For the animals. Nine billion land animals are raised and killed for food each year in the United States. With virtually no laws to protect them, birds, pigs, and cows on factory farms are routinely treated in ways that would result in legal prosecution if those same abuses were inflicted upon the cats and dogs with whom we share our homes. By choosing vegetarian foods, we can stand up for animals each time we sit down to eat.

When Compassion Over Killing investigators found her at an egg factory farm, one of her wings was pinned in the wires of her cage. Painfully thin and dehydrated, she had struggled so violently to free herself that her wing dislocated and her tendons ripped. We rescued Jane, and after having her wing amputated, she now enjoys her freedom at a sanctuary where she basks in the sun, scratches the earth, and eats her favorite snack—green grapes.

Jimmy was born with rhinitis, a disease which deforms pig’s snouts. On modern-day factory farms, tens of thousands of pigs are crammed into large buildings without adequate ventilation. Respiratory illnesses are common, and thousands of sickly piglets die every year before even reaching “slaughter weight” when they are just six months old. Typically, sick and deformed pigs are killed by the farmers, but Jimmy managed to escape this cruel fate and found his way to Farm Sanctuary’s LA-area Animal Acres.

Shortly before Thanksgiving, Brando and 24 other baby turkeys were left on the doorstep of Farm Sanctuary’s LA-area Animal Acres. They were dirty, weak, debeaked, and some also had the tips of their toes cut off, indications that they came from a factory farm. Debeaking is a standard industry practice in which the tip of the bird’s sensitive, nerve-filled beak is removed with either a hot blade or by microwave; both procedures are performed on the baby birds without anesthetic. While Brando had a rough start, with the gentle care and love of the shelter staff he improved daily and is now enjoying life at the sanctuary.
