BEST PRODUCTION CAST

BAZ—STAR CROSSED LOVE

With credits ranging from starring roles on Broadway to runs on talent reality shows (including The Voice, America’s Got Talent and So You Think You Can Dance) to performances at some of the country’s most iconic venues (think Lincoln Center and Hollywood Bowl), the collective résumé of the performers in Baz—Star Crossed Love is nothing short of damn impressive. Maybe that’s why this inventive piece of musical theater (incorporating the love stories and songs featured in director Baz Luhrmann’s films Moulin Rouge, Romeo + Juliet and The Great Gatsby) survived a year of Strip entertainment marked by several Broadway show closures. ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT BEST PRODUCTION OF A RESIDENCY

BACKSTREET BOYS: LARGER THAN LIFE

With state-of-the-art sets, impressive video components, cutting-edge special effects and stunning laser lights, the Backstreet Boys’ Planet Hollywood residency is exactly what its title says. Larger Than Life is an hour and a half of pure spectacle, and it doesn’t hurt that the grown-up boy band’s harmony and choreography are as on point as ever. At The Axis at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino, caesars.com/planet-hollywood BEST MINI RESIDENCY CREATIVE PRESENTATIONS

AEG PRESENTS

Limited engagements often don’t get the same promotional love as Strip resident acts, but AEG is changing that with vibrant custom artwork and videos for the mini residencies the entertainment company is backing. Incubus gets a trippy, neoninfused reel to promote its October shows at The Joint, while Widespread Panic’s Halloween weekend performances at Park Theater are being advertised with throwback footage of Las Vegas and one seriously awesome slot machine that would look great on any casino floor. aegpresents.com BEST PLACE TO CATCH A SHOW IN DTLV

THE BUNKHOUSE SALOON

A stacked calendar is not hard to fi nd anywhere in the Entertainment Capital of the World, but when you want a taste of sometimes obscure, usually independent and always cool musical talent, then The Bunkhouse Saloon is an easy winner. RETURN OF THE STAR TRIBES: DEVOTION TO THE SKY

Coming to the Center for Spiritual Living August 4–6, Return of the Star Tribes is a festival with enlightening workshops, such as communicating with star nations, shawl dances and sacred rattle making. One might leave the event so aligned they can feel the curvature of the earth. The purpose of Return of the Star Tribes is to enhance the world’s positive vibrations and ultimately prepares “the collective to pass through the lightning full-moon lunar eclipse and lion’s gate” on August 8. We have no clue what any of it means, but it sounds cosmic. pleiadianproductions.org BEST NEON SIGN WE WANT TO SEE RE-LIT

STAR MOTEL

Las Vegas used to be home to many roadside motels, where glowing neon signs lured the weary traveler, from the Blue Angel Motel of East Fremont to the Glass Pool Inn of Las Vegas Boulevard South. Most have disappeared and, of the few that remain, many are just a dimmed outline rather than a blazing beacon. The glow we’d most like to see restored is the Star Motel on Third Street, whose shooting star retains its color, if not its shine. Flipping those lights back on would make for a fine welcome to the southern end of the Arts District. 1418 S. Third St.

BEST DTLV GRAFFITI TAG

KITTENS IN THE HOOD

Walk around Downtown enough and start to recognize familiar stickers (“rich people graffiti”) and tags. A melting “JAT,” a caped Dracula and Indecline seem to be the busiest, making their marks on nearly every corner and streetlamp. But for the past two years, vibrant pussies have been popping up—and these kittens have claws. Kittens in the Hood’s kitties are by Jasmine Farro, a hairstylist at Makeshift Union by day and street artist by night. “I think it’s funny that they’re kind of shitty,” Farro says. Her colorful, mischievous alley cats were first spotted swimming on the Mission Linen building in the Arts District but now can be found all over town—including at Evel Pie and near Casa Don Juan. They apparently even made a background appearance in a porno once. Meow! instagram.com/kittensinthehood PHOTOGRAPHY ANTHONY MAIR

The institution formerly known as the Barrick Museum turned 50 this year, and 50 is clearly the new 20, because UNLV’s newly named Barrick Museum of Art can proudly flaunt its assets. This year has featured a lineup of engaging exhibits showcasing talented contemporary artists, celebrity guest appearances (such as an exhibit of Salvador Dalí–illustrated books) and smart curation of the museum’s collections, which include artwork from the Las Vegas Art Museum and the state’s Dorothy and Herbert Vogel 50x50 Collection, as well as a large number of cultural artifacts. unlv.edu/barrickmuseum

BEST HOST

LYNDSAY HAILEY

When we first learned that Channing Tatum’s Magic Mike Live Las Vegas was casting a female emcee, we thought, “Yeah!” But after watching Lyndsay Hailey alongside her 13 male costars— empowering fellow females with sharp humor (and holding her own in a dance number)—we thought, “Hell, yeah!” The Second City alum refreshes the male revue concept with a wit and intelligence that we didn’t know we needed with our six-packs until now. best local band

ALL-NIGHT VISITORS

It’s tough being a local band in any city but especially in Las Vegas, where the scene is small and it’s rare to find other acts to tour with. But AllNight Visitors have kept things afloat. While the indie group has played only a handful of shows this year, they released their EP, People Places Things, in late April. Frontman Walker Rose said the musicians were pushing to be more experimental with songwriting and sound, mashing up garage with other genres while incorporating brass and keys under Rose’s raspy Tom Waits/ Leonard Cohen–esque vocals. The whimsical arrangements of various styles combined with theatrical storytelling lyricism are what make the band stand out. Their latest music video for “Animal Mind” was released in late June, but expect to hear more from All-Night Visitors next year, when they plan to release their second LP. facebook.com/allnightvisitors PHOTOGRAPHY LYNSEY COOK

DOWNTOWN LAS VEGAS EVENTS CENTER

Sure, the DLVEC has been hosting events featuring top-tier talent since its 2014 opening, but its amped-up entertainment calendar this year has solidified the space as a venue to be reckoned with. In addition to one-off shows (Deftones and Rise Against recently shared its stage), the space has hosted two music festivals (April’s hard rock– focused Las Rageous and May’s Punk Rock Bowling) and even converted its massive lot into a makeshift stadium (complete with bleachers and a gridiron) in February for a giant Super Bowl viewing party. BEST LIVE JAZZ NIGHT

