wondrous charBook acter of God. This, of course, is imeview R possible without an ever deepening by knowledge of God who has provided everything we need for life and godliness, (2Peter 1:3).

Can Change the World

, by popular blogger Nish Weiseth, is a book about the power of telling our own stories and hearing those of others to change hearts, build bridges, advocate for good, make disciples with grace, and proclaim God’s kingdom on Earth today. Nish Weiseth exhorts today’s Christians to follow Jesus’ example by using story

Of the several books I have read that focus on men, this one, by far, convicts, challenges, moves and encourages me the most. I have gone over this book in our church men’s breakfast twice. Each of my three sons has received a copy at his 15th birthday. And, of course, I highly recommend it as a discipling tool.

Larry points out that as men passionately seek God, they will become godly fathers who communicate to their sons, the difficult Christian

life that is to speak words of life into darkness and chaos, “It can be done; You’re not alone and I believe in you.” (p. 147). But men who passionately seek God also become good brothers. They are able to share deep secrets with a friend which surprising to most actually encourages the “brothers,” walk together. As they walk together they “…will look into the dark, terrifying confusion of life…will seek to know God and to realize the vision he has for our lives…will speak into the dark reality of this world, on his [Christ’s] behalf.” (p. 165).

as a vehicle for change. After all, Jesus was a master storyteller. He frequently and effectively used the art of storytelling to communicate deep truths about God, humanity, love, and eternity to a culture on the brink. His stories defied social norms, revealed God’s Kingdom, and fiercely advocated for the least of these.

With examples from Scripture as the foundation, Speak is a call for grace, openness, and vulnerability within the evangelical church. Nish Weiseth encourages those in the Body of Christ to know their own story of transformation and redemption—and to use those stories as a catalyst for change at both a personal and global level.

Who Do You Want To Hang Out With? Dear Dave, I have job offers from two tech companies. One is in San Antonio and pays $55,000 a year, while the other is in Silicon Valley making $100,000 a year. My friends are advising me to move to California, but I feel like I’d have more money in my budget if I moved to San Antonio. What do you think? Aaron Dear Aaron, The good news about Silicon Valley is you’d be around a ton of really smart people in your industry. I mean, it’s the epicenter of the tech world, right? You’ll learn a ton and have lots of opportunities, so there’s definitely an upside. The problem is that the Silicon Valley area is one of the most expensive places to live in the entire country. The real estate prices and cost of living are ridiculous! Still, if it weren’t for the cost of living argument, it would be a no-brainer for me. Then, it wouldn’t really be so much about the income and prices as it would be about the career opportunity. Still, you have to consider the economic factors involved here. With that in mind, it’s not an exaggeration to say you might actually put more money in your pocket at $55,000 in San Antonio than you would $100,000 in Silicon Valley. That’s entirely possible! I think things are going to come out pretty even — economically speaking — once you adjust for the cost of living. I’m a huge fan of Texas. It’s a great business market and tax situation down there. But really, in my mind the question comes down to your personal comfort level and quality of life. And that’s something you’ll have to answer for yourself!

Housing Includes Taxes and Insurance Dear Dave, You recommend that no more than 25 percent of your monthly income go toward a house payment. Does this figure include taxes and insurance too? Ryan Dear Ryan,

Dave Ramsey is America’s trusted voice on money and business. He has authored five New York Times bestselling books: Financial Peace, More Than Enough, The Total Money Makeover, EntreLeadership and Smart Money Smart Kids. His newest best-seller, Smart Money Smart Kids, was written with his daughter Rachel Cruze, and recently debuted at #1. The Dave Ramsey Show is heard by more than 8 million listeners each week on more than 500 radio stations. Follow Dave on Twitter at @DaveRamsey and on the web at daveramsey.com.

Yes, it does. Your housing payment should not exceed 25 percent of your monthly takehome pay on a 15-year, fixed-rate mortgage. When it comes to buying a house, the goal is not to live in the Taj Mahal or have something so expensive you end up being “house poor.” When buying a home, especially for first-time homebuyers, you should look for something nice — in a decent area — that you can get paid off as quickly as possible. It’s really not a big deal if you cheat a couple of percentage points one way or the other. But 25 percent is a good rule of thumb to ensure you’ll still have money left over to live on, save and invest! —Dave
