Courting China Welcome to the Red Decade. Here’s the story of how Las Vegas is banking on it to get back in the black By Brian Sodoma

CHINA/VEGAS CONNECTIONS Distance: 6,520 miles as the crow flies. Flight time from Las Vegas to hub Seoul, South Korea, is about 13 hours. Chinese tourists to Las Vegas: About 112,000 per year. The 2015 projection (according to Bill Hornbuckle, CMO of MGM Mirage) is 500,000. Las Vegas population with Chinese heritage: 20,000. Ten years ago it was 10,978, according to the U.S Census Bureau. Chinatown: Established 15 years ago for Asian tourists and locals to enjoy authentic cuisine. Chinatown Plaza today has 55 tenants and very few vacancies.

Las Vegas Chinese Daily News : The five-year-old publication has a 30,000 circulation. The Friday edition recently jumped from 24 to 36 pages on the strength of real estate advertising that targets Chinese investors. 4: Superstitious Chinese suffer from tetraphobia, tied to the number four sounding like the word “death” in Chinese. CityCenter’s Aria is among several Las Vegas resorts that do not have floors 40-49. Red: A symbol of luck in Chinese culture. It’s rumored that some Chinese wear red underwear while gambling. 1,200: Number of people attending the first U.S.China Business Summit in Las Vegas last month. 200-plus: Number of Chinese businesses participating in the first China Brand Show at the Las Vegas Convention Center last summer. $30 million: Cost for Grand Canyon West Skywalk, built three years ago by Shanghai businessman David Jin. 2,000 tons: Amount of plastic and cardboard shipped each month by Evergreen Recycling from Las Vegas to China. One-third of the 100-person staff is paid for by China’s demand for plastic and cardboard. 380 million: Number of “netizens” in China, up nearly 30 percent from 2008, according to China Internet Network Information Center. 500: Number of golf courses in China, most of which are new. Beijing, with 60 courses, will likely reach 100 within two years. Las Vegas has 41 course operators.

“I’ll never forget the night that the infamous Gary 'Gaz' Regan came into the Downtown Cocktail Room with UBC Enterprises for a book signing, for which he showed up with no books. It was a small, private event, and he made us a cocktail with gin, green chartreuse and cayenne pepper. He strained it from the mixing glass with a ‘Regan Strainer’—a.k.a. his fingers—and recited a toast about masturbation. I don’t remember the name of it—it could have been impromptu— but it read like a limerick andI was crying from laughing too hard … so I don’t remember the [other] details. All the guests heard, and they were eating it up. It was a classic moment.”

CREATED BY CHARLOTTE VOISSEY FOR MANDARIN ORIENTAL LAS VEGAS Hendrick’s gin, Aperol liqueur, orange, pineapple and fresh-squeezed lime combine to create this slightly sweet crown jewel of a cocktail. "The golden leaf is a sophisticated, well-balanced gin martini with a subtle hint of mandarin orange," Mandarin Bar manager Melody Sheppard says. Mandarin Bar serves the cocktail with a shimmering crown of gold dust garnish, but the following is a simplified version to enjoy at home:

CD REVIEWS ELECTROPOP

Acclaimed actress/pop chanteuse Charlotte Gainsbourg has a thing for fey, verbose musical collaborators. Daughter of French rockstar Serge Gainsbourg, Charlotte found teen success on the French charts with scandalous synth-pop album, Lemon Incest. Gainsbourg dabbled in music, until 5:55, her 2006 collaboration with, most notably, Pulp’s Jarvis Cocker. This time, with IRM, Gainsbourg teamed with Beck, to create a fiddly, indirect—but deeply satisfying—album focused on the theme of mortality. (The title is MRI backward, a machine in which Gainsbourg used following a skiing injury.) The result is a wildly compelling, very rich landscape. The title track beeps and clanks like an X-ray camera in James Brown’s hospital. Studio gimmicks aside, the songs are solid. Listen to dreamy folk confection “Time of the Assassins,” and you’ll want another medical-related masterpiece from this duo.

INDIE

Prepsters from ’80s hell or indie-music pioneers? Vampire Weekend’s sophomore release, Contra, doesn’t counter either view, mainly because the band is content to build on the Paul Simon-scoring-a-Wes Anderson-flick sound of their 2008 self-titled debut. There’s less clean guitar picking now, and more eerie orchestration: synths, strings, Audio-Tune, drum machine, overdubs. Overall, the texture is richer, deeper and impossible to scorn. The pure adrenalin rush of “Cousins” alone is worth buying the album and the Galaga videogame-inspired dance rock of “Giving Up the Gun” should soon be energizing nightclubs. As before, there are plenty of African-tinged anthems. That said, the Ivy League lyrics make me want to smack singer Ezra Koenig’s face with a Trapper Keeper. His elegant voice, on the other hand, never grates. Accept its privilege, and you'll count Contra among the most sonically bracing indie-rock of the last 10 years.