THE DISPENSARY LOUNGE

Every Friday and Saturday night at The Dispensary, the video-poker machines fall silent and blue notes fi ll the air. Uli Geissendoerfer oversees this transformation. Originally from Munich, Germany, Geissendoerfer launched the jazz series in 2012. The foundation is his trio, but talented guest musicians and vocalists shuffle on and off the stage. The jazz varies, from classic to the American songbook to Latin, depending on the guests. But one thing’s constant: the quality of the music. The venue is also unique. Swinging double doors lead to a mood-lit carpeted room of wood-frame chairs and couches. Plastic plants hang from the ceiling. It’s reminiscent of your grandmother’s living room, but Grandma never kicked out jams like these. 2451 E. Tropicana Ave., thedispensarylounge.com

BEST NEW RAPPER TO HIT THE SCENE

MIKE XAVIER

BEST SCENE- STEALER

PURPLE REIGN’S DREW JAMES

Las Vegas’ long-running Prince tribute show Purple Reign highlights two sides of The Purple One. Between its Kid of Purple Rain first act and the Prince of “Kiss” second-act, comes an interlude, with who else but Morris Day and the Time. As Prince’s zoot-suited rival, Drew James’ Day is all swagger and ego, preening in a mirror held by his flunky before bouncing into a rousing rendition of “Jungle Love” that has the audience on their feet. James brings enough comedic, kinetic energy to give the headliner a run for his money. But, hey, wasn’t it a challenge from Morris Day and the Time that made the Kid grow up into Prince anyway? When Mike Xavier raps “If you’re stressin’ payin’ bills and that rent’s due / remember this ain’t even half of what you’ve been through” on “Sunshine,” he isn’t talking to listeners so much as he is to himself. Just months before writing that song, the single father was homeless and living in a car. He’s since moved from his native Los Angeles to Las Vegas and got an apartment, but it’s the struggles of his past and love for his son that keep him focused. “I just want to do great things, and I want my son to see that he can do anything he wants to do with his life,” Xavier says. And though he’s been rapping since he was 16, the 33-yearold has only recently started giving his music a serious push. “I make music for a number of reasons, but one is to show people it’s never too late to pursue your dreams.” mikexaviermusic.com BEST PLACE FOR PRO WRESTLING

BEST REASON TO WAKE UP IN HENDERSON

CRAFTKITCHEN

DRINKING & DINING

Downtown urban dwellers might thumb their noses at Henderson and snidely refer to it as a sleepy suburb, and they would be correct. But here’s a secret: You’d be lucky to find yourself waking up in the southeast corner of the Valley if only to hit up CRAFTkitchen for breakfast. Chef Jaret Blinn’s spot offers some of the best eats to get you going in the morning, such as smoked salmon on a pretzel roll, red velvet pancakes and short rib hash. That’s assuming you actually make it into the restaurant without getting waylaid by the pastry case, which holds such treats as cronuts, croissants, homemade Pop-Tarts and scones. Food is a family affair for David and Michael Morton, the sons of legendary restaurateur Arnie Morton, creator of Morton’s Steakhouse. David is the founder of DMK Restaurant Group, which operates more than a dozen casual concepts in Illinois. Michael was the creator of hospitality company N9NE Group, which ran bars and restaurants all over the country, including N9NE Steakhouse in Palms Casino Resort. MIKE MOREY’S SIP ’N’ TIP

Whether you’re meeting a secret lover or plotting world domination, you’ll need a cozy, dimly lit place in which to operate. Capitalizing on a frequently overlooked space that was perhaps a little too far from the mixology action at Downtown Cocktail Room, the bar/lounge’s back room, formerly called the Speakeasy, has itself become a destination for canoodling couples and solo imbibers. In its new incarnation as Mike Morey’s Sip ’n’ Tip, the room evokes the chill side of Michael and Jennifer Cornthwaite’s aesthetic, with white subway tiles, concrete walls and a selection of whiskey and beers that yearn to be enjoyed side by side. STARBOARD TACK

Few things come back from the dead in better shape than when they first lived, but we’ll argue that the second coming of the lowbrow, nautically inspired 24/7 video-gaming tavern Starboard Tack is very much a step up. With its tropical wallpaper, captain’s chairs, 230-plus rums and frozen blended drinks, there are plenty of boozy classics and originals to quench that summer thirst, or just let barmen and proprietors Lyle Cervenka and Bryant Jane whip something up off the cuff. When you hear “Ting-A-Ling,” Ting ’n’ Stings are on sale. And dining on the Polynesian-esque dishes, such as a spicy chicken sandwich and assorted skewers, is a must. Every good gastropub requires foodie-friendly eats and tasty craft beverages. James Beard Award– winning chef Shawn McClain and renowned mixologist Tony AbouGanim have nailed it at Mandalay Bay’s Libertine Social, but we’re really there for Instagram-worthy pics. The eclectic decor and rustic loft-style atmosphere of this “next generation” gastropub, including a huge mural of a jackalope painted by famed Puerto Rican street artist Alex Diaz and two neon signs at the main bar that say “Stay Wild” and “Liberate,” provide the perfect backdrop for the ’gram. Group photos against a menagerie of framed artwork in the dining room will easily gain likes. There’s even a card game in the lounge called Dare From the Hare. ITALIAN AMERICAN CLUB

If the ultrakitsch pantheon of plaster Roman gods at the front of the joint doesn’t pique your curiosity, then the sign in the lot that says “Parking for Luigi Only” definitely will. The Italian American Club is an eastside gem, operating for more than 50 years as a social club for Italian-Americans and as a restaurant and entertainment lounge. One of the last remaining outposts of Las Vegas cool from a bygone era, it serves up delicious red-sauce dishes at a reasonable price, along with a stellar roster of nightly entertainment. Catch present-day Strip performers and those of yore belting it out, such as Kelly Clinton and Elisa Fiorillo. You never know who’s going to show up—maybe Luigi will even make an appearance. 2333 E. BEST VEGAN CHICKEN SANDWICH

