Organization topics: Community development, E quality and non-discrimination, Youthwork;

Inclusion category: This organisation is willing to involve volunteers who face situations which make their participation in activities more difficult, from the following categories for different types of project: • Economic obstacles • Cultural differences • Disability Short description of organization volunteering activities:

Associazione Attiva-Mente has been based in Modica (province of Ragusa), since 2013. Initially it was created to give international mobility opportunities to young people from Ragusa and Siracusa - the most southern provinces of Italy, with the highest unemployment rate and - at that time - with the lack of any experience in Youth in Action Programme. As this part of the country is massively affected by the phenomena of immigration (which is even more urgent now with the arrivals of refugees) andresulting in appearing struggles in terms of identity, diversity, inclusion and integration, Attiva-

Mente obviously had to respond to these needs, setting the intercultural dialogue as one of its main working priorities, combining it with volunteering and non-formal education. The main target group are local young people. Therefore, the Association: • Promotes the idea of European citizenship through the participation of young people; • Promotes initiatives against racism and xenophobia;

• Promotes culture as a mean of combating all forms of prejudice and social exclusion; • Promotes volunteering as a mean of change and to achieve a better society, encouraging active solidarity and participation by young people, without discrimination definition on sex, race, religion and economic conditions; • Promotes ideas of respect for sustainable development;

• Promotes the theme of legality and antimafia issues. For reaching these goals, Attiva-Mente provides the following activities on regular basis:

»» A web radio channel "Radio Sbaglio", where young people have an opportunity for selfexpression;

»» Various workshops and artistic and cultural events on interculturality, tolerance, interreligious dialogue, anti-xenophobia and European active citizenship;

»» Non-formal discussion groups in foreign language, to improve young people's language skills;

»» Support for young creativity, endorsing metal music festivals in Modica; »» Participation in international and local Erasmus+ projects, including sending participants abroad and hosting projects at home; »» Being an InfoPoint about international mobility possibilities for local young people;

»» Cooperation with refugee centres, schools and other local institutions. The organisation is a part of a professional trade union"ForModica", active in the field of the project professionals. The organisation is also an active member of EPTO | European Peer Training Organization since 2017.

Fundacja Mobilni Polacy Kościuszki 11.1, 56-300, Milicz, Poland http://mobilnipolacy.org.pl -+48794588206

Organization topics: Teaching and learning of foreign languages, Creativity and culture, Youth (Participation, Youth Work, Youth Policy); Inclusion category: Receiving projects: Economic obstacles, Educational difficulties, Health problems;

Coordinating projects: Economic obstacles, Educational difficulties, Health problems; Short description of volunteering activities: Our local activities (just examples):

• language cafes for residents and volunteers in which locals learn foreign languages, and EVS volunteers - Polish.

• games and activities that develop the creativity of children and young people - like urban script games, presentation which involved activities of audience, cultural and sport games, soft-skills and psychological trainings, international cultura evening. • joint organization of local, national and even religious events in which the whole community takes part: Festival of orchards, the feast of the

Carp, March 1, Easter breakfast, May 3, Days of Milicz, Days of the EU, August 1, September 1, September 17, Feast of the Carp, Volunteering Day, Europe Day, Santa Claus, official Christmas Eve with various groups that invite volunteers.

Most of these activities are carried out by volunteers after their main activities within the framework of the host org. however with their support and encouragement, in order to build an even stronger relationship with the local community, not only the implementation of volunteering "inside the host organization". Over the past few years, the Foundation has been co-operating with EVS volunteers, Poles who returned from emigration, and volunteers from abroad, who had previously been volunteering in Milicz, who decided to stay here. The inclusion of such people in the work of the Foundation is important to us because they have a broader perspective and greater sensitivity to foreigners' problems, often unnoticeable for people living all alone in one country, thanks to their personal experience. We also help local youth in organizing youth exchanges (over 200 people). already participated in the Milicz poviat in youth exchanges organized by us). Besides, we organize soft skills training for the residents of the Milicz county, with particular

emphasis

on

high

school

students.

Thanks to our activity in the Milicz county, more than 50 volunteers have been hosted already here. EVS (short and long-term) and many groups as part of youth exchanges, study visits or trainings. Their presence here has a real impact on overcoming various stereotypes: national and cultural, religious, professional or gender. Through co-working process of volunteers from Europe and partner countries as well as local youth and employees of the foundation, we show the local community a deeper sense of the existence of the European Union.

We work with local self-governments, public institutions and other NGOs, in order to improve the quality of activities we carry out for the benefit of the local community. Our cooperation with the Milicz Association of Friends of Children and People with Disabilities, one of the largest of its kind in Poland, works very well.

