Value of an Arts Education Education in the visual, performing, and design arts, specifically a VCUarts experience, develops creative problem-solving and critical thinking skills. Undergraduate Research Grants

Eco-Chic: Recycled Fashion

The Yellow House

Our students’ incredible ideas, level of thinking and curiosity continue to amaze and impress us. That’s why VCUarts puts its money where its mouth is, with grants totaling $25,000–$35,000 annually for undergraduate research.

Two students married their love affair with fabric in Eco-Chic. They took pre-existing fabrics such as curtains, upholstery or sheets from second-hand shops and transformed them into new and original fabrics, which were used to create a collection of one-of-akind clothing. (Pictured left: a model walking on the runway at the Eco-Chic Fashion Show.) Players: Grace Johnston, Sculpture + Extended Media; Anne Douglas Shaw, Craft/Material Studies Award: $1,800

Kakuma Kenya - African Refugee Art Club

Seven students from various disciplines created an art educational television program where puppets played a major role to teach audiences of all ages about artists and the inspiration found in their work. Players: Kay Milne, Art Education; Gerry Perez, Art Education; Warren A. Hamilton II, Kinetic Imaging; Dennis Williams, Theatre and Art History; Rebecca Rudolph, Theatre (Scene Design); Brian Glass, Kinetic Imaging and Computer Science; Emily Rosko, Theatre (Stage Management) Award: $2,500

Chasing Forever: Higher Learning through Hip-Hop Students traveled to Kenya to produce a video documentary about the African Refugee Art Club. The Art Club was founded by Awer Bul and other Sudanese artists who fled their country seeking safety. The group provides a rare artistic outlet for the “Lost Boys of Sudan.” Gabriel and Awer work to build an identity for Sudanese refugees worldwide. Players: Gabriel Williams, Kinetic Imaging; Awer Bul, Kinetic Imaging and Painting & Printmaking Award: $5,000 (funded travel to Kenya, lodging and video supplies)

A team of three students will investigate perceptions of hip-hop that show averse or detached feelings towards hip-hop culture. In collaboration with the VCU Student Hip-Hop Organization (SHHO), they will launch a publication that defies negative perceptions towards hip-hop and informs about the worldly and multi-disciplined influence hip-hop has gained over the years. Players: Neil Lopez, Advertising; Duy Nguyen, Cinema and Philosophy; Rebecca Rice, Graphic Design Award: $2,100

VCUQatar Since 1998, VCUarts has had a sister campus in the Middle Eastern state of Qatar. VCUQatar offers BFA degrees in Fashion, Interior and Graphic Design and Painting & Printmaking, as well as a master’s degree in Design Studies – the first of its kind in the region. VCUQatar has 230 students, 45 faculty members and 270 alumni. In 2007, we went from an all-female student body to a co-ed body. Select students from each of our campuses visit the other, take classes and get a taste of a completely different culture. qatar.vcu.edu

Is it hard to get into VCUarts? The best way to answer is by letting you know that annually, we have approximately 600 available freshman seats and we receive over 2500 applications. Review committees carefully evaluate all application components, including GPA, SAT/ACT scores, portfolios or auditions, personal statements, extracurricular activities and letters of recommendation.

What kind of high school GPA and test scores should I have? VCUarts does not have set minimums for SAT scores or GPAs; we examine your overall application to determine your potential for success in the School of the Arts. The average SAT of accepted students in Fall 2011 for Math and Verbal was 1141 (ACT composite = 25). The average GPA was 3.62.

Application Process All of the VCUarts application criteria can be found at arts.vcu.edu/apply. There is only one application for admission to both VCU and VCUarts.