GARDEN GRILL VEGAN CHICK’N SANDWICH BEST CHICKEN SANDWICH

MOMOFUKU

When David Chang opened Fuku in New York City’s East Village in 2015, people lined up around the block for its singular menu item: a perfectly crisp chicken sandwich made with gourmet precision. The Fuku phenomenon swept the city, and now there are multiple locations and several iterations—as fingers, glazed or spicy. When Momofuku opened its doors in Las Vegas, rumors abounded as to whether the sandwich would make it on the menu. A variation has, but it’s really all about timing. Available during the social hour (3–5:30 p.m.) and late-night menus (11 p.m.–midnight Sun.–Thurs., 11 p.m.–1 a.m. Fri.–Sat.), the spicy chicken sandwich is accented by cucumbers and lettuce and served on a potato roll. The $11 sandwich is a steal, whether you are sober or slightly intoxicated. Inside The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, momofuku.com MOST QUAINT FARMERS MARKET

DOWNTOWN3RD

Perusing the produce at Downtown3rd Farmers Market will have you questioning the drab fruit chilling in your crisper drawer. The colors of the deep-red strawberries and vibrant greens look like something Matisse could have mixed. And they taste as good as they appear. The shelves are curated by Kerry Clasby, founder of Intuitive Forager, who sources the produce from some 150 regional farms, all free of pesticides. Every Friday, local vendors line the hall of the old transit station selling fresh bread, honey, spices, jewelry and other artisanal items under a stunning copper ceiling. And there’s a cafe serving delicious food, too. 300 N. Casino Center Blvd., facebook. com/downtown3rd

Better than the real thing? Quite possibly. Excellent as a vegan alternative? Most definitely. The Garden Grill Vegan Chick’n Sandwich is crispy, juicy and has the soft, buttery texture of poultry—except it’s not. The plant-based Southern-fried chick’n breast comes on a whole wheat bun with chipotle aioli for kick as well as lettuce, tomato, onion and avocado. Available at the Fresh52 Farmers Market on Saturdays at Tivoli Village. gardengrilllv.com PHOTOGRAPHY KRYSTAL RAMIREZ

BEST VINTAGE RESTAURANT

BENIHANA

The Westgate is steeped in Las Vegas lore, having been the home of the King’s sold-out shows back when it was the International Hotel and Las Vegas Hilton. Modernized for today’s tourist, it still retains that vintage charm, which you’ll find in spades at Benihana Japanese restaurant. Walk through the red-lantern-strewn bar, past the wooden bridge, Japanese gardens and dark bamboo decor and into an open space where teppanyaki chefs perform dinner and a show nightly. You’ll instantly feel nostalgic for a time when fine dining was less stuffy and way more fun. Even kids are welcome here, and are the special recipients of culinary sleights of hand (a rolling egg, flying shrimp tails). And the food is solid—steak, chicken, shrimp and fish hit the spot, as do the appetizers, sushi and the crowd-pleasing fried rice. On the way out, linger by the ponds. We bet those koi fish have seen a thing or two. Inside Westgate Las Vegas Hotel & Casino, benihana.com

There’s so much more to do while drinking a solid beer than watching the sport du jour on the bar’s big screen. Breweries got that memo years ago, offering popular and throwback board games with their hops and malt bounty. And if imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then the beer-centric PKWY Tavern knows a thing or two about crafty copycatting. Head to one of three locations to enjoy some stellar suds while playing a round or two of giant Jenga or oversize Connect Four—both prove that when things are bigger, they’re kinda better. Multiple locations, pkwytavern.com

CHICA

The year 2016 was not good for women on the national scene, but 2017 saw the power of the female take hold of the world’s imagination, starting with the Women’s March. On a smaller, albeit more delicious level, the Las Vegas dining scene also saw a small revolution happen in its male-dominated ranks of celebrity chefs. Lorena Garcia, of Top Chef Masters fame, garnered a spot at The Venetian’s restaurant row, in a space previously occupied by DB Brasserie. The redesign is an ode to feminine energy, from the gorgeous murals to the soft colors throughout. The future is indeed female, and Chica is where you stop to refuel. (We suggest starting with the Sweet Corn Pancakes or the Pancetta Eggs Benedict for brunch.) Inside The Venetian, venetian.com/restaurants/chica PHOTOGRAPHY ANTHONY MAIR

LOVELADY BREWING

PUB 365

The Water Street to-do list has long included a stop at Gold Mine Tavern, but the quaint thoroughfare is now home to Downtown Henderson’s fi rst—and only—brewery. And while novelty is great, the family-owned Lovelady operation also routinely puts out some of the best local brews you can fi nd (at the taproom, they’re often served with a smile from one of the namesake’s brothers). Pro tip: Start with the 9th Island Pineapple Sour—it’s a delicious vacation in a glass. 20 S. Water St., loveladybrewing.com

Tuscany Suites & Casino’s beer bar recently rewarded a Las Vegan with an all-inclusive brewery tour in San Diego for being the first person to drink 365 beers (one beer for each day of the year—though he finished it in less than nine months) as part of its loyalty program. And with local brews (Hop Nuts’ Papa’s Red Ale), regional favorites (Ninkasi’s Dawn of the Red) and rare finds (Epic’s Big Bad Baptista, an imperial stout with Mexican coffee) on tap, we’d like to join that lucky local—and you should, too. 255 E. BEST PLACE TO FEEL LIKE A PRINCESS

SNOW WHITE CAFE

Some of us dreamed of becoming princesses as little girls, but here we are, all grown up and living in Vegas, and the only prince in sight is the one playing in Purple Reign. No matter, we can still live out the fantasy at Snow White Cafe, where our dreams now take the form of shaved ice (daintily called snow cakes) topped with a variety of sweet things such as fresh fruit, brownies and ice cream. This quaint dessert spot in Chinatown also serves fancy bevvies (made with Stumptown Coffee, that dreamy brew hailing out of Portland, Oregon) and boba drinks. Now that we think of it, screw Prince Charming: We’ve got sugar and caffeine making our hearts race. 3400 S. Jones Blvd., Suite 3