On-going projects: • Building a better family environment

• Educational – Entertaining Daycare Center for Street Children

The daycare center is located Shuto Orizari, which is part of Skopje, Macedonia and is the biggest Roma community in the world. Out of a total population of 22,017, 13,342 people (79,1%) are Roma. It is possible to say the Shuto Orizari has specific atmosphere which makes this area unique among other Skopje municipalities. Shuto Orizari is one of the most economically deprived areas of Skopje and the inhabitants are facing many social and economical challenges including a high unemployment rate (unemployment amongst the Roma population is currently estimated at 53 percent, compared to some 27 percent of the non-Roma population, Source: UNDP - Macedonia). Moreover, many citizens of Shuto Orizari did not finish any education and around 30 percent of young adults over 18 are also

illiterate. The majority of employed Roma are in unskilled or semi-skilled jobs and many of these jobs are irregular, temporary and part-time. Especially appealing are also the living conditions of women, young people and children that are belonging to one of the most vulnerable groups.

The Educational – Entertaining Daycare Center for Street Children takes care of about 100 street children from the ages of 3 to 18 from Monday to Friday. The main goal is to provide a safe place for street children where they can spend their time usefully and in a structured way, and to help them to integrate into society. The center is also a shelter where the children's basic needs are fulfilled. They're provided with food, clothes, hygiene products, warm water, school materials and toys – things they don't have on the street or in their improvised homes. Since a high percentage of people in Shutka are illiterate, education plays a big role in the center. The children learn how to read and write and get prepared to enter the education system; because only through having a proper education and school certification do the children have the chance to break out of the cycle of poverty, illiteracy and unemployment. Apart from that, the day care center is a place where the children, as well as their parents, can find psychological support regarding their personal struggles.

The children have the possibility to spend their time in a safe environment, which eases the burden of the parents who struggle with poverty and are often overchallenged with their tasks. Since around half of the parents are illiterate, the team of the center also helps them to deal with documents regarding school or other bureaucratic topics. That's why from its opening until today, the benefits of the services offered by this daycare center has had a meaningful impact

on a lot of children and their families. Depending on the progress and needs of the children at the center, they can stay up to one year, of course, all these are due to see if that year has tangible results, i.e. actively attending the daycare center and school. If, for any reason, the progress goes slower, the children can stay longer in the center. Link to EVS project in data base: https://europa.eu/youth/volunteering/ organisation/946862300_en

EVS volunteer from Latvia in Bulgaria

Greetings! My name is Rihards and I’m a “young” Latvian lad from Riga currently volunteering in Alternativi International. I would be lying if I would say this is my first time abroad, but what I can say is, this is my first time I have made such a big commitment of staying in a different country for such a long time, 9 months in my case. Needless to say, there were some concerns and worries on my mind before coming here. Thankfully it took me only a few days to realize that the things that were causing me anxiety before, were no longer on my mind. I have been living in Blagoevgrad for 5 months now and my experience so far has been virtually flawless. Let’s start with the other EVS volunteers that Alternativi International have received. I don’t know how exactly how they choose them, but gathering so many amazing people from all over the world can’t just be a coincidence. They really seem to know how to choose great people to cultivate a productive

working environment, as well as fun and eventful free time environment. As someone who has been in quite a bit Erasmus+ training courses and youth exchanges, I can truly say that the time spent with the other volunteers has been nothing short of amazing, at work and especially our spare time. From what I have discussed with previous and other current volunteer, it seems I am not the only one who has had stellar EVS experience and I really believe that it’s thanks to the people behind Alternativi International. The care I’ve received so far from the EVS coordinator and the NGO’s founders has been truly wonderful. Wether it’s something as simple as a small gap in the window, something more serious like a broken boiler or, god forbid, something health related, I can peacefully sleep at night, knowing that I will receive the help and support I need. I know this might sound a bit over exaggerated and over the top, but really, these 5 months have truly been splendid, eye-opening, fulfilling and just plain fun! Here’s hoping the remaining 4 months of my EVS can get even better than it already has been!

EVS volunteer from Estonia in the Republic of Macedonia

My name is Ann I am 25 years old and I just finished my long-term EVS in Skopje, Macedonia. I was volunteering at a local NGO called Volunteers Centre Skopje where my main project was to work on youth magazine called “VOICES”. How did I choose my project? Even when I was younger I always had a plan to volunteer for a year. I did not know where and when but I knew I would do it. As soon as I finished my studies in University I knew that it would be a good time to volunteer. So I started looking for a project and it didn’t take me long to find one in Macedonia that I found interesting. After that I was faced with waiting for my visa, but when it was done I was good to go. So what did I really do? I did a lot of different thing but the main project was “VOICES” magazine as was previously mentioned. Once a month we would publish the magazine. We would do everything starting from writing

