SB1124. Requires VBOE to make recommendations to the General Assembly for amendments to the Standards of Quality to establish standards for the maintenance and operations, renovation, and new construction of public school buildings. (S. vote: 2/13/23) SB1139. Would have required firearms and ammunition to be stored in a locked container inaccessible to minors or persons prohibited from possessing firearms, in residences where minors and such prohibited persons reside, and provided that violation is a Class 4 misdemeanor. (S. vote: 1/31/23) SB1215. As filed, would have required public school teachers to be compensated at a competitive rate, defined by current law as at or above the national average teacher salary. House substitute requires VDOE to convene a work group to consider “competitive” compensation, possible alternate metrics, and annual increase needed to remain competitive. (S. vote: 2/2/23; H. vote: 2/16/23) SB1260. Would have expanded eligibility for National Board Certified Teacher incentive grant awards, covered certain costs of obtaining/maintaining certification, and scaled annual award to $7,500 for all public school staff who obtained/maintained certification. (S. vote: 2/6/23) SB1325. Would have increased the ratio of specialized student support positions (e.g., social workers, psychologists, nurses, and other licensed health and behavioral positions) from three to four positions per 1,000 students. (S. vote: 2/6/23) SB1408. Would have authorized all counties and cities to impose, by voter referendum, an additional 1% sales and use tax with revenue dedicated to construction or renovation of schools. (S. vote: 1/23/23) HB1461. Would have required VDOE to establish, and each school board to adhere to, a uniform system of discipline for disruptive behavior and removal of a student from a class. (H. vote: 1/31/23) HB1526. Expands Virginia Literacy Act to grades 4-8 and requires VDOE to provide high-quality professional development in reading/literacy to divisions. (S. vote: 2/17/23; H. vote: 2/2/23) HB1556. Would have permitted school boards to employ or hire K-9 detection teams in any public elementary or secondary school in the division. (H. vote: 2/2/23) HB1821. Would have expanded the education improvement scholarships tax credit program. (H. vote: 2/7/23) HB2405. Would have required high school students to pass a test comprised of U.S. Naturalization Test questions to graduate with a standard or advanced studies diploma. (H. vote: 1/31/23) HB2490. Would have provided a framework for the establishment of division laboratory schools. (H. vote: 2/7/23) 4-14 #2s – Senate floor budget amendment. Would have authorized all counties and cities to impose, by voter referendum, an additional 1% sales and use tax with revenue dedicated to construction or renovation of schools.