BEST PLACE FOR A FIRESIDE CHAT

THE DORSEY

There’s nothing like a fireplace to stir up feelings of romance. So what if it’s triple digits outside? The vapor, steam and mist hearth at The Dorsey offers all the glow and none of the heat. It’s a cozy nook from which to engage in that most elusive social activity these days—a face-to-face conversation. The design elements here are maximized to take you away from the bustle of a busy casino and into a more intimate place—from the drapes that come down as the evening progresses to the light fixtures that flatter complexions to a well-appointed bar (with a worldclass mixology program by Sam Ross). Remember a few years ago when The District was so deserted it was practically on life support? Well, these days you’d be hard-pressed to find parking on a Friday night. This is the hub for Hendersonians getting their weekends started, and it’s recently acquired a restaurant that’s given it even more cachet. Shake Shack, the vaunted New York burger joint conquering the West faster than you can say “manifest destiny,” just opened its third freestanding Valley outpost (fourth if you count inside T-Mobile Arena). That sound you hear is Southeast residents collectively cheering while simultaneously licking the secret Shack sauce from their fingers. At The District at Green Valley Ranch Resort, shakeshack.com

We like to think of 168 Market as the Asian version of Cardenas Markets in terms of variety. The Hot Deli section serves up entrées such as orange chicken and dim sum bites like fried wontons and sesame balls, while the Desir bakery has coffee and pastries and can make decorated cakes to order. In the produce section, there’s a variety of squash, melons, greens and herbs that you won’t find in regular supermarkets, as well as juices and chips. Other joys include the butcher and seafood counters, which offer prepackaged or fresh cuts as you shop, and an extensive frozen foods section. 3549 S. CHEF WITH THE BEST NAME

TIMON BALLOO

“Timon Balloo” are two words that make us ridiculously giddy. They make us brave the heat and park ourselves at Sugarcane Raw Bar Grill at The Venetian, where we happily stuff our faces with oysters, crudo and various bar snacks, paired with rum cocktails and other signature libations. The chef responsible for all this is the aforementioned Mr. Balloo, who hails from Miami and comes with James Beard Foundation bona fides. So if you hear us humming “Hakuna Matata” or “Bare Necessities” in between half-shell slurps, pull up a stool alongside and you’ll have no worries for the rest of your days. (Or at least until the end of happy hour.) Inside The Venetian, sugarcanerawbargrill.com

In March, chef Justin Kingsley Hall rounded up some of his top peers in Las Vegas to serve a primal feast amid the majestic beauty of Mount Charleston. Hall, Sparrow + Wolf’s Brian Howard, Bouchon’s Daniel Ontiveros, Echo & Rig’s Chris Goosen and others cooked everything from roasted lamb legs and wild hen to mussels and duck bone soup on open-fire grills. Meanwhile, mixologists from Herbs & Rye and The Sand Dollar Lounge helped craft cocktails to wash it down. The best part? All proceeds went to Opportunity Village. BEST HAPPY HOUR UNDER THE (FAUX) TUSCAN SUN

BOTTIGLIA CUCINA & ENOTECA

There’s no better escape from the oppressive summer heat than happy hour at Bottiglia Cucina & Enoteca at Green Valley Ranch. In the magical hours between 5 and 7 p.m. on weekdays, house wine, draft beers and well drinks are $6, as well as delectable bites such as arancini stuffed with fontina cheese, a cheese and salami board, beef Carpaccio, and zucchini flowers with lemon ricotta and aioli. The wood-roasted tomato soup, which comes with a Fontina, prosciutto and caramelized onion grilled cheese, is easily one of the best versions of the comfort food that we’ve ever had. Bottiglia’s environs—with its bright dining room and soft floral touches throughout—is so elegant and welcoming that you’ll end up staying way past happy hour, which is not a bad thing, because there’s a whole menu and wine list to explore. greenvalleyranch.sclv.com/dining/bottiglia

best family-run restaurant

ALL IN THE FAMILY

GAETANO’S RISTORANTE PASSES THE BATON TO THE FUTURE

When Gaetano’s Ristorante in Henderson opened in 2002, the city was a lot different. St. Rose Parkway and Eastern Avenue were single lanes, and where the two intersected, there was a four-way stop sign. Food options were sparse, and Taco Bell was the go-to. Obviously, a lot has changed in the 15 years Gaetano’s has been open. Actually, everything has changed—except Gaetano’s. It’s still in the same strip mall and still serving traditional Italian meals made from scratch. And it’s still family-owned. As the husband-and-wife team of Gaetano and Rory Palmeri get ready to retire, the torch of this fine dining establishment is being passed down to one of their sons, Nick, to keep the legacy going. The history of Gaetano’s Ristorante actually started long before the family landed in the desert. They had the same restaurant operating in Calabasas, California, from 1981 to 2001, when they relocated to Henderson. “We didn’t come here to open a business. We came here to retire,” Gaetano says in his thick Italian accent. “Instead, we opened the restaurant to be busy.” The concept took a little getting used to. Gaetano recalls it wasn’t what Las Vegas diners were accustomed to, and there was a bit of a learning curve in teaching people al dente wasn’t actually an undercooked pasta, but that it’s meant to be like that. Soon enough, locals began to value the restaurant and what it was offering. “When we moved here, everything was a chain,” Rory says. “Our uniqueness is that we aren’t a chain, we are family-owned, we know our customers. We have tons of repeat business and people who come for the ambiance, service and food.” And now Nick is set to take Gaetano’s to the next level. He knows the eatery is a gem in the city and appreciates the value of bringing in younger diners, something he is focused on as he prepares to become the owner. “A challenge is changing with the times, especially trying to attract the millennials and younger diners,” he says. “It’s about knowing what their likes and wants are and making them feel comfortable when they come into a restaurant like this, with traditional linens and personal service.” He’s started to expand the Gaetano’s spirit program, making barrel-aged Manhattans. He even plans to host a series of tastings in the next few months to appeal to a younger crowd, while still making sure the drinks complement the powerful flavors of the dishes. “I’m trying to get people engaged,” he says. “I want to start an educational/ industry hub when it comes to wine and spirits in Henderson. You see a lot of people going to the west side of town and doing industry stuff … so I’m trying to establish more of an industry following.” Even with Nick helming the restaurant, don’t expect Gaetano and Rory to disappear. “I will always come to help him out, even if I’m retired,” Gaetano promises. “Otherwise, I’m going to die. … When you’re retired, after two years, you die if you’re doing nothing.” 10271 S. VESTA’S DARK ’N’ STORMY

