Welcome to a New Year! Catie Kruger, SVEA: Aspiring Educators President

Whether you are preparing for your first year with us or joining us for another year, welcome! This years SVEA Board of Directors have been hard at work planning for this year. This year we will be participating in IPD with VEA, hosting a statewide Diversity week, and holding our convention this spring, as well as many other events throughout this year. In this issue you'll find who the new Board of Directors are, what the statewide regions are, our newest membership competition, our t shirt designs for this year, and how to serve on an SVEA E-Committee! I have a goal of visiting every campus in Virginia this year! Please let me know when you'd like a visit! Let's have a great year!

Meet the Board Catie Kruger, President Catie is an aspiring English educator at Old Dominion University and has been an active SVEA member for the last four years. This will be her second year serving as your SVEA president and she looks forward to meeting all of you as we work together this year.

Morgan Brown, Vice President My name is Morgan Brown, I will be the Vice President for the 2018-2019 school year. I am a senior at Old Dominion University from the Richmond area, my major is elementary education with a minor in special education. I have been a student member of the Student Virginia Education Association for three years, and have loved every minute of it. I have served as Treasurer and Vice President of the Old Dominion University SVEA Chapter. Last year I served at the Eastern Region Representative for state SVEA board. Currently I am the President at Old Dominion University. I am very excited to be serving on the Board of Directors, it is going to be a great year!

Emmy England, Secretary Emmy England, a junior at Old Dominion University, is an English major with a concentration in Secondary Education. After college she plans to teach middle school English and later go into school administration. Over the summer she works as an Instructional Aid for students with Autism through Hanover County Public Schools. This year England will be serving as Secretary on the Board of Directors as well as Vice President of ODU's chapter of the Student Virginia Education Association. As a Freshman England received the J.D. Miller Outstanding Underclassman award from the National Education Assocation Student Program. England has held the position of Secretary in the ODU SVEA for two years and is excited to continue this role at the state level. In addition to the SVEA, England is a Resident Assistant, on leadership with ODU's InterVarsity Chrsitian Fellowship, is a First-Generation student, and is part of the ODU Honors College.


Edward Vinson Benton III, Diversity Representative I am a senior year Mathematics major at Christopher Newport University. Outside of being a state representative for the SVEA, I am a brother of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. through which I serve in a number of initiatives such as raising voter awareness, assisting with the March of Dimes, and mentoring youth in the Hampton Roads community. I am also involved in the Math club, Black Student Union, and Pi Alpha Delta (a Pre Law fraternity). I have a passion for education with a special interest in policy and law revolving around the nation’s public school system. Fun fact about me, I’m an eagle scout.

Jalelah Winfield, Underclassmen Member at Large

Jalelah Winfield is a sophomore honors student at Virginia State University, where she studies English with a concentration in secondary education. She currently serves as the Student Government Association Director of Community Involvement and Institutional Research. She is currently the probationary CoPresident of the local Branch of the Student Education Association at Virginia State. After graduating from Virginia State in 2021 she plans to begin teaching in her hometown of Washington, DC. Her favorite quote comes from Malcom X it reads, “Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today”

Sarah Helbert, Southwest Region Representative My name is Sarah Helbert and I am the current Southwest Regional Representative. I I am a junior at the University of Virginia College at Wise where I am also the president of the UVA-Wise chapter of SVEA. My major is in elementary education with a concentration in history.


Gabby Jones, Western Region Representative Hello everyone! My name is Gabrielle Jones, I am your Western Region Representative! I also serve on the special education committee! I am a current senior at the University of Lynchburg. At Lynchburg I am a resident assistant and a public address announcer for our schools sports. My goal in education is to be a reading specialist, where I can not only help children to read but learn to love to read!

Jessica Bailey, Valley Region Representative Hi! My name is Jessica Bailey. I am currently a junior at Shenandoah University and pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Spanish. I plan to graduate in 2020 and look forward to teaching first grade. In addition, I work as a nanny for a family of three and enjoy tutoring students in Math as well as Writing in my spare time. I love children and hope to be an inspiration to all of my students. I am honored to serve as the current Chapter President for Shenandoah University and 20182019 Valley Region Representative for the SVEA Board of Directors. I am excited for the upcoming year and hope to grow our organization even more!

Vacant, Northern Region Representative The Northern Region Representative is currently vacant. If you are an aspiring educator in the northern region, or have a friend who is one, and would like to serve on the SVEA Board of Directors please contact Catie at ykrug001@odu.edu


Deja Marshall, Central Region Representative Deja Marshall is a sophomore Interdisciplinary Studies major at Virginia State University. She is most excited for the student convention and meeting all the great members from all around Virginia. She hopes to teach special education students in her very near future.

Caitlin Beverly, Eastern Region Representative I'm a senior at Christopher Newport University. I am an English major with a Literature concentration, and I am on track to becoming a secondary level English teacher. I am the Historian for my chapter. In addition to SVEA, I am a brother of Kappa Kappa Psi, and I am a member of Sigma Tau Delta - international honor society for English majors where I am the secretary for the CNU chapter. I am excited to work with the rest of the SVEA board and to be more active in this organization!

Serve on an SVEA E- Committee! This year, SVEA will be having two committees to assist the Board of Directors in our plans for the year.