SOULPUNK

Cold War Kids’ latest EP, Behave Yourself, is a satisfying snack to tide over listeners before the Long Beach, Calif. quartet steps into the recording studio. Make what you want of the “soul-punk” tag, but it’s still a decent encapsulation of the Kids' ragged yet tuneful emotionalism. Behave Yourself serves as a great jumping-on point for anyone who hasn’t heard of this band, and it says a lot about the Kids that there’s no filler appearing on what’s essentially a stopgap release. Vocalist Nathan Willett never lets his lyrics slack into easy sentimentality, even if the five tracks comprising Behave Yourself are unabashed love songs. Ultimately, the Kids escape all labels—unless you file this EP under “great songwriting.”

What’s new at First Friday

Angela Kallus’ small-scale works.

Along with the usual assortment of music, street performances, shopping, food and drinks, this month’s First Friday (Feb. 5) features a slew of new art exhibits. They include Derrick McAdoo’s abstract watercolors and prints at The Funk House (1228 S. Casino Center Blvd.); Angela Kallus’ smallscale works, previewing from 5-9 p.m. Feb. 4 at Trifecta Gallery (The Arts Factory, 107 E. Charleston Blvd., Suite 160); and the Contemporary Arts Center’s Tomorrow People—paintings, drawings and sculptures by emerging artists Leah Craig, Catherine Cruise, Justin Favela and Thomas Willis (The Arts Factory, Suite 107). First Friday runs 6-10 p.m. in the Arts District downtown. For more information, visit firstfriday-lasvegas.org.

Sites to see By Geoff Carter LAS VEGAS LOCAL (flickr.com/groups/vegas_local/pool). There are dozens of Las Vegas-related groups on Flickr, but Las Vegas Local is my favorite of the bunch. It’s loaded with the best work of some fairly excellent local photographers, such as Flickr-users Heximer and Roadsidepictures. Their photos present Las Vegas as a city, not an amusement park. True, there are photos of neon signs in the pool (mostly downtown signs), but also photos of classic ranch homes, the decaying motels of lower Fremont and those guys on the Strip who hand out escort fliers. And Las Vegas Local is an 18-and-over group, which means our town is presented as nature intended—with cleavage.

WET AND WILD (wetdesign.com). These days I only get on the Web to find things, like cheap airline tickets, old friends or pornography. It’s been a while since I’ve had the patience to sit and look at a website—to let it happen to me—but I could stare at the glistening surfaces of WET Design’s graphics-intensive website for minutes at a time. WET designed the futuristic water features at CityCenter, and its site is more of the same: moody music, striking visuals, abundant atmosphere. Looking through WET’s list of projects feels like playing Myst, but without the puzzles.

THE PINUP ART OF KRYSZTOF NEMETH (charm-school.com). Lawrence, Kan.based illustrator Krysztof Nemeth does very specialized, very traditional work. Like Gil Elvgren and Donald Rust before him, Nemeth draws pictures of pretty girls in poses optimally designed for tattoos or the nose of a World War II bomber. His site has a small army of punk-rock angels idling in its gallery—devil girls, roller derby queens, pirate maidens and bat-wielding psychopaths—all of them heartbreakers and many of them NSFW. If you like what you see, he offers his girls on T-shirts and shot glasses in his online shop, or you can even commission a custom drawing. Quite handy if you own a B-17.

Ski Deals If all this talk about the Winter Olympics (Feb. 12-28) has whet your appetite to hit the slopes, you’ll be happy to know there’s still some prime season left—as well as some great deals. A few that caught our eye: At Brian Head, Utah (brianhead.com), $52 lift tickets can be halved with proof of Terrible Herbst gas or car-wash purchases; at the Snow Bowl, near Flagstaff, Ariz. (arizonasnowbowl.com), lodging and two adult lift tickets are $129 ($169 on Fridays and Saturdays). In the Reno-Tahoe area (skilaketahoe.com), skiers can save up to 20 percent by buying the Heavenly lift tickets online, and Mount Rose (mtrose.com) deals include Ladies Day (Thursdays), two-for-Tuesdays and $20 off the midweek rate for students. – Rob Miech 92

HEALTH & FITNESS The ‘Back’ Story When Dray Gardner’s doctors reached for their scalpels, he reached for a yoga mat

By Melissa Arseniuk

YOU CAN DO THIS “Sometimes doing nothing is really doing something,” Gardner says, noting the “dead body pose” is something all people can work into their day, no matter how busy they are. “I call it a savasana,” he explains. “Just your body being still for 30 minutes, 15 minutes, whatever it is.” The best part is, it’s pretty simple.

PROFILE The guy: His deal:

You didn’t know, but…

His very Vegas yoga philosophy:

2) Do nothing. “Get on your back and stay still,” Gardner instructs. “Don’t go to sleep … just stay absolutely still. Feel your heartbeat, feel your chest expand, feel your chest sink, just feel your body [and] get in tune with what’s goin’ on.” And yes, you do get something from doing nothing: “It brings you focus; you can focus on what you have planned for your day,” Gardner says. “It gives you energy and vitality.”

Here’s how you do it: 1) Lie on your back, eyes open, arms at your sides, heels together, letting your toes fall to the side. “Kind of like you were put in a coffin,” Gardner suggests, alluding to the posture’s morbid name.