This nonalcoholic morning pick-me-up marries two vices into one: coffee and mixology. A freshly pulled double shot of Vesta’s inhouse roasted espresso is floated over 6 ounces of Gosling’s Ginger Beer (of course) and cube ice, and is then topped with just a dash of grapefruit bitters. The happy result is a long, cool refresher ($6) that beautifully introduces dark-roasted coffee in place of dark rum, and lets the gentle sweetness and spice of the ginger beer and natural dilution do their work. The aromatic citrus lift also provides a nice attitude adjustment for all you “I’m not a morning person” people. The drink that began as an off-menu experiment joins other new offerings, including the Espresoda (house citrus mix, sparkling water, basil-infused simple syrup and a single shot of espresso; $5.50) and the Matcharita (iced matcha tea, house citrus mix and basil-infused simple syrup; $5). best reason to wake up early

DEMETRIA OBILOR, 8 NEWS NOW

Dear Demetria, We were never early risers, but we find ourselves waking at dawn to watch your early-morning traffic reports (weekdays from 4–7 a.m.)—even though some of us walk to work. Your radiant presence on our TV screens is our double shot of espresso. Your bubbly personality makes something as mundane as reporting minor collisions on the I-15 a popcorn-eating affair. We love that you stay down-to-earth, tweeting rap lyrics and interacting with fans (“I’m a millennial and I’m not going to pretend to be something that I’m not,” you told us). And you’re a great role model. When a racist spouted hatred about your magnificent natural curly locks, you took the high road to empower young women. “There are so many people who are younger than me who are going to go through the same exact thing if they want to be in this field, or if they want to just work at Target,” you said. “You have to be able to feel comfortable with who you are, and I don’t mind taking a stand for that and showing people that, ‘Hey, it doesn’t faze me. Therefore, it better not faze you.’” We’re so glad you decided to move back home (Spring Valley High School, class of ’09) from the Midwest. But there’s one thing we forgot to ask during our interview: Are you single? XOXO, Vegas Seven PHOTOGRAPHY ANTHONY MAIR

AK

With heart and humor, AK stays busy. She works as a gang intervention counselor for Clark County, is a cohost of Power 88’s The Breakdown community talk show, and for the past 10 years she’s performed stand-up in basements and on bar stages across the country. Originally from St. Louis, AK was discovered behind the bar at Ice House, pouring drinks and making people laugh. A couple of guys who were hosting a comedy night there pushed her into performing by announcing her routine to the crowd without her knowing. The observation comic gets her material from her experiences and conversations, and often jokes about growing up broke, calling people with working car windows bougie. AK also started her own philanthropic organization, AK’s Closet, donating toiletries and used clothes to people in need. She could easily win an award for any one talent alone but instead decides to do it all.

DENNIS LOPEZ, GREETER AT BRONZE CAFÉ

DJ PHAROAH

If there was a mayor of Fremont Street, it would be Dennis Lopez. The 55-year-old Harlem native stands outside of Bronze Café at The Market with his beaming smile, serving compliments to passersby five days a week. He’ll shoot a “How’s my man doing today?” or a “That’s a beautiful dress” to anyone. “Even the panhandlers. They deserve respect, too,” he says. Lopez’s positive presence is a highlight of the day for Downtown denizens and, admittedly, he puts a smile on the Vegas Seven staff’s faces, who frequent Bronze Café. Hopefully this small nod puts one on his. Bronze Café at The Market, 8 a.m.–5 p.m., Sun.–Thurs., 611 E. Fremont St.

Most Las Vegas DJs are too young to remember cassette tapes, but Pharoah—that’s not a clever moniker; it’s his mama-given first name—is an OG. The Chicago native was making mixes using 8-tracks in high school and, while enlisted in the Marines, DJing parties at his base near San Diego. He still recalls his first gig in ’86, opening with the hottest song at the time: Joeski Love’s “Pee-Wee’s Dance.” Fast-forward three decades and Pharoah, now 50, is still at it, spinning weekends on Hot 97.5 and rocking special events. And if you’ve got a tech issue at your event, you’re in luck: Pharaoh also works as a specialist with Intelligent Technical Solutions. Can Diplo outfit your office with fiber internet? Even if you’re all about *NSYNC, you can admit that Nick Carter’s the one Backstreet Boy you’d invite to your ’90s dance party. He’d probably come, too, as the Planet Hollywood headliner (Backstreet’s back, baby!) seems to enjoy making appearances all over town. One minute he’ll be lunching at Sugar Factory, the next he’s onstage at Omnia Nightclub with Steve Aoki. You can have it your way, Nick, as long as you love us.

