As the city struggles to absorb its glut of empty space, the commercial real estate bomb is ticking. Reporter Brian Sodoma weighs the potential damage Photography by Francis George

A commercial center, near I-215 and Rainbow Boulevard, has one occupant and a sign (right) that once proudly boasted the project’s lending institution.

What’s certain is that the consequences of the bust—our glut of empty spaces—will continue to haunt the city for years, and in a variety of ways.

“I do believe there is a ticking time bomb in the commercial real estate space.” — Jim Amorin

Two types of empty spaces: a project that never got off the ground (above) and a concept (the Power Center in Henderson, top) that worked until it didn’t.

Vantage Lofts has been sitting nearly completed for two years.

Perhaps these are the empty spaces that mark the passage of a city from youth to adulthood—the sense that greatness is not assured, that every city has its day in the sun, and that day inevitably comes to an end.

Polanski’s political thriller evaporates By Cole Smithey

By Geoff Carter

There’s no denying that Shutter Island appears on its face to be a different kind of film for Martin Scorsese—but it’s hardly the first time the revered director has mixed things up. In-between gangster epics and costumed drama, Scorsese has made some fairly unexpected detours:

“‘Crazy Heart’ is blessed with so many marvelous moments, lovely lines and vivid characters. This is the finest, fullest work of Maggie Gyllenhaal’s career. And it revels in the glory of Jeff Bridges. A performance on a scale with the West’s wide open spaces.”

Sites to see By Geoff Carter WONDERS AND SIGNS (neonmuseum.org) I love the Neon Boneyard. Whenever I find myself in the neighborhood of Las Vegas Boulevard and McWilliams Avenue I invariably stop and shoot a few photos of vintage neon signs through the chain-link fence, yet I’ve never signed up for the tour like an intelligent person would. But I will. Right now, the Boneyard is being remade with an entrance and walking paths, with the goal of creating a proper Neon Museum at long last. The Neon Museum’s website provides details of the construction process, one of the first steps of which is to replace my beloved chain-link fence.

IN PRAISE OF PHOTO BOOTHS (photobooth.net) Black-and-white photo booths are on the list of things I love unconditionally, wedged somewhere between Campari and every damn thing Tom Waits has ever done. Somehow, photo booths allow people to be truly themselves: You adjust the seat, close the curtain, put in your two bucks, face the camera and real emotion pours from your face. (Also, things often pour from bras and pants. It’s that curtain.) Photobooth.net celebrates these machines—from their locations to their place in pop culture—with such fervor that you’ll want to find your way to a booth immediately. There’s one at the Double Down Saloon, I think. Remember that public decency laws are only enforced if you’re caught.

SALMON LATTES AND EGGSPRESSOS (puttingweirdthingsincoffee.com) Things that go in coffee: Cream, sure. Sugar, absolutely. Butter ... well, maybe. Peanut butter and jelly? Whoppers Malted Milk Balls? Look, we’re heading into a whole weird area here, which is fine, because the Putting Weird Things in Coffee blog is already on the scene and reporting the carnage firsthand. I could tell you what a cup of coffee looks like once it’s met a strip of bacon, but you have to see it yourself. Wow.

The Red Chord

CD REVIEWS URBANTRONICA

Rare is the electronic artist who makes you feel like you’re roving alien landscapes. London-based Kieran Hebden (a.k.a. Four Tet) serves as your starship captain, transporting you to a place fraught with cosmic beauty, where songs have jettisoned all clichés and instead settled on a fragile star of pop splinters, nightclub shards and chunks of hazy vocals. Such is the composition of There Is Love in You, Hebden’s fifth full-length and easily his most accomplished effort to date. From the artificially textured keyboard march of “Plastic People,” to the angelic harpsichord-plucking of “Circling,” to the pots-and-pan-clattering indie-rock crescendos of “She Just Likes to Fight,” this CD is ideal for afternoon road trips from Vegas to L.A. and back, the desert whizzing by like a desolate dream. For the adventurous electronic or dance music fan only—or for anyone seeking out the best in today’s post-rock scene.

MEGASOUL

Sade’s first album in a decade finds the British songstress at the peak of her R&B powers. Her songs are timeless, whether you’re talking about a deep cut from her shimmering 1984 debut, Diamond Life, or a track off 2000’s Lovers Rock. Every note in Soldier harbors palpable desperation, leaving one to speculate that perhaps the geopolitical fallout of the aughts—in which the singer has confessed to focusing on her child and garden—has darkly impacted her songwriting. The title track, with its extended metaphor of martial danger and in which she mourns being “at the borderline of my faith,” is violent, while “Skin,” with its erotic pledge to “peel you away” (plus a heartfelt Michael Jackson reference), troubles the mind like a nightmare. Conversely, “Babyfather,” about the responsibility and blessings that come with parenthood, is arguably her most uplifting construction. An Amazon of modern soul. .

BEACHGAZE

Who can’t appreciate a band that mixes the echoey guitar slashings of The Jesus & Mary Chain with the wave-running popcraft of the Beach Boys? There’s no mistaking that Surfer Blood hails from coastal Florida, where shark attacks, orange groves and urban sprawl mix rather uncomfortably. However, whereas Vampire Weekend seems more concerned with tossing in ethnic flourishes to prove they’ve fulfilled the necessary diversity credits at their Ivy League institution, Surfer Blood brings in Caribbean rhythms one might easily encounter in the band’s hometown of West Palm Beach. Breakout single “Swim” boasts a soaring reverb-drenched hook to rival any of Phil Spector’s Wall of Sound smash hits. “Floating Vibe,” meanwhile, drifts into ebullient moments of late-’80s shoegaze. “Twin Peaks” reads like a love letter to David Lynch, as the band attempts a Roy Orbison imitation after downing too many piña coladas. Retro and deliriously modern, Surfer Blood hangs a nearly perfect 10.
