“VCU’s visionary new ICA can make it one of the world’s best art schools.” Jeffrey Deitch Director, Museum of Contemporary Art, L.A. Founding Member, VCU ICA International Advisory Board

Art that Takes Risks The VCU ICA will be a non-collecting institution focused on exploring the art of today and tomorrow — a place for the presentation of the latest visual art, theater, dance, and film, by nationally and internationally recognized artists, as well as a lab for developing the art of the future. ICA programming will: • Expose students and the community to the latest contemporary art • Raise questions about social and cultural issues • Encourage collaboration across disciplines • Develop new art and talent to challenge contemporary

thinking • Introduce new thinking through partnerships • Complement other arts offerings in the region

“The ICA will be a catalyst for new kinds of artistic explorations and discourse for the VCU community while contributing to the national and international conversation in the arts.” Joseph H. Seipel Dean, VCUarts

DESIGNED FOR THE FUTURE OF ART The building has two entrances leading into the central “forum.” One opens to the city and the other faces campus, welcoming both communities to participate in the activities within the ICA. Steven Holl Architects designed the ICA with forward-thinking flexibility and features that include: • Expansive entryway forum (left) • 250-seat performance space • 4 flexible programming spaces • Double-height gallery (right, top) • Outdoor plazas • Sculpture terrace • Café with ICA shop (right, bottom) • Classroom • LEED platinum certification

“Like many contemporary artists working today, the ICA’s design does not draw distinctions between the visual and performing arts. The fluidity of the design allows for experimentation.” Steven Holl Architect, VCU Institute for Contemporary Art 2012 AIA Gold Medal Winner

BAcked by art-world heavyweights In addition to a dedicated Campaign Committee of supporters, the VCU ICA has engaged the interest of globally influential artworld luminaries who form the foundation of its International Advisory Board. President Michael Rao cites the ICA as one of his top priorities for VCU.

JOin the campaign Can a single building make a difference to a city’s future? My answer is a decided “yes!” In the right place, at the right time, with the right goals and support, the catalytic effects of the VCU ICA will be dramatic and lasting. We are grateful for the tremendous support we have enjoyed in our $32 million campaign to support this privately funded project—one that will fuel our creative energy by bolstering the education of its next generation creative class. My gratitude goes to all those who have given. I hope you will join us in our efforts to make a significant difference in the future of not only Richmond, but also the larger national and international artistic enterprise.

MICHAEL RAO, Ph.D. President, Virginia Commonwealth University