BEST HOPE FOR THE REBELS

BRANDON MCCOY

Last season was a nightmare for the Runnin’ Rebels. UNLV had 11 wins and posted the worst winning percentage in program history, as well as the lowest average attendance in a decade. But when five-star recruit Brandon McCoy signed with UNLV, the 2016–17 season was quickly forgotten. McCoy and the rest of head coach Marvin Menzies’ 2017 recruiting class ranks in the top 20 in the country. Even as a freshman, the 6-foot-11 McCoy has a chance to be one of the best players in the Mountain West Conference. With improved talent, UNLV should be back at the top of the conference, rather than scraping the bottom. BEST NEW FACE OF NEVADA POLITICS

YVANNA CANCELA

One of the bright spots of the 2016 elections, at least from our point of view, was the Silver State turning blue and electing the first Latina woman to the Senate. And while Catherine Cortez Masto got most of the ink on the national level, locally, a very young star was making her mark. Yvanna Cancela, not even 30 and already the political director of the 57,000-strong Culinary Workers Union for seven years—the youngest person to hold the position—was one of the most vocal oppositions against Trump during the campaign. (Remember the massive taco truck protest in front of Trump Tower?) At the end of 2016, she was appointed to the state Senate, becoming the first Latina to hold the position. Cancela’s political career may be nascent, but judging by what she has accomplished so far, we expect big things. What glass ceiling? Twitter: @yvannacancela

It’s legal for grown-ups to buy pot in Nevada—but that doesn’t mean it’s OK to light a joint just anywhere. Public consumption is illegal, so deploy preparation and discretion. Your best bet is to enjoy your sativa before entering an event or, if possible, duck out between bands/sets/acts. The most practical option is one of those little disposable vape pens. We won’t say that we’ve used them at rock concerts or reserved cabanas, in a stairwell or porte cochere—but we’re saying that maybe someone could.

In recent history there have been two ways to experience a Las Vegas nightclub: standing on the general admission floor or roped off with bottle service at a table. Taking a cost-sharing approach is our favorite new alternative: V.I.We, which launched in April at Tao Nightclub. Much like Uber Pool grants you a shared ride at a lower price, this revolutionary service—conceptualized by Tao Group’s entertainment marketing director Mike Snedegar— allows you access to a shared bottle-service area for a flat rate. For $15 and 15 minutes of your time, you’ll receive the following: a microprecise haircut, some fabulous marriage advice (his No. 1 tip: have separate bathrooms) and tales of haircuts he’s given, from Singapore to his homeland of Iran. The honorific “Mr.” has been earned. 9101 W. Sahara Ave., Suite 102, fantasticsams.com

Of course, the main objective when getting your haircut is to come out looking good. But you’re also sitting in that chair for a chunk of time: Don’t you want to be amused? Megan Trivette can chop any cowlicks and crooked parts into a facsimile of a mid-’60s Monica Vitti photo and show you how to keep it that way. But she also provides other things you want in a hairdresser: gossip and shade. Whether it’s talking smack about the clown far away in Washington, D.C., or the jerk right down the block, Megan is happy to pull out a spoon and dish. 1025 S. 1st St., Suite 165, josephineskaught.com

HABIB’S TAILORING & LEATHER

Habib Chamie is a one-man show: You get suspense, laughter and, best of all, leave with better-looking clothes. First, the suspense: Habib doesn’t tell you the cost up front, but his pricing is always fair. Second, the laughter: If you like Larry David, you’ll love Habib’s wry reflections on life and fashion. But what you’re really coming for is the skill. Given that he started perfecting his craft as a 12-year-old boy in Northern Syria and now he’s, well, much older and much wiser, Habib is guaranteed to transform your Missy Elliott circa 1997 wardrobe into Missy Elliott circa 2017. 3345 S. R2C2

With the addition of other climbing gyms in recent years, Red Rock Climbing Center, which has been around for more than two decades, has seen some competition. But it still reigns as the best gym for indoor sport climbing in the Valley, because it’s the only one that allows you to climb on the roof. The toughest of routes, which change every three months, are the 5.13-grade sport climb (think climbing that mountain on your screen saver) and the V10 (scales start at V0, so you get the idea) bouldering route on the low-hanging roof, which is over a “slide” to catch you if you fall. Whether you have your sights set on these or want to try climbing for the first time, R2C2 remains the spot to get pumped. 8201 W. Charleston Blvd., Suite 150, redrockclimbingcenter.com

Some may think water aerobics is for old ladies, but the gals in Life Time Fitness’ outdoor WTRX class will show you how to kick ass pre-AARP. The boot camp–style workout was created by Speedo, which also developed resistance equipment such as hand paddles and push plates meant to move through water and build upper-body strength. In one hour, students work out their entire body until they turn into a muscle mermaid. Plus, the water makes the exercises less taxing on joints, so recovery isn’t so bad. 10721 W. ROB MARTINEZ, LAS VEGAS SPORTS PERFORMANCE

From professional baseball players and competitive Masters Athletes to police officers and firemen, Rob Martinez has built a deep client list since opening Las Vegas Sports Performance in 2012. But it’s really his work with high school preps and college students that has impacted the community most, as more than 40 of the athletes he’s trained have received scholarships. Certified as a functional movement specialist and U.S.A. Weightlifting Sports Performance Coach, Martinez offers customized training programs and metabolic conditioning classes. “The body has to be able to function at its most efficient capacity in order to train safely,” he says. That means that whether you’re a Division I athlete or a person simply looking to get fit, an individualized program—not a general exercise or sports-training regimen—is what you’ll get. 3400 Procyon St., Suite 108, lasvegassportsperformance.com PHOTOGRAPHY ANTHONY MAIR

TRUSCULPT

Dr. Michael Mall, director of New Image Advanced Laser Skin Center, has been in the medical field in Southern Nevada for more than 25 years and currently runs a successful concierge practice in addition to an aesthetics center. In his beauty business, he sees a steady stream of men and women for fillers, Botox and laser treatments of all kinds, but Mall says that nothing beats the effectiveness of truSculpt to carve away at body imperfections, including stubborn “bra fat.” TruSculpt is a body-sculpting procedure that uses heat for circumferential reduction, smoothing problem areas over time. The heat goes deep into the subcutaneous tissue layer, tightening and melting fat. It is recommended for the thighs, buttocks and abdomen, but is also gaining popularity for the face and neck, lifting and firming the skin. Since it is nonsurgical, there is no downtime in between the recommended three to four hourly treatments spaced four to eight weeks apart. Expect to see results in four weeks, with desired effects around the 12-week mark. 7455 W. Washington Avenue, Suite 400, newimagelasvegas.com