the articles to doing the design for them and managing the promotion. I also had a chance to manage the Blog for the magazine which was great since I also wrote some repotages for the events and projects we were part of. Working with Voices gave me a lot of experience on working with different nationalities and how we see things. Since we all worked on the magazine and had to communicate to make it good. It also made me think more through the eyes of young people since that was the main target of the magazine. As the time went on I started to also be more creative with the designs and got more used to using InDesign so that was very nice. About other things I did: One of the first things we did with the volunteers was having different activities for young people. We hosted language cafe and karaoke, Board Game nights, Movie nights, Culture nights etc. It was just a way to give young people something fun to do and also to integrate the volunteers into the Macedonian society. After that we started with going to High Schools to do workshops on different topics like communication, volunteering, Erasmus+, writing a CV, non-formal education, goals etc. Giving presentations in Schools really helped me to be more confident in public speaking. At first I wasn’t sure how well the children would understand English and if the topics would interest them, but in the end of the day it was all good. I also managed to teach English in an language school. It was great to use non-formal ways to teach, because the students were excited and did not know what we will do next.

EVS volunteer from Turkey in Romania What is this EVS? EVS Long Expansion; European Voluntary Service. I'm a longterm volunteer. I am currently working as a volunteer in the Romanian district of Arad. I'm working on Bullying with my other friends who are accepted to the project. So what are we doing in this project? Our project has four modules. The first module is also bullying and chatting with the kids by telling some sub-titles. In the remaining three modules, we do more workshops. When I started that project I felt very good because that project important for students. Also when I arrived here I didn't know anything about English but now I speaking. Evs projects have a lot of opportunity. You can meet a lot of people from different country and if you want communication with them you have to speak English. In this way you can know different culture. The other point you can have a lot of opportunity about travel. We had important training and in this way we met a lot people. And know I know so many good different countries people. If you be long-term volunteers you'll been two training. You will learn a lot of thing about have you can improve yourself. You will have special experience. Erasmus projects have can create a lot of opportunity for your future. I love be here. Because in the same time I had funny moments, special moments and useful moments for the other people and myself. I think Evs projects are an experience that every young person needs to live in.

EVS volunteer from France in Estonia

I work in the SOS children’s village of Keila, 30km from Tallinn. SOS children’s village is an international NGO, that offers to kids without parental care living condition based on the family model. We have 12 houses with up to 6 kids per house, living with an SOS mother who takes care of them. I am here as a support person for the kids and the mothers. English workshops and games with kids: Each week, I meet a few kids who are motivated in practicing english. I try not to make it boring by making them express themselves and improve through games and activities for all levels. Gymnastics lessons : Each week, I use the gymnasium in the village to teach gymnastics to 5-10 kids. I also try to make it fun through different activities and games, and they are improving a little bit more each week. At the end of the year, I would love to organize a performance/competition in the SOS village with them.

Different activities/games : I try to propose different activites each week, they are times for children to play and discover new activities. We play a lot of playboards together, Xbox, but also yoga, cooking… I also have the project to do some cultural events more often : for exemple, for Vastlapaëv, I made some crepes with the kids because this is what we eat in France for this occasion. Replacing the SOS mothers : the SOS children’s village is a substitute home for kids whithout parental care. In total, we have 12 houses here, and each house host up to 6 kids, they live with one SOS mother who take care of them. Sometimes, these mothers can’t be here (personal reasons, meetings, illness…) so I am here to replace them. It’s very interesting and helps me knowing the kids better. Participation to seminars: I have been to Narva, a city in the Est of Estonia, to participate to a meeting with others SOS workers there. We exchanged on a specific social program they would like to set up here in Keila. Participation to the ski trip with the kids : In february, we are going to have a ski trip with the kids, where I’ll help the social workers here as a support person It’s already a lot of fun and interesting tasks, activites I have done here, but some other and new ones are of course coming in the following months!

EVS volunteer from France in Republic of Macedonia As my bachelor degree was coming to a close, I started to dig for gap year opportunities abroad. That’s how I found out about the European Voluntary Service (EVS) and Volunteers Centre Skopje (VCS). Frankly, of all the available projects, the one offered by VCS seemed to be the most serious, developed and diverse with the most potential to fulfill my yearn for change, and I was right. I spent close to nine months in Macedonia, exploiting VCS’ network to broaden my experiences. I promoted the project on national television, local radio and an online blog. I benefitted from the mentorship of one of the most seasoned journalist of the country, working regularly on VOICES magazine, writing, designing, proof-reading and publishing articles on both its blog and its monthly issue. I planned and supervised workshops on improv theatre, non-formal education, soft professional and educational skills. I trained high schoolers to the art of Model United Nations, (MUN) and they came back with awards. I offered language lessons and supported a Youth Exchange program. Yet, this is only the tip of the iceberg. My entire experience, living in a Balkan country, a region I knew so little about, and with people with such different background and underpinnings, has brought me so much on the personal level. In nine months in Skopje, EVS volunteer from Estonia in Italy I grew and matured more than I did in three years as a student. Of course, not everything was always “rainbows and unicorns”, as many people would say in VCS. Not everything was perfect, or easy, but that was the whole point in the first place, and I will always remain grateful for this great opportunity.