Aging is inevitable—if you are lucky. But we all want to continue to look our best as that birthday cake turns from a campfire into a forest fire. Westsiders in the know head to Martine Abbey when they need a beauty boost but aren’t looking to go under the knife. Abbey performs what she calls a Liquid Facelift under the supervision of Dr. Nancy Long, which makes her clients look 10 years younger in just a few pokes. Recommended for those 40 to 70 years old, male or female, the Liquid Facelift is a concoction of fillers and Botox customized to suit an individual's skin care needs. Radiesse, a facial contouring filler that stimulates natural collagen, is used throughout the cheek area, Belotero gets rid of the lines around the mouth, and Juvéderm plumps up the lips—up to four items are used in combo during this treatment. Downtime can include a bit of swelling or bruising, but that lasts just a few days. 8645 W. Sahara Avenue, justfaceitlv.com

WHITNEY OWENS AT TRUFUSION

If you have any preconceived notions of yoga being a gentle physical exercise, go ahead and chuck that out the window now and roll out your mat for TruFusion YinFused class on Wednesday evening at the Eastern Avenue location. Taught by Whitney Owens, this class will have you feeling all those deep-tissue feels. With the help of a trigger roller, you’ll moan and groan through 75 minutes of sweet torture in a room so hot you won’t know whether you’re sweating or crying (there’s no shame in either). Through it all, Owens guides students with humor, encouraging all to make sexy-time noises as they slip and slide on their mats. “Maybe you’ll even find a date here,” she jokes. James M. Wong’s Reset Project is just what the Valley needs, a lifestyle events and education business that focuses on the community. Five years after it started, the project’s signature program, Sunday Reset, has gained some serious street cred. Held monthly Downtown in spots such as Downtown3rd, it helps Las Vegans chill out and tap into their physical, mental and spiritual well-being. And now there’s Elevated Reset, a weekly event that combines one of the Valley’s new health darlings, cannabis, with locally sourced, plant-based food and herbs to teach folks how to feel rejuvenated—not stoned. myresetproject.com

CREATIVE MORNINGS

Mornings are hard. That’s why there’s Creative Mornings, a monthly meetup of passion-pursuing, art-loving folks talking goals and dreams and much more. It allows participants to mingle with a like-minded community and see Las Vegas culture thrive. Every month features a new topic for discussion, in a new location, with speakers such as Arash Ghafoori, executive director of the Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth. There are also free eats and, more than likely, a great photo op for a trendy Instagram post. Don’t forget the hashtag #creativemorningsLV. creativemornings.com/cities/lv

The first competitive video game tournaments go back as far as the early ’70s, when bragging rights and a subscription to Rolling Stone were adequate prizes. Now, money has entered the competitive multiplayer video gaming equation in a major way, and casinos have taken notice. Case in point, Downtown Grand started hosting weekly esports competitions in 2015, and in 2016, the casino started taking wagers. Millennial Esports, the newest kid on the Downtown block, officially opened at Neonopolis this year, boasting a 15,000-square-foot space. And MGM Resorts International announced in April that an esports arena isn’t just on the way, it’s replacing the entire LAX nightclub inside Luxor. Esports isn’t anything new, particularly in Las Vegas. The difference is that now, casinos are investing in the trend. millennialesports.com BEST (FUTURE) INDUSTRY

SPORTS BROADCASTING

The arrival of the NHL’s Vegas Golden Knights, the soon-to-be Las Vegas Raiders and the UFC’s continued dominance makes our city the perfect testing ground for innovative sports journalism. Take, for example, The Sin Bin (sinbin. vegas), a Golden Knights podcast and website started by two friends in August 2015, before the team even had a name. Nearly two years later, they’ve formed legit industry and team connections (who regularly appear on the podcast), united the city’s budding fan base and made Sin Bin a better source for breaking Golden Knights news than any local TV station.

THE COSMOPOLITAN OF LAS VEGAS

The Cosmopolitan is more than just a hotel. Though somewhat of a secret, but there are actually 15 units under private ownership. Originally, the property was going to have a condo component, but the economy tanked (you know how that goes) and a decision was made to go full hotel. A few owners, however, held on and refused a deal to return their deposits. The condos offer the best open-air balconies on the Strip and, for the most part, carry the same style, amenities and perks as the hotel rooms. The units are rarely sold, but it’s worth keeping an eye on. BEST RIDE- SHARING SERVICE

BIG3 CHAMPIONSHIPS

Basketball fans have always had a rough time during the summer, when both pro and college leagues have gone fishing and any hoop cravings will have to be satisfied with screenings of Space Jam and The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh. But the Big3 league aims to bring hardwood thrills with a new take on the game—retired NBA stars playing fast-paced, superphysical 3-on-3 matches, with the fi rst team to score 60 declared the victor. Players on the court include Mike Bibby, Jermaine O’Neal and Allen Iverson (serving as a player-coach). Even bigger names are on the sidelines: team captains like Julius Erving and Charles Oakley. The fi rst games have drawn big crowds and celebrity names; the championship, which is slated for MGM Grand Garden Arena on August 26, is sure to do the same. big3.com BEST NONPROFIT TO SUPPORT UNDER THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION

BATTLE BORN PROGRESS

What does the term “progressive” even mean these days? To the board of Battle Born Progress, that word describes when everyone has a fair opportunity to succeed. But over the past eight months, what’s fair has become complicated by alternative facts such as Muslim bans and bills that could cause millions of Americans to lose affordable health care coverage. “The easiest way to describe us is as a PR firm for the progressive left,” explains Annette Magnus, executive director of Battle Born Progress. One of the greatest barriers to making America fair again is education and empowerment. MOST IRRESISTIBLE MARIJUANA PRODUCT

BABY J’S

What draws people to a certain product? Is it packaging, convenience, quality or all of the above? It’s going to be fun watching the cannabis industry sort out the balance in the next few years, but one that’s already ahead of the game is Baby J’s, an Altoidsinspired tin that holds six tiny joints. The boxes and their contents (“the incredibly strong minis”) come in single-strain or mixed varieties, from “lavender” to “nighttime relief.” The small size means you’re not left with half a stinky joint, and the combo packs allow for sampling different strains. You’ll probably find plenty of uses for the adorable tins, too. PHOTOGRAPHY ANDREW SEA JAMES

BEST NEW RESIDENT

THE BELIEVER MAGAZINE Las Vegas does not necessarily come to mind as a literary city, among the likes of, say, New York or San Francisco. But that’s about to change. The Believer magazine, one of the world’s leading journals of arts and culture, has a new home at Black Mountain Institute under the guidance of BMI executive director Joshua Wolf Shenk and deputy director Kellen Braddock. Just how much of a game changer is this for our city? It will certainly put Las Vegas in the forefront of the literary scene, attracting more applicants to the UNLV creative writing program (a new nonfiction track is set to accept students in the fall of 2019). And as far as literary events go, let’s just say that we predict people will be coming here more for author readings than for DJs. (Or at least we hope.) believermag.com PHOTOGRAPHY KRYSTAL RAMIREZ

THE SEVEN BEST PLACES TO

KEEP THE KIDS ENTERTAINED When people say Las Vegas is America’s playground, they’re not just talking about the Strip. Once you get into the neighborhoods, you’ll find—wait for it—playgrounds and much more for families to enjoy. Here are seven of our favorites.

ANIMAL ADVENTURE TOUR , CASA DE SHENANDOAH While Mom and Dad admire Wayne Newton’s recording legacy, the kids can see mini horses, feed swans and ducks, and be introduced to exotic animals such as Boo the Capuchin monkey and Charlie the South African penguin. 3310 E. ART MUSEUM AT SYMPHONY PARK

While the Arts District’s formerly vibrant gallery scene has been whittled down to almost nothing after a number of closures, Southern Nevadans experienced the rain after the drought when Tilting the Basin: Contemporary Art of Nevada landed at a nondescript warehouse off Commerce Street. That exhibit—a stellar showing of work by Silver State artists—was realized because of a partnership between Reno’s Nevada Museum of Art and the planned Art Museum at Symphony Park. The institution recently received state dollars, and plans are seemingly on track. The cultural landscape of Southern Nevada will be elevated with just its opening, but if it puts on shows half the caliber of Tilting, it could become a major tourism draw—giving people a lot more to talk about in Downtown Las Vegas than yard-long cocktails and hipster coffee shops.

Before opening the first Fabulous Freddy’s in 1998, Freddy Smith took a road trip to scout what different car washes around the country were doing right and wrong. Pinkbox doughnuts and Dippin’ Dots are usually within chompin’ distance, and Smith is rolling out soda bars where you can enjoy an ice cream float or mix a taste of coconut into your Dr Pepper. Considering coffee is about 98 percent water, a great cup of Joe is highly dependent on the state of its H2O. So it’s no wonder coffee shop powerhouse PublicUs is serving up the best water in the city. And what’s even better, you can have a free glass of pure aqua to wash down your bites. Run through a pre- and postthree-stage carbon filter to remove odor and taste, the water undergoes a reverse-osmosis process that perfects the mineral level, allowing the baristas to start with a blank canvas. Many dispensaries run their own grows, but often it’s the independent cultivators that come up with the more unusual (and powerful) products—they’re also more likely to be the folks who have been involved in cannabis over the long term, rather than coming into it as a trendy business opportunity. Redwood Cultivation puts out its own good stuff, but is best-known as the official growers for the Willie’s Reserve line of weed in Southern Nevada. BEST PLACE TO CALL FORTH YOUR CREATIVE MUSE

PINOT’S PALETTE

Walk by Pinot’s Palette on a random Friday night and you’ll see a roomful of people—about 60 or so—having a grand old time, paintbrushes in one hand and a wineglass in the other, grooving to a curated mix (on a recent evening, an ’80s throwback) on the sound system. These folks are up to something, and we decided to find out what. Turns out, the paint-and-drink class is one of the best ways to get down and dirty with strangers—with the help of acrylics. An instructor with a headset and the demeanor of a cheer coach guides you through painting your masterpiece, while other staff members are on hand to assist should you overmix. CASINO COMEBACKS LAS VEGAS IS ALL ABOUT REINVENTION. HERE ARE SOME OF THE BEST CHANGES TO HIT OUR CITY.

HARD ROCK HOTEL & CASINO

All it took were some shirtless dudes and suddenly, Hard Rock is the spot again. OK, maybe it’s not just the dudes, but Magic Mike Live can win back some fans that maybe haven’t been to the “house that rock built” in a bit. We’ve added the new MB Steak to our list of dining destinations, and the concert calendar continues to impress. Prince Royce, Incubus and Kings of Leon are all on tap to play The Joint this year, and Breathe Carolina and Borgore have joined the residency lineup at Rehab Beach Club. hardrockhotel.com

PALACE STATION

When the renovations are finished, the 40-year-old property will look so different. Inside, it’s all getting an upgrade, with plans for a new movie theater. palacestation.sclv.com

PALMS CASINO RESORT

The comeback started with the closing of the world’s largest Hooters in May: It always felt redundant, given we have Hooters Casino Hotel, and it didn’t feel like the Palms we grew up with. As its 16th birthday approaches, the resort is rolling out a refreshed culinary lineup, with the just-opened Lucky Penny and recently announced Social Table, as well as a new buffet concept. And if the rumors that nightlife changes are afoot are true, we could be seeing you at Rain Nightclub every weekend. Just like back in the day. palms.com –Jason R. Latham

It’s hard to believe that the Stardust has been gone for 10 years now. The Great Recession stopped would-be replacement Echelon in its tracks in 2008, but when the Genting Group bought the land in 2013, it promised Resorts World, a megaresort for the Chinese clientele. Although little progress has been visible since the 2015 groundbreaking, officials recently announced a new timeline that should have the Stardust’s replacement open by 2020. rwlasvegas.com

FOOD. MUSIC. BEER.

This fall, the food will be cooking, the music will be playing, and the beer will be flowing. Like a bbq with your best friends, The Front Yard will offer locals a laid-back way to eat, drink, and play.

Follow us on social media to stay up-to-date. We’ll see you out front later this year.