EVS volunteer from Estonia in Italy

Main Activities Developed: • Work in the local library – book inventory. • English lessons in local schools – I participated in English lessons in local schools, where I helped the English teachers to encourage students to speak in English. • English Conversation Club – I organized English conversation club together with other volunteers for the kids aged 7 – 13 years. Conversation club took place once a week for 2 hours for 10 weeks.

• International project writing – I carried out activity for other volunteers who were interested in working with international projects. Once a week for two hours we came together and I explained the process of the project writing and project management. • Blog and campaigns – together with other volunteers I was responsible for creating important campaigns for local community and promote the campaigns in our blog. Also we started the personal EVS experience section in our blog. • Promoting international opportunities – I participated in activities, which aimed to promote Erasmus+ opportunities for young people. Also I created EVSLife page in Facebook, where together other volunteers we showed different parts of EVS volunteers’ lives. • Personal English lessons for high school students – few times a week I met with students from high school who wanted to improve their English speaking skills.

EVS volunteer from Turkey in Romania

My manifesto; I would like to start by noting from Cansu who applied for the project, stating that you read from the volunteer Cansu for 6 months. Since my first visit, I have been informed about Romania's culture, education system, history, cuisine, language, religion and cities. I had the opportunity to see the new generation in the schools I attended. I was very touched in all the activities I was with the disabled and the disabled. All of us have met our own culture. My roommate is an Italian, and I think I've embraced it to think that ketchup laying in the pizza is a crime. I understood that unformal training, kids and me were active. I did a Balkan tour. I traveled to 7 countries in different cultures alone. I met dozens of people from different countries. I invited them to Romania and Turkey. English was a language that I could speak and understand. And most importantly, I have moved my social relations to a higher quality level. I know with great experiences and beautiful emotions that EVS will never end for me mentally.

EVS volunteer from Poland in Republic of Macedonia My project in VCS started in May 2017 and lasted 12 months. It was a year full of surprises, ups and downs, getting new experience, using already gained skills and developing new ones. The project that focused on media, informal education and in fact much more gave me an environment in which I could test what suits me best and what is not my kind of thing. For many I would say this could be a test run before adulthood. During EVS one is put in many contexts and situations not all of which one wants to be, so my stay was also about facing the unwanted and learning how to deal with that. The project didn’t have strict rules which allowed for anyone that was up for it to explore different areas of NGOs activity. During this time in Macedonia I used my past experience doing what I like and allowing myself to learn more, get to know how to use graphic software, become more self-conscious and learn how NGOs work etc. The office was a space that anyone could use as they designed that for themselves. Being part of the team that created from the scratch a magazine, increasing the amount of views from 2000 up to 5000, organizing and facilitating events, workshops, discovering Erasmus world from the other side all that was a part of crazy journey in which I saw my impact on the surrounding, tiny but still visible. The project not only developed my soft skills but also added up in my CV that might have reflected later on while facing job market.

EVS volunteer from Estonia in Republic of Macedonia I started volunteering in an Estonian organisation called Noored Ühiskonna Heaks, since I wanted to be more included in youth work and making the life better for young people in my own way. To make myself experienced and gain more knowledge about Erasmus+ and EVS (European Voluntary Service) opportunities, I decided to take part in a project called ‘’EVS as one more step towards inclusion.’’ It took place in Split, Croatia and it was a good opportunity to learn about the organisational part of EVS but also to hear a lot of stories from other volunteers. Of course, it made me think about becoming a volunteer myself but I was not so sure about it, since I thought I should think more about it, find a perfect project and all these kind of things. But in the end, a friend of mine from the project gave me an advice to make a decision based on a project more than on a country, so I went back to Estonia to talk to Marco Satnos from NYH and he offered me a perfect project in Macedonia. Meanwhile I also found out that ‘’EVS as one more step towards inclusion’’ has also a second part that takes place in Macedonia. The second part was a study-visit, where we visited different organisations and NGOs in Macedonia including Volunteers Centre Skopje (VCS) - my coordinating organisation, and my current workplace - Daily Care Centre for Street Children in Shutka. After the study-visit I was extremely excited and more than ready to come and start my project already. Now, I have been here 5 months and I am very happy to have discovered the opportunity through a project without even planning to do EVS before. The project was the right kick for me to risk and do something that I really love.

UDRUGA Andjeli and the partners of the project wish you a lot of success in your experience/work in the European volunteering programs!!!
